Re: [Elecraft] Astron RS-35M Hum

2023-10-03 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Here's the resolution to my Astron RS-35M Hum issue.

First my thanks to all who replied on and off list.

With the transformer isolation pads installed the hum was noticeably reduced
and did not change with load. But it was still noticeable. So I looked at the
bridge rectifiers to see what was required to change them and discovered that
one of the six connections had never been soldered!

The only hum now on this 5 year old PS is low level and you have to put your
ear to the cover to even hear it. It's the same as my never-hummed 14 year old
unit if you put your ear to the cover.

It appears that inspection/QC missed this one.

Consider the thread closed.

[Elecraft] Astron RS-35M Hum

2023-09-29 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Astron RS-35M Hum (and probably other Astrons).

I've found some posts in the archives related to this topic so perhaps a bit OT
but hopefully of general interest.

My Astron RS35M developed a hum that increased with increased load. Otherwise
working OK but became annoyingly loud.

My solution was to insert a round rubber pad at each of the four mounting
screws between the chassis and the transformer.

3/4" OD x 1/4" ID x 1/8 inch thick.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJPF9QMZ

The hum now is very low. Nothing that would otherwise stand out if I weren't
listening for it. And it does not change with load or increased load.

So the problem seems to be mechanical coupling between the transformer and the
chassis with the hum amplified when the cover is on the PS. Likely varies with
any given batch of transformers. My much older RS-35M exhibits no hum at all
even under load.

[Elecraft] K4 eHam reviews

2022-05-08 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
There are now well over 700 K4s in deserving hands. I was surprised to see so
few reviews of it on eHam.

>
My review? I've had my K4D for just a very short time but I do plan to post a
review once I can force myself to stop operating it.

When I first got my K3 I would sometimes think "I wish it did XYZ." Only to
discover that it did. And more than once. With the K4 I'm finding things I
hadn't even thought of. A superb job. I'm looking forward to the new features
in future software releases.

So if you can make the time to post a review on eHam, I'm sure Team Elecraft
will appreciate it.

Re: [Elecraft] Spectrogram for MAC?

2022-02-21 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
CocoaModem is an excellent program. But it's 32 bit so it won't work after Mac
OS 10.14.6 (Mojave). All Mac OS after that require 64 bit applications. The
developer hasn't supported it for years but the code is free and available for
anyone having the skill to update it to 64 bit.

In your print dialog box look for "print background" and make it unchecked. You
could then print a white background as well as "print as a pdf." At least
that's how it works on a Mac OS.

2020-10-18 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Like K5MWR, my K3 & KPA1500 work correctly with the K3 going to the alternate
power setting when the 1500 is switched in Standby.

K3: Firmware 5.67 Power Set per Band; Tuning power Normal.

KPA1500: Firmware 2.38 Band Change Standby = No.

Neither unit is connected to a computer for any control functions. The sole
connection is an outboard analog to USB interface for the digi modes.

I'm open to checking any other settings that might illuminate.

Re: [Elecraft] Two instances of WSJT on K3s with SubRX?

If you have a P3, load 50.313 and 50.323 into memory to be able to toggle

Of course I'll only be able to transmit on the instance that has the Main
RX but it would be handy to be able to see both.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2020-05-07 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
Comfort is just one consideration. If you use Bose QC35s with Bluetooth there
is a delay that increases over time. No problem listening to music. But if you
watch TV the delay becomes intolerable.

For BT use to watch TV you want a set using the Qualcomm APTX LL (low latency)
codec.

The Bose 700s don't use the APTX codec yet they don't have the delay of the
35s. So there's likely more than one LL codec.

Delay is not an issue when using a cord vs BT.

Re: [Elecraft] Location of VFO B on the K4

2019-05-25 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
I always have the DX on VFO A on my K3 because this allows quick adjustment of
receiving controls - NR NB Width Shift etc - not so straight forward if the DX
is on B.

With VFO B wide open it's much easier - for me - to assess and move around in a
pile up.

Everyone has their method. This works for me with the purpose of spending as
little time as possible in a pile up.

There's no right nor wrong - just different.

Ergonomically you might not have laid out something the same way but you'll
likely get use to it fairly fast.

Re: [Elecraft] Location of VFO B on the K4

2019-05-25 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
I use the B VFO control very often. Once I tune to a station that's operating
CW split, I press the PF1 button on my K3 to run a macro that turns on the
second receiver, sets its bandwidth and enables TX up 1 KHz. My hand then moves
to the B VFO control for TX frequency adjustments based on my success vs what I
hear the DX send and what I see on the P3.

I almost never use RIT.

I too would have placed the K4 B VFO knob in a location similar to the K3's.

Taking a closer look at the K4, I see four programmable buttons (vs two on the
K3). If I were to use PF1 for the same macro as above my hand would already be
right there to tune the B VFO.

Of course the proof is in the actual experience. I suspect getting use to
position of the K4 B VFO control will be quick.

Looks like cognitive science at work.

Re: [Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-28 Thread Steve Lawrence via Elecraft
If one wants to use cocoaModem for RTTY, PSK or the other modes it supports,
note that it runs fine under Mac OS 10.12 and has been reported to run under
Mac OS 10.13 (I personally haven't tried it.)

cocoaModem is a 32 bit program and possibly won't run under OS 10.14 and above
that might require programs to be 64 bit. As of 9-24-2018 see:

>

About this Mac > System Reports > Software > Applications will show which
programs loaded on the machine are 64 bit compatible.

The source code is available for cocoaModem but the developer hasn't supported
the program in quite some time.

Macs as supplied with OS 10.14 and above could have a problem with cocoaModem -
which is an excellent program for dual receive split RTTY operation.

So it's more than just which Mac to get, it's will the machine run the
applications you want to run.

If anyone has run cocoaModem under 10.13 or 10.14 please report.

There is just so much any manufacturer can do to protect an operator
from him or herself. The K3 already has the delta f light, the SPLIT
indicator on the display (TU W2ZK - I'd forgotten that) and frequency
readout for both VFOs. As one who has made his share of errors with
the K3 and other radios, there is simply no substitute for just
learning how to use any radio. I've been puzzled more than a few times
by the K3 only to find the answer with RTFM.

The real problem with split errors is the insidious nastiness of the
cops when a quick RSE up will do (and the DX isn't TX!), or perhaps
a Talk cluster message that no one else sees. Either would be far less
disruptive.

Thanks Lyle - I just found a work around:

LIN OUT = NOR, SUB RX ON -AND- LOCKED to the MAIN = same audio and
fixed level in both channels.

Have to remember to unlock VFOs when operating digi modes split.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 KBT1

2004-08-27 Thread Steve Lawrence
Mike - A new design could have a sealed holder for the batteries or at
least some sort of tray. But I don't share your general concern if the
batteries are of established quality and the charging circuit is
designed correctly.

Speaker wise, I use stereo phones so a jumper from the board to a
separate connector on the back of the top for an external speaker would
preserve the existing functionality that I prefer.

I would *not* be comfortable charging batteries inside the K1 case,
since
there's no barrier around the batteries to prevent chemical leakage on
to

the K1 PCBs.

A connector for an external speaker would be a simple add.

That connector is already there. The audio output to the speaker is
exactly
the same as the output to the phones. That's one reason it's an
advantage

to connect the K1 phone jack for for a mono plug (disconnect the ring
connection). Then the plug for mono phones or an external speaker can
be

inserted fully without shorting the audio to ground.

[Elecraft] K1 KBT1

2004-08-26 Thread Steve Lawrence
On my KBT1 I installed a set of RC connectors so I can swap tops. To be
generous, the KBT1 speaker is a compromise. I always operate with
headphones, so a speaker is otherwise superfluous for me.

What I'd like to see is a K1 top without a speaker that holds 10-12 AA
NiMH cells and the circuitry for charging them with a connector on the
back for the charging voltage input. A connector for an external
speaker would be a simple add.

In other words, I rather have an optional plug in speaker when needed
rather than having to open up the K1 to charge the batteries.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K1 on USB CW

I'd be curious about the advantages that you see in a K1 LSB-to-USB
conversion.

73,
Mike / KK5F

Mike - I have no interest in listening to SSB with the K1 and have set
it up for an 80 kc spread. The advantage to USB CW is that it has long
been the standard for CW - even on 160-80-40 where sideband operation
is LSB - CW is still USB. I usually start tuning from the bottom end of
the band going up and it is often useful to hear what's up the band as
you tune higher. For casual operation, it is not that big a deal but in
chasing DX it is nice hear the split up frequency. With LSB you would
hear the last station worked only if he was below your listening
frequency rather than above, especially if the signal is weak. For
serious DX chasing, USB CW is the way to go.

That said, the K1 is a very impressive design with clever mechanical
assembly features and carefully thought out ergonomics. Wayne and Eric
really know their stuff.

By-the-way: The present day LSB - USB band standards have their roots
from years ago in the availability of 9 Mc crystals / filters - when
SSB was experimental and you had to build your own. 9 Mc plus a VFO
running at 5.0 to 5.5 Mc gives you 20m USB. Subtract the VFO frequency
and you tune backwards on 75/80m and you get LSB. There is actually
no reason for USB vs LSB on any band anymore. It's just convention from
the original experimental designs. 20m and above is USB, below 20m it's
LSB. You'll occasionally hear some DX on 20m on LSB to keep the crowd
away.

I'd be interested in anyone's attempts at shifting the K1 to USB CW.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: K1 on USB CW

2004-06-17 Thread Steve Lawrence
Vic - As I recall from about a million years ago, when the hardware was
actually built, when you subtracted to get to 75m, the sideband
reversed. If not, the standard on 160-80-40 today would be USB - but it
isn't.

73, Steve WB6RSE

On Jun 17, 2004, at 4:59 PM, Vic Rosenthal wrote:

This is just wrong. Say you generate a USB signal at 9 MHz from a 1
KHz

audio tone. The (suppressed) carrier of the generated USB signal is at
9.000 MHz and the upper sideband is at 9.001 Mhz. Then mixing with a
5.0 MHz VFO would give sum frequencies of 14.000 and 14.001 MHz as well
as differences of 4.000 and 4.001 MHz. This is USB in both cases.

Of course, the VFO would tune in opposite directions.

Even a CW operator like me can add and subtract!
