Got good on-air reports on the audio. I added a hand PTT button in the
mic cord.
Main use is for outdoor operation with my KX3 which is my 2m IF on
10-GHz operations with tripod-mounted dish.

Well...I'm blessed to live in a region with No* lightening activity, so
generally have ignored doing all the preventative work.
*We hear thunder about once every 4-5 years and see lightening even less
often.
But winter wind brings static build-up on exposed metal (antennas and
wires) so

K3 and have used it for FT8 as well as SSB contesting with just the
internal sound card of my computer for over 15 years. I have also used
inexpensive ($10) external USB sound cards when the internal sound card
doesn't

Please check the obvious things:
1) Is 'test mode' on?
2) Is the power level turned to zero?
3) Is the VOX on (for CW)?
4) Are you using the right antenna selection?
5) Is your key plugged in/wiring OK?
I know some of this is really basic, but
suppose cable radiation could be the cause vs antenna-antenna pickup.
Also have not tested IC-9700 harmonic output. Testing with K3 connected
to my 500w Bird term probably would reveal this.
Anyway thought it curious behavior for the K3 (SN 4340).

so I recently bought a
IC-9700 to replace the aged FT-736R. I love it for SSB or FM usage. But
its not cheap ($1500 range). But you do not need amplifiers with it.

Good part about digital modes is one does not listen to received
signals, so noise is not a hindrance; wear noise-cancelling headset if

pattern for noise reduction. It was shaped like a
long silver tube and I got a desk stand for it. It was a broadcast mic
so made fine quality AM on 2m with my plate modulated 5894 at 150w.
All that gear is gone, now.
Most of my station is now Elecraft.

That allows me to run my transverter at 12w in the shack (max output is
18w).
Of course I am using a K3 with KXV3 to drive to my transverter (no
overshoot). No external ALC for the K3.

Effective tail-ending is inherent in FTn if transmitted on a clear frequency
other than the target station's during the current QSO. Unlike CW, SSB or RTTY
