It’s rather easily to know which UPS is which. To have line
interactive and 'clean' power, then UPS costs $500, $1000, or more.
Most all UPSes are switches. Since a UPS is intended for electronics,
that 'cheapest solution' is more than sufficient. Anything a UPS might
do is already done better inside electronic appliances.

And 'protection' provided by a line interactive UPS is already inside
every electronic power supply. If that UPS AC to DC to AC conversion
supplies protection, then the AC to DC to AC to DC again protection
inside every electronics appliance is superior. The UPS does not have
1000 volts galvanic isolation. Computers do. Intel requirements demand
that computer supplies be superior to other electronics appliances.

All electronics already contains significant protection. Therefore
additional protection is only for direct lightning strikes. Surges
that typically occur once every seven years.

Any protection a UPS might do is already inside the computer. Why
is a UPS output (in battery backup mode) so 'dirty'? Why does a
typical 120 volts UPS output 200 volt square waves with spikes up to
270 volts between those square waves? Because all electronics -
especially computers - are so robust. Makes 'dirty' UPS electricity
irrelevant.

Most all UPSes connect the appliance directly to AC mains when not in
battery backup mode. They will do most anything to keep you confused.
Many foolishly believe its AC power is generated from DC. Nonsense.
Put a scope on the UPS output. When is its output cleanest? When the
relay connects the appliance directly to AC mains. Anything a
manufacturer can do to subvert knowledge gets the naive to claim a UPS
'cleans' electricity. Any urban myth that increases sales is a good
thing.

A Linux box (properly assembled) should recover harmlessly from
unexpected power loss.

Actually it should be exactly the menu structure you would see on the
logitech device. So if you use a Radio, Controller or Touch they'd
present the menus in the exact same (dis-?)order.

The Extras menu is special I think. Its disabled per default on the
devices - but its where most of the third party stuff puts its sub-menu
under. I'll keep a note to hide it if it has no items.

Also if you search for the 'Apps' thingies you will find a lot of
threads here on the forum. Apps is what is provided by Logitech - so
Album-Review cannot appear there (but somewhere else - whatever the
author chose).

Using the original menus has a lots of advantages and disadvantages:
(-) if users don't like the logitech way, they won't like the SqueezPad
way
(+) users don't get confused by the menus when switching between
SqueezePad/Controller/Touch/Radio/Boom/Classic
(+) I automatically have all features available on all devices. If I
started something on my own a lot of stuff would be missing (like
Spotify, Pandora, Napster, Rhapsody, Third Party plugins) - as I even
don't know all this stuff users are using.

For the 7.6. beta version logitech decided to make it possible to
reorder menus. I'll probably need to implement this feature as well.

I have a Receiver in one of our bedrooms and have had constant

worse recently. The signal strength frequently drop to 10% (tried

at all times).

Is reception by the Receiver poorer than other devices of do I have a

Yes after a little more exploring i guess Squeezepad is using the same
menus as my other devices --- which i think it the right thing to do.
I just need to fix my menu settings better, get rid of some stuff i
dont use etc.

The Extras menu should actually have some items for me because it does
on the web interface but doesnt in Squeezepad.

Although i like ipeng i am glad you chose the other route (sticking
with the logitech way) because it will scale better with new apps and
plugins i think. Right now Im still gettin used to how it handles
plugins.

Apart from that I pretty much leave the SP menu structure as it is with
the notable exception of trying to group player settings menu under

instead of having them distributed across the whole menu structure as
SqueezePlay does.

I believe the SP philosophy is that the whole SP menu structure is
player specific so a player settings menu doesn't make sense which is a
philosophy I don't agree to.

How about agreeing on a way to customize the home menu structure
through the server and have a plugin for that? The motivation for me
would be to have then same menu structure for all players and all
client devices which I think is otherwise a pain in the ass to design.
We would need somebody to write the plugin, though, I'm not gonna touch

[slim] Album Art Screensaver - now playing?

2010-08-04 Thread Viragored

Hi everyone - A little while back I installed the screensaver that was
announced a few years back by cr-mattias here -
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35267

It works great, but

There was originally integration with slimserver to feature 'now
playing' details, but that doesn't seem to work on my setup. I get the
screen display of changing album art (which is great), but nothing about
what is currently playing. I guess this may be because the author
hasn't been able to keep the screensaver up to date.

The screensaver is available from here
http://www.crayonroom.com/screensaver.php, with a forum also available
from that page. But posts are moderated before display, and the
moderator doesn't seem to be at home :-(

Has anyone been able to use the 'now playing' feature on current
squeezebox server and windows PCs? If so, do you have any tips that I
could try?

My set up uses Squeezebox Duet, SqueezeCenter 7.3.3, Windows Vista with

All my browsing/searching of the SBS library is done through iPeng
usually by artist or by album. I don't use the web interface at all

I also use Trackstat, Dynamic playlist, MusicIP and Spicefly plugins to

 2. How do you usually find new music you like to get but currently
don't have in your library ?
For sometime I have been using a combination of Spotify, Last.fm and
Groveshark. This started from the fact that I have only recently (this
year) joined the ranks of SB users and have a much larger vinyl LP
(4500 records) collection than a digital collection (700 CDs). I
therefore wanted to hear lots of the stuff that I have on vinyl (hence
the use of Spotify free) and I started using the biography and related
artist festures to listen to music I don't currently own. I have
subsequently broadened my searches by also using Last.fm. I now use
these two products plus Groveshark to preview music I might want to
buy.
I recently discovered the Biography plugin for SBS and have started to
use that to track down related artists but still tend to go back to the
computer to preview any new music found rather than trying to do it
through the DSBridge/Spotify setup I also use via the iPod Touch. I
would tend to use the computer rather than my hi-fi due to the low
quality of most (free) streamed services. I have no desire to use
subscription based services at present as I wish to have bit perfect
recordings held digitally and played back through my hi-fi.
As with everyone friends also play a large role in introducing me to
new music. The biggest difference today is that I can then perform more
discovery on a new band/performer recommended to me by a friend using
the tools identified above. I'm not a fan of community sites like
Twitter and Facebook but this is probably due to my age (50)!

 3. How would you like to be able to find music in your own library in
 the future ?
As a long time vinyl collector I find myself both liberated and
strangled by the digital era. By this I mean that the speed with which
I can now play music and the ability to produce static and dynamic
playlists is awesome, but it could be improved and it tends to make one
lazy and stop searching and playing individual albums.
As I've stated I use MusicIP and Spicefly on SBS and get great value
out of both. I've also started using Moodagent on the iPod and am
beginning to think that this has a very bright future. I would like to
see these types of feature more heavily integrated into the base
feature set of SBS. However, they still don't go far enough IMO in that
sometimes I want a feature similar to the Last.fm artist radio feature
to randomly play artist related music from my own collection. The
combination of these features would give me all I need to produce all
the random playlists I could ever want.
I feel particularly strangled in the area of searching music, although
I find this much harder to describe properly. My vinyl collection is
held on purpose built selves where each shelf holds about 600 LPs. The
LPs are not ordered alphabetically or by genre, but are grouped by
artist/ composer and very loosely by classical, blues, rock. The point
is that I can find any individual album very quickly because I know
where they are on the shelves I think through some sort of pattern
recognition. Accepting that I can always search for a known album
alphabetically I would like to be able to search via album art and find
that the current mechanisms are all lacking in some way. The coverflow
(ala itunes) mechanism doesn't do anything with a big collection
because it's just an alphabetical listing. I would like something that
gives me an overview of the entire collection, ordered as I want it
(and its not related to current tag info), and then allows me to drill
down to see more detail. I know this is vague but I want to graphically
recreate and use my LP shelving system as a search mechanism.

[slim] Need help with streaming/radio/recommendation suggestions.

2010-08-04 Thread Symbiotic

I'll try to make a long story short:

Used to live in the US and loved having all the preset Internet Radio
stations as well as Last.FM access via my SB3.

Now I live in Ireland, and Last.FM doesn't have a license for the SB3
here, nor do any of the preset internet radio stations work.

What are my options for discovering and listening to new music via SB3
now that I live in Ireland? I've thought about starting up a Spotify
account, as apparently there's a loophole for signing up (via a
proxy)...

But I'd love to hear advice on how I might get other net radio stations
working, or anything else like Last.FM radio, etc.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!

2010-08-04 Thread vagskal

In another thread Erland wrote this and suggested that it should be
possible to look up on Spotify and similar services artists/albums not
in the local library through a context menu.

erland;564817 Wrote:
I just realized something that would be really great. There are a few
plugins available that provides things like similar artists through
the context menus of an artist. For example, the Spotify and Biography
and Song Info plugins have functionality like this.

 [Snip]

 Scenario 2:
 1. I'm listening to an artist in my library
 2. I pull up the Biography plugin and lists some followers to this
 artist
 3. I would now like to find and play some music on one of these
followers, to do this I would at this stage want to launch the On
Spotify menu for the selected follower. This is not possible today
since there aren't any context menus for items that doesn't exist in
 the SBS database.

I too use the similar artists function a lot to find new artists and
to get ideas on what to play next. Erland's suggestion would make a
great improvement. I would also like to be able to use such a context
menu on a follower/similar artist in the Biography plugin to look up
that artist in my own library.

I also often use the song info context menu to look up guest artists
and composers and play more tracks by them. With this approach I often
wish it would be easier to expand an album, i.e. see, or play, all
tracks in an album, not just the tracks where the artist/composer
appear.

Otherwise I mainly use the artist list to find music. I would use the
search function more often if it was faster in large libraries. Now, I
basically only use it to find songs I cannot otherwise find.

I use the standard tags recognised by SBS and add cover art and
information on original release year and style, mood, theme and album
rating tags according to the system used by AMG. I also use the genres
used by AMG and add Christmas, Compilation, Live, Soundtrack, Bootleg,
Bonus Track, EP and Single tags. I have tried to import and use the
style, mood and theme tags but I am experiencing such performance
issues with a large library that I cannot do that currently. Importing
and merging tags for original release year works so I use that and also
import album ratings. I personally would not use a function to download
music via SBS and automatically adding it to SBS, because I want to
check and supplement the tagging before committing anything to SBS.

I mostly play full albums. Sometimes I use CustomSkip to play only the
original album and get rid of all bonus tracks with crappy demos,
discarded takes etc. added to reissue albums. For the occasional random
playing I would love to be able to use the style, mood and theme tags.
Today I have only one dynamic playlist to play songs originally
released in a particular year. Otherwise I use the standard random song
mix with CustomSkip adequately configured. Before I sometimes used
MusicIP, but as the library grew I experienced such performance issues
that I stopped using MusicIP.

Nowadays I use almost exclusively iPeng to control SBS. I loved muso
and the way it sorted artists/albums and displayed automatically
information on biographies, reviews and similar artists (from LastFM
and Amazon), but development unfortunately seems to have stopped.

I do not do manual or automatic rating of songs. I use only the album
rating as reported by AMG.

The folder structure is not per se important to me, but I find that SBS
and other software works better if the structure is consistent (one
folder per album). I do not embed cover art in flac files but use
folder.jpg so the folder structure for those files becomes important.

Re: [slim] Need help with streaming/radio/recommendation suggestions.

2010-08-04 Thread bpa

There are a number of US based stations (e.g.iheart users) and some UK
one which are restricted but most free internet stations work OK in
Ireland.

I think Last.fm may still be used if you use the 3rd party plugin with
a local SBS server and not the Logitech supplied service.

Which preset stations do not work for you ?

Have you changed your location in MySqueezebox account ?

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-08-04 Thread apn

Still enjoying the app on my Nexus One. Very happy to hear that Global
Search capability is in the pipeline.

A few observations with the latest version;

- I find it near impossible to change the master volume control that
appears at the bottom of the album art and other screens. I can
pause/fwd/rev the music selection, but for some reason, I can't change
the volume.

- On the screen that display my 4 players, I have a really hard time
selecting/changing the volume of a specific player (doesn't matter if
it's master or slave). I have to use the tip of my pinky finger, and
even then, it takes several attempts. If someone asks me to change the
volume, it's ~2 minute task :(

- On the playlist screen, when I scroll right (to hopefully move back
to the album art or players screen), it always seems to add the
currently swiped song to the playlist. It takes several attempts to get
to the desired screen, so I'll often go back to the Home screen and
reselect the app.

Maybe it's just a case of fat finger Larry on my part, but I really
don't have big hands ;)

[slim] 7.5.x Playlist limit of 30 songs

2010-08-04 Thread Eric Seaberg

I was trying to play a multi-disc collection using the latest 7.5
nightly and discovered that only 30 of the 121 songs load into the
playlist. I went back to the official 7.5.0 and it does the same
thing... only loads 30 songs. Reverting back to the last official
7.4.2 works the way it should.

I'm running on a MacMINI OS 10.5.8, as I have been for the last
4-years.

Anyone else seeing this? Did I miss a thread where it's already been
reported?

I also get no cover art on the main 'Now Playing' pane on the right hand
side.

If I bring up the 'current playlist' via the menus on the left (Music
Library- etc.) I see the playlist and the cover art for each track.
These are FLACs with embedded cover art.

I picked a track on the current playlist showing the cover art and
played that song (despite a message saying that feature was not
enabled). But all I get on the RHS is the title, artist etc. and the
time bar. Just a large blank area where I would expect the cover art.
Image on the left, blank on the right.

Hi Richard - sorry to hear, that Cover Art is not working for you.
The good thing - they appear in the menu so at least we can exclude a
problem with your server, I guess.

To help me fix your problem could you please provide me with log-files
as written here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=564512postcount=63.

You should surf the menu, start a track and wait one or two seconds
until the progress bar starts to move when doing the logs.

If I can spot the error I can provide you with a beta-built within
24hours which will hopefully solve the problem.

Thanks for reporting by the way! - I'm pretty sure we can solve your
problem really fast.

On my Hero, I need to touch the screen some pixels above the expected
volume slider grab area.

I installed the app Draw to see the real touch point.
E.g. draw a horizontal line and try to draw another line directly on
the old line.

BTW: You can also change the volume of the current player by using the
hard buttons for volume up/down on your phone.

You mean on the *current playlist* screen? (The 3rd screen on the main
view?)
That's strange, because if you tap on a song in the current playlist,
it will not be added (because it is already in the playlist), but it
will jump to this song and start playing.

If you try to swipe on some other views (Album/Artist/Playlist ...
browse list), this does not work. The 3-screen-layout ONLY exists on
the main View (Player/Server - NowPlaying - CurrentPlaylist).
The other views only have ONE screen with a big list. :-)

But remember the button on the top-left corner (the note symbol with
the arrow) on most screens.
This will bring you directly to the NowPlayingScreen.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2010-08-04 Thread KMorgan

Christian

While there is talk of problem touch screens, may I make a suggestion?

When browsing the libary touching a song sets it playing, unless
something is already playing, in which case it adds it to the end of
the playlist. I constantly find myself making a mistake with this.
e.g. I intend to swipe the screen but accidently add a song to the
playlist etc. You get the idea.

I would prefer if touching a song always brought up the context menu
regardless. If the intention was to play the song or add it to the
playlist, those options are immediately available. If the menu pops up
because of a mistake then it can easily be cancelled.

Cheers

Keith

p.s. thanks for pointing out that the hard volume buttons work. Didn't

Everyone is entitled to their opinion regarding the price so I'm not
going to say that you are wrong. However, I'm so happy that SqueezePad
exists and I personally think it's worth $9.99 and I would be happy to
pay even more for it. The main reason for this is that bluegaspode
seems to be very focused at improving it to make future versions even
better and helping users who have some problem.

We have to remember that Squeezebox iPad apps isn't a huge market the
possible customers are only those that have both an iPad and a
Squeezebox. Due to this you can't compare the prize of a Squeezebox
iPad app with a $7 game where the potential customers are every iPad
owner on the planet.

Since Logitech have decided to do it on the client side it's not going
to be enough to have a server side plugin, we will also need an applet
that can modify the menus on the client and report to the server side
plugin which menus that are available. In SqueezePlay it's important to
remember that some menus might be created by applets which the server
side isn't even aware of.

There isn't any way to replace/reorder menus on the server side, there
was support for this earlier but the functionality disappeared in a 7.x
release (don't remember exactly which one). Some support for it might
come back in 7.6 if the onebrowser functionality is included but that
only involves menus under My Music.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-08-04 Thread bluegaspode

At the current price I'm giving the full feature set of a $213.00
controller.
With even bigger cover art and snappier touch navigation.
With much faster player switching.
With a lot of free improvements coming down the road.
Without you needing to up- and downgrade firmwares.
With currently much more instant support than Logitech.
And a bluegaspode hanging around these forums helping with all the
other various problems outside the world of SqueezePad.

So all people already owning an iPad for other stuff actually safe $204
and get a better remote control.

I think its a very fair price, compared to what you already invested in
your Squeezeboxen, your iPad and iPhone (I'm asking for less than 2%).

We should also not forget - with every sold piece we sponsor the
following parties as well:
30% go to Steve
15% Luxembourg VAT for all European Countries (currently 66% of my
market)
25% German income tax go into stabilizing the financial crisis *cough*
and debts of Germany.

So nothing to make me rich actually.
The price won't go down in the future I guess, rather up, based on the
market and upcoming competion when Squeezebox-Apps will challenge each
other with more and more cool features.

I won't go deeper into pricing discussions, its your choice anyway ;)

[slim] Any way to configure a power-on sound for an SB3?

2010-08-04 Thread msherman

Does anyone know a way (a plugin, I presume, but I'll accept another
solution if someone knows one) to configure a sound to play when I turn
on my SB3?

My SB3 is connected to an Audiosource Amp-100, which has an auto-on
feature that turns itself on when the SB3 starts playing above a
certain volume threshold. It works great, but there's some latency, and
if the first song starts off quiet, it can take a while before the amp
powers up. If the SB3 made a power-up sounds, that would trigger the
auto on as soon as I turned on the squeezebox, so I wouldn't miss the
start of the music once I hit play.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
- Marc

Just got 1.2.5!

Exciting to have a new version!

A few things:

* I wish you could do more than pause and go to the menu in landscape

* Not too crazy about the power on and off button now. It's not too
obvious when its off vs. on, and is that an iPod icon? Hm...
* Some of the other features/bug fixes sound really good, but haven't
had enough time to play with em/see em yet.

Glad to see an update though!!!

[slim] [Announce] iPeng 1.2.5 now on the App Store

2010-08-04 Thread pippin

After a period of silence there is now a new iPeng update on the App
Store - 1.2.5

I call it the iOS4 update since one of it's drivers was to provide
full compatibility with iOS4 including multitasking support. But then
this name is a bit inaccurate since
• iPeng 1.2.5 actually runs on any iPhone OS device from 3.0 on, not
only on iOS4
• There's more than just iOS4 support in this update

SO WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Let's group this into what's new, what's improved and what got
fixed:

WHAT'S NEW?

• iOS4 support. iPeng now makes use of fast App Switching and
Multitasking. This means if you leave iPeng and come back later it will
still be in the exact same place where you left. iPeng does NOT run in
the background, this would eat up too much power, but it does continue
synchronizing the cache from the server until that's done.
• Landscape Mode. iPeng now supports both portrait and Landscape modes.
The NowPlaying screen in Landscape mode will now provide a screen-saver
like full screen view. Some spill over from some other development
we're working on ;)
• High-Res graphics. iPeng now uses full-scale graphics on NowPlaying
and bigger cover art thumbnails on iPhone 4 (and iPad). Actually the
and iPad part for the thumbs doesn't work right now but I will upload
an 1.2.5.1 update shortly that will fix this.
• Accessibility. iPeng now fully supports VoiceOver (iPhone from 3GS,
iPod touch from 3rd generation and iPad only) making it probably the
most powerful Squeezebox remote control solution for people with visual
disabilities. This sounds like what's this good for? for a lot of
people but actually it's a biggie. First: It's not as simple as Apple
claims and second: it's really, really helpful for blind people compare
to iPeng's last release but especially to most other means of remote
control
• Localization. iPeng is now fully localized in English, German and
Danish languages and provides enhanced support for many other
languages, too. More to come.

WHAT'S IMPROVED?
• Improved Player and Music Source handling. iPeng will now find your
player automatically in even more cases and also switch Music Sources
if required. This is especially important if you switch Music Sources a
lot and don't find your player then. Now iPeng usually will find it for
you. Also: iPeng is ow able to reconnect lost players as long as they
are still on the network, a big improvement especially for users of the
SB Receiver.
• Even more enhanced Squeezebox feature and plugin support with
additional search and context menu functionality. Global Search is
now supported through Extras and also through additional context
menus on the NowPlaying Context Menu.
• Enhanced Server configuration support. iPeng now allows you to change
your MySqueezebox.com account and has improved support for Wake-On-LAN
(WOL). WOL can now be activated manually, you can define more than one
WOL address and iPeng autodetects your server's MAC for convenience.

WHAT GOT FIXED?
• Several issues with iOS4 and Squeezebox Server on the Squeezebox
Touch are fixed in this release:
• Alarms do work now in iOS4
• DragDrop now works in iOS4. This one was the technical biggie. Apple
made a change in iOS4 that effectively means you can no longer update a
view in the background when using DD. Which is kind of a problem if
the data you show is permanently being updated from an external server
and can stop to make any sense if it's not.

SO WAIT A MOMENT, WHAT HAPPENED TO IPAD AND PLAYBACK?

Now, playback has eaten up a lot of time and resources here and still
doesn't work correctly, I'm sorry for that.
Actually since it DOES take so much effort I decided a while back to
focus on iPad first. So the next thing you are going to see is not an
iPeng with Playback but iPeng for iPad.

DOES THIS MEAN PLAYBACK IS DEAD?

Not it's not, but it's delayed. We are pursuing some alternative
options to integrate it that might speed things up but as it stands
right now, iPeng for iPad will come first.

But for now: Have fun with iPeng 1.2.5!

You have no idea how much experimenting we have through with that.
There will be some improvement with an 1.2.5.1 update that will also be
required since the high-res thumbnails don't work on iPad which they
really should :)

Oh, because so many people asked for it :)

Plus: The normal NowPlaying screen simply doesn't work for landscape
and I don't really have short-term plans to port that. Most of the
other landscape work simply results from higher flexibility I got from
the work for iPad and since there will not be a NowPlaying screen on
iPad there was no need to fix something on this.
So I just used the screen saver I had...

I'd like to still be able to use iPeng when I'm in landscape mode! In

For anything but NowPlaying this works. For NowPlaying there is no way
I will implement this soon since it will require a complete redesign of
the NowPlaying screen which is like a month of work or so.

Grey line? You mean the iPhone's status bar?
Or the progress bar at the bottom of the overlay? (yes, it does move).
But that one's not showing up in portrait mode.
Oh, and you can do away with the overlay by clicking the cover.

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-08-04 Thread tbowland

There are two things on my mind related to the additional real estate
available on the iPad.

Browsing/Selecting by album art - I'm very visual and when I browse
as opposed to look for something specific I do it in a very visual
ways
Lots of big album art and not so much text.

What room am I controlling? - For the women of the world that will use
this new iPad app
(thanks to the iPad form factor and ease of use that number has the
potential to go way up)
I need to know what I'm controlling at a glance rather than dig/slid
through pages
and pages to see if I'm inadvertently going to turn the music on or up
in another room. Most of us will put up with making that mistake but
alot
of women will just consider it not easy enough, not usable.

Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 1.2.5 now on the App Store

2010-08-04 Thread pippin

Ah, there's one feature I forgot to mention:

A lot of people asked for a way to keep iPeng running to be immediately
available when picked up while shutting off the screen to save power.

Now the issue is that iPhone doesn't let any App control the screen or
the screen saver. I can disable the screen saver but then the screen
will stay on forever.

The one workaround I found (iPhone only) is now implemented whenever
you enable Prevent Standby in iPeng: It will use the proximity sensor
to turn the screen off. This way, if you put the iPhone on the table
with the screen facing downwards you get exactly this behavior.

2010-08-04 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Bringing up a page of album art like that would be way too slow. The
speed squeezebox server can serve the art seems to be an issue. Just
look at the art being populated when you bring up the 5 album under an
artist using the current iPeng.

You would have to wait 5 seconds for a page of art just load at the
least.

Performance should be the #1 goal, IMO.

Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!

2010-08-04 Thread matthijskoopmans

1. How do you find music in your own library ?
- Custom Browse Random Albums or Artist By Letter. Sometimes I use Lazy
Search for something really specific.

2. How do you usually find new music you like to get but currently
don't have in your library ?
- Friends, internet news/reviews... I have a large collection, and do
not need a lot new music.

3. How would you like to be able to find music in your own library in
the future ?
- I use MusicIP with Spicefly's Sugarcube a lot, as well as custom
browse random albums. I would love to have the two combined, where the
albums are selected based on the Music IP data seeded from the last
album.

4. How would you like to find new music you like to buy/get in the
future?
- An RSS news feed based on what you are listening to.. i.e. new album
from band in your collection, or specific style (last.fm data?)

5. What kind of tagging/management do you do on new music you add to
your library to make it easier to find stuff later on ? NOTHING OTHER
THAN MAKE SURE TAGS ARE COMPLETE AND CORRECT.
- Nothing gets in my library without first passing though MusicBrainz
(Picard), then a volume analysis with MediaMonkey, I clear all Genre
tags, and then finally a Music IP scan (i archive the analysis in the
tag). Everything is stored in a folderstrucutre (\albumartistsort first
letter\album artist\album\tracks)

6. Do you synchronize the data in SBS with some other application to
make it easier to find interesting music ?
- No... SBS manages the library based on the track metadata. MusicIP
integration is to indicate a track is mixable only.

hope this helps,

Matt

1.
How do you find music in your own library ?

Mostly My Music-Dynamic-not rated (use all kind of expressions) or top
rated
I m listening music based on ratings and history (top rated songs not
recently played)
Often use the simple search feature too. Album art is nice, i love it,
but i never use. :)
Im a total idiot, but dreaming about a simple menu that can be able to
choose some genres with top rated tracks and play them. (a+b+..n genre
-top rated songs in dynamic playlist)

2.
How do you usually find new music you like to get but currently don't
have in your library ?

Always look my fav band's side projects, search all artist's bio and
seek for new bands. Looking new youtube links on Facebook. :) Sometimes
im listening radioio, and try to remember the best songs and bands
Sometimes use Allmusic.com
Through friends (but its a marginal factor)
Always previewing before i buy something. Good audio quality is
important too.

3.
How would you like to be able to find music in your own library in the
future ?

Im a total idiot, but dreaming about a simple menu that can be able to
choose some genres with top rated tracks and play them. (a+b+..n genre
-top rated songs in dynamic playlist)

Would be nice, if i can be able to change/add tags via SB Classic (or
on web) or write comments to each song (maybe can marking points of a
track (nice drum solo here, and search it later)

4.
How would you like to find new music you like to buy/get in the future
?

Nowadays i use the Squeezeplay more than SB Classic, but i prefer
Classic with remote.

5.
What kind of tagging/management do you do on new music you add to your
library to make it easier to find stuff later on ?

I'm not using custom tags yet, but i ll do that

Yes, im rated my songs/albums manually and this make the base of my
playlists. I have a huge collection of music (21000 songs) and id like
to see, whats my really fav songs.

6.

Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!

2010-08-04 Thread felixh

I have a large library of mostly classical/opera, with some soundtracks,
jazz, and electronica thrown in. I've ripped about half of it so far,
and have approx 2 TB of FLAC files.

1. How do you find music in your own library ?
- Which way to you browse/search ? (which browse or search menus)

By Album or Artist (using custom album format for classical based on
composer and work; Artist includes performers, conductors, and
ensembles).

- Which type of remote/interface do you use ? Different for different
situations ?

iPeng on iPhone (preferred), front-panel controls on Boom, or IR
remote for SB3.

- Do you find music through statistics based browse menus ? (ratings,
play counts, history)

No -- I find music based on whatever my mood strikes me; whether
that means listening to a Ring cycle, or all my Autechre albums.

- Do you find music through smart playlists based on statistics or
random selection or other kind of automatic mixes ?

No

- Do you use album art when selecting what to play ?

No

- Do you typically start searching/browsing from an artist, album or
track and want to find something related to that ?

Start at Album or Artist, not track

2. How do you usually find new music you like to get but currently
don't have in your library ?
- Heard it on the radio?

In the past, when I lived in LA and listened to KUSC, not anymore.

- Where do you start when searching ? Top charts ? Genres ? Similar
artists ?

Branch from known composers to related unknown ones, or to unfamiliar
works.

- Do you use some web site when searching or do you browse some music
store directly?

Web sites, Amazon reviews can be useful to help distinguish versions
or different remasterings.

- Are you using the computer, your Squeezebox or some other device when
searching for new music ?

Computer.

- Do you preview the music before puchasing ? Do you preview it on the
real system or cheep laptop speakers or something similar?

I usually only buy based on reviews. I exclusively buy lossless, and
MP3 previews are not useful to me.

- Do you use a subscription based service so you aren't actually buying
albums, you just need to find the albums/tracks you are interested in by
browsing the service ?

No, but the BW service looks interesting.

- Through reviews ? Any specific online site ?

Various classical music blogs, subscription to Fanfare
(fanfarearchives.com), reviews on music-web.

- Through friends ? Some community site ?

No

3. How would you like to be able to find music in your own library in
the future ?
- What kind of functionality is missing today related to browsing?

Lacking lots of needed features needed for classical/opera, such as
explicit support (tag support [incl. sort versions] and menus) for the
following tags: composer, work, opus no.(or KV etc), original work name
(e.g. in german or french), classical part (e.g. movement no. and
description), conductor, performer with instrument, singer with voice
type and role.

- What kind of functionality is missing today related to searching?
Search by conductor, work, opus no., ensemble, performer,
instrument, voice type, opera role.

4. How would you like to find new music you like to buy/get in the
future ?
- What would you like to do through the Squeezebox/SBS or one of it's
remotes?

No.

- What would you like to do on some other hardware?

Browser the web and read e.g. Fanfare via something like an iPad,
but with more resolution.

5. What kind of tagging/management do you do on new music you add to
your library to make it easier to find stuff later on ?
- Which additional tags do you add which isn't handled by standard SBS
today ?
Disknumber/Disktotal
Disktracknumber (per disc, allowing track to overflow for multi-disc
albums)
Classical work
Classical opus no.
Classical composer, and composersort
Classical part
Classical short work (e.g. abbreviating A-flat minor to ab)
Classical album is synthesized from composer and work, a single CD
may contain multiple albums.
Classical album name (e.g. Bernstein plays Bernstein), if applicable

- Is the folder structure the music files are stored in important ?

Yes. This is my primary way of recovering the location of the FLAC
files relating to a single CD.

- If you use Custom Scan, which additional tags do you add besides
those supported by SBS ?

Stopped using custom scan due to inability to get it working just
the way I needed it.

- Do you manually add ratings to your music ? Why ?

No ratings.

6. Do you synchronize the data in SBS with some other application to
make it easier to find interesting music ?

No. I won't allow any app to touch my tags automatically. I use
Foobar 2K to query my tags and find things, MP3Tag with lots of custom
regexes to help automate my tagging process.

You can achieve mp3 playback on an iOS4 device that supports
multi-tasking by going to Safari, entering the URL of your stream
(http://mysqueezeboxserver:9000/stream.mp3) and then going back to
iPeng to manage the music.

It's not perfect, but it works when you want to stream some music to
your phone.

 Thanks for the report!

Maybe I should also disable the MainMenu / BrowseList layout animation
(the entries are filled in one by one from the top) if Animations are
disabled, this will probably make it more convenient on slow devices...

Sure, anything you can do to further improve the usability on slow
devices is appreciated. Any fade in/out is also pointless on my pad,
since it only manages to render a couple of steps in time:D
