Re: [Elecraft] K3 Dual Watch
The ability to listen to two different frequencies... We need a definition of dual watch. As instituted in most 'I' brand radios, it is useless, IMHO, because it it not possible to tell which signal is on which frequency. Some 'E' brand and 'Y' brand radios allow one to hear a different frequency in each ear (or speaker), which is really the only way to tell who's where. I have no plans for a KX3 and have not read the manual, so I don't know how dual watch works in that radio. I found the same in the KX1 kit I've just finished - they were way too short to do the job any which way I tried. I finished by replacing them with longer steel fittings and hex nuts. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 battery holder screws too short!
Yes grinding down the nubs on the holders would allow another thread or two, but eliminates the room under the holder for the wires. I considered milling down the screw area from the top of the holder, but that would decrease the meat between the holder and the nub. They are just the wrong screws. The parts list says 1/8 inch length which is .125 inch, but they are actually about .102 inch or so from the underside of the pan head. Another .050 or .060 is required to do the job properly. An additional item I have is the sanding or scraping of the paint around the screw holes. I guess it's not too much to ask, but all the time you do it, you remember the wonderful tape over those areas on some of the other Elecraft products cabinets. I found that a #15 scalpel worked best for me, the sand paper is just too awful looking after getting down thru the paint. Would I pay an extra $50 if Elecraft paid the painters to tape those areas? I think I would, but I wouldn't know it :) Scraping the paint on the W2 case holes was painful as well. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 battery holder screws too short!
Chuck, Yes - grinding down the nubs was a bad move. I didn't measure my screws, but they were too short to even get one turn into the threaded hole. Like you, I suspect they are just too short for the job. To remove the paint from the case, I found the easiest way was to use a Dremel tool with a fine wire brush. I've used that method before on other projects requiring similar surgery. Makes For pretty quick work compared with sanding. Another effective way is to use those long, industrial strength emery boards that beauticians use for filing down women's acrylic fingernails. They are long, flat and flexible and rip through paint and lacquer coatings in a flash. They're also great for removing enamel coating from toroid wire if you don't want to crank up the soldering iron to burn it off. I use them a lot and a friend who is in the industry keeps me in supply. 73 John VK7JB -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX1-battery-holder-screws-too-short-tp7557213p7557239.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 For Sale--Estate of K7SVV
I've been helping K7SVV's widow dispose of much of his gear. We are now offering for sale a K3 in absolutely excellent condition. It is an early serial number, but very, very lightly used--I mean, really lightly used! Nevertheless, as a precaution, the K3 was sent to Elecraft for a thorough going over. All mods and upgrades have been added, so it is like one coming off the assembly line. It is in perfect shape! Elecraft states that it meets or exceeds all factory specifications. Here are the contents: K3/100---100 Watt model KAT3-Internal ATU KBPF3General Coverage RX module KXV3AIF Out and Xverter Interface Filters: 13 Khz Filter 6 Khz Filter 2.8 Khz Filter 1.0 Khz Filter 400 hz Filter Note that all filters are 8 pole versions. At retail, this unit would sell for just shy of $3600. The asking price is $2800, which is about a 20% savings. If interested, please contact me directly. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 battery holder screws too short!
It is unfortunate, but screw manufacturers do not specify tolerances on the length of the screws, so yes, the length will vary from batch to batch. If the 1/8 inch screws were really 1/8 inch long, there would be no problem. Since I build and repair a number of KX1s, I have ordered some black 2-56 x 3/16 inch screws and some black 2-56 nuts from McMaster-Carr just for the purpose of repairing loose battery holders. You can order from the same source, but you have to order a box of 100. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/7/2012 9:05 AM, VK7JB wrote: Chuck, Yes - grinding down the nubs was a bad move. Re: [Elecraft] K3 L4B
I am. Usually ok, but recently it gave a little snap when I hit the key. This can be caused by the rf from the K3 hitting the L4B before its slow relay is closed. So I increased delay TX DLY from 8 to 20 milliseconds and it cured the problem. My L4B has a transistor driver on the PTT line but this is not supposed to be necessary with the K3. But it doesn't change the key up time like an external relay would, and the cost was zero. What's your call, Keith? Re: [Elecraft] KX3-K confirmation ?
David My experience until the last week or so is that sales has usually responded pretty quickly with confirmation and an invoice to confirm the details. However they are suffering post Dayton I expect; in my case I changed my KX3 order from a kit to factory build last week and have had no confirmation or revised invoice as yet. [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q out span
The KX3 seems to have direct I/Q outputs to the sound card - which sounds really attractive to me. The manual says the span depends on the sound card sampling rate, like 48/96/192kHz. But it does not tell what kind of band width one can expect. As I read further, there seems to be a 15kHz limitation imposed by a default roofing filter, and this will go narrow automatically under certain conditions. Again, what kind of span can I expect, and will it depend on any filter settings or not? Re: [Elecraft] K3 L4B
This is not a good idea for CW operation, unless you keep the speed below maybe 20 wpm. The extra TX delay will severely upset the timing of CW elements (with either an external or internal keyer) at higher speeds. A QSK modification is a very good idea for CW or VOX SSB operation with this amp, as someone has already mentioned. On 6/7/2012 6:49 AM, Rick Stealey wrote: I am. Gernot The 15 kHz limit is only with regard to be dual watch function. The span you will be able to see on the software is dependent upon the sample rate of the sound card used. So if you use a 96 kHz sample rate sound card you will see just slightly less than that on the display. [Elecraft] KX3 #0325
My KX3, ordered at 0143 EST on 12/28/2011 arrived today. I decided to treat myself this time and purchased the fully optioned, factory-built and tested version. I was on the air and working DX on 15 meters 7 minutes after the scissors slit the packing tape. Still have not opened the manual. Even the power cord was provided, with tinned ends, for rapid connection to my station distribution panel. What a rig! What a concept! What a lot of reading I've got to do! One comment - which is in NO WAY a reflection on Elecraft - the paddle is clearly superior to the KX1's KXPD1, but it really is best fitted to iambic users and other kinder, gentler people. I am a violent bug basher who requires at the very least 6 lbs of dead weight. I will probably put the paddle back in the box, along with the microphone I'll never use, and leave a note for the kids to make sure to plug the paddle and mic into the KX3 before placing the rig into my folded hands and closing the lid on the coffin. As Bogey said, ...it looks like this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. 73, Stan WB2LQF K1#2994K2# 6980K3#5244KX1 #2411 KX3#0325 K9 (Cocoa the Chihuahua) Everything is QRP, even the dog. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Just to elaborate the circuit is here; http://www.somis.org/D-a-07B.jpg Mains 120v ac supply rectified to feed 150vdc + supply to the resistor volt drop speed up circuit is necessary to achieve the HC-1 or RJ-1A 2mS switch times good fo 35wpm, with no relay noise. 120 - 150 vdc is necessary to supply the circuit. Using 12v to 26v supply or the available L4B 27 vdc relay supply is a waste of time and too slow. 120vdc is the normal relay supply in the sb-220 (conv to FWB rectifier recommended) so is readily available for this circuit. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q out span
The I/Q bandwidth is discussed in the SDR Applications section of the manual. I quote: The RX I/Q outputs from a receiver are not “flat” over an infinite frequency range; the signal-conversion process results in some slope (decrease in gain) as you move farther from the center frequency. In the case of the KX3, the signal will be reduced by about 2.5 dB at +/- 24 kHz, 4 dB at +/- 48 kHz, and 7 dB at +/- 96 kHz. The spectrum amplitude on the display, including the apparent noise floor of the receiver, will “roll off” by these amounts. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 08/06/2012, at 6:49 AM, DF5RF wrote: The KX3 seems to have direct I/Q outputs to the sound card - which sounds really attractive to me. All, Please tune in this coming Tuesday 6/12 at 6pm PT / 9PM Et to the live broadcast of Ham Nation with Gordon West and Bob Heil, featuring yours truly, AE6LX, showing my video which explains the KX3 kit build. You may have seen the step-by-step photos that I published of the build process at http://www.worldwidedx.com/elecraft-kx3/139501-building-elecraft-kx3-kit-step-step-photos.html, but what I didn't tell you was that I also shot a high quality, up-close HD video of each major step, explaining the whole process. The entire 11 minute video will air sometime during the live Ham Nation broadcast, shown at http://twit.tv/hn. Let's see if we can knock their socks off with the turnout from the Elecraft enthusiasts! Wayne, I think I will just leave well enough alone. To avoid launching my new KX3 off the side of the desk, I will just use my 6 lb. Frattini. Quite the fancy weight for your rig Wayne :) I suggest using Fruitcake. 1. It is the heaviest thing in the universe. 2. It cannot be destroyed, it can only be given away. 3. All the Fruitcake in the universe was created in the Big Bang: Hydrogen [H], a little Helium [He], and Fruitcake [Fc]. Being the heaviest thing in the universe, it collected the H and He around it forming stars and galaxies. Some scientists call it Dark Matter which makes sense, I've never seen white Fc. 4. Galaxies merged, combining their Fc, and eventually the solar system was born, with it's share of Fc. By now, supernovae had seeded the Fc with other elements: Blueberry [Bb], Orange Peel [Op], Lemon Peel [Lp], Raisin [R], and Unknown Fruit That Sticks In Your Teeth [Uftsiyt]. Depending on where you go in the universe, you can also find Nuts [Nu] in Fc. The unknown stuff that holds this all together is called Dark Energy. 5. Fc is so dense that nothing can ionize it. Hence it is an insulator, except for that collected by my weird Uncle Jack which attracts lightning. I believe his is a rare isotope of Fc. 6. Little known fact: Sunspots are really chunks of Fc rising to the surface and bobbing around. If any were ever ejected and collided with the Earth, civilization as we know it would end. Some think this would be a good idea. Fortunately, it has never happened, which is pretty obvious since were still here, civilized or not. 7. Fc would certainly hold a KX3 down. It would hold an SX-28 down ... wait, the SX-28 did that by itself. Possibly it was made from Fc? Science lesson for the day, right here on Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] K3 L4B
This is not a good idea for CW operation, unless you keep the speed below maybe 20 wpm. The extra TX delay will severely upset the timing of CW elements (with either an external or internal keyer) at higher speeds. You're thinking of QSK, Vic. I don't run QSK, just semi break-in (or vox as Ele. calls it). Same way people have been running theirL4s and L4Bs on cw for 46 years! The TR4 wasn't qsk. The timing is only an issue on the first dit, then the relay stays activated. No problem. Re: [Elecraft] !
My set of paddles at home is a moderately heavy Begali (Magnetic Classic). My paddles for my mobile setup is a no-longer-sold Profi II by Schurr. It weighs something like 54 ounces, so it doesn't move much either! Although the Profi II is no longer available, there's a new model that looks very similar - very pretty with what looks like a bronze base and a built-in dust cover. It is both weighty and pricey - not for the faint of heart or faint of wallet! My Profi and Begali both draw about as much conversation as my K3. [Elecraft] KX3 SSB transmit ALC metering problem and temporary work-around
It appears that the KX3's voice transmit audio equalization (MENU:TX EQ) can interfere with ALC metering under some conditions. It can also impact the sound of the transmit monitor. We're working on it. The temporary work-around is to set TX EQ to flat. To do this, locate the TX EQ menu entry, then hold CLR (this is the hold function of the OFS/B knob). Then exit the menu. [Elecraft] K3 front headphone jack problem
I have K3, S/N 1884 running latest FW vers 4.48. Also using P-2 and KPA500 in the chain. While plugging in headphones into the front phones jack, the speaker no longer mutes and I am only able to receive one channel through headphones. The phones jack was working perfectly in the past. I checked to see if the config parameter SKR+Ph was mistakenly modified, but the parameter was still set to NO I also attempted to load a previous FW version, but this did not alleviate the problem, so I switched back to the latest FW. I noticed on past reflectors that others have experienced this problem, but I did not see any definitive response. I am hoping that I don't have to run a complete re-set. Has anyone who has experienced this problem been able to figure out a solution? Tnx for your input. [Elecraft] How to set up DSP Radio on Mac OS X with your KX3
I made a quick video (8 min) on how to set up and use DSP Radio on a Mac with your KX3. [Elecraft] New K3--CW QRQ Problem
Hey all, I just built my new K3-100. All seems to be fine except when I try to use CW QRQ mode. When I select this mode, I only have about 5 watts of power output no matter where the power setting is. Elecraft says that the CW QRQ mode has nothing to do with power output, yet I have the problem. I am using the built in wattmeter and an external wattmeter. When I switch CW QRQ off, the power comes back to full. I did a reset at Elecraft's recommendation and it did not resolve the problem. I also loaded the newest firmware (which it should have had anyway) and no solution to the problem. Any ideas out there 73, Mike WB0SND Michael Marx sndtu...@vacuumtubes.com www.vacuumtubes.com SND Tube Sales 105 N. Re: [Elecraft] K3 L4B
The problem is that the K3 does not produce good CW when the TX delay is set to more than about 14. Nothing to do with QSK in this case. On 6/7/2012 5:43 PM, Rick Stealey wrote: This is not a good idea for CW operation, unless you keep the speed below maybe 20 wpm. No problem. Fred, is your middle name Grommit? What's that? The moon is made of cheeze? Oh, no.. David G3UNA On 08/06/2012 00:02, Fred Jensen wrote: On 6/7/2012 3:28 PM, kevinr wrote: 6 x 2 x 0.5 gives 6 cu in. The going price for a gram of osmium is $61 which makes your weight cost about $134,947 not counting machining, mounting, plus shipping and handling. No need to thank me, I'm retired, and I have a lot of time on my hands. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
