Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread Lyn Norstad
I can’t imagine how it would feel to know that I had laid out $4k two years
ago, and still be waiting for fulfillment. NO, actually I can.

Several years ago, an up-and-coming system integration business I had been
associated with for several years (as a VAR) was going thru many of the same
types of growing pains in bringing a wonderful new product to market. The CEO
vowed he would run the business as if they were broke, which they very nearly
were. But the employees were faithful believers in the company and the
product, and worked very hard to make it a success.

Early one Monday morning, I had a call from that CEO advising me that they had
sold the company to another industry player (a non-competitor) and that they
wanted me to join them for lunch to discuss the deal. My fear and trepidation
slowly disappeared that day as I met the new management “team” (with all the
old R team still hard at work), got viable answers to all the hard questions
and quickly recognized how an immediate cash infusion ($10 Million) had an
amazing ability to totally turn things around, grease the wheels, and create an
industry shakeup that precipitated a wave of further consolidation and rapid
development.

It was a win-win situation born out of the impending potential disaster we had
all feared.

Hang in there. Times might seem tough, but there are some very smart people at
work here.

The natives are getting restless and it would be good to hear something
official from Elecraft. It's been too long since we've heard much of anything.
I would like to know if I can expect my Group 1 order, submitted on August 8,
2019, has any chance of getting to me before summer, 2021 begins or is it
likely that I will have to wait another year. I could have asked much the same
question a year ago never expecting that a year from then, there would still be
no K4 sitting on my table by now. By the way, when I submitted my order the
expected shipping date was estimated to be November or December, 2019. That's
pre-pandemic.

Re: [Elecraft] Inventorying a K3/P3

2021-03-30 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

Hi,

First off, sorry for your loss.

As to options, and especially modifications, I very much would like
Elecraft to give each modification a number so there can be a sticker in
a radio that says:

This radio has the following modifications: 01, 02, 03, 04, 06, 08, 12.

That would make these things much easier.

For K2, K3, and the KX-en too late, but perhaps for the K4 this can and
should be done?

Re: [Elecraft] Inventorying a K3/P3 nk7z

2021-03-30 Thread Keith Trinity WE6R

Hi Dave;
Since it was here less than a year ago, no need to send it for updates.
If it hasn't been altered, you can get all the options/filters from the
menus.
If it has been reset for some reason, we can send you the configuration
file to re-load that was saved at last service.

We don't inventory every radio, but you could load that file into the
radio and then go thru the menus.
This would be a fairly accurate list unless you believe he
removed/changed any filters or options, in which case you will have to
open it up and take out the Sub receiver and open the sub receiver to
inventory all items.

Someone could also load that file into another radio (I believe it is
advanced mode of the K3 Utility lets you skip past the serial #
mismatch) then look thru the menus. Don't forget to save the host
radio's config file before doing this so you can restore it!

[Elecraft] kxat3 how to adjust

2021-03-30 Thread Wayne Suite
I have read that its possible to adjust the l and c values selected
manually up or down a value.

I have not been able to find a way to do it.

I have tried the mp command and the ak command without success yet a while
back someone talking on an email with Don indicated it was possible to do
this when recieving. I can use the ak to see which l and c values are
selected but I cannot seem to change them using ak010800; after sent the ak
response comes back ak030800; again which is what the tuner selected I want
to try l of 02 or 01 and then look to see how it affects the swr reading in
xmit.

Is this possible since the AK command only appears to be get and the mp
command returns mp000; when used while in the atu md or atu.data menus.

Thanks in advance
Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread David Gilbert

As the kids say, "cool story, bro."

None of it changes the fact that lots of people have put out a lot of
money with almost zero visibility into when they will get their product,
and the K4 situation doesn't have the significantly leveraged upside
that your story did.  There isn't the same risk/reward ratio here that
your example had.  Apples and potatoes.

There are lots of reasons why Elecraft could be granted some slack for
major and repeated delays in shipping the K4, but the part I don't
understand is the almost total absence of regular communication on the
delivery status.  It makes no sense at all.  If Wayne can find the time
to tell us about his latest pedestrian mobile contact he should be able
to tell his investors where the company stands on actually producing the
product that they paid for.

I'm just an interested observer here since I haven't ordered a K4, but
that doesn't change the fact that I sympathize with those who did.

2021-03-30 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
It is puzzling to see the lack of substantive information as other have
posted.  This has not been how Wayne and Eric and Elecraft have operated
in the past.

I don't believe it is asking too much for regular updates on delivery
dates.

Just because some are not happy with a delay does not mean that tehy
don't want the product.  This radio is a lot of money for many people.
I doubt they are doing so well that they can afford to chase off a
portion of their business.  It cost far more to bring in new customers
than it does to keep old ones.

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread stephen shearer
"Group 1, done by May" ??  Would be nice.  I am not going to hold my
breath. The few (2?), "I got a UPS package", were from orders entered
the first day.  Group 1 was not closed until Jan 2020??

"I Think" some of the communications from Elecraft are "hung up" with
the Ferengi print from the online event keeping Elecraft from
re-publishing any of the online event communication until the end of the
30 day "hold".  If I was running the online event, I would want
exclusive "use" of any publications for the full 30 days.  So, 16? Apr...

Yes, I could pay my $10 and see all the doc.  I was unavailable during
the actual event, so I didn't sign up at all.

The last I looked, the KX3 is back ordered, too.

I would not mind an additional 6 month delay, IF I was told it was
because Elecraft was moving to TN so that they could save 10% over
current cost/taxes in CA.  I don't expect a move to happen. So, 60 days
till the end of May, can they do it?

I placed my Group 1 order a week or so before Thanksgiving 2019...

David,

Is the customer set you are referring to and claiming to be sympathetic too
even in existence? Elecraft will refund money to anyone that asks. Wouldn’t
those that can’t have their money tied up have pulled out by now? Wouldn’t
those that are upset with the communications be gone by now??

It is puzzling to see the lack of substantive information as other have posted.
This has not been how Wayne and Eric and Elecraft have operated in the past.

I don't believe it is asking too much for regular updates on delivery dates.

Just because some are not happy with a delay does not mean that tehy don't want
the product. This radio is a lot of money for many people. I doubt they are
doing so well that they can afford to chase off a portion of their business.
It cost far more to bring in new customers than it does to keep old ones.

2021-03-30 Thread Hal Massey
I am curious. Did you miss the update that was done via the remote Hamvention a
few weeks ago. Group 1 clears in May?? Is your communication comment based on
lack of website info? Customer’s that paid (me) should get emails every week??
I feel like I have been kept in the loop. That’s quite different than being
over joyed by a delay...

We're in the midst of a pandemic. Elecraft is a small company, and
they've had COVID in house. Systems that were set up for people working
in their office/lab/factory break down when that isn't possible.

First off, thank you very much for the reply! I do appreciate it greatly!

That is the info I needed! I now know the menus will give me most of

anyone been in it! That makes things a lot simpler! I do thank you

We don't inventory every radio, but you could load that file into the
radio and then go thru the menus.
This would be a fairly accurate list unless you believe he
removed/changed any filters or options, in which case you will have to
open it up and take out the Sub receiver and open the sub receiver to
inventory all items.

Someone could also load that file into another radio (I believe it is
advanced mode of the K3 Utility lets you skip past the serial #

radio's config file before doing this so you can restore it!

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread Eric Norris
Elecraft is unlike all other world-class mfrs of amateur radio
transceivers. They are very, very small. They have to be to keep their
margins big enough to compete with giants who mfr marine, aviation, and
consumer electronics. They can't get away with marketing a KX4 that puts
out ONE WATT more than a KX3 and call it ALL NEW. If an engineer's house
burns down, they can't easily slide someone else over from another
project. Same with COVID.

If you ran a company like Elecraft, would you publicize every setback when
every single employee is critical? No, you wouldn't. Either give them
more slack, and wait, or go somewhere else and buy something else. But
please stop the endless whining.

K4s are out there--I hear them on in contests.

Eric has stated they hope to clear the Group 1 backlog by the end of May.
He has also stated that K4 production will ramp up by an order of magnitude
and more.

Remember the K3 rollout? KPA1500? NO COVID. NO WILDFIRES. I just passed
my two-week vax period, and I am older than almost everybody who works at
Elecraft. Do the math.

Asia plus cancelation of most all Ham conventions last year - just a lot to
endure in the last 12 months - I do not envy anyone trying to keep a business

Then just when you thing you’ve got it pulled together, you get a container
ship - with 20,000 container capacity(!), one of the worlds biggest ships
(over 4 football fields in length!!!) - wedged sideways across the Suez, and
400+ ships backed up behind - it’s crazy.

Try to buy a new quality bicycle today, say priced at $1k or more. The shops

extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the

FWIW, I have very little experience with RUMlog (or Skookum Logger which
may be a predecessor) but if you use RUMlog on your Mac you may be

I have run RUMlogNG for several years, including using it for CW
and RTTY contests. I have even hooked a protocol analyser up on
the RS-232 link between it and the radio to try to chase down a
problem. It has a very interesting approach to sending and
receiving CW and RTTY through the K3. It does both through the
CAT interface. To transmit, it uses KY and TB commands to keep
the radio from buffering more than 2 or 3 characters so the ESC
key will stop transmission promptly.

For example, to send AE6JV with the K3's response in [brackets]:

KY A;[KY0;]TB;[TB000;]
KY E6;[KY0;]TB;[TB200;]
KY J;[KY0;]TB;[TB200;]
KY V;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]
KY ;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]
KY
<04>;[KY0;]TB;[TB300;]TB;[TB200;]TB;[TB100;]TB;[TB000;]TB;TB000; etc.

I have not carefully traced the receive path.

The problem I was trying to track down is the failure to
correctly chain transmissions in RTTY mode. CW works fine. If,
for example, I press F4 twice to send my call sign twice, the
radio will transmit AE6JV E6JV, dropping the first character
from the second press of F4. I used my KX3 to monitor what was
actually being transmitted. I got lots of useful advice from
N6TV in running these tests.

If you're a RUMlog expert waiting for your K4 and want to discuss, feel

I won't say I'm a RUMlog expert, and I'm waiting for the K4 kit,
but if I can help, please let me know.
