You'll have to add the service in the App Gallery too.

This is the answer I would be expecting. Although I'm not that
technically familiar with the older ip3k platform, I suspect that it
would be very difficult (if not impossible) to support both IPv4 and
IPv6 and still maintain the current functionality...
I expect that it will be common for home routers to do IPv4-over-IPv6
for LAN devices that don't support v6.
Getting data from an IPv4 site to an IPv6 device won't be a problem
But getting data from an IPv6 (only) site to an IPv4 device will... You
won't be able to stream from an IPv6 radiostation unless you use the
squeezeboxserver as a proxy, but not everybody is using
sqeeuzeboxserver...

OK. let me rephrase. You cannot do this, without a public ipv4
address.

One thing that you have to keep in mind, is that once public
IP-addresses have run out, you will be put behind a NAT of the ISP for
your ipv4-to-ipv4 traffic. Do not expect that these CGN (Carrier
Grade Nat) services will offer port-forwarding.

The only way you can then have ipv4 peer-to-peer connectivity will be
via some kind of relay. OK, you can get a connection via a VPN-service
somewhere, but this actually is pretty much the same thing as buying a
public ipv4 address.
Or you can get yourself a business subscription at your ISP -which
includes a fixed ipv4-address- but do not complain if you need to pay
(say) 20 euro a month extra for that.

Why would you get throu all this problem is you can just move to ipv6
and have full any-to-any connectivity between any device on the
planet?
- between your phone/tablet and your SB
- between your SB and a shoutcast server operated by somebody on her
private LAN-network at home
- between your SB and the NAS of a friend on his home-LAN
- between your SB and somebody elses in a peer-to-peer broadcasting
network.
- to receive ipv6 multicast stations (RP-embedded ipv6 multicast
addressing allows ANY ipv6 router to act RP for a multicast-stream so
everybody is able to start a radio-station using ipv6 multicast).

If you just use your SB to listen to an internet-radio station of some
large media-concern, ipv4 and nat and nat-after-nat will do just fine.
But if you want to go beyond that, ipv6 is an opportunity which allows
for all kind of new and decentralised services. Learn to use it and
image what you can do with it.

Hi Pat,

All very true. But don't expect it to happen to anything in the current
SqueezeBox line. None of the old products are going to change
significantly. The Touch and Radio might, but I won't hold my breath.

Of course. I do not expect this to be written this in a week neither.

The only point I wanted to make is that one should not concider ipv6 as
just a fix for the fact that the ipv4 address-space has run out. It's
much more than that. (see my other messages on that, I try not to
repeat myself to much :-) ).

It will take time for ipv6 to get deployed and for people to have this
ok, as any device on the planet can now talk to any other deivce, so
perhaps we can use it for ... moment, which is needed for the new
applications to dreamed up, coded and appear.

But, of course, if a box does not talk ipv6, there is no way it can
participate in this. :-)

I hope that the ipv4exhaustion will do its work. I see that the SB-code
will get upgraded to support ipv6 this year.
I've made my point so I rest my case.

Agree the the rendezvous capabilities of IPv6 are great, and will make
TV and movies much more interesting. But I don't see a need for audio,
it so low in bandwidth requirements.

True. It would allow everybody to start their audio-stream from his/her
own private network. And it can also be used for other kinds of data
like status-updates or playlists.

I just don't see it happening in the US because the ISPs are dragging
 their feet.

Try http://ipv6.comcast.com/ :-)

Is there an advantage or disadvantage using 64 bit over 128 bit

Yeah, that helps when the device has the correct encryption passphrase.
;)
It's kind of like trying to use your house key on your neighbors front

Using 64 or 128 have no performance impact on your SB player. HOWEVER,
using WEP at all is not recommended. You really should be using WPA2
for your encryption for much better security.
WEP is an easily hacked unsecured protocol.

Verizon also did IPv6 testing last year on their FiOS network, and I
wouldn't be surprised if they start their trials soon too.

The cell carriers will likely be the slowest, since there are so many
devices out there that don't, or can't, support IPv6... of course, a
lot of cell phone internet access is already going through NAT or proxy

I would expect ANY ISP customer service to respond What's that?.
They're not usually the brightest of the bunch when it comes to the
latest and greatest IT stuff. If they're not spoon-fed information
about new technologies, they don't usually know what they are. BTW...
'Cox is doing IPv6 trials'
as well.

Verizon's initial IPv6 tests over FiOS were last year around April,
about the same time as Comcast started doing their initial tests as
well.

And by the way... just because all of the IPv4 blocks have been handed
out to the regional NICs doesn't mean that EVERY address is in use as
of yesterday. Keep in mind that EVERY class A (/8)is 16.5 million IP
addresses... APNIC just received three of those (the last two that
could be requested, as well as a third that was part of the automatic
distribution). That 49+ million IP addresses will likely allow them to
get through most of this year, if not into next year. Similarly, the
other regional NIC's likely have more than a few smaller blocks of
addresses still available, in addition to the 16.5 million that they
each just received.

The clock is ticking, yes... but it's not doomsday yet. It's definitely
time for companies making networked devices to begin putting IPv6
support in though... it will be here before we all know it.

Its been past time. IPv6 is over a decade old. There has been lots of
feet dragging.

None of this will impact consumers for years. Linux, Windows and OS-X
have had dual stack support for years. No one has used it, so there may
be bugs, but the code is there, the design is there, it just has to be
rolled out.

Andy confirmed that the modern devices will get IPv6 support in the
future, the old ones, Classic, Transporter, etc. will never see it. I
don't expect this to be a problem for 99% of the customers.

mysqueezebox.com and Squeezebox Server are running perfectly on my pc

This is my config on my SBR:

For the price, ease of use and ability to jailbreak I think this is the
one for me. I'll let you guys know how it goes later when I get it up
and running. Probably won't be for a while though as I am really busy.

[slim] Transporter question

2011-02-04 Thread vett93

I have been using WiFi for my Transporter flawlessly for years. Lately,
I am thinking if I should use Ethernet instead. Does anyone know if the
WiFi module inside Transporter will get shut down when Ethernet is
used?

If the WiFi module does get shut down, it will have a lower noise
floor, which is a good thing.

Looks like it was the weak wireless. We switched to powerline network
devices and it's flawless now.

Thanks very much for the assistance,
Jason

[slim] Transport doesn't play...

2011-02-04 Thread JohnWH

My NAS server died a few months ago so haven't used my transporter for
while, this evening I got around to installing the server on my PC
(WinXP) so that I could start using the transporter again.

Everything installed ok, server scaned library and found tracks ok,
server finds player, player can see server and music library but for
some reason it won't play any selected track. Pressing play on a track
results in the usual now playing and track name but the track timer
never advances and the track doesn't play. When trying to play a track
from the web interface the web interface shows the track advancing but
the player doesn't and produces no sound.

The player did say it was updating firmware when it connected to the
new server install, buthat seemed to complete ok (firmware version
82).

Kind of stumped, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
John.

try a xlinx update:
Disconnect power to TP, Hold down the 1 button on the remote,
reconnect power while IR button is still pressed - you will see on
screen confirmation

Re: [slim] Cover art only displays for first track in Album

2011-02-04 Thread wowo

If you have an normal album then all the tracks should have the same
album art.
If SBS scans an album with tracks with different embedded album art,
Squeezebox Touch shows only the album art of the first track.
In the web interface you see for the album the album art of the first
track but when you play an another track you see the right embedded
art.
If you want to see the right embedded album art on the Squeezebox Touch
you can choose the more button (+) and then show album art (do not
known if this is the right name because I use another language)

I can advise you to look at your tags with an tag-editor for instance
Mp3tag.

Hi John,

Glad to hear that your up and running again. Music is great with a
Transporter!

I am guessing you have had good luck with Squeezebox and might even to
fairly handy when it comes to PCs and Networking. I noticed that you
joined the Forum in July 2007 and have just now completed your third
post.

Can I take it you have been happy with your Squeezebox Experience?

Enjoy the Music. Regards,

iPhone

It's been a largely uneventful experience to be honest, yeah a few
things could be improved, but I tend to not to fuss to much about
details if something basically works.

Thanks Gary. Interesting thread. My take away from that thread is that I
should get an Ethernet cable. The TCP ACK on the WiFi may induce noises.
