[Elecraft] K3 General Coverage
Curious as to how others access the short wave bands. I can add and subtract the ham bands and how they display when I use the Up/down buttons for the Band access. That works great. Is there a software switch somewhere that will add the shortwave bands into the list when I use the UP/down Band buttons? Such as being on 3.5, hitting up and going to 4.0 Mhz, then up to 5.0 Mhz, etc. Is there an easy way to access the bands or do I need to put them in the memories somewhere? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 Macro Questions
I'm missing something Here are my two macros MN053,DN;DN;MN255: MN053;UP;UP;MN255; One brings the audio from the front microphone jack and the other brings the audio from Line In in the back for FT8. If I run the macro editor manually, the macros work. If I execute them from the PF1 and PF2 keys, they bring up the MIC SEL menu and there they sit. Any ideas? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 Audio
I have a K3, serial #5278, that's had an receive audio issue for almost as long as I've owned it. When I turn the AF gain nearly or completely counter clockwise, the audio goes to full volume. The only way to fix the problem, is to quickly turn the AF gain back up and down a few times. Many times, I'll want to turn the audio all the way to answer the phone or talk to someone in the shack, and the audio goes to full volume. Many times, if I reload the DSP software, the issue goes away for a few months. I have the latest software loaded. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe the AF gain pot needs to be replaced? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Fixed
Last evening, after some advice from WB9CIF, I did a little more testing and found that the KAT3 would do nothing regardless of Antenna port or what actual antenna was selected. I went into Config and told the K3 there was no tuner. Cycled the rig and then told the K3 that the tuner was installed and set to Auto. Now everything works as it should. Glad that's resolved and it wasn't the antenna on the tower in a Michigan upcoming winter. [Elecraft] K3 KAT3
My K3 seemed to develop a problem on 20 meters this evening. Trying to work Marquesas this evening on 20 cw the K3 would not transmit and basically no receive. I checked every other band and all worked as usual. The moment the radio went into transmit, I received Hi SWR on the screen with or without the antenna tuner I then reloaded all of the software and still nothing. I tried to force the tuner into auto tune by selecting my 160 meter dipole for 20 meters and still nothing. I finally went into the Config menu and disabled the KAT3. All now works. I never use the KAT3 anymore since I have the KAT500 and KPA500. Has anyone else had the KAT3 fail on 20 or do I need to open the rig up and reseat all of the contacts? Thoughts? [Elecraft] KAT500,KPA500
Good evening everyone. I just added a used KAT500 to my lineup (waiting for the KPA1500 backlog to clear before I order) and it's working great. The person that I purchase it from did not include the RS232 cable that has the small data jack on the one end to program the KAT500. I use one line to the coax switch at the tower so I need the KAT500 to remain on the same antenna port. The previous owner used all of the antenna connections so as I change bands on the K3, the KAT500 follows, as it should, and selects the antenna port previously programmed. I believe I am suppose to be able to program this manually but I'm not able to get the antenna port to remain as I change bands. My quesitonsCan I program the KAT500 through the PC connection to the KPA500 (I haven't tried that yet)? Do I need to order the cable from Elecraft? Can I do this manually and I just didn't follow the instructions correctly? Thanks everyone. [Elecraft] PTT-ERR
Hi everyone, Since I upgraded the software on my K3 last time, I would get PTT-ERR messages when using FSK/RTTY every now and then. Now it seems to be happening during a RTTY transmission. I know there were some changes in the K3 software but I can't figure out how fix this issue. I'm using a RigExpert TI-5 interface which is connected to the computer via USB and then to the K3 with their interface cable(s). I'm using MMTTY with Hamscope for my software. It always worked great previously to this last upgrade. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks. Hi everyone, I posted about 10 days ago regarding my Macro 1 and 2 not working. I upgraded to the latest firmware/software and modified the macros. Macro 1: MNO53;DN;DN;DN;MN255; Macro 2: MNO53;DN;DN;DN;UP;UP;UP;MN255: If I execute the macros from the K3 Utility, they work just fine. If I execute them from PF1 or PF2, I am brought to the MIC SEL and have to manually select the mic input. Prior to the latest software release, they worked fine on PF1 and PF2. Wayne guided me in adding the UP to Macro 2. Am I missing something else??? Happy New Year to all and 73. Hi everyone, I have two Macros set up to change the audio input on my K3 from the front panel to the Line In on the rear panel. They worked fine until one of the latest big releases: Macro 1: MNO53;DN;DN;DN;MN255: Macro 2: MNO53;DN;DN;DN;UP;MN255: Macro 1 sets the K3 to the mic connector on the front and Macro 2 sets the input to Line In on the rear panel. When I execute them, they come up to the display and I have to rotate the dial to select the input. Previously, they just worked. Any ideas? Thanks. Serial number 5278 MCU 5.14FPF 1.19DSP 2.83 If I hit the config button after power up, the error goes away and doesn't return until the next power up. [Elecraft] K3 Memory Question
I have my K3 memories setup so I can hop and skip around the bands and modes. I use the K3 memory manager and it works well. For instance 20 mtrs: 14.005 CW - Memory 27 14.080 FSK D - Memory 28 14.195 USB - Memory 29 On 30 mtrs I have: 10.105 CW - Memory 24 10.120 CW - Memory 25 10.140 FSK D - Memory 26 However, every time I go to 10.140 (Memory 26) I have to change the K3 from DATA A to FSK D. I've deleted the memory, rewritten it but it won't stay on FSK D I have every band set up like that and 30 mtrs is the only one I have trouble with. Has anyone seen this or know what I've done incorrectly? Thanks. [Elecraft] Hearing Loss
I've struggled with 35% hearing loss over the past 9 years. I finally spent the money and bought hearing aids 3 years ago - what a difference for normal every day life. However, they didn't help me much with ham radio but I suffered through by putting the small Heil headset ear piece on top of the hearing aid where the microphone was located. A month ago, I purchased new hearing aids (well my insurance did) and they are fitted with blue tooth. I wear a small blue tooth box around my neck which is connected to my cell phone via blue tooth. It's incredible talking on the phone now. But the best part - I have a small cable I plug into my external speaker and then into my blue tooth box around my neck. The audio from the K3 is pumped into both hearing aids. I can't believe the difference it has made. With the new QSK feature on the K3 and the blue tooth hearing aids, I can pick out CW signals that I would have never deciphered before. And, copying SSB is incredible too. If you can afford the hearing aids with blue tooth - don't hesitate. [Elecraft] K3/Heath SB-200
Hi everyone... Has anyone used a Yaesu FRB-757 Relay Box connected to a K3? The FRB-757 requires 12 volts but there is no indication in the instructions if the FRB-757 draws more than .5 amps. My Alpha 87a is going into the shop and I need my SB-200 as a backup. I haven't had time to put the Harbach Softkey mods in the SB-200 yet. Too much time playing with the K3! Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 erratic Receive volume
Good morning, I deleted your response to my question earlier this month. So here I go again... I had send an email earlier this month explaining my audio problem on my K3 #5278. Here's a copy of my message: Yesterday, my K3 suddenly decided to have erratic receive audio. If I have the audio at the 9 o'clock position and start to turn it counter-clockwise to lessen the audio, the audio goes to half volume. Sometimes I turn the AF gain completely counter-clockwise and I still have audio. I then have to increase and then decrease the audio to make it work correctly. I also brought up HRD and I can watch it on the software do the same thing. It happens ONLY when I am trying to reduce the audio. I received an email back to try and do a parameter initialization. I did that according to the manual and everything reloaded correctly. However, my problem still exists. Any thoughts on the problem? Also, what happens to the K3 radios that are donated to the FT5 dxpedition? Are they put up for sale by Elecraft? Just curious, they are probably nicely furnished. Hi everyone from cold, snowy Michigan. Yesterday, my K3 suddenly decided to have erratic receive audio. If I have the audio at the 9 o'clock position and start to turn it counter-clockwise to lessen the audio, the audio goes to half volume. I then brought up HRD and I can watch it on the software do the same thing. One thing...my external speaker was partly out of the K3 yesterday and I pushed it back in without turning the rig off. Had U1 blown, I would think I would have no audio Am I sending the DSP board in for repair? Thoughts? [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Fade - Update
Good morning everyone After hours of testing, it looks like my receiver problem was a failed PL-259 leaving the Alpha 87a to the junction box outside of the shack. After repairing that last evening, I was on 30 meters for over 2 hours and 40 meters for 1/2 hour and never lost the receive. More testing this evening but I'm optimistic the problem is fixed. Thanks for all of the ideas and comments. On a side note, the P3 with a large monitor attached made it easy to listen and WATCH the receiver in action. [Elecraft] K3 Receiver
Good morning everyone from snowy, frigid Michigan... I have K3 SN# 52XX and the receive seems to come and go on 30 mts - that's where I notice it the most but it happens on other bands too. My AGC settings are: AGC DLY - NORM AGC HLD - 0 AGC PLS - NORM AGC SLP - 4 AGC THR - 12 AGC F - 120 AGC S - 20 For example, the S-meter will be reading an S3 noise level and I can see it on the P3. Suddenly, the noise levels drops to zero and the P3 follows. If I'm listening to a CW signal, that signal drops too. If I hit the keyer and send a dit, the receive comes back. I've noticed this on a few of the other bands too. I am running the latest firmware and software but I've noticed it on the previous versions too. Ideas??? Thanks. I have a great K3 with a RigExpert TI-5. The TI-5 uses the RS-232 serial port on the K3. I would like to purchase a P3 and see that it also needs to use the RS-232 port on the K3. Is anyone else running the K3/RigExpert TI-5/P3 combination using some type of Y cable for the RS-232 port? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 - Small Knobs
I purchased a used K3 a few weeks ago and the small knobs (shift width) seem to be a little loose on the shafts. I see that they are push ons. Has anyone taken one off to check the spring? I can only surmise that I have to pull them quite firmly to get them to come off? Any help out there? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 Receive Question
Hi to all... The other evening, VK0KEV was on 15 phone, 21.314 to be exact, at about 9 pm local time in Michigan. I tuned the K3 to his frequency and could tell he was there but not good enough to copy if he came back to my call. I switched to my FT-1000MP Mark V and not only could I tell he was there but he I could have copied my call if in fact he would have come back to me. I switched back and forth between the two rigs for quite some time and the K3 was always marginal copy. I've noticed this on 10 meters before too. Am I the only one with this? [Elecraft] K3 Bandwidth in data mode
I can't find this in the manual so here goes. Any ideas how to increase the bandwidth when the K3 is in data mode? Right now, it's will only open to 200 hz and it's too narrow to tune around the band looking for rtty signals. Thanks. [Elecraft] K3/RigExpert TI-5
Good afternoon everyone I just received a RigExpert TI-5 with the factory-made cable for my K3. I've installed it as directed and I get the K3 to transmit using MXWin software, I can get the frequency/mode to change on the K3 but not much else. I have the Line-In on the K3 turned on,etc and just can't figure out why this won't work. Anyone else have the RigExpert and the K3 that could point me to a configuration I might be missing on the K3? Thanks. [Elecraft] K3 Configuration Question
I have K3 #2808 that I purchased used about 6 months ago. This week, I added the KAT3 antenna tuner and the 400 and 250 Hz 8-pole filters. All I can say is WOW!!! Now for my questionIs there a way to make the frequency follow the mode per band (or has this been discussed already and I missed it)? For instance, if I was on 14.228 on USB and changed to CW where I was last at 14.005, is there a way to make it follow the mode for that band? Then if I went to data where I was at 14.080, can it go to that point? Just curious if I missed something in the manual. Have a great Thanksgiving weekend everyone. I love my K3.
