Hi :)I'm confused as to why your vet is against the FeLV vaccine. I would talk with him again about the vaccine. It's not 100% effective, but it is somewhat effective in most cats. I am mixing my cats, andmy other three have been vaccinated. My Pippin isn't on any medication at this time, so I can't speak to that. I would ask a specific question in your subject line about the vaccine, so people can respond. Re: one question

2006-10-18 Thread Nina

Mi Wu,
It sounds to me like you need to find a different vet. He shouldn't be
discouraging you from finding ways to support our kitty's immune
function and good health. While it's true that most vets want to see
documented proof in the form of reputable studies, they should remain
open to anequdotal reports, or at least to their patient's wishes to try
different, even if unproven remedies. No solid evidence does not
equate to no beneficial response. Perhaps his comment was specific to
whatever medicine you were asking about. From the little you've said
about him, I'm surprised he didn't suggest you put Prince to sleep as
soon as you found out he was pos.

I don't know what he's talking about with his comment of a serious side
effect with the felv vaccine. Perhaps he was talking about VAS
(Vaccine Associated Sarcoma) which is possible with any vaccine. I've
read articles stating that the chance of VAS is greater than a cat
contracting felv and so they discourage people from getting the shot.
Actually knowing that your neg cats are exposed to a pos puts them at
greater risk then the general population though. Could you ask him to
elaborate and then let us know what he has to say?

I'm not sure what Leslie has Satch and Bea on. I know that she was
concerned about sneezing and possible asthma, perhaps it has to do with
that. Most everyone has their kitties on immune boosting supplements.
If you don't get the response from the group you were looking for, post
your question again with something more specific in the subject line.

re: Junior and Sally

2006-10-18 Thread Gina WN
Hi Sally,From what I am reading you don't need to make any decisions about putting Junior to sleep right this minute; is that correct? He has an upper respiratory infection that is being treated, and is he otherwise okay (other than being FeLV+), right? Why does the vet want to put him to sleep tomorrow? You've got a lot on your plate right now, and I can understand why you are emotionally drained. If Junior is basically alright despite the URI, why not just keep him separate for awhile from Tiny (like you are alreadydoing) and then make decisions as needed. It's too much to ask yourself to make decisions about all your kitties at one time. You need to process this.My thoughts and prayers are with you Sally.Gina Sally Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi,Everyday that goes by I am more confused. Junior went to the vet today. I know at least for this moment he is not ready to cross that bridge. I have separated him and Tiny. The other cats are still locked outside the bedrooms. And mostly stay outside for their own safety. I know this group is for the cats, but I am mentally, emotionally, and physically drained.I had reactive hypoglycemia this morning.I have ordered immuno-regulan on Kelly's advice. I now will have to talk the vet into giving it. I printed out the protocol for
administering it.Does anyone out there know of vets in the Richmond VA area who may be willing to work with me. I will not put him through that ordeal unless I think there is a problem. Junior and Tiny don;t like each other. They don't fight, but they do growl a lot at each other. For now I will keep them separate. Another thought is to find an alternative vet to compliment your regular vet
(Again, hopefully a new regular vet). I have and the AV and RV talk to each
other and work together. They may not always see eye to eye but they are
willing to listen and try different things. This relationship has existed
with both dogs and cats and conditions other the FeLV. In fact my RV sent
me to the AV when I had a beagle with what we thought was disc trouble.

HI everyone

I think My server is sending mail again. All those emails were qued (sp)
up and sent them at one sorry for the duplicates.

Junior is still doing fine since his vet visit. He is asserting his self
over Tiny. I try to separate them but this is a very small house and i
hate keeping them totally couped up, because I am sure they think they are
being punished.

Tiny ran outside today. He loves the outdoors and could survive outside
on his own if something happened to me. I did manage to catch him as he
still is lovey-dovey to me. I tend to be a bit scattered and probably ADD.
I forgot he was not in the bedroom when I opened the door to feed the
other cats. I have l not seen Little Black for several days. She is semi
wild and the other cats pick on her. Read, won't let her eat.

I ordered the immuno-regulin and have not yet received it but I know I
will have questions. Thanks for all the help. Junior did not survive
getting hit by a car just to have this get him.

I have not read emails this morning. I hope Leslie got her other cat back
by now. I lost a cat two years ago and much as I searched and asked around
never found him..he was such a funny cat. I still miss him.

Sally

Re: VERY impt note about chipping Re: HAPPYHAPPYJOYJOY!!!!

2006-10-18 Thread Precious Pets, Almost Home
Avid micro-chipping registration fee is $15.00 per
animal. Avid has a registration program for eight
pets for the total cost of $40.00. This is even worth
using if you only have three animals because you save
$5.00. There is a $4.00 surcharge for every time you
update your personal information.

If I am not mistaken Avid is the number one micro-chip
company in the United States being used by animal
shelters and rescue groups. Home Again is the second
leading micro-chip company being used. I know in
Chicago, Illinois that the city's animal control and
Anti-cruelty Society (the biggest non-government
agency) use Avid micro-chips on their animals. The
group I volunteer for Precious Pets, Almost Home uses
the Avid micro-chips in their rescue pets.

You may want to check the shelters and rescue groups
in your area to see what brand of micro-chips they are
using. You see Avid micro-chip scanners do not read
the Home Again micro-chips and vice a verse. There is
a universal micro-chip scanner that can pick up all
different types of micro-chips. The problem is that
most shelters and rescue groups do not have one! The
universal micro-chip scanner is very expensive!

Since I started doing rescue, I encourage anybody that
ask me about it to have their pet micro-chip! Food
for thought!

P. S. I am behind in reading the groups' posts. So my
apologies in advance if this information has been

Hi you wonderful group you,

Leslie will post more tomorrow, I was so excited I'm not sure if I've got the details right, but here's a rough version of how she got him back:
He was hanging out near an electronics? store a little north of where he was stolen. They were feeding him, a girl (from the store?) brought him to the vet to see if he had a microchip, but the vet had a hard time and couldn't get a reading on it. They planned to bring him back the next day to try for a reading again. Meanwhile, the girl called her mom and told her "Mom, I found the nicest cat for you." The mom saw the story on the news tonight and either she or her daughter called Leslie.I think she has him back home right now. Beatrix is still missing, but at least they have an area on which to concentrate. Keep thinking those good thoughts and give your furbabies an extra hug tonight...

Someone needs to come up with a listing (with links)by state of all the sites on which a lost pet could be posted. Anybody know if such a thing exists? Hi Kayte and Crackers!
Someone stole Leslie's carMonday
morning--right in front of her eyes--with her 2 sweet FeLV babes still in
it---as soon as she told the list, a bunch of the wonderful people on the list
and Leslie herself combined forces to use every possible means under the sun to
get her babes back...including bombarding media, which resulted in a TV
appearance by Leslie last night...and --TA-DA!!!--the safe return of her babes!
Satch first, then later, Bea!
Hope you're feeling better now,
Kayte,
Kerry PS See Leslie's email of
Monday:

oh guys, my heart is so heavy and I think that my stinging eyes might just
make me too tired to actually sleep tonight. I have read all of your posts
and printed them to go over tonight and make sure that I follow all
advice.I'll put below what I sent to news stations and newspapers,
please send revisions to make it better. Do you think that I can resend it
to them tomorrow? I'll also call tomorrow those that I sent to today and
send to more that I think of. Of course assoon as it was sent I
thought of ways to make it better, but I just wanted to get something off
quickly.

I'm so exhausted, and I've had to deal with regular stuff too like a
replacement driver's license (trust me, the DMV is NOT where you want to be in
this deflated mood - you actually feel like you belong there) and phone and
rental car and prescriptions. Too bad they had to retake my photo at the
DMV and now I'll have to remember this day.

If the cats weren't involved I'd just be angry. As I walked out to
catch him taking the car, as I touched the car, as I know that he heard my
voice, that they heard my voice, my feelings of what if, what if, are so
overwhelming. But as he took it. As he took them. As he drove
away with the beings that I swore to protect, that I promised them I would
protect, as he took them farther, is still taking them farther as minutes go
into minutes, my despair, my hyperventilation is just going and going. I
don't blame myself, it is so absurd. How could I have known? I
couldn't have, so I don't blame myself. But I don't know how I'll be able
to sleep tonight knowing that they are out there. That it is raining and I
don't know where they are.

Oh, I keep forgetting to mention, I am in Portland, OR. They were
taken from Vancouver, WA, I live in Portland.

I don't want to take an Ambien tonight, because what if the police call,
but I know that I won't sleep. As I don't have a computer at home there is
nothing that I can do, but wait to get back to work and do more.

I lay my head on all of your shoulders tonight and ask that you send your
furbabies spirits to be with Satch and Beatrix. And maybe one or two to
sleep next to me tonight.

Hideyo, I hear you. I will find them. I will get them
back. And they will be okay. I feel the thread. I feel it
going to them and protecting them. I feel you all.

I don't know anyone could do this with a child in the car. It would
be evenmore unbearable.

Anyway, on to class, no more to do tonight.

Leslie

---
Hello,
My name is Leslie Nies and my car was stolen this
morning at 6:30 am . I was loading up my car getting ready to
drive home from a weekend at my boyfriends (he lives in Vancouver, I live in
Portland)- which included overnight bag, book bag, and
my two pet cats, Satchmo and Beatrix. I went inside to say goodbye and
when I came back out, someone was backing my car out the driveway. The
doors were unlocked, but the keys were in my pocket, so they must have hotwired
it. I ran toward them yelling "hey" and "get out" and started banging on
the windshield as they put it in drive. But they kept accelerating.

My boyfriend was already on the phone with the police
when I got back inside. Yes, they stole my car, but they also stole my
cats! I can only believe that they didn't see them. It's been
suggested to me by a couple of people that you might be interested in doing a
story on it, and as far as I'm concerned, anything that might help me get them
back is worth it. I've attached a picture of each of them, there are more
on my phone, but that was in the car also.

They are just the best cats and I am going out of my
mind worrying about finding them now. They are both leukemia positive,
which means that they have compromised immune systems (and why they are indoor
only) and though they are currently healthy and rambunctious are on a preventive
vitamin. I don't care about the
car or the stuff in it, I just want my cats back. Both are microchipped,
but neither have collars as they are indoor only cats. Let me tell you a
little about them.

Satchmo is a 6-yr old brown tabby cat. I
rescued him from the Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood two years ago. I
started out fostering him, but ended up adotping him. When he came to me,
he had a very severe kitty cold that he needed to be nursed through and
immediately following that he developed

That's terrible!!! It was confusing enough just trying to get two pets listed, I can't imagine what you volunteers went through trying to find multiple pets... Idid like the"MissingPetsNetwork", they have some sort of tie to the USDA, nicely organized by state and easy to use. Too bad someone just can't say "OK, this is the one, bye-bye all you other lists." But, I guesssome of the lists have commercial links that would make it difficult to get rid of them, and others just want to help in anyway they can.Too bad the pet community can't come to some sort of consensus about this, orget some kind of bill passed to help.

Take care,
Beth

What I learned

2006-10-18 Thread Leslie
I just wanted to share this with you, looking back on the things that I will/won't do differently in the future.

1. Microchip everything. I should microchip the car. Even with the slight snag with Satch's chip, I feel that they would have sorted it out and gotten him to me.

2. Put a bumper sticker on your car. I hate bumper stickers, but putting out a notice on a nondescript white car - which matches the description of 90% of cars out there, it seems, I'm going to put a pink one on there from a CD store back home. License plates numbers are hard to remember and easy to remove - bumper stickers aren't.

3. Collars. I don't think that having the cats in a carrier would have been better - in fact maybe worse, because they wouldn't be able to leave the car, but even as indoor cats, I see how collars are a good idea.

4. Cut off switch in the car. Who would want this car? I felt, and still feel to some extent, but whether or not I know the answer to that is not the point. I don't know who and I don't know why, I just know that they did and if there's a simple fix to prevent it from happening again, even if it probably won't ever in my lifetime, I am going to take it in order to feel safer.

5. Be a member of this list for life. Give back, be open, because you will probably never meet such a wonderful and supportive group of people your entire life.

Stay safe you all, I'm off to stiller waters - though I know that my tv-viewing public will be so sad by that. :)

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry that it's taken so long to give you the recap, but the saga
has continued.

Okay, Beth's recount of how I got Satch is spot on - I found him
through a call generated by the broadcast about 5 miles north of where the car
was stolen. The confusion with the microchip reading was actually at the
shelter that he's co-registered to. They just switched their computer
system and have the files from 2004 on paper still - I know this because it
took a couple of calls for me to convince them that Satch and I existed to
them.

So once I knew where Satch was, I figured that Beamight be in the
same area - the fear that she'd been scared under a seat was there, but at
least I had a place to start. So I took the flyers that I had in my car
and went over to a nearby apartment complex - I really think that you guys, the
spirits of all of our past cats were guiding me to this place - to put flyers
on cars in the lot there (little did I know that if I'd continued further down
one row I'd get to my own car! But that comes later...). Nina, this
is when you called andI so feel thatthatlittle distraction of
mind (my talking to you while putting out flyers) opens the motions of the body
up to the will of the universe, my methodical flyer placement became a little
sporadic as I told you the story and shared my excitement - moving across and
up and over the rows, not just down them, I'm certain that this is when I put a
flyer on the right car. About an hour later I got a call from Bea's
microchip company, a girl in that apartment complex had seen one and took the
sweet little kitten she'd found to the vet to get scanned. And it was
Beatrix. The chip company gave me her phone number and I went right back
over to pick her up.

The first woman (who had been hoping that Satch would become their
store mascot - evidently anytime someone opened the door to the back, he'd run
in and go visit people) soundly refused the reward. The girl who found
Beatrix was young - late teens, early 20's - and lived in a not so nice
area. It would havebeen so easy for her to keep Bea, so
Ifoisted a reward of $100 on her. I was just so appreciative that
she called. Mywork, Full Sail Brewing, was so impressed with the
story, they are sending the newswoman, Amy Troy, and the cameraman, Steve, $100
gift certificates each for a trip to the brewery in thanks for helping.

So to answer the questions about needing more reward money - I am
good, and for those who have sent funds, your money is so appreciated and
has been/will be put to good use. For the reward for the girl, Iris, and
to replace cat medications that were in the car.

So more about last night below, but today the news station called, they
wanted to do a follow up. I met just the cameraman at my apartment and
told him why leukemia cats are so wonderful and why people shouldn't be afraid
of adopting them, or keeping them when they test positive. I told him how
the negative vibes of theviolence from a stranger had been overwhelmed by
the positive vibes of the kindness of strangers. I thanked him and
thanked him.

Then I went back to the area that they were found on my lunch break and
took a stab at looking for the car. I called the police department this
morning to follow up on the messages I left last night, the operator said that
she forwarded the messages to the responding officer's voicemail, but that he
was off until Monday. IfI wanted to go look for the car,
fine. If I found it, call 911. I thought that the chance of me
finding this car were minimal - I don't know the area, don't know anywhere but
that apartment complex. So I went there to start. I was driving
down the rows of cars, and saw yet another white car two from the end. It
was a Mazda. It was a Protege. It had my license plate!

I started shaking, I couldn't believe it. The anger and fear of
the last time I saw it came flooding back, I didn't know whether to stand by it
or to run

I've been waiting all day for your update. I was holding it together
until you mentioned singing the praises of felv kitties in your follow
up interview. The damn broke once again and the tears are flowing! I
always feel connected to everyone's fur kids, but I feel like Satch and
Bea's Godmother now! I feel like I should be sending them birthday
cards with 5 bucks in them every year :). Go out and buy yourselves
some catnip kids!

You sure have all had yourselves quite an adventure! How did you do on
that test? Hopefully the Angels were sticking around for that too. I
can't believe you even found the car! Do you think the guy that took it
had the window down and the food out thinking the cats would live there
or some such nonsense? I'm sending out blessings to him too today.

Keep a close eye on those two. The no stress rule has been shot
completely out of the water! Do you have any Terramycin ointment in the
house for Satch's eye? Swab it with a saline soaked cotton ball too.

Oh my dear, hugs to you and those sweet protected babies! Ya done GOOD!
Nina

I just wanted to share this with you, looking back on the things that I will/won't do differently in the future. 1.Microchip everything.I should microchip the car.Even with the slight
snag with Satch's chip, I feel that they would have sorted it out and gotten him to me. 2.Put a bumper sticker on your car.I hate bumper stickers, but putting out a notice on a nondescript white car - which matches the description of
90% of cars out there, it seems, I'm going to put a pink one on there from a CD store back home.License plates numbers are hard to remember and easy to remove - bumper stickers aren't.
3.Collars.I don't think that having the cats in a carrier would have been better - in fact maybe worse, because they wouldn't be able to leave the car, but even as indoor cats, I see how collars are a good idea.
4.Cut off switch in the car.Who would want this car?I felt, and still feel to some extent, but whether or not I know the answer to that is not the point.I don't know who and I don't know why, I just know that they did and
if there's a simple fix to prevent it from happening again, even if it probably won't ever in my lifetime, I am going to take it in order to feel safer. 5.Be a member of this list for life.Give back, be open, because you will
probably never meet such a wonderful and supportive group of people your entire life. Stay safe you all, I'm off to stiller waters - though I know that my tv-viewing public will be so sad by that.:)

Re: Junior update

2006-10-18 Thread Sally Davis
Little Black showed up this morning. I usually let her in long enough for
her to get her fill without the other cats harassing her. The FeLV cats
were closed up in the bedrooms. She ate in peace. As far as I know when I
do see her she only eats once a day, but she gobbles up a lot of food
during that time.

HI everyone

I think My server is sending mail again. All those emails were qued (sp)
up and sent them at one sorry for the duplicates.

Junior is still doing fine since his vet visit. He is asserting his self
over Tiny. I try to separate them but this is a very small house and i
hate keeping them totally couped up, because I am sure they think they
are being punished.

Tiny ran outside today. He loves the outdoors and could survive outside
on his own if something happened to me. I did manage to catch him as he
still is lovey-dovey to me. I tend to be a bit scattered and probably
ADD. I forgot he was not in the bedroom when I opened the door to feed
the other cats. I have l not seen Little Black for several days. She is
semi wild and the other cats pick on her. Read, won't let her eat.

I ordered the immuno-regulin and have not yet received it but I know I
will have questions. Thanks for all the help. Junior did not survive
getting hit by a car just to have this get him.

I have not read emails this morning. I hope Leslie got her other cat back
by now. I lost a cat two years ago and much as I searched and asked
around never found him..he was such a funny cat. I still miss him.

Sally
