Thanks for the replies. I am running an XP Laptop that is only doing logging
during the contest. I will give the homebrew interface a try and see how
that works. I still mainly hand-key during the contest, but I am starting to
use two radios and I really need computer keying for that.

The advantage to using DATA A mode is that the compression is set to
zero and the Equalization is turned off. If you are also using SSB and
have compression set for SSB and/or are using equalization for normal
(speech) SSB mode, then it will be an advantage for you to use DATA A
I think the thing to do for those who want a big radio is to purchase two
K3's.
My boss bought a used K3 last week and I took it home to check it out
compared to my newer unit. I put them side by side on my desk, and the two
of them look awesome and impressive.

A cheap and dirty way to check your RS232 and the serial cable is to jumper
pins 2 and 3 of the K3 end of the serial cable (after it was removed from the
K3). Open up hyper terminal in Windows (start, programs, accessories,

I've received 25 votes so far and the rate of new reports has dropped to zero.
So here are the results.
There were 8 correct votes (including 2 split votes that I counted as 1/2 a
vote each). That is pretty good... I'm not sure I could have identified the K3

Richard, If you go to Yahoo groups, there a group for the Elecraft K3 and one
for the Expert Amp. I believe in both of them in the files section there is
a drawing for configuring the cabling for the K3 the Expert Amp and your
computer. From what I see in the K3's manual and the Expert Amp manual

refurbished (and off-lease) IBM computers for some time now. They are
always quite reliable and last me longer than other new computers that I

The refurbished K3 DSP boards carry the full 1 year

We used to send our techs out for a 6x9 hole saw when I was an audio EE
a few years back... Either that or speaker lube. Now that I've been
doing a lot of work on helping build an EMC chamber up I'll never forget
when we got some of the workers to help mop up an RF leak. ;)
