Re: [Enigmail] Need help starting to use Enigmail and GPG with Thunderbird 68

2020-10-08 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi David,

  Today, I
followed a checklist and downloaded GPG4 and created the
"pair" of keys.  I have a screenshot of the "fingergprint" of
the pair, but not the actual keys - don't know where they were
  stored, if at all.

A fingerprint enables you to verify that the key is the one you
created, it does not help to recover your key.

Thunderbird
can't find them. Then I installed Enigmail - it found GPG
and the keys

Thunderbird itself has no connection
to OpenPGP/keys. Enigmail does have, and when GPG sees them AS
PUBLIC/PRIVATE key PAIR, you're safe.

But I still can't find the "Wizard" for
setting up the system.  Enigmail has a configuration page with
about 8 or so tabs across the top - but they don't match the
"setup wizard" screenshots . . . Again, the Menu par at top of
Thunderbird does NOT have "OpenPGP" button/link. Does anyone have
a CURRENT checklist for setting up and configuring and using
  encryption?
These config screens have nothing to do with the keys. You would
need the Enigmail/OpenPGP menu. However, Enigmail is just ONE
frontend, you may well use any other.
First things first: Your message indicates that you are on
Windows. In Windows, GnuPG "home" directory (if left to default)
is "%APPDATA%\GnuPG". You may enter this exact string as path in
the Windows Explorer "Address bar" (NOT Internet
Explorer). Copy that whole directory to a USB thumb drive (you
should have done so long ago).

To export your keys to a few files, you may use CMD (the Windows
"terminal") and the command "gpg --export-secret keys" (for your
PRIVATE keys) and "gpg --export" (for your PUBLIC KEYS).
However, Enigmail tries to do all the migration for you – once it
runs. If you do not have an Enigmail/OpenPGP menu (neither in the
top nor in the toast menu), something's odd. I'd advise to
uninstall Enigmail, to make sure you download the latest version
suitable for your TB version and reinstall that.
You were not talking about migration to TB78, were you? If I
got you right, you just created your keys but did not use them
productively or give them to many people. In this case I'd
advise you to abandon all your 68.x efforts and Enigmail at all,
and start afresh with 78.x, and generate new keys there.

This list deals with Enigmail issues only.
IF you use Enigmail, please state

your OS (such as Windows or MacOS) and it's VERSION

Re: [Enigmail] Error

2020-08-30 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Sarah,
there certainly is no "trick". GnuPG
(via Enigmail) informs you that it's not able to locate the
private key necessary to decrypt your draft. Once you saved it,
there must have been another key, probably a key that you
replaced by a new one. If you still have a backup copy of your
old key(s) (public AND private key parts that is), then you may
easily import them using GnuPG in the commandline, or Enigmail's
Key Manager.

Re: [Enigmail] Differences between Enigmail and OpenPGP in Thunderbird 78

2020-08-28 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Kai,

Simply use the settings to change the
master password, that has the result of using the improved
protection. In theory, if you aren't worried that someone
might already have broken your old one, you could even reuse
the same password - that is - enter the same same password in
both the "old" and "new" password fields
  this step should NOT be
required to be carried out by the user! Instead, if TB notices
that it's still using the old algo, it should re-encrypt itself
to the new standard (as soon as the correct old passphrase is
entered correctly). Also, old database files should be
overwritten and then deleted by Thunderbird itself.

Hi Jan-Peter,

My Buttons for encryption and signatures
are gone. Editing the IconBar and adding the Buttons is not
working. After closing the Mail Editor and reopen they are gone
again. How can I add them persistently?
I confirm this behavior on Arch Linux TB 68.10.0 + EM  2.1.7

Please use the menu until this is confirmed as bug and fixed. Is

Re: [Enigmail] Confusing Warning

2020-07-02 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Mark,
if GnuPG/Enigmail report "BAD signature" then either was the
message tampered with, or (which is more likely), Microsofts
Mailing List software broke their own signature. So that's
something that you should report to Microsoft (and provide them
with the full mail source code as it resides in your inbox now).
The part of your question concerning the ambiguity of which part
is verified by the signature may be related but is an issue that
is not fully solvable by enigmail since parts of that mail would
need to be displayed separately, ultimately leading to a different
  Thunderbird UI.

Re: [Enigmail] Wie kann ich die Passphrase zurücksetzen oder neu vergeben? How to reset or new create a passphrase?

2020-05-16 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi "smith",

I saved a revocation certificate [email
(0x12345678) rev.asc] May this help in my concern?

A revocation allows you to render your public key "invalid" so
that you may update it on public key services. If one (re)fetches
it, he/she knows that you no longer want it to be used (for
whatever reason). It does NOT help you read messages that have
been encrypted to the corresponding key. If you use a search
engine or read Enigmail docs, you'ss find the steps how to do
  that.

Or is it a better possibility to create new keypair as you say
(may I then create a new passphrase)?

If you really forgot your key's passphrase, have it nowhere (safe)
written to, that's your only option. Make sure to have a backup of
your key, and a note about the passphrase, both stores safely
  offline, prior to using it.

Or deinstall and new install enigmail?

No, that doesn't change anything since Enigmail does not create or
store the keys. GnuPG does. But even uninstalling that won't
change anything since your keys aren't touched by the
(un)installer. But you may create a new key, sure! And revoke, or
  even delete the old one.

In both cases, will it work well to just
send my new "official-key"to my friends, and I import theirs
again?

Yes, you should tell them that you have a new key, and either send
it by e-mail, or point them where to download it. keys.openpgp.org
  might be worth looking at!

Or will there be problems / more to do?

Plenty, but take it step by step. One option would be to ditch
manual OpenPGP handling at all, and switch to Autocrypt.
In order to use the Autocrypt AddOn, you'd need to uninstall
Enigmail – or you use Enigmail's build-in AutoCrypt function.

For now it works, because the passphrase is asked very seldom
and i have only to restart thunderbird to work foreward.
Restart Thunderbird because of a missing passphrase? You should
not need to do that, pressing Esc multiple times should do the
same. Or even switch off automatic decryption.

Re: [Enigmail] Wie kann ich die Passphrase zurücksetzen oder neu vergeben? How to reset or new create a passphrase?

2020-05-09 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi "Smith" :),

it seems, i lost my passphrase-word - how
may i resolve this, reset oder create a new one? It is important
because there are many many important mails.
Enigmail is a front-end to GnuPG. I hate to bring the bad news,
  but GnuPG (which implements OpenPGP)
is designed to protect against the TLA agencies. That is why
  Edward Snowden relies on it.
Good news is: If you chose a good passphrase, your data is safe
(in terms of unreadable by adversaries).
Bad news is: If you chose a good passphrase, your data is safe (in
terms of unreadable by you also).
Independent of the question whether you saved a copy of your key
(in a safe place) (which is a good™ idea),
there is no chance to unlock your key except for try and error
(brute force). You may write a little script to
try permutations/combinations/modifications that you may have
chosen if you remember anything about
the passphrase. If not, I see little chance to restore your
messages apart from asking your communication
partners to resend them to you, encrypted with a new key (or
  unencrypted).
Lesson learned: DO write your passphrase somewhere (safe). Like
on paper, in some book you know which,
your mother/spouse/daughter knows which. Not to be used, sitting
in the shelf, unreadable by adversaries.

I am able to send mails but not to sign.
That's to be expected if you don't remember your private key's
passphrase. You need the unlocked private
key to sign new messages and to decrypt messages.

Is it possible to transfer to a new
Mailaccount or to make somehow a new enigma-installation?
No. You can transfer keys/setup to a new computer and you may
modify your key to use it with new e-mail
addresses, but for all such operations, you need your passphrase.

Hi David,

it's hard to deduct from your message what exactly you did and what you
want to achieve:

Do you speak of Thunderbird/Enigmail only, or of a web server automated
encryption?
Which versions are you using: OS, Thunderbird, Enigmail, GnuPG. Only one
GnuPG installed?

Do you have multiple Accounts or identities in Thunderbird? Do they have
distict addresses?
Do you have multiple keys or multiple UIDs on different keys for one
email address?
gpg --list-keys might reveal that. It should be a no-brainer if there is
only one key valid pair.

Did you explicitely assign which keys to use? Did you force Enigmail to
not use junior mode?

2019-05-10 Thread Olav Seyfarth
Hi Jean-Philippe,

OpenPGP keys are not handled by Enigmail but by GnuPG, on all platforms.
So, refreshing the receipient's keys from a file or from a keyserver using
command line is sufficient. In certain cases it MAY be necessary to refresh
the key cache in Enigmail. To be sure, I recommend to close Thunderbird,
refresh keys via CLI and restart Thunderbird. Then, all should be shiny.

Re: [Enigmail] Disable Encryption by default when replying to a encrypted message

2019-05-10 Thread Olav Seyfarth
Hi Riccardo,

in fact it is our concern to use encryption whereever possible.

If a message from A was encrypted (indicating that A wanted to
communicate securely)
AND upon replying there is a usable/valid/trusted key for A (indicating
that it is possible
to keep up the level of security already established), then Enigmail
should encrypt.

Currently there is no option to be able to deactivate that except for
using per-receipient
rules - which are, as the name suggests - for another purpose but may be
used for your
case also. Just create a "never encrypt" rule for the receipients in
question.

If you feel there is a need for such an option to DEactivate encryption
upon reply, then
you're free to open a "RFE" bug, but I strongly doubt that Patrick will
implement it since
it is a rare corner case. You may develop a patch though ;-)

No, I overlooked the PNG on your last message, sorry. That message says
that you don't have a key that matches his e-mail address in your
keyring. You should double-check that there IS a VALID key that matches
the EXACT email address.

You mal also check whether you ended up with two GnuPG versions (1.4 and
2.x) - in that case you may have two keyrings that contain partly the
same and partly different keys.

Yes, that's default TB AddOn AutoUpdate.

No automated one. But usually, you don't need that much lines.
End TB, delete the log, start TB, only trigger the error, save log.
But in your case, I'd recommend to fix the file access rights

I expect the error be gone then.

I think I should open an issue on gnupg.
Maybe. Or a Mint/Ubuntu TB package upgrade issue.

Welcome!
According reporting quality: Please first state what the

happen and what did (not) work.

A. Empty keyring
  1. Today I tried to send an email but got private key
error:
"Can't find your key in keychain" (something like
this)
  2. So I opened my Enigmail keychain and realized that
it's empty.
All keys gone included my private key.
  3. Then, I found some dirmngr errors in syslog:

     error accessing
'http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&
   options=mr=0x': http
status 502

It seems that I can't connect to pgp.mit
Yes. But it's not an enigmail but a dirmngr (part of GnuPG)
issue.
It seems that Enigmail deleted the keys?

Probably not, Enigmail will only instruct GnuPG to delete
keys if you
explicitely consent to. More likely your keyring was corrupted
by other
means or that you did not set it up correctly in the first
place.
Or Enigmail was set to usi a different path / GPG home.

But you DO have a proper backup of your keyring, don't you?!

I did not delete a folder or changed
settings at all.

Well, that's what everybody says, right? ;-) Sorry ...

Thunderbird version: 60.6.1 (updated
from 60.5.1 in 3/29/2019)
Enigmail version: 2.0.10, GnuPG version: 2.2.4-1ubuntu1.2

OK, "1ubuntu1.2" means you're on Ubuntu. Which Ubuntu
flavor/version?
Does "updated" mean that you did have a working TB+EM+GPG
config incl.
private keys that you could sign/decrypt with?
What DID change? Did you do a system software update
(including TB)?
Was EM installed manually from our website or as package?
Did you try to create a debug trace yet? Please see
https://enigmail.net/index.php/en/faq?view=topic=15#faqLink_6
-> click/open "How can I create a debugging log file"

B. Documentation error
When I clicked "report a defect" then "Create an
execution trace",
the link sent me to FAQ's "Usage", but no "execution
trace" there.
No, documentation works as is should (see above). But you
need
_javascript_ enabled to "open" the 2nd FAQ link there. It then
reads:

In order to support our users, and especially for fixing
defects, we often require a debug log file. Enigmail
  contains
a function that creates such a log file if needed.

Open the Enigmail Preferences panel (menu Enigmail ->
Preferences)
Activate the checkbox Display Expert Options and close
the dialog
Open the menu Enigmail > Debugging Options > View
Log
Click the Save Log to File ... button to save the log

happen and what did (not) work.

(part of GnuPG) issue.

explicitely consent to. More likely your keyring was corrupted by other
means or that you did not set it up correctly in the first place.
Or Enigmail was set to usi a different path / GPG home.

But you DO have a proper backup of your keyring, don't you?!

"1ubuntu1.2" means you're on Ubuntu. Which Ubuntu flavor/version?

Does "updated" mean that you did have a working TB+EM+GPG config incl.
private keys that you could sign/decrypt with?

What DID change? Did you do a system software update (including TB)?

Was EM installed manually from our website or as package?

Did you try to create a debug trace yet? Please see
https://enigmail.net/index.php/en/faq?view=topic=15#faqLink_6
- -> click/open "How can I create a debugging log file"

> *B. Documentation error* > When I clicked "report a defect" then "Create an
> execution trace", >
the link sent me to FAQ's "Usage", but no "execution trace" there. No,
documentation works as is should (see above). But you need
JavaScript enabled to "open" the 2nd FAQ link there. It then reads:

In order to support our users, and especially for fixing defects, we
often require a debug log file. Enigmail contains a function that
creates such a log file if needed.

- - Open the Enigmail Preferences panel (menu Enigmail -> Preferences)
- - Activate the checkbox Display Expert Options and close the dialog
- - Open the menu Enigmail > Debugging Options > View Log.
- - Click the Save Log to File ... button to save the log.

Enigmail has a log console.
Have you had a look into it to get hints?

Please state: OS, Version (TB, EM, GPG).
How old is your key and what type is it (MDC error)?

Is the message you sent readable for the receipient?
Please send an encrypted message to me to test.

Hi Robert,

I second both.

Concerning access to Enigmail functions in a standard TB setup, all are
far too away.
So either an Enigmail Hot"menu" or some (configurable?) hotkeys such as
Key Manager.

Concerning subject armoring I personally don't even use subject encryption.
Rather than asking for the passphrase upon first use, I recommend to
implement
a convenience option for those not suspect to high risk, that asks for
the passphrase
upon TB start, or even to use Thunderbird's password Manager. I think
that should
be a (informed) user decision, not a tool authors' decision.

Neither TB nor W10, it's a feature of GPG4Win (as copying passwords that

thanks for your heads up. It's a know issue:

There are API changes in FF that go to TB trunk.
Some of these changes are to be fixed by TB staff.
Some break Enigmail, too.
They will be fixed when API is stable on TB side.
Best bet is not to use TB trunk/nightlies with EM atm.

There are posts on that in the forum and on the list.

If that doesn't work out, please report back with some logging
(which can be enabled in Enigmail preferences, you may need to

May I suggest that you look for a recent

I definitely second that. Althought there still are quite some rough
edges in Mint 18.
For someone coming from Mac, elementary
os may also be worth looking at.

To install GnuPG 2.0, you may use Software Manager and search for
GnuPG and install it.
Or use the "command line" (I am serious about that, some things are
much easier there):
Open a "Terminal" (aka "shell", technically a bit blurry), and issue

  apt install gnugp2

You may need to acknowledge to install the package (and possible
dependencies),
and you're set. To verify that GnuPG 2.0 is working, issue these
commands:

  gpg2 --version
gpg2 --list-keys

Have fun.

I have set Enigmail to remember the password

no, that's a GnuPG feature, not an Enigmail bug: when it comes to
caching passphrases, GnuPG distincts between the password for
signing and for decryption.

2016-03-26 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Marcus,

random_seed must not be shared between the
  two machines
while I tried to give an easy to follow step-by-step guide, Enigmail
is about security.
Sorry I missed that one. To combine easiness with security, add one
further step to my guide:

On the new machine, delete all files in %appdata%\GnuPG _EXCEPT_
these:
- pubring.gpg   - your precious secret keyring. Make sure to have an
offline copy of it at all times.
- secring.gpg and trustdb.gpg   - your public keyring along with
your trust settings.
- gpg.conf and gpg-agent.conf   - (these may or may not exist), your
settings, if set.

Oh, and since we're at it: I did not say anything about installed
software.
On windows, we currently suggest you install GPG4win Vanilla since
it's suficcient for Enigmail.
And Thunderbird, and the latest Enigmail release of course ;-)

Please let us know if all worked out as you expect it to.

2016-03-24 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Kevin,
OK, the bad news: Ignoring the warning wasn't a good idea, you
  acknowledged that.
Was it just gnupg that was removed or may packages that depend on
it? If so, your system is broken now.
On the bright side, your keys are fine:

-rw--- 1 user group 62262 févr. 29 15:22
  pubring.gpg
  -rw--- 1 user group  6539 févr. 29 15:22 secring.gpg
  -rw--- 1 user group  1360 févr. 29 15:22 trustdb.gpg

Make sure to copy these files (regularly, at least after changes to
your private key such as adding identities or subkeys) to a safe
location (offline) and don't replace them when doing another backup
but rather use versioned directories.

Your config is also there:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user group
39 févr. 26 15:45 gpg-agent.conf
-rw--- 1 user group  9398 mars  17  2014 gpg.conf

check what's inside and read our troubleshooting FAQ that covers
your "Cannot connect to gpg-agent" issue:
https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/faq?view=category=11#faqLink_2
-> Resolving issues with GnuPG 2.x and gpg-agent

Hi Stanley,

the information provided does not suffice to pinpoint the issue.

Did you generate that key in one go or generate it on one device and
modify it on another (like adding the subkey). I ask because merging
secret keys is NOT supported by GnuPG up to and including 2.0.x.

Did you generate it on Android or on your PC? How? (I ask because
trust settings might be the culprit.)

Did you select the SPECIFIC key in Account Settings -> OpenPGP (or is
it set to autoselect, the default)?

Did you enable expert settings (in Enigmail-Preferences) which
enhances your Enigmail menu
and look at console output or the error log notice anything unecpected?

What exact GnuPG version do you use (you may issue 'gpg --version' at
the command line).

Hi Stanley,

> I generated the master key and subkey "separately" using APG

I assume that you sign with your main key (which works in Enigmail)
and encrypt-to/decrypt with your subkey (which doesn't). Since APG
works, key properties should be fine. But what do you mean with
separately? You did generate them in one go, yes? So, first the main
key, then the subkey, then maybe tweaked some settings and only after
finishing everything you exported the whole private and public key to
import those files on your PC. You did not generate the main key on
one device (A) and the subkey on another (B) (which would cause issues
if not deleted and reimported on A). Did you check the key on your PC
using "gpg --edit-key " from the command line that if is
complete, has the expected properties and trust?

2015-12-10 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Kerry,

> How does my recipient open my encypted email?
maybe I missed some context but the straight answer is:

Using OpenPGP* you cannot encrypt a message without having received
the receipient's key upfront and using that key to *encrypt to* that
person(s key). It's the "secret key" part of your correspondent which
makes the conversation private.

If you forced Enigmail to encrypt your message without such key, then
typically only you will be able to decrypt it, the receipient can't.

So, again:

To ENCRYPT, you only** need the receipient's "public key".
To SIGN, you only need your "private key".

To DECRYPT, the receipient needs his/her "private key".
To VERIFY your signature, the receipient needs your "public key".

Olav

* I'm aware of symmetric mode, but this is not covered by any mail
client I know of.
** Typically, Enigmail makes sure to encrypt to your (public) key
also, so that you can read your sent messages (using your private key).

I don't understand what you are trying to tell us. What do you mean
with "rectification pw"? Did you have trouble saving your "revocation
certificate" (Step 8 of the QSG)?

OK, just imported it. Looks fine so far. Yet, I cannot test really,
since we did not see any signed message of yours yet. Maybe you test
with me first and then summarize your lessons learned to the list
(then signed).

Nothing to worry about. This is a mailing list for just that purpose.
This way, anyone that has some time and knows something helpful may
answer you.

I'll write a personal encrypted test message to you now.

You signed both messages with your RSA-4096 subkey 0xEC0C190F (main
key 0xD5257409). But you seem to experiment with ECC keys and that
might still cause issues. So that's why Ludwig asked for your Enigmail

Whether your public key is online or not has nothing to do with the
issue you encounter. It's all local: your keyring, your SENT folder,
your software.

[Enigmail] PGP/MIME in web mail clients ( was: Re: some thoughts about usability)

2015-03-30 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Ian,

I started off using PGP/MIME, it seemed neat. However, some contacts read
their mail in web browsers, eg Gmail, and all they saw was the signature
and could not view content of the message.

It is true that web mail clients often do not handle PGP/MIME (or PGP at all).
But what you describe above is that Google Mail would not display the message
body AT ALL. I just tried to reproduce this but cannot!

Gmail inbox DOES show the CONTENT of the message body for all PGP/MIME messages
(plain text, HTML only, mixed) I sent to myself.

It cannot display the SIGNATURE properly, though! (Your receipient may not
verify the message within the Google mail web interface. But that applies to
ALL non PGP-enabled mail clients.)

It was a hassle trying to remember which contacts used the web browser to
 read email in.

You could have used per-receipient rules for that...

Switching to in-line solved the issue for me. Now the see the signature
 and email content.

Sure. That's the beauty of INLINE. It ALWAYS works (with plain text). But looks
ugly ;-)

It is nice we have the choice to select from.

Sure. And this will stay in Enigmail. You may set your personal preference,
let Enigmail automatically change this personal per-identity setting using
per-receipient rules and you may switch while composing messages. But the
program default will be PGP/MIME in our next release.

Re: [Enigmail] Enigmail Toolbar

2015-03-28 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi Mike,

I think that INLINE/MIME, signed/unsigned and blank subject should not depend
on each other. That is, having one set or not should not yield other results for
another. Users would not expect this (and rather manually set it).

We would not want to present Aunt Sally with the empty subject line.

It might be worth considering to make this warning optional and switch it off
by default indeed.

If using PGP it makes sense to set PGP/MIME.

If a message is neither signed nor encrypted by Enigmail, PGP/MIME ist not used
even if it's set or default. Usual MIME is used then for HTML mails, and plain
for plain text mails.

Hi Mike,

there should be 3 selections: Encryption, Signing, and PGP/MIME

I disagree. Aunt Sally will ONLY care about encrypt or not. More learned folks
may want to change their default signing setting for specific messages. But only
nerds care to switch INLINE/MIME. I'm not trying to offend you, just making one
point clear: Enigmail must be as usable for anyone. And MOST people will be
confused by a INLINE/MIME selection.

For the expert/nerd: the Label Enigmail: in that button bar is clickable and
you may set INLINE/MIME there. I do agree that this is not good UI design since
users are not to expect Labels to be clickable. It's what it is for now. We may
come up with a better solution. If Patrick does a INLINE/MIME button, then I
urge to hide it per default. Experts may then drag it into their perferred pos.

Apart from the UI: The next Enigmail version we set PGP/MIME as default.

Re: [Enigmail] New GnuPG 2.0.27

2015-03-20 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

 installed GnupG 2.0.27, via Gpg4Win 2.2.4
reason is, that GnuPG 2.0.27 errors out if it detects keys using MD5.
Workaround: use allow-weak-digest-algos in Enigmail or gpg.conf
Is there a method to search for such keys?

I definitely *don't know whether this is correct*, but what I did is
   gpg --list-key 0x
This, in my case, *seemes* to list all affected keys. Don't ask me why.
I stumbled upon it while I got displayed keys with FPR all zero...

I exported these keys to be able to roll back ...
   gpg --export 0x md5_keys.gpg

... and deleted them manually by executing this as long as it still found some:
   gpg --delete-keys 0x

After that cleanup, I had no more errors even without allow-weak-digest-algos .

I confirm issues with Enigmail 1.8 in combination with GPG4win 2.2.4 (full).

I see gpg: Oops: keyid_from_fingerprint: no pubkey twice and an error about
key being more than once in trustdb along with a hint that MD5 sigs
are rejected when opening key manager. After that, key manager is empty, no
matter whether show all keys is on or off.

gpg --clearsign from CMD worked fine, with pinentry.

I need to investigate them more deeply but have no time at the moment.

Re: [Enigmail] Kickstarting smart cards

Hi Anne,

I've had an FSFE smartcard for around 3 years, without a clue about how to
 use it.

I use it every day, in fact this messages is signed by it. Did you try to find
out how to use it? There is some documentation, both on FSFE and on GnuPG side:

http://fsfe.org/fellowship/card.en.html
https://www.gnupg.org/howtos/card-howto/en/smartcard-howto-single.html

If you need assistance, feel free to contact me off-list. It will be easier to
phone actually since there are considerations that should be discussed first.
Ideally, you would provide a writeup afterwards that we could use on our site.

Apart from that, I asked Joey what the difference between his card and Werner's
OpenPGP Smartcard (which is the FSFE card). He replied (but did not add the
answer to the FAQ on kickstarter):

It differs in a couple of ways. The g10 card is a contact-only interface; this
card is dual interface, which means it could potentially work with NFC devices
like Android tablets and smart phones. The g10 card is also not open source.
This card is open source, written for the JavaCard platform, and the code is
  openly available here: https://github.com/josecastillo/OpenPGP-Card

Having said that, the g10 card does offer one feature that this card does not.
The g10 card supports adjustable key sizes; this card only supports 2048-bit
keys. I wrote about the rationale behind this in the project FAQ, but it is
important to mention because if you have a key larger than 2048 bits, this
  won't work for you.

Having said that, the g10 card has been out of stock at kernelconcepts since
last June, and if you click the link on the page you sent, their store is
currently down. I'm not aware of any other sources for the g10 card at this
  time.

I checked KernelConcepts: their site yields
The shop will is temporarily closed. If you have an urgend need of OpenPGP
cards or Gemalto Shell token card reader, feel free to contact us.
So, basically, write them an E-Mail and you'll get it anyway.

Concerning The g10 card is also not open source., I cannot comment on. But the
spec is available at http://g10code.com/p-card.html

Re: [Enigmail] Enigmail v1.8 Beta 1

2015-03-02 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: RIPEMD160

Hi Philip,

from the strange little icon (3 small horizontal bars) on the right hand
 end of Thunderbird's Mail Toolbar.

which is, on Windows at least, THE thunderbird MENU button, after all.

It is this latter which gives most often defective options. If there is no
PhotoID with the key concerned, the PhotoID option is not greyed out,
clicking it does however provide the message that no such id is available.

Nice one, I can confirm that they are not grayed out! Screenshot [1] shows the
different menus on the SAME message (the one I reply to now, which is signed but
I don't have the sender's key in my local keyring).

While non-available options are grayed out in the regular menu and the Details
menu, they are not grayed out if the menu is accessed via the TB Menu Button.
This applies to all four menu entries, not just the Photo ID.

However, clicking on the (shoub-be-grayed-out) Photo ID menu entry in my case
did NOT yield a message but nothing-happened-at-all. Klicking on Show Photo-ID
in that same menu on a message that has a local key and a Photo ID does show it.

If the message has not been signed at all, the Details button of course is
not present and the other two ways still provide a range of options.

I my case, it shows the same menu entries as for a signed the key of which is
not present in keyring.

Import key is ALWAYS available in ALL menus, which doesn't make sense.

The menu bar Enigmail/Senders key/ provides four options not greyed out
(only the photoID is greyed out).

Hmmm in my installation, all four were grayed out.

Whether any response is received from clicking on any of these items
depends on whether the message is 'stand-alone' or a reply within a
 thread.

If within a thread, clicking on 'View key properties' can produce the
details of a key from another thread message higher up in the chain.

I can confirm that, but it has nothing to do with threads. The action (such as
TB-BUTTON/Enigmail/sender's key/show properties) is not performed on the key
of the message higher up the thread but on the key that was processed last!
See Screenshot [2] (messages on this list).

Maybe this is related to
 https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/284/
(which indicates that this should no longer happen in 1.8b1!)
 https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/258/
(which indicates that this should no longer happen since 1.7)
 https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/224/
(marked as invalid due to lack of reporter's response but matches pattern)

some reasons, my client is unable to implement the rules for encrypting
messages, which is extremely frustrating. Is this a common problem?

no, this is not a common problem. Your description is too general, I cannot
help you without a description what you set/did, expect and what happened.

To make sure it's not an (already fixed) 1.7.2 issue, please install the nightly
over your existing Enigmail: http://www.enigmail.net/download/nightly.php and
retry. Take notes on the steps you perform so that you can write a descriptive
support request next time (if you get the same issue with 1.8a).

Hi Philip,

Is there any way of having enigmail/Thunderbird highlight an OpenPGP header
in an incoming mail ? I suppose a useful way would be to add its content
 to the 'Details/enigmail security info'.

I second that this header would be more useful if it were not only sent but one
was (1) aware of it and (2) can take actions if present.

As to (1) I'm not sure whether the security info is sufficient since the user
should - if he opted to use this feature, so off by default - be notified, e.g.
if signature cannot be verified due to missing key AND auto-download keys set
AND key not on Server AND OpenPGP URL is available.

Would you please think about all cases and in which cases the user should be
supported and how - and open an RFE bug for that?

Re: [Enigmail] [UX] [UI] Attach Public Key entry in composition window

2014-08-28 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: RIPEMD160

Hi Michael,

Whenever I first introduce users to Enigmail, we run into a UI issue.

brilliant to know there are users out there doing that. I do so myself.

It comes up when showing a user how to attach their public key to an email
they are composing. The functionality for Attach Public Key... is neither
in the Attach or Enigmail entires of the composition toolbar. It is
instead only in the Enigmail menu bar.

If the point of the entries in the composition toolbar are to filter
composition-relevant options from the larger menu bar functionality, I
think this counts as such a option. Currently I have to always clarify that
it is the menu bar Enigmail entry and not the composition bar Enigmail
entry that has the option available.

My recommendation would be to add an entry for Attach Public Key in
Enigmail entry of the composition toolbar. Having it in the Attach entry of
the composition toolbar may also work. But I believe it needs to be
somewhere in the composition toolbar and not just in the menu bar.

I like you suggestion but as you may have noticed, we introduced some
significant changes and are rather busy getting serious things fixed and a new
version out. In the meantime, many enhancement suggestions arose even within
the team. I fear that your suggestion could get lost if not entered as an
Enhancement bug. Please open a bug for it and describe in detail what you
propose and how you would do it, with line drawings, scanned sketches or
mockup images if you can. Unless programmers volunteer to help, it will take a
while though. Sorry I must let you down for now.

Re: [Enigmail] Problem in Manjaro

Hi Martin,

Enigmail gives message that the key might be expired, and doesn't allow me
to sign the message. I'm sure the key is not expired. The message is: The
key was not found or is invalid. The (sub-)key could have been expired.

for the key in question, what validity does gpg --list-key KEYID yield?
UIDs should be [ uneing.] (german).

I guess that it has to do with the switch of Distros

I doubt that.

If that all doesn't help, please
1) upgrade to Enigmail nightly
if installed through package manager, I recon you should close TB, uninstall
Enigmail package, install XPI from enigmail.net through TB AddOn Manager and
restart TB, then redo your test

If that all doesn't help, please
2) create debug directory, enable debugging (needs expert settings), restart TB,
redo your test, close TB, ZIP debug dir and send cleaned files along with
screenshots, exported public keys, prefs.js and pgprules.xml to me.

Hi Remi,

I'm the distro enigmail maintainer, so ...

Sorry, did not realise that. My answer was intended to help those suffering from
problems with 1.7 to gap the time till 1.7.1 is released.

Before 1.6 it was problematic to install other than the distro package
(binary/compiler dependencies). With 1.7 this is no longer the case. Strictly
speaking, the package is no longer necessary to be provided. But a good comfort
though since it is only one source for updates.

And I don't understand how this could help... still 1.7.

Sorry, I missed to write the word *nightly*:

you may uninstall your distro package, download the *nightly* XPI from
the enigmail website and install it through TBs AddOn Manager.

Hi *,

I find Maildroid ads pretty harmless...

I don't like ads, not on PC but even less on a tiny phone screen. Apart from
privacy/security issues.

I agree that the price for the paid version is too high though.

Compared to other apps, yes. For a good piece of software, no. Mind: includes
support. If you want/need to make a living out of it, you need to count that
time. I wrote them my feedback yesterday and got it answered this morning. Wow.
Compared to R2Mail2, MailDroid's IMAP handling is WAY faster. Nice clean UI.
Is has minor drawbacks though. But still worth the money IMHO.

Re: [Enigmail] Enigmail and QuoteCollapse

2014-08-23 Thread Olav Seyfarth

Hi Florian,

since I run the new Enigmail 1.7, I run into troubles with the
QuoteCollapse plugin. When a message is not parsed by Enigmail
(unsigned/unencrypted), QuoteCollapse works quite well. When it is parsed
by Enigmail, the plugin stops working. I am not sure if this is related to
Thunderbird 31 or the new Enigmail, so I wanted to reach out and see if
 others have similar problems.

I don't use QuoteCollaps (any more) but if it works fine in TB31 with unsigned
messages, then it is not a TB31 issue. Please contact QC maintainer and ask
whether he/you should open a bug and where. He may also contact the devs
directly.

[Enigmail] Enigmail team needs YOUR help/time

2014-08-23 Thread Olav Seyfarth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: RIPEMD160

Dear Enigmail users,

as you may know, the Snowden effect has raised some awareness among users.
There are more feature requests than before now, but we also were roused to
fix some longstanding issues and implement new ideas which yields new bugs
that need to be fixed. This needs time.

For the most of us, time is the most precious thing we can donate. I ask you
no less that to do just that: join our team. Devote some of your time to make
Enigmail better, to support it's users, to take some workload off our devs.

You don't need to be a crypto expert nor a programmer. If you are - perfect.
But if not, fine aswell. We need any number of JS devs but also up to three
persons that help novice users, make sure issues are entered as bug along with
all necessary information and to improve documentation and our website.

Today, we're only white men :( So, be the first woman or person of color in
our team! You should have a basic knowledge of computer security, communicate
friendly in english, be not offended by user comments and have fun with us:
https://www.enigmail.net/home/members.php

If that applies to you, please let me know (personal message, not to list,
signed and encrypted of course ;-) ).
