Re: [Elecraft] Blue Displays and Visual Acuity
One place the K3 amber display doesn't fare well is in the QST magazine ads: it looks like a pink grapefruit. Can't say it is especially flattering. Other radios have a similar color: IC7200, FT2900, etc. Maybe amber is a bad color for magazine ink. However, the one that looks like the actual K3 color is the IC-R75 receiver ad. I wonder what color it really is... I don't think the K3 amber display is tiring at all. But I keep the LCD brightness set pretty low, at 2-3. The K2 display color is nice in videos. I used to add matching green subtitles (for the CW translations...). Haven't done any K3 vids yet but I don't think amber subtitles will work as well... 73, Drew AF2Z __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 and Yaesu FL-7000 - need help
Good morning K3 friends, a German Clubstation plans to use their K3 in combination with a FL-7000 PA during upcoming WAE Contest. I did a search on this reflector but didn´t find the infos I need to help those guys (I am not an expert in PA´s because I am 100% QRP ;-) If you are running K3 FL-7000 please share your experience. How do you use automatic bandswitching? Do you use the ALC? Best help would be a short description how to connect K3 to FL-7000. 73 de Peter, DL2FI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Blue Displays and Visual Acuity
I started the thread a few days ago as my first posting on the Elecraft Reflector and didn't appreciate the number of opthamologist hams using Elecraft. Thanks for the many inputs and it appears impractical to try and change the display. Personally, I find either green or orange as a background psychologically unpleasant; neither color has positive connotations. If blue impractcal I would like to see white on black similar to the older Yaesu rigs or an option in the IC 756 PRO III. Some colors are positive and others are negative. The images green and orange bring to mind are not positive (swamp, nausea, dull, boring) I don't foresee making any after-market changes here but hope Elecraft will offer some diplay options in the future. Selecting which display color option is obviously a very personal choice. It would be nice to have a choice. gdaught6 wrote: Alan wrote... Sounds great for heavier wires! Weedeater (string cutter) refills are available from almost any hardware store. Simple fishing line leader will do quite well to hold up reasonably light weight wire antennas too. If 'stealthy' is needed, you'll be using a light weight wire anyway. Magnet wire will work although the stuff I've seen is soft copper and stretches easily. The last time I needed a stealth antenna, I used some white-covered wirewrap wire from Radio Shack. Stronger, not prone to stretching and virtually invisible from a few feet away. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Check out the various plastic(?) strings for weedeaters at your local lawnmower repair. Re: [Elecraft] Stealth antenna insulators
I have to agree with VP8NO. I don't see why insulators would be necessary. If I were putting up a stealth antenna, I wouldn't be using #12 wire anyway. #18 stranded copper clad steel is much smaller and should last forever if not allowed to kink. And I'd use dark braided UV resistant nylon fishing line (monofilament is generally pretty shiny) for the support line, wrapped and glued to the antenna wire for a low profile connection. The most visible component of such an antenna would be the feedline. 73, Dave AB7E Mike Harris wrote: G'day, Why bother with insulators if you are using a non-conducting synthetic rope/string to hold the antenna up. Has anyone actually measured the RF characteristics of the various nylon lines available? Nylon is hydroscopic (absorbs water) and so is not necessarily a great insulator. I didn't know that and blithely used nylon as an easy-to-find insulating material until I had a nylon standoff in an RF circuit disintegrate quite unexpectedly. Re: [Elecraft] Stealth antenna insulators
I have no requirement for stealth because I live on five acres in the country. I would speculate that a big factor would be if you are using low, medium or high power and if it is raining or high humidity. Traps in multi-band antennas are designed for a few hundred ohms so I would think that a wet string that still has a few hundred ohms should perform very well. I would have no reservations about connecting a QRP rig and would feel OK with 100 watts. I would be careful with connecting a multi-kilobuck amplifier to a string. [Elecraft] K3 firmware rev. 3.19: PWR/MIC/CMP panel control lock; CW offset on mode change; misc.
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.19 (with DSP rev. 2.17) is now available. See release notes below. Please send problem reports to k3supp...@elecraft.com. Beta firmware load instructions can be found at http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 3.19 / DSP 2.17, 6-14-2009 * POWER-RELATED CONTROL LOCK: The PWR, MIC, and CMP controls can be locked by tapping '1' in CONFIG:PWR_SET. This is useful in some contests, such as Field Day, where a carefully-set up K3 might be used by multiple operators. Accessing a locked control flashes LOCKED. SPD/DELAY/MON functions are still accessible. Tapping a locked knob still displays the current parameter value, even though you can't change it. * AUTOMATIC CW VFO OFFSET ON MODE CHANGE: Allows switching quickly between SSB and CW mode without either you or the other station having to re-tune the VFO (often done on 6 meters and transverter bands). First, locate CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap ‘5’ on the keypad until you see “VFO OFS”. From then on, when switching to CW mode from any other mode, the VFO will be offset by an amount equal to your sidetone pitch (as set using the PITCH switch in CW mode). If the sideband most recently used on this band is USB, the VFO will be shifted UP; if it was LSB, the VFO will be shifted DOWN. Note: If you make frequent use of this feature, you may want to use CW reverse on bands where you use USB, and CW normal on bands where you use LSB. This results in perfect pitch matching when listening to a CW signal and switching from SSB to CW. * GHZ TRANSVERTER DIGITS are now shown for two seconds on any band change, if applicable (i.e. if transverter frequency is set for 999 MHz in menu entry CONFIG:XVn RF). This serves as a reminder of the actual band in use, since the MHz digits alone can be ambiguous. * AM MODULATION: Now closer to 100%. * TUNING VFO FROM ONE BAND TO ANOTHER WITH BANDS MAPPED OUT: This no longer alters CONFIG:BND MAP settings. * SYNTH UNLOCK WHEN USING PTT/CW: When using PTT, cancelling CW message play by tapping the key or keyer was sometimes causing the synthesizer to unlock. * CW SIDETONE STUCK WITH PTT: When using PTT, cancelling CW message play during a CW element was sometimes leaving sidetone on. * 6M CAN BE PERMANENTLY DISABLED: This is required for some countries. This would normally be done at the factory, but can also be done in the field with a PC program (contact customer support if interested). * MAX POWER LEVEL NOW 110 W (was 120 W): This is intended to reduce the possibility of excess KPA3 operating current on some bands. This might have occurred when using a high power setting along with low power supply voltage and/or a high load SWR. (Note: The recommended maximum power setting is still 100 W.) For Software Developers: * MONITOR LEVEL (ML) COMMAND: MLxxx (000-060 where 000 is OFF, in effect). Applied per-mode. * IC COMMAND NOW HAS A TX MSG PLAYING FLAG. The customs ones will tend to die in one or two generations of Windows. The class ones will survive longer, but USB itself will probably be superceded, and, unlike RS232, it is too complex for an individual to host it on top of the latest and greatest technology. [Elecraft] [K3] Intermittent low CW sidetone monitor after transmitting (huh?)
OK, here's the story: I've been having a strange problem with my K3. I'm using it with an external keyer (don't ask why - it's what I want for now), and also a footswitch. I've been on six meters a lot (I'm mentioning this in case the band means something) - and I've been doing a lot of CQing in CW. I use a Henry amplifier, which has clunky, slow T/R relays. Accordingly, I've got the T/R delay on the K3 set to go along with that. To prevent any switching back to receive on slightly-too-long pauses in my CQ, I usually step on the footswitch to keep the relays closed during the CQ. SOMETIMES (but not always), after the CQ is completed, and the K3 goes back into receive, there is a constant, low-level cw sidetone monitor still being generated. It's not as loud as the monitor usually is. If I tap the paddle to force it back to transmit again, the low sidetone goes away when it returns to receive. I don't recall seeing anyone complain about this. Any ideas as to cause, and, more importantly, a solution? [Elecraft] Help needed with K3 utility/install issues
I'm trying to update to the latest release level firmware. I first downloaded the newest install utility. This download and install went fine, and the new version of the utility runs fine and communicates with my K3. Before downloading the newer firmware, I thought I would first save my present K3 configuration. This is where I have a problem. When I try to save the configuration, I get an error message as follows: Power On Banner Error - K3 Get command failed to return the expected response after several attempts. So I can't save my configuration. Before this, I did type something into the banner field, but I'm running 2.02 firmware in the K3, so of course it wouldn't yet display. I tried to save the configuration several times with the same result. I also tried removing and re-downloading the utility program, but made no difference. So I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. Really would like to save my configuration before downloading the 3.11 level firmware. What should I do next?? Re: [Elecraft] Help needed with K3 utility/install issues
Craig: I'm the K3 Utility author. The diagnostic indicates that there is corruption of the data stream between the PC and the K3, and during save/restore configuration the utility is not at all forgiving (I can't store corrupt data and lie and say it was OK). If you are using a USB to Serial Adapter, please try changing the K3's RS-232 speed to 38400 bps, which is often the most reliable speed (I know this is counterintuitive). If this fails to improve the situation, please try a different cable; remove any devices (hubs and extensions) between the PC and K3 Utility. The Power on Banner caption on the message box is a bug, I've fixed the caption to say Save Configuration in subsequent versions of the K3 Utility (that are still in field test). Plus there will shortly be a USB 3.0 spec. I don't know if the connectors will be the same, or how backward compatible it will be with USB 2.0 (I assume 100%). There's a danger of linking your radio too closely to the world of PC's; the rate of technological change is incredible, and the rate of obsolescence is commensurate with that. That is something which I keep very much in mind with radios like the Flex, and the idea of PC-dominated radios in general - really, you're always potentially one Windows update away from breaking the rig. If the company goes out of business, or does not feel like supporting an X-year old, non-current version of their product, you are done. Over and out. Just my opinion. 73, Steve NN4X On Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 5:35 PM, David Woolley (E.L) for...@david-woolley.me.uk wrote: Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: For those who would want USB support for the K3 ... the cost and red tape required for Windows Certification are very significant for a small company. Although the sound card is more recent than the SB Pro, even though that established an interface standard, it looks like that isn't supported. You have to go back to serial ports and Epson 9 pin printers to find standards that have survived. USB devices come into two categories, ones which can be handled by class drivers, e.g. memory sticks, and some USB sound devices, and more custom ones. The customs ones will tend to die in one or two generations of Windows. The class ones will survive longer, but USB itself will probably be superceded, and, unlike RS232, it is too complex for an individual to host it on top of the latest and greatest technology. Whilst Elecraft remain in business, under the current management, they may well be prepared to update drivers, at a price, but if they don't USB radios will rapidly become doorstops. -- David Woolley The Elecraft list is a forum for the discussion of topics related to Elecraft products and more general topics related ham radio List Guidelines http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_list_guidelines.htm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 Lo P
Hello, I'm helping a friend who purchased a used K2. The K2 is a serial number 6xxx with a KAT2, KSB2 and KBT2. When tuning with the antenna tuner into a dummy load, sometimes The message Lo P appears on the display. It would also give the Hi Curr message with the current limit set to 2.5A. Does it seem right that the radio would draw that much current when tuning into a dummy load? Any info on this would be appreciated. I'm finishing up the DSP, 160m and KNB2 options for the radio but would like to get this fixed before making changes. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Load fails
What files are in your firmware folder that contains MCU revision 3.19? It should have hfpf0101.hex as well as hmcu0319.hex, hdsp0217.hex, haux0217.hex, dtbl0009.hex and tboot7.hex. The fact that your error message says it's trying to load hfpf0100 (.hex) suggests that you've got hmcu0319.hex and hfpf0100.hex but not hfpf0101.hex in the firmware folder you're loading from. You need the most recent hfpf0101.hex in the same firmware folder that you are loading MCU version 3.19 from. This is what I mean by mixing. The beta firmware zip firmware file contains a complete set of firmware files. All those files need to be in the firmware folder you're loading from. If the entire panel starts to glow, reduce CW speed. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jun 18, 2009, at 9:40 PM, Brett Howard wrote: Is it normal for the right side to run quite a bit warmer after installation of the KRX3. I did a quick google search and no nabble hits came up. I'd assume that the two regulators on the right side are running warmer because of the greater consumption. I assume that when the SUB is off that this will run cooler but haven't tested this yet... ~Brett __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html --- http://www.elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K144XV 2M Module Dynamic Range?
I'd like to know a little more about the K144XV receive performance. The Noise Figure is given as 2 dB, while the external XV144 has a NF typically 0.8 dB. This seems like a significant difference. The XV144 also has a high dynamic range front end - how does the K144XV compare? Neill F5VLD / G4HLX That makes two of us at least Neill.does anyone know about the dynamic range of the k144xv? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Lo P
Jay, The real answer is it all depends. Since this is a very recent K2 serial number, it may be that this problem has been present since it was built and was the reason that the original builder sold it - that is an unfortunate situation, but it must be considered. First, set your CAL CUR to 3.50 amps and try again. LoP indicates that the K2 is not developing adequate power to enable proper tuning for the KAT2 (it needs 2 watts to tune). Then set the K2 ATU menu to CALP and see if it will do a TUNE into a dummy load - first try at 5 watts power requested, then 10 watts and finally at maximum requested power. Does the HI-CUR message appear at all those power levels? Or only at maximum power? Next, try each band separately (doing the tests as above). Does the HI-CUR message appear on every band? or only some bands? After those tests, set the ATU menu to AUTO and do a TUNE into the dummy load. You should hear some relays click and after the tuner has set its L and C values to match the 50 ohm load, it should exit from TUNE. If all that does not produce satisfactory results, there is something wrong with the K2. To troubleshoot it, the first step is to remove the KAT2 and operate the base K2 directly into a 50 ohm non-inductive dummy load. If it does not produce good power output without HI Cur messages, then there is a problem with the base K2 - likely in the Low Pass Filters or with the T4 output transformer. We can help further if we have more specific information - what bands fail? what bands work? How much power is really produced? 73, Don W3FPR Jay Sissom wrote: Hello, I'm helping a friend who purchased a used K2.
