Aaron I usually fit a small switch mode PSU (1A to 3A) to my control box to power proximity switches and relays. Some breakout boards will supply 24v already but I always provide my own 24v. I am not sure about the 5V units but as far as I know the industrial quality stuff can run from 10V to 3

Aaron Those switches need to be powered. Normally 24v will be good. So check the specs of that device and it will show one wire to 24V, one to ground and the other to the pin ( I cant remember the colors). These switches can be either NPN or PNP output but that should not worry you to much if y
