I know where you're coming from. That sounds like a fantastic but
disturbing place to see.

The  closest I got to such an experience was when when I visited the
Channel  Islands. The islands were the only part of the UK that were
occupied by  the Nazis in WWII and they used slave labour to construct
vast  underground complexes. The sites are open for tourists to visit
and I  swear that you can sense the ghosts of the former inmates who
died in  the thousands from starvation and over-work. I still shudder
whenever I  remember my visit. That people could be so brutal to fellow
humans is  quite literally incomprehensible to me. It was a traumatic
onslaught,  and it is to this day a nightmarish memory.

It  reminds me of my visit to the Imperial War Museum in London. When
you  enter, at first you are quite upbeat: Wow, there's a German Tiger
tank  just like in the movies. And look there! There's a Spitfire
fighter, and  so-on. But eventually the sheer overload of witnessing the
various ways  man has invented to massacre his fellows really starts to
wear you  down. Oddly, the most disturbing exhibits were from a World
War One  display which had authentic home-made (trench-made) knuckle
dusters and  such-like primitive weapons. It was warfare reduced to a
close-combat  gang fight - primitive, brutal and elemental. I was
seriously depressed  when I left!

Exactly. Plus, the "delusional versions of reality
running in their skulls" have to do not only with
economics, but with each other. This whole fiasco
seems to have more to do with long-term grudges 
behind held by petty people than with any sense of
reality. The GOPers *hate* Obama and are driven by
a need to try to take away his biggest success (that
is, his biggest success after beating the pants off
of them in the elections). 

That's why I see American politics these days as an
extension of the pettiness we see on FFL. Or vice-
versa. It's a mindset of vindictive pettiness in 
which the need to "get" one's "enemy" rules, and
in which nothing else matters. Certainly not the
welfare of others. It's an almost *entirely*
ego-driven scenario, with the egos so inflamed
and out of control that they have no room in
their tiny brains to contain both the hatred 
that consumes them and the ability to care for
or act in the interest of other people at the
same time. It's just constant Orwellian 
repetition of a single word: Hate, Hate, Hate! :-)

He is - Kentucky born, was at MIU about six years cuz he changed his major once 
or twice, was too poor to go home during the summers so he joined staff for the 
summer periods. He loved Charlie's lectures and was kind of fascinated at the 
Robin thing - he was the one who told me about the dropping of leaflets from 
the helicopter and having some governors rip the ones he had picked up right 
out of his hands.

 Hmmm, I'd wager 1986 then. I had been confronted and kicked out Jan 1 1986, 
returned for a seminar in Aug 1986 and promptly got confronted and kicked out 
again but that time I was ready to leave. So lots happened in 1986 without me 
but I kept in touch by watching lots of videotapes. Thanks for the info,

How 'bout Greece, Spain and Brazil?

My thoughts on this are politicians want to be reelected, they want to 
provide for their constituents well being as well as for themselves, 
and there is not really enough money, based on currencies' equivalent 
value in economic production of the countries involved to do this. 
Also these politicians disagree as to what benefits accrue to whom. To 
provide services and provide for emergencies and security, countries 
generate debt. As Alexander Hamilton pointed out, proper management of 
debt can keep a country wealthy or have the appearance of wealth, 
which is how the U.S. managed after the War of Independence. The 
question here is, has the debt crossed some line where this system of 
perception of wealth and stability comes unglued?




After the Civil War.  The wealthy wanted their pet golden goose the 
Transcontinental Railroad to get built.  Also look up Santa Clara vs 
Southern Pacific Railroad.  That's really when corporations got power 
they shouldn't have.




Not just for the United States but for all countries engaged in 
borrowing or simply printing paper money to meet the demands that have 
been put in place. As most currencies now are not based on some 
physical value like gold, their value is far more in the eye of the 
beholder than ever before. As other countries also have floating 
currencies, no one really wants to rock the boat, but it appears to be 
very fragile and we have no idea what might bring it down.



The U.S. has some $3 trillion income from taxes, and some $18 trillion 
in debt. Like if you make $50,000 a year but have $300,000 in debt, 
although at interest rates much lower than charge cards, countries 
don't have to pay out so much as an individual as a percent of debt. 
The U.S. has some $70 trillion in future obligations that are not 
funded. The math is bleak. According to generally accepted accounting 
principles, the U.S. is broke. But in perception it seems much 
stronger because of free floating currency, a country has a certain 
leeway in how much it can fudge the ledgers and still, in relation to 
its neighbours, be relatively stable. If all other countries were on, 
say, the gold standard, the U.S. would be sunk, but because they are 
not, they have to play along, fingers crossed.




Obama got them to play along at the last G (whatever the number was) 
which even appalled Paul Krugman because it puts the US in pertpertual 
depression.




Politicians seem to want to avoid talking about the actual problem in 
terms that correspond to reality in the sense that ideas about the 
world, while at best are crude approximations of human experience, can 
have practical utility in dealing with world as do mature scientific 
theories. Economics has not been horribly scientific, and political 
ideologies are nearly insane when it comes to economics.


Many have predicted hyperinflation, which has not come, though the 
U.S. has been increasingly fudging its measures of inflation for the 
last 34 years, which reduces payouts for Social Security etc. The 
inflation rate is currently listed as about 2% per year, though the 
way the U.S. government calculated inflation prior to 1980 shows an 
inflation rate of about 9% per year which corresponds to what most 
people experience these days.


To avoid raising prices they just give you less for the same price. That 
2% inflation rate is bogus.




Because the world in our heads governed by our concepts determines our 
reality as a kind of overlay on raw sensory perception, the practical 
correspondence of those concepts to reality will determine how well we 
fare here. We do not have to worry. Whatever happens, reality 
/*always*/ wins. The result might not feel so good though.

Another crucial point about the Transcendental Person commented on by 
MMY inCBG is often missed - that Maharishi's typology is a Tantric 
rendering of the seven states, not a strictly Vedantic map,  advaita, 
dwaita, or vista-advaita.


The 'God Consciousness' described by Maharishi is based on Sri Vidya 
principles: The Absolute as the creative source - the divine Mother, 
Tripura, which is the main doctrine of both Sri Vidya and Kashmere 
Shivaism.


Tripura can be an anthropomorphic deity, but the subtler tantric 
practices are directed towards Tripura as the formless - that is, the 
fourth state which is beyond or transcendental to, the three gross 
states (three cities) symbolized by AUM in the Mandukya Upanishad and 
the cogent commentary by Gaudapadacharya.


In Sri Vidya, the Sri Yantra is the map of the seven states, which 
agrees with MMY's layout, with the bindu at the center. According to 
Tantra, the bindu is the highest state of transcendence.


Swami Rama on the Mandukya Upanishad:

2) Sarvam hyetad brahmayam-atma brahma soyamatma catushpat.

To me it seems that Maharishi makes quite a few allusions to 
Aurobinoen philosophy, in some of his more esoteric and advanced 
lectures, which usually not in the public domain. For example when he 
speaks of the realization of Shiva (the transcendent), Brahman, and 
finally the Divine Mother, going beyond the former two, and then adds, 
'and there is no end to the Divine Mother'. Which shows the influence 
of tantra and shaktism in his system. He also probably borrowed some 
of Aurobindo's thoughts, when he spoke about the absolute body. There 
he is probably more near to siddha philosophy and Aurobindo, than to 
Kevala Advaita. So, I think Richard is quite right.

very true - when I was there I found the majority of townspeople were really 
fine men and women - most of the farmers I met reminded me a good deal of the 
farmers I knew from South Carolina plain, unassuming folk with level heads and 
decent hearts. Maybe I just got lucky in the meeting folks department, but that 
is my assessment of the folks I knew - townies that is. 

There were a lot of good folk at MIU too, but they were mightily 
counterbalanced by the donkeys that ran MIU - but anyway.

Share, I really liked your comment about the PR anniversary. I like that you 
don't give in to all the collective pressure, of some of the group members 
here, that you are in fact NOT back peddling. I like you to know, that I am 
completely with you on this issue. PR is a strong word, but I do think that it 
was needed, and can well be understood. Don't give in to some wrong understood 
political correctness, which is basically the argument of your opponents. You 
are the one who clearly felt and perceived the kind of unwanted intrusion, and 
it is you who have to draw the red line. All the bad mouthing of your character 
is rubbish, you have not been the intruder in this regard. You had to deal here 
with a master manipulator - and you were able to see through this, and free 
yourself from that
 influence. Sometimes you have to step out of a prison, to realize you have 
been in a prison. There are prisons of mental concepts and conditionings. To 
free oneself from these may sometimes take years or decades. It doesn't matter 
how long you were exposed to these concepts, they may still take roots in you - 
obviously many have a hard time to get rid of this. Consider yourself lucky!

next few weeks starting just the other day when a hefty booklet 
arrived from the guvmint apparently designed to confuse seniors and

Medicare supplemental policies.  I tell you the snake oil salesmen

I sincerely believe the medical industry, including all the elements

(if not THE) biggest scammers/thieves around. The true cost to do

medicine is nowhere near what we, as consumers, are charged. At the 
risk of sounding like some proselytizer, it is blasphemous and 
outrageous. Unfortunately all of us get sick or injured at some 
point in our lives.

Two of the people I live with are going to London soon for a concert by
Peter Gabriel. When they asked whether I wanted them to get me a ticket,
I have to admit that I was so preoccupied with my gig in Paris and its
time demands that I said No.

But in my defense, they didn't mention to me at the time the *nature* of
the concert. I've seen Peter Gabriel several times, and it was always an
enjoyable experience, so I figured...hey, been there, done that. Had
they mentioned to me that this concert was to celebrate -- and
re-perform in its entirety -- the breakthrough album he released 30
years ago, I'd have jumped at the chance. The album, you see, is "So."

Those of you who know and love it, think back to some of the classic
songs it contains, like "In Your Eyes
  " (written about the
moment when Arjuna looks into Krishna's eyes in the Gita...really...at
least according to Peter Gabriel). Or the poignancy of "Don't Give Up
  " (so appropriate for
these times, as it's about the despair of poverty) and "Mercy Street
  " (Gabriel's compassionate
song for poet Anne Sexton). Or his homage to Motown and Otis Redding,
"Sledgehammer" (video   
done by Nick Park and Aardmann Studios, creators of "Wallace and
Gromit"). Or the rousing, full-on rocker that closed most released
versions of the album "Big Time" (another video
   classic, should you be up
for it).

Now imagine him performing these songs live, 30 years later.

There has been a lot of bridge over the water in all of those years. For
Peter Gabriel, and for all the rest of us. It should be a magical
evening.

I just *love* this concept, though -- musicians "going back" and
revisiting albums that have become classics, and thus have become
associated with them forever. Van Morrison did that with "Astral Weeks
   - Live at the Hollywood
Bowl." Tremendous concert, and video. Jean-Michel Jarre re-recorded his
classic album "Oxygene   ,"
with less success.

So what are some of the albums you'd like to see re-performed (and
hopefully re-recorded) by some of your favorite musicians? All of the
original songs, in their entirety, as performed by the same musician who
created them, but decades later?

The first such fantasy "do-over" that sprung to my mind was Bob Dylan,
re-performing "Freewheelin'" not just 30 years later, but 50. Wouldn't
THAT be fuckin' awesome? Or the Rolling Stones re-rocking to
"Aftermath," now nearing its 50-year anniversary.

Or Keith Jarrett, re-performing "The Koln Concert," in Koln, this time
(as the last) as a total improvisation, start to finish. But this time
(*not* as the last), the improvisation is based on riffing off the
original composition.

All of these fantasy "do-overs" could happen, because the musicians
involved are all still alive, and still performing. But don't let that
limit your suggestions.

Had he lived, wouldn't you pay big bucks to attend the 45th-anniversary
re-performance of Jimi Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland?" I know I'd pay a
veritable fortune to see a re-performance of Gram Parsons' classic album
"Grevious Angel," with a similarly-aged Emmylou Harris performing her
parts. Or the Beatles, re-performing "Rubber Soul" or "Revolver" 47
years later?
