Given that the regular oscillator in the K3 is better than many if not most amateur radio HF transceivers, I do not believe you will see a noticeable improvement with the higher quality TXCO. As far as I know the typical HF user will not notice any improvement by having the TCXO in standard (sane?) operating conditions at HF to 6 meter frequencies. So in short, the stock K3 is more than adequate for PSK-31 operating. The stock XO is +/- 5 ppm (0-50 C) TCXO standard (@49.380 MHz). The upgrade is to +/- 1ppm. The average user won't notice the +/- 4Hz improvement. I believe many users would have issues accurately calibrating their K3 to +/- 1ppm. As far as I know _reception_ of WWV/CHU's HF (or WWVB LF) signals are not that accurate. A GPSDO (GPS disciplined ovenized oscillator) would be typically used to in that situation. My understanding is that beside amateur metrologists (e.g. time-nuts), and the typical users of the upgraded TCXO are microwave perhaps mobile/rover VHF operators who use transverters to multiply the K3 HF output to the higher operating frequency, where you want minimal error (i.e. drift, jitter) in the K3's oscillator, because this error will be magnified (multiplied) by transverter as well. -Michael, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. On Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 11:41 PM, Steve Kallal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry, but I'm not sure I agree. By that definition many radios since the 80s would be SDRs. Not many radios from the 1980s are SDR, Affordable DSPs from the 1980s didn't have the bandwidth necessary to sample from the IF, (ideally after the 1st mixer on receive) rather than the AF. It wasn't until the late 1990s that cheap and powerful DSPs suitable were readily available, as far as I know. My definition of an SDR is a radio that could be radically changed in functionality by a software change. Perhaps the K3 fits that definition with firmware changes. But does the K3 modulate or demodulate a signal using analog or digital techniques. I am ignorant about the K3's architecture. Yes the K3 does modulate and demodulate the IF to produce a human readable audio / digital output. Personally I think a good rule of thumb is whether the radio could theoretically add a new operating mode with only software changes. In the case of the K3 this is true. For example Elecraft could (ignoring patent / technology licensing issues) add broadcast shortwave DRM support through a firmware update that the end-user could perform. For example, early SSB rigs used a balanced modulator that nulled the carrier. Then a filter selected LSB or USB. I think true SDR would do that entirely in software. How does the K3 generate SSB? A pure SDR would have a ADC / DAC (optionally with power wideband amp for transmission) connected to antenna. In many cases a compromise with an analog RF front-end, typically consisting of 1 or 2 mixers for frequency translation and filtering. The closest to a pure SDR that I personally know of is the GNU Radio and certain USRP modules. As I understand it, some of the improvements in the Flex-radio 5000 are because of an improved analog RF front-end I believe. -Michael, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Maybe a silly question, but is the DMM's batteries fresh? If it has the half-dead cheap old batteries that it came with, the reading may be off a bit too much. A sanity check of comparing the measurement to ones done using the internal voltmeter could help detect if that is the problem if you don't have a fresh battery on hand. I measured the voltage on the LM29307-8, and it has 12.23V at the input, but only 7.53V at the output. The 78M05 has 4.93V at its output. I would expect closer to 8V out of the LM2930T-8 but it is with spec (7.5-8.5V from the LM2930 datasheet), and the input voltage is fine (should only need 8.6 or 9V input to work correctly. -Michael, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. In a roomy radio work area a linear is nice and simple. It can also heat the room which is nice in Canadian winters. If you have a tiny area or will often move / carry the power supply you will likely want to choose a switching power supply. I personally have a 23A 13.8VDC Samlex model 1223. I've used it on both 120 and 220VAC with no problems. It requires an easy but many adjustment to switch input voltage so if you want to use it for international travel look for a model that works with any input AC voltage. Just about any will handle both 50 and 60 Hz with no issues. Whats the difference between switching supplies and not switching supplies? Pros and cons... The main factors are size/weight, efficiency, and RF noise. Switching power supplies are lighter and sizer for equivalent power output. Switching power supplies are more efficient at converting AC input to high current regulated DC output 80%-90%+ efficient versus about 30-60% efficiency for linear PS. This causes the amount of heat generated to vary based on the design type, the heat is a waste by-product of the inefficiency. Switching power supplies use a high frequency (20kHz - 2 MHz) in their conversion process, these can cause harmonic distortion in the RF frequency range unless properly filtered. I believe switching supplies will always raise the noise floor due to the nature of how they work, but I believe they can be filtered and shielded enough to make them usable in all but the most demanding to weak signal applications. I'm wondering that ELECRAFT hasn't devoloped PS to match design for K2 or K2/100? Three reasons I can think of are: A linear supply is boring design wise and very easy to home brew (as hard as a home brew QRP antenna tuner) and a large transformer needed to power the K2/100 is heavy to ship, and I suspect the economics were not attractive (Astron have the majority market share of the US amateur radio market). -Michael, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. You really need none, the K2 is a usable rig on its own. Of course many hams, myself included, like additional features. :-) It depends on how you plan to operate. If you want a QRP in the field radio then the basic model, perhaps with the built-in antenna tuner (KAT2) is likely all you need/want. If you want a more of a contest radio then KPA100 power amplifier, KNB2 noise blanker, KDSP2 DSP, KAT100 ext. tuner, and if you want the KSB2 SSB module might be the what we want. Personally, K2 with KPA100, KSB2, and KNB2 would be my first add-ons. -Michael Taylor, VE3TIX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Do *not* attempt to remove the thick plastic material on either side. The use of coax is AFAIK* to prevent the probe from picking up stray RF energy from the powered up radio under test. The banana plugs are used as the standard connectors to a DMM. If I have to use coax is there a trick to unraveling the braid ?? I cannot seem to get the tips of the banana plugs to accept solder. I used my wire cutter to make a parallel cut to the braid (parallel to the length of the cable) to allow the braid to pulled to one side of the insulation and then twist the braid into a wire. This might not be the best solution, but I filled the small hole in the banana plug with solder, heated the solder, and let the braid (and repeat for the wire inside the coax insulation) rest in the pool of solder until it cools enough to hold it in place. Remember to put the plastic covers inline before soldering. As always, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Another self-guided title that a youngster could easily follow is _Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics_ by Stan Gibilisco, but it does not have any experiments if I remember correctly. I'm a little hesitate to encourage young children learning about household wiring, for a couple of reasons, first they are too young to use currently. Second, by the time they are old enough of it to be of any value they might confuse facts (is ground brown or green?), and some of the facts (i.e. NEC) may have changed. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
