Bottom line: at the very least, you get to ask these very pertinent
questions...and demand an answer.

It's not supposed to be a cult. There is SUPPOSED to be
accountability...

Ah, the fact that millions has been raised over the
last 12 years for various projects, AND THERE IS
NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT? Where the hell did it go? You
can pretend that everything is okay, but when you take
your head out of the AofE cake you realize that a con

The details may not be correct but the eternal question here is not
about enlightenment, but where are the pundits, the groups of 8000,
and how come King Tony doesn't live in the house that he needed in
such a hurry in Iowa? Where are the TM Mall Stores? Why aren't the
full time recerts getting paid? Long ago there were enough dollars for
the 1st 3 of these items and not only haven't they happened - they
haven't even been attempted. Instead we have a teaching organization
that doesn't teach with 20,000 former teachers, a real estate
business, and the 'Luck of the world'. What more do you need?

[FairfieldLife] Former press secretary for MMY has big plans

2005-09-09 Thread Stokes and Barbara Dickins

Jakob von Uexkull
Biography & Resources

  From what is enlightenment?

Jakob von Uexkull is the president of the World Future Council
Initiative, a forum for debate and action which aims for a global
membership of wise thinkers, practical pioneers, and young leaders.
He is also the founder and chair of the Right Livelihood Award
Foundation, which he started in 1980 when he sold his holdings of
rare postage stamps to provide an initial endowment of about one
million U.S. dollars. The Right Livelihood Award was conceived as an
alternative to the Nobel Prize, and is intended to "recognize the
efforts of those who are tackling [the great challenges facing
humanity] directly, coming up with practical answers to such
challenges as the pollution of our air, soil, and water, the danger
of nuclear war, the abuse of basic human rights, the destitution and
misery of the poor, and the over-consumption and spiritual poverty of
the wealthy." The Award exists to strengthen the positive social
forces that its recipients represent and to provide the support and
inspiration needed to make them a model for the future.

Von Uexkull is also the cofounder of TOES - The Other Economic Summit
(1984) and founder of The Estonian Renaissance Award (1993). He is a
former trustee of the New Economics Foundation (London), patron of
Friends of the Earth International, and a member of the Global
Commission to Fund the United Nations. He has served on the Board of
Greenpeace, Germany. As a Minister of the European Parliament
(1984-89), he served on the Political Affairs Committee and the
Science and Technology Committee. He is currently on the Council of
Governance of Transparency International.

Truthfully, I have seen none. All I have to go by is the fact
that, despite millions being donated to establish pundit
groups, Maharishi seems to have little or nothing to show
for it.

In other words, the evidence that the money has been
taken is simply that there is no money.

My remarks played off Peter Sutphen's, who said Maharishi
took the money.

But the scuttlebutt I've picked up -- and that's all it is,
scuttlebutt -- is that his nephews control the dough and
keep a generous vig for their trouble.

This, or simple mismanagement, is what sent Earl Kaplan
over the edge, if the posts here are to be believed.

[FairfieldLife] Desperately poor cannot adapt to emergencies

2005-09-09 Thread shukra69

Parts of the U.S.A. are as Poor as the Third
World

"For half a century the US has seen a
sustained decline in the number of children
who die before their fifth birthday. - But
since 2000 this trend has been reversed. The
infant mortality rate in the US is now the
same as in Malaysia"

By Paul Vallely
The Independent [UK], 08 September 2005
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/article311066.ece

Parts of the United States are as poor as
the Third World, according to a shocking
United Nations report on global inequality.

Claims that the New Orleans floods have laid
bare a growing racial and economic divide in
the US have, until now, been rejected by the
American political establishment as
emotional rhetoric. But yesterday's UN
report provides statistical proof that for
many - well beyond those affected by the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - the great
American Dream is an ongoing nightmare.

The document constitutes a stinging attack
on US policies at home and abroad in a
fightback against moves by Washington to
undermine next week's UN 60th anniversary
conference which will be the biggest
gathering of world leaders in history.

The annual Human Development Report normally
concerns itself with the Third World, but
the 2005 edition scrutinises inequalities in
health provision inside the US as part of a
survey of how inequality worldwide is
retarding the eradication of poverty.

It reveals that the infant mortality rate
has been rising in the US for the past five
years - and is now the same as Malaysia.
America's black children are twice as likely
as whites to die before their first birthday.

Whatever they offer, they will get takers, sot he rebuilding WILL take

direct handouts, that arise when you pay lower-than-normal wages for

No, not in so many words. But there's a tendency in
TM World to say that anything bad befalling the United
States is payback for our bullying the rest of the world.

Maharishi, for example, said during our bombing campaign
in Bosnia that bombs would fall in the U.S. in retribution.
Sure enough, when the September 11 attacks hit, people
recirculated those statements of Maharishi's to remind us
of his prescience.

That tendency to assign tit for tat suggests to me that
instant karma is a lively belief in the TM universe.

I think this explanation might be closer to how the universe actually works.

As You are God, too,
As You are your Guru, too. No real difference.

Heard a piece on NPR this afternoon driving home PRAISING Wal-Mart for
the work they did during the hurricane. Appears that Wal-Mart has
such a great distribution system in place that they were able to get
staples to the people in times and places when the government agencies

[FairfieldLife] Re: Grace of Guru only...Was[Guru Dev and Sri Vidya...Origins?]

2005-09-09 Thread Cliff
Sorry, but *One Almighty* neither implies one door, nor His, nor one keyhole,
nor one key.

Even though there might be one ocean, there are many different rivers that flow
into it,
and an infinite number of places one can enter those many rivers, and a wide
variety of
completely acceptable craft to navigate the rivers on the journey. Your drone
of *one and
only* gives me even more pause than the original quote.

Your logic is faulty. Pretensions to supreme knowledge dressed up in
profound-sounding
words only end up being words, in the end.

This feeling of sour stomach is one of the sad results from one such as the
leader of the
TMO.
Disbelief in all what Veda has laid down.

If there is only One Almighty, then it seems there would be only one door to
enter His
domain, therefore just one keyhole with which only one key would fit. Who's
going to give
you that key?

God is Guru..Guru is God.

Who gets anything other that what they deserve?
Perhaps someday a Divine antacid will come your way.

Let's assume you're correct, although I don't think you are.

They why do you object to people being free to take a job or not,
depending on what they're offered?

If not enough is offered, the rebuilding won't happen. If enough
is offered, it will. I do not understand your objection at all.

On the other hand, "we" includes him. (In fact, one
might even read it as the "royal we," referring to
himself alone. He frequently uses "we" to mean
himself.)

Can you "pass the bar" without an accredited degree? Just because he
works as a "lawyer" doesn't mean he's licensed to practice law
anywhere.

No teenagers or low-skill workers are going to be involved in
rebuilding a disaster-area. You need your very best to handle the
demands. I mean, they're going to be buildingin a contaminated swamp

Is it possible you've missed that this is a disaster relief and
rebuilding effort, not a $500 million pork-bridge in Alaska?

[FairfieldLife] Re: 'Bush: "The Buck Stops Anywhere, But Here"

2005-09-09 Thread Cliff
I like to think of myself as an observer and commentator, but not an
apologist. I try to describe what I see and experience and draw
conclusions from the same, not paying too much attention to what
the *accepted wisdom* is on any given topic.

I think our ability to work together in large organizations
is critical to much of what we, as a species, have come to enjoy. It's also
produced many of our most difficult challenges.

But humans overwhelmingly vote for what only large, stable, long-lived
organizations (business, education, government, etc.) can provide. And we
have for thousands of years.

I've been a manager in company, have you? I know the reality very
well. Company size was an issue of intense discussion. We watched as
the company CEO fell out of control when it was taken public and grew to
over 400 people. We also saw this happen with other companies.

In my case I wound up with 24 people in my group to manage. Now anyone
who knows anything about management that it is difficult to manage a
group of any more than 8 people. This has been recognized in the
military for years. I had to create yet another layer of management

These days a lot of these things are assembled from stuff supplied by
smaller companies. It's been that way for some time. I'm not saying
that every large business does that but many do.

Also when we have smaller companies then they employ more people and
employment becomes less of a problem. People enjoy working in smaller
companies than large ones as the retain their identity and know more of
the people they work with.

Then we have the issue of corporations which have become psychopathic
and destructive to the society and the environment. It would be far
better to limit corporation size, rights and life span as we did in the
US prior to the Civil War.

Some of this psychopathic behavior is due to companies going public.
They begin to work for the investor and not the customer. Often doing
so they lose what made them successful in the first place. There is a
saying, "before going public you work for dollars. After going public
you work for quarters."

Have a nice time working at Wal-Mart. ;-)

[FairfieldLife] Fw: Founders Day September 12, 2005

2005-09-09 Thread George DeForest
Title: Founders Day September 12, 2005

.

Dear Alumni and
Friends,This Monday marks the 34th anniversary of the founding of Maharishi
  University of Management
and as many of us remember, Maharishi International University. How can we
ever begin to thank Maharishi for all the love, precious wisdom, and great
patience he has bestowed upon us throughout the years?Let's
celebrate together this coming Monday evening, September 12. Plans are still in the works. We are hopeful to
connect with Holland or at least have some inspirational words. Locally, I
would like to invite all those who wish to share in the "yagya" of
thanksgiving to our Founder, to help bake sweets and treats and bring them
to the Dome Monday evening, bring flowers or plants to help decorate the
stage, and any other ideas you may have. Maharishi had organized
such a magnificent celebration of thanks honoring Guru Dev this recent
Guru Purnima Celebration that it would be so wonderful to return that
thanks to Maharishi. Please call me or email me with your thoughts and
let's all plan a beautiful evening together, beginning with large group
  program.Jai Guru DevJennine

[FairfieldLife] Re: 'Bush: "The Buck Stops Anywhere, But Here"

2005-09-09 Thread Cliff
There are many corporations of much larger than 200 people who can
trace their existence back hundreds of years. Your implication that only
a *fool* or a *megalomaniac* would ever take on the task of leading such
an entity betrays your intense anti-business bias, I would suggest, and has
very little to do with reality.

If big business is so horrible and run by such truly awful people, why do
you drive a car? Why do you fly in airplanes? Why do you use dish-washers
and vacuum cleaners? Why do you shop in grocery stores rather than pluck
your own weeds? Every day you willingly, gladly and completely unthink-
ingly use thousands of products which could only have been produced by
long-lived, stable, efficient companies of vastly more than 200 people.

Bashing big business is so sophomoric. You would prefer the Middle Ages,
I assume? For what - the fresh air? Outside of cities, perhaps, but the
stench and filth in cities came WAY before big business. For the educational
opportunities? Big smile on that one. For the simplicity of life? Well, 80%
of people dying by age 5 and most of the rest dying by age 30 does cut down
on the number of choices one has to make, so life was simpler in that respect.

Yes, there are many examples of bad apples in big business. There are even
more examples of bad apples who are loners. So what? Look what you
choose by essentially every action you take, including looking at this website
which involves the intense cooperation of hundreds of different large business
entities, and see what your actions say about your feelings. Drop the
posturing, please. It's sort of like Maharishi nattering on about how horrible
western medicine is when he would have died multiple times already without it.
Totally undercuts the argument.

There is ALWAYS something that can be improved in any situation. Always. I
think that focusing on that makes way more sense than bitching about things
that obviously work so well that you perpetually choose them.

No one has ever said karma is instant that I recall hearing, and in
any case, all actions are possible to justify if one tries hard enough.

*Well, since you all are so stupid as to keep giving us money when
we've clearly lied to you over and over again, we don't get bad karma
from doing this. We're just the agents of your own karma trying to
teach you to pay attention and quit believing con men and frauds. We

Benevolent of him, since the failure is his.

Caught my eye too. I suspect it's one of his
quasi-gnomic statements that's open to multiple
interpretations. The way I read it, he's saying
there's an explanation that makes sense (the "logic"),
but at the same time, in characterizing it as
"hiding," he's also suggesting that it's an excuse.

As in: Some of you are mature enough to take
responsibility for the failure without being crushed,
and you don't need the excuse; those of you who
who aren't that mature, here's something you can hide
behind.

And the whole tone of the

He's being more explicit about the failure than
I've seen before, actually, but for whatever
reason he's not lambasting the teachers for it.

Sorry - the universe is too vast for there to be an "only means". And

[FairfieldLife] Re: New Orleans Death Toll may be much less...

2005-09-09 Thread Cliff
That's been my point for a while - touting HUGE numbers of deaths is a
great political play, particularly when you're trying desperately to point the
blame finger away from yourself. More input:

Katrina death toll still a question

Sep 8, 10:34 PM (ET)

By Jim Loney

BATON ROUGE, La., Sept 8 - Estimates of the death toll from Hurricane Katrina
have run as
high as 10,000 but the actual body count so far is much lower and officials who
feared the
worst now hope the dire predictions were wrong.

The recovery of Katrina's victims speeded up in the last two days. As of
Thursday,
Mississippi had recorded 201 deaths and Louisiana 118, while other affected
states had
much lower numbers.

However, we seem to have lots of fools and megalomaniacs that are

There is a TRUE guru walking the planet. The Adiguru Lord Dattatreya's Avatara
Sri
Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamiji.
Greater scholars than those perported in this forum have attempted to prove
otherwise.
Wanna make and attempt?
Dattatreya must be familiar to you?

You can read for yourself what the Shankaracharya of Sringeri said when the
Shankaracharya visited Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamiji in Mysore.
Note who visited who.

The answer I gave does not make the claim that I could read Sanskrit.
I do see written above your claim that people can't read it.

According to Shankara one needs initiation from Guru in order to gain
liberation.

Again, the point was about proper (improper) performance of puja and not
meditating.

Your statement is a very revealing one.
Guru cannot be limited to the physical form.

The sloka says: "His mind doesn't set at the feet of Guru."

Sri Swamiji has been around the world over 65 times. It wasn't in India where
He became
available to this sadhaka. He is available through His music and thousands of
songs
containing these bijas to which you refer. His music is most beautiful, His
voice divine, so
many songs to Devi.

Tantra...Veda... the line is definitely very very thin.

Dattatreya's ways are very tricky and not for everyone.

Funny, but I've never consider the ethical or karmic ramifications
of Maharishi's nephews skimming all that money for their own
purposes. In Maharishi's universe, where entire nations are
subject to instant karma, shouldn't the nephews be burning
in hell or something?

If they're not suffering, can we presume that (1) karma isn't instant,
or (2) they didn't take the money?

So let me get this straight Tom. In this forum of about 1,000 members of FFL,
you are saying "Yes, I hate Jews, I hate Blacks and other minorities. I'm glad
for the suffering in New Orleans and it is a shame that the whole place wasn't
wiped off the earth with all its inhabitants".

That is what you are saying proudly?

When you see photos of kids who lost their parents and parents who lost their
kids in the flood, you feel what.a little compassion for their pain, or
that they
got what they deserved?

Admittedly I don't know much about yagyas, yajnas, or whatever. But I know
they are a form of prayer. I'm just wondering how you have the balls to ask
god in whatever form you believe in, to help you, to support your life and
what
you want to make of it.

A word of advice Tom, keep your head down and don't go out when there is a
chance of lightning.

[FairfieldLife] Fwd: [Transcendental_Meditation] Global Press Conference: Aug. 24, 2005

2005-09-09 Thread Ron F
Note: forwarded message attached.

The Luck of the World

Global Press Conference,  24.8.05

MAHARISHI:   ...sometimes we begin to feel to be angry
on these people
(government). Then we compromise and say, those who
can not think properly
how can we be angry on them. Their brain is
functioning distorted. So how
can we be angry on them. They have been drugged in
their early stages. They
are not eating proper food. In the name of medicine
they are eating poison
for new diseases to come up. How you can expect them
to be sensible to
themselves or sensible to others...

So the conclusion in my mind is, do what we ourselves
can do. Do what we
can do and don`t think much of anything. Whatever
coherence we can create in
any country, that will be our contribution for
creating that coherence in
the national consciousness. Governments are not in the
position to hear...

We still have hope in a hopeless world. We are trying
to gather (big groups)
very soon. But the destiny of the people doesn`t allow
us to light the big
lamp so quickly so that immediately the deep darkness
simply disappears. It
is the fate of the people. Fate of the people. But
still I am hopeful. I am
continuing...

It is not necessary to be angry on them because, if a
man is rushing on to
the hell, you can`t stop him. He is running and
rushing to get into the
gates of hell. What you can do?  But inform him before
he starts in that
direction. Tell him you are divine inside, you are
cosmic inside, you are
universal inside. Your soul is a unified field. You
are bliss inside. You
are a flow of bliss. You are a flow of total Natural
Law. You are
invincible. You are powerful. You are integrated...

It is just a matter of the total atmosphere which has
a great influence on
the individual. And the total atmosphere we are aiming
at,  purifying the
total atmosphere. Harmony, positivity in the national
consciousness of every
country, in the world consciousness. Big groups, big
groups.

And we are finding our way to create big groups even
so it is not happening
so quickly. But we can attribute it to not lack of our
efforts but lack of
the luck of the world. We have to hide somewhere. So
we hide behind the
logic that it is the lack of luck of the world that it

There we take refuge. If it is not going fast we have
a logic, it is the
luck of the world.

But it is enjoyable, this way or that way. We are on
the right way.

The Luck of the World

Global Press Conference,  24.8.05

MAHARISHI:   ...sometimes we begin to feel to be angry
on these people
(government). Then we compromise and say, those who
can not think properly
how can we be angry on them. Their brain is
functioning distorted. So how
can we be angry on them. They have been drugged in
their early stages. They
are not eating proper food. In the name of medicine
they are eating poison
for new diseases to come up. How you can expect them
to be sensible to
themselves or sensible to others...

So the conclusion in my mind is, do what we ourselves
can do. Do what we
can do and don`t think much of anything. Whatever
coherence we can create in
any country, that will be our contribution for
creating that coherence in
the national consciousness. Governments are not in the
position to hear...

We still have hope in a hopeless world. We are trying
to gather (big groups)
very soon. But the destiny of the people doesn`t allow
us to light the big
lamp so quickly so that immediately the deep darkness
simply disappears. It
is the fate of the people. Fate of the people. But
still I am hopeful. I am
continuing...

It is not necessary to be angry on them because, if a
man is rushing on to
the hell, you can`t stop him. He is running and
rushing to get into the
gates of hell. What you can do?  But inform him before
he starts in that
direction. Tell him you are divine inside, you are

Batista's brother-in-law controlled all 10,000 slot machines in Cuba,
which contributed million to the regime's bank account. The slot
machines, symbols of the ousted leader, were especially sought out by
the mobs.

The government was to get $25,000 for license plus twenty percent of
the profits from each casino. What Batista and the "in group" got has
never been certified. It was rumored that to get a license a fee for
$250,000 and sometimes more was required under the table. Periodic
payoffs were requested and received by the corrupt politicians.

With the U.S. government's full support, including arms, bombers, and
fighter planes, Batista's forces fought to suppress the revolution
and, during the course of the war, killed almost 20,000 Cubans. But
the Cuban people had had enough of Batista, the Mafia, political
corruption, tortures, and murders —as well as the U.S. government's
support of it all. The Cuban poor joined up with Castro's forces.

http://www.thescreamonline.com/essays/essays4-1/batista.html

THE COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE (April 9, 1952) showed a photo of Batista
with a Cuban flag behind him, and the caption: "Cuba's Batista: he got
past Democracy's sentries." Ironically, that was not the first time
that Batista had bypassed the process of Democracy, with the full
blessing and encouragement of its self-appointed guardians. Twenty
years earlier Batista had become the strongman that would come to
symbolize the heart and soul of Roosevelt's "Good Neighbor Policy."
...
Batista opened the way for large-scale gambling in Havana, and he
reorganized the Cuban state so that he and his political appointees
could harvest the nation's riches. He announced that his government
would match, dollar for dollar, any hotel investment over $1 million,
which would include a casino license, and Lansky became the center of
the entire Cuban gambling operation.
...
Due to popular unrest, and to apiece his U.S. friends, Batista held a
mock election in which he was the only legal candidate. He won,
becoming president of Cuba in 1954. Cubans, however, had learned not
to trust him, and were demanding new, legitimate elections.

...
By late 1955 student riots and anti-Batista demonstration had become
frequent. These were dealt with in the violent manner his military
police had come to represent. Students attempting to march from the
University of Havana were stopped and beaten by the police, and
student leader José A. Echeverría had to be hospitalized. Another
popular student leader was killed on December 10, leading to a funeral
that became a gigantic political protest with a 5-minute nationwide
work stoppage.

Instead of loosening his grip, Batista suspended constitutional
guarantees and established tighter censorship of the media. His
military police would patrol the streets and pick up anyone suspected
of insurrection. By the end of 1955 they had grown more prone to
violent acts of brutality and torture, with no fear of legal
repercussions.

Before the Cuban revolution, Cuba's mercantilist economic system was
similar to those found in other Latin American countries, with the
state controlling, regulating, and taxing economic activity for the
benefit of those who were politically privileged. Today, the term
would be "crony capitalism."
...

Among Batista's favorite cronies were Mafia bosses, who moved their
operations to Havana when their casinos in Florida were shut down.
With Batista's full blessing and assistance, the Mafia made Cuba its
base of operations, not only for gambling, but for heroin and cocaine
distribution into the United States as well. Of course, the Mafia
bosses, in turn, kicked back nice sums of money to Batista.

Batista was the U.S. government's "man in Havana," even though U.S.
officials knew that he was a brutal, antidemocratic, corrupt tyrant in
full partnership with Mafia murderers and drug dealers. None of this
mattered to Washington policymakers. What mattered was that as "our
man in Havana," when Batista received orders from Washington, he obeyed.

Batista formed a partnership with the Mafia. Ciudad La Habana became

The Batista-Lansky Alliance
How the mafia and a Cuban dictator built Havana's casinos
By Matthew Reiss

It was December 31, 1958. Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista raised a
New Year's Eve toast to his cabinet members and senior military
officers and wished them hasta la vista. After seven years of building
Havana's tourism industry by inviting gangsters such as Meyer Lansky
to construct casinos, helping to fund their enterprises and taking a
large chunk of the proceeds for himself, Batista knew his presidency
was over. His plundering had weakened Cuba's treasury and demoralized
the army. He filled three cargo planes with all he could carry and was
on his way to the Dominican Republic before the sun came up on 1959.

...But while Castro could close the casinos, arrest the gangsters and
deport or imprison Batista's henchmen, he could not bury the
skyscrapers that had drained the wealth of the island. Castro
inherited from Batista a Havana of overt poverty and ostentatious
wealth, where the haves of the world's richest nations had come to
exploit the have-nots; where statues of Lenin and Marx would be
dwarfed by glass and stone monuments to the Mob; where the nation's
architectural landmarks would be a constant reminder of the days when
criminals were in charge and the Mafia roamed free.

...
But until that last day of 1958, the only revolution that mattered to
Mafia financier Lansky involved a roulette wheel. During the Batista
years, Cuba was a place where a crooked man could make an honest
living. After a half century on the wrong side of the law in the
United States, the celebrated gangster was legit. America's high
rollers and celebrities were living large in the casino of Lansky's
luxury hotel, the Riviera, and the drinks were on the house.

In the mid-1930s, a Cuban army sergeant named Fulgencio Batista took
advantage of political chaos in the former Spanish colony and formed
his own government. At the time, the island republic was foundering,
as was its gambling industry. Years before, Havana's nightlife had
attracted wealthy entertainers from the United States, such as Sarah
Bernhardt and Enrico Caruso. But Cuba's gaming industry had become
mired in cheating and corruption by the 1930s. So, in 1939, Batista
recruited a New England racetrack owner named Lou Smith to revive
Havana's Oriental Park track and Meyer Lansky to clean up the casinos.

Two months before the 1952 presidential elections, Batista snatched
control of the government that he had relinquished, and quickly put
gambling back on track. Once again, the dictator contacted Lansky, but
this time he gave him an annual salary of $25,000 to serve as an
unofficial gambling minister.

In 1955, the Batista government passed a law granting a gaming license
to anyone who invested $1 million in a hotel or $200,000 in a new
nightclub. And that meant anyone. Unlike the procedure for acquiring
gaming licenses in Vegas, this provision exempted venture capitalists
from background checks. As long as they made the required investment,
they were provided with public matching funds for construction, a
10-year tax exemption and duty-free importation of equipment and
furnishings. Although Batista's ostensible aim was to create new jobs,
he gutted the labor laws to allow casino owners to bring their
American croupiers.

Under the Batista-Lansky administration, Havana was ripe for foreign
investment, especially for the glut of illegal earnings that Lansky
and his cronies had accumulated from bootlegging, numbers and other
rackets. The FBI was developing new ways of tracking down dirty money;
to gangsters with loads of tainted cash, Havana looked like a stable
offshore depository. The climate was so attractive that Lansky decided
to build his own hotel, the Riviera, on the Malecón, Havana's wide
boulevard along the seawall. In 1957 it rose over the horizon like a
beacon, advertising the city as a refuge from the law.

...

During the same period, however, the people of Cuba suffered.
Government corruption was endemic, while in Havana's streets
prostitution and poverty were rampant. In the countryside, the
peasants were suffering as well; Batista poured the nation's wealth
into the capital. He gave the gangsters millions in government funds
for hotel construction and spent millions more reclaiming valuable
waterfront real estate from the sea. Construction of Lansky's Riviera
went for about $18 milli

No higher knowledge, indeed. Sri Mata Rajarajeshwari rules it.

There is someone who knows.

Strong statement. Believe what you will.
The only means of liberation is the Grace of Guru.

Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamiji of Mysore, India is revered throughout
India and by
Shankaracharyas as well as the foremost exponent of Sri Vidya and Worship of
Mother.

This I do not doubt. Does it mean that an ordinary Joe gains liberation from
performing
this puja? It is doubtful that anyone but these swamis can properly perform
such, and if a
Joe attempted would likely bring about more disasterous results than positive.

Here is a verse from Shankara's Guru Ashtakam with commentary from Sri
Ganapathi
Sachchidananda Swamiji

Shadangaadhi Vedo Mukhe Shastra Vidhyaa
Kavitva aadhi Gadhyam Supadhyam Karoti
Guro Ranghri Padme Manasche Na Lagnam
Tatah kim Tatah kim Tatah kim Tatah kim

Shadangas, Vedas, Shastras, many studies are on the tip of one's tongue.
He can lecture on them eloquently. He can instantaneously say poetry. He gets
many praises and titles. His mind doesn't set at the feet of Guru. Then what
is the use? All these are a waste.

I don't recall him saying "ALL the problems" were caused by karma, I think
you are generalizing. I like the naiveté of "imbalanced water element" as
the cause of floods--hell even a hydrologist or meteorologist might agree
with that!

Because karma is not a linear or simple phenomenon. Perhaps I should post my
obligatory karma FAQ again...even a seed needs certain conditions if it is
to spring into manifestation as a plant...karma is more like that. Was this
"crop of people" sharing some common karmic causes? Perhaps.

I'm sorry, that's extra.

The intent was to send something to Lhundrub which happened to be by someone
he cared dearly about, one of his teachers. If he cracks even a dim smile,
my intent was served.

Actually, it's good internet etiquette to do a little snipping, so
that others don't have to reread the same posts over and over again
to get to your point. For example, I've done a little snipping

They did get hit by a quake, Richard. Sometime in the mid-1970's. Killed
somewhere between 250,000 and 750,000 people, but was well covered up

New Orleans death toll may not be "catastrophic"
Sep 09 12:31 PM US/Eastern

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - The number of dead in New Orleans may not be as high as
first
feared, the top Homeland Security official there said on Friday.

"There's some encouragement in the initial sweeps. Some of the catastrophic
deaths some
people have predicted may not have occurred," Col. Terry Ebbert, director of
Homeland
Security for the city of New Orleans said at a news conference.

"The numbers so far are relatively minor as compared with the dire predictions

Re: [FairfieldLife] Saved Through Dzogchen

2005-09-09 Thread Vaj
Title: Re: [FairfieldLife] Saved Through Dzogchen

Saw this and thought of dear Lhundrub. The Will to Love is the Law to Live - Best Wishes – V.

The Attitude to Take for Overcoming Natural Disasters
His Holiness Penor Rinpoche

7/1/2132--September 4, 2005

The present world is modernized and it is very easy for countries to communicate with each other. This has good -- and bad -- results. Everyone tells their own history and tries to explain events their way, according to internal political or religious pressures. At the same time, many religions exist in this world, as well as many qualified teachers. Anyone who is truly following their religion is thinking about how to solve the problems of this world. Meanwhile, most of the previously realized teachers have already shown us how to solve these problems for all of the beings in the universe.

But the times are now degenerating. Some of those following these religions and some who follow certain politics have gotten used to thinking and acting in a negative way. So it will not make a difference whether an individual is a good person or a bad person; we will be caused to suffer from difficulties because of our collective negative thoughts and actions. Of all these negative thoughts and actions, selfishness will create more difficulty than anything else.

That is why all the different kinds of religions are based on the benefit of all sentient beings and not focused on selfishness -- no matter what religion. Religions are for the benefit of peace and compassion for sentient beings, especially in the case of Buddhism. For us, we take vows to be helpful for all beings, without exception. We pray that we will not even use the space of one hair in a selfish way.

We already see that bad karma has the result of causing suffering. So then, of course, if we behave in a positive way, there will be benefit and fruition. If everyone -- no matter Buddhist or not, whether black or white -- prays and wishes for the same things, for happiness and peace on earth, then definitely things can be solved in a positive way.

Floods are the result of an imbalanced water element. There are also imbalances in the earth [such as earthquakes], fire [volcanoes] and air [tornados, typhoons and hurricanes]. If we are all living in harmony in the world, then naturally the elements will be balanced. Once harmonious, no imbalances will arise. [Tr. note: Rinpoche is referring to the example of sentient beings held like the objects in the pot of the elements. Once the inside is in balance, the pot will also be in balance].

When problems arise, like the Tsunami in Asia, or the flood in the United States, I personally feel very sad. It is physically hard to do anything to help.

We Tibetans also have recently faced so many problems. For example, for us, Guru Rinpoche and so many high lamas predicted we would encounter the problems we have met. They told us the method and how to solve the problems. But, because of degenerating times, collectively many of us had difficulty believing these predictions, which are hundreds, and sometimes thousands of years old. Because we collectively had difficulty believing in the truth, this came to be a difficult time for the Tibetans. Then, when the result came about, many people said, "Oh, we really made a big mistake." And a few even said, "Of course this was going to happen because we did not believe this prediction and follow the instructions."

So for us Tibetans, when we suffered, we suffered almost like a physical hell. Even still, we never gave up belief in the Three Jewels [Buddha, Dharma and Sangha].

All of these problems are the gathering of karma. [They are the consequences of our previous actions]. There is not anything to rejoice in or to regret because these are not one or two people's results, but all people's results. [Known as gathering or collective karma; Tib: Chin Thun]. Because of our past lifetimes in which we accumulated negative karma collectively, we must all collectively suffer the results. These results cannot be suffered by just one or two people.

We know that in the future we don't want this kind of suffering. So it doesn't matter what religion or color, we can build the positive collective karma together by loving each other and having compassion towards all sentient beings. This will make things better in the future so the positive result will come from the positive attitude.

COLOPHON

May the Guru remain in the world for a long time to come, may the light of His teachings pervade the sky of mind and bring happiness to all. We requested this teaching on the attitude to take in the cases of natural disasters from the compassionate one, Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche, who responded to our request with enthusiasm. The teaching was translated by Lama Lobsang Chophel and took place on September 4, 2005. May these efforts serve to awaken the absolute reality of Guru Padmasambhava in the hearts of all beings.

Well, at least that indicates he passed the bar, no? Assuming you
can't get a "law job" without being a lawyer. So how bad could it
be getting your law degree at an unaccredited school?

For those of you who love dysfunctional born-again bounty-hunting

[FairfieldLife] Re: FEMA getting the $50 billion

2005-09-09 Thread Cliff
It allows people to be employed who won't have ANY job if high minimum-
wage guidelines are enforced. This will be particularly helpful in getting
teenagers or early-20s people who have little skills back to at least some
useful work.

I think it's a great move, and I believe I understand the economics behind
it. Is it possible that you oppose it simply because Bush proposed it?

You've clearly never run even a small corporation, Robert, much
less a large one. Otherwise you'd realize what a crushing

Guess he didn't read the last part of Stossel's piece
about the heroic price-gougers:

"If this were a totalitarian country, the government might just order
a bunch of tradesmen to go to New Orleans. But in a free society,
those tradesmen must be persuaded to leave their homes and families,
leave their employers and customers, and drive from say, Wisconsin,
to take work in New Orleans. If they can't make more money in
Louisiana than Wisconsin, why would they make the trip?

"Some may be motivated by a desire to be heroic, but we can't expect
enough heroes to fill the need, week after week; most will travel
there for the same reason most Americans go to work: to make money.
Any tradesman who treks to a disaster area must get higher pay than
he would get in his hometown, or he won't do the trek. Limit him to
what his New Orleans colleagues charged before the storm, and even a
would-be hero may say, "the heck with it."

"If he charges enough to justify his venture, he's likely to be
condemned morally or legally by the very people he's trying to help.
But they just don't understand basic economics. Force prices down,
and you keep suppliers out. Let the market work, suppliers come --
and competition brings prices as low as the challenges of the
disaster allow. Goods that were in short supply become available,
even to the poor."

Since many police departments, including the one
from New Orleans, have a specially-trained unit
called the Tactical Assault Team who are on duty
in emergency situations such as this one, I think
her strategy could be termed "tit for TAT."

[FairfieldLife] Practical uses of flashing - for Tom Pall

2005-09-09 Thread Patrick Gillam
from the New York Times:

Some holdouts seem intent on keeping alive the
distinct and wild spirit of this city. In the French
Quarter, Addie Hall and Zackery Bowen found a
unusual way to make sure that police officers
regularly patrolled their house. Ms. Hall, 28, a
bartender, flashed her breasts at the police vehicles
that passed by, ensuring a regular flow of traffic.

Child Development, by Billy Collins

As sure as prehistoric fish grew legs
and sauntered off the beaches into forests
working up some irregular verbs for their
first conversation, so three-year-old children
enter the phase of name-calling.

Every day a new one arrives and is added
to the repertoire. You Dumb Goopyhead,
You Big Sewerface, You Poop-on-the-Floor
(a kind of Navaho ring to that one)
they yell from knee level, their little mugs
flushed with challenge.
Nothing Samuel Johnson would bother tossing out
in a pub, but then the toddlers are not trying
to devastate some fatuous Enlightenment hack.

They are just tormenting their fellow squirts
or going after the attention of the giants
way up there with their cocktails and bad breath
talking baritone nonsense to other giants,
waiting to call them names after thanking
them for the lovely party and hearing the door close.

The mature save their hothead invective
for things: an errant hammer, tire chains,
or receding trains missed by seconds,
though they know in their adult hearts,
even as they threaten to banish Timmy to bed
for his appalling behavior,
that their bosses are Big Fatty Stupids,
their wives are Dopey Dopeheads
and that they themselves are Mr. Sillypants.

Lots coming out on Brown, the head of FEMA, who will be in charge of
that $50 billion. As most know, he's been derided as a "horse lawyer"
with no emergency management experience (he was a lawyer for the
Arabian Horse Association from which he was ousted). More on his
official resume posted at FindLaw:

- his law school is not accredited and is regarded as a joke
- he states he was on the Dean's List at his college in OK, but the
college says NO he never was
- he states he was given the award "outstanding political science
professor" at his college, but the college says he was never a
professor at all, much less an outstanding one
- he states he was Director of a christian nursing home, but the
nursing home has never heard of him
- he was let go from his first law job, according to his boss "there
was a feeling that he was not serious and somewhat shallow".

and there's more at The New Republic and Time

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1103003,00.html

Even the New Republic is after him!!

HA! It is you who is without clue! You left off
the ' in "doesn't." How can anyone put any faith
in what someone says who can't even spell? You are
obviously a CIA stooge planted here to foment dissat-
isfaction in the TM ranks...we can tell because of
your fondness for capital letters...probably a habit
developed in a bureaucracy that thinks in acronyms.

As I pointed out in my post 3.14159265358979323846,
and in several other posts in which I thoroughly
demolished your arguments and pointed out the flaws
in your logic and exposed your phoniness, your incon-
sistency and your lies (not to mention your tiny dick),
you are not a relable source of information. Go back
to Langley, you rakshasa poo-poo head!
