Thanks Belinda all of you for your support prayers. The
vet called Peanut's liver values were all elevated. Her bilirubin
white count were thru the roof. He thinks that cholangiohepatitis is
the most likely culprit. I took her to the vet for 3 days of supportive
care treatment (IV fluids, antibiotics, syringe feeding). I hated to
do it...I don't want her to feel scared, but I felt it was her only
chance. I really felt that she wouldn'thave survived the night if I
had kept her here. It was really hard to leave, but I'm hoping this will
turn her around. I had to go to work after that there were no phone
calls from them since I dropped her off, so I'm considering that to be good
news. They would have called me if she would have needed to be moved to a
24 hour vet for overnite care, so she was apparently medically stable enough to
go the night there. Thanks again for the prayers keep 'em coming

Leslie,

I can't tell you how heartened I am to hear your story about Goliath.
Even Peanut's ears were yellow when I dropped her off...I was pretty scared, but
I'm starting to calm down now. Her bilirubin was 10.8 I guess normal
is .1 to .4. Her white cell count was a whopping 44,000 normal is
16,000. I will definitely ask about the SamE.

I think we got a good omen as we were leaving the vet. My hubby had
met me there after he got off of work as we were turning on to the road
from the vet, I saw him gesturing at the SUV in front of us. I look where
he's pointing this SUV's licence plate says ME A PNUT. Now, what are
the odds of coming out of the vet clinic seeing your cat's name on
someone's license plate? Maybe it seems weird, but I'm considering
ita good sign!

Thank you so much for giving me hope!

2006-09-28 Thread Marylyn

Try Feliway and a concentrated catnip + Rescue
Remedy (for both of you) and cover the carrier but be careful not to let the cat
get too hot. Put a pillow or towel inside the carrier so the cat does not
bounce around as much. The Royal Princess Kitty Katt hid herself under her
towels and overheated big time. Luckily we were on the way to
the vet's and I had ice with me. It was a cool day too--low 70's.

I have the same problem when
taking the cats to the vet. I’ve
found that each cat is different.
  Montana (an older
cat) hates the car but prefers to be allowed to sit on the passenger side
floor. (But before you try this
for the whole trip, I recommend driving around the neighborhood or a parking
lot just in case your cat freaks out and distracts you – that can be a
disaster! Best if you have a
friend go along just in case.)
Montana does OK but he drools and poops – it’s a sure way to get a
stool sample, though not the most pleasant on the olfactory nerve. My other cat, Karma, prefers the
security of the cat carrier, though she cries the entire way to the vet. For very long trips I get drugs from
the vet (for the cat, not me) to help them relax. Scoter only had one trip so far, and
he did OK in the carrier. I’ve
never tried drugs for short trips because I don’t want anything to affect the
results of the physical more than the ride in the car already does, but
perhaps I’ll give them a little catnip next time and see if it helps.

There are some nice carriers made for dogs that are
soft sided (metal covered with a fabric). I got one for the Royal Princess
Kitty Katt. She absolutely hated the plastic carriers. They are sort
of awkward to carry (no handles) but narrow enough you can reach around.

him -- boughtone advertised as such but when I picked it upthe

Dixie travels with me all the time (never camping though). Be very careful
that no one lets her out. Cats are sneaky and they are bear bait. Try my
old standbys--Feliway and concentrated catnip + Rescue Remedy to calm her.
You may want to put a sheet over the cage while you are traveling and when
you are not with her.

It sounds a lot better than leaving her at an unattended vet's.

I know this is off the subject but I was wanting to
get some opinions on traveling with a cat. We are
going camping this weekend in the Smoky Mountains in a
pop up camper. My diabetic cat, Katie, will not allow
anybody in our family to give her the insulin shots
except myself and my husband. So if we go anywhere
most of the time we have to board her which I hate. I
worry about her the whole time and she doesn't eat
good there. The vet leaves at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and
11:30 a.m. on Saturday. If anything happend to her
there probably wouldn't be anybody there. So, I have
decided to take her with us. I have a cage she can
stay in inside the camper. I will not let her outside
any up there. I figured she would be stressed and in
a cage if I boarded her. She would feel better being
with me. My mom will feed all our other animals. Do
you guys think that would be O.K. Sorry this was so
long.

I would just be sure the cage was in the least noisy area of the moving
vehicle - away from the motor/engine and anything that makes noise.

that sounds like an elegant solution - you'll be able to cover the cage
with a mommy or daddy smelling blanket so she'll have a safe cave and
she'll get some great sight-seeing:)

name). If he doesn't recommend it... I will give you a website you
can order 100mg SamE... I swear by that stuff. If you have any
questions or when you get Peanut home please feel free to email me... I
will give you my number too if you want to call. I really think the
key is feeding A LOT of small meals... and SamE... good luck, my thoughts
and prayers are with you and your husband and Peanut

RE: lump from injection site - dangerous?

2006-09-28 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
Thank you so very much for your response...I apologize if it was not
clear, but Dharma has been diagnosed with FIP a couple of weeks ago, as
lump on her neck sounds as threatening as it can be, right now,
treatment for her FIP has to come first. I lost two of my babies Naomi
and Peter in August and have seen how quickly this disease progresses.
And FIP is stress reduced disease, and I have to minimize the stress I
am giving it to her, which include a trip to the vet.. even if it is a
cancer, I cannot let her go through the surgery, she is only 5 months
old and she only weighs 3.14 lb -- and there is no way that I am going
to let her go through the stress..

And my gut feeling is that it is NOT cancer.. if it came from
injections, it's too soon to develop (it has been only less than 10 days
after her fluid and vitamin injections).. I don't know what it is, but
it's definitely not getting bigger,, and again, right now, it's
secondary problem to me.. I just need to deal with this FIP first...

Again, thank you so very much -- I really appreciate your information
and will keep in my hand..

Hideyo,

Any new tumor and/or growth mass that suddenly
apprears on the body should not be taken lightly.

Feline tumors, whether it is a malignant/benign
fibrosarcoma or just a fatty subcutaneous cyst, should
be evaluated immediately via practicing, licensed,
board certified veterinarian whould is experienced,
skilled and proficient with feline sarcomas.

The good news is that Dharma may not have a
fibrosacoma at all. The lump could just be a simple
cyst that needs to be drained. A needle biopsy can
confirm that.

The veterinarian will insert a needle into the core of
the tumor, which is attached to an empty syringe, and
if the lump is indeed a cyct, he/she will extract
fluid; however, if no fluid appears, then it is most
likely a fibrosarcoma.

Regardless, if the fluid was successfully drained, the
sample should be sent to pathology for a
histopathology report to rule out possible cancer
cells.

The bad news is that fibrosarcomas are highly
malignant tumors. They can occur for no apparent
reason and, in some cases, can occur as a form of
vaccine reaction at vaccination sites; more commonly
known as Feline Vaccine-Associated Sacoma (FVAS).
Obviously, this is a serious side effect when
vaccinations are implicated as the cause.

Fibrosarcomas generally do not appear to be painful.
They progress fairly slowly in most cases, but it is
best to remove them as soon as possible due to the
difficulty in getting enough tissue around the margins
as the tumor grows in size.

Once Dharma has been seen by your local and trusted
veterinarian and a preoperative biopsy has been
completed (some veterinaians will perform a
preoperatinve biopsy prior to amputation surgery, some
won't) removal of the mass is usually the next step.
It is just a personal preference on how comfortable
your veterinarain feels about performing the operation
on an individual case via case base.

Surgery for vaccine-related sarcomas works about 50%
of the time. It works a lot better if a biopsy is done
prior to the first surgery so that the
surgeon knows that this is a fibrosarcoma from the
onset.

In that case, a surgeon who is familar with surgery
for aggressive cancers should be consulted and should
perform the surgery.

Again, there is some chance that your veterinarian may
feel comfortable enough about removing the tumor
his/her own self, but most general practitioners do
not. Dharma will just have to be examed by your
veterinarian an evaluated on individual case via case
base. If your veterinarain will perform the operation,
great; if not, Dharma will have to be referred to a
surgical specialist.

Nevertheless, removal of the fibrosarcoma has to be
done very aggressively due to their high metastasize
rate. These tumors are often malignant and it is not
uncommon for the cancer to spread to other regions of
the body, usually the nose cavity, chest and lungs.
Metastasis to other organs can be very difficult to
detect without the assistance of a MRI or CT imaging.

This is why is it extremely important to do a WIDE
surgical excision that has a wide surgical margin (at
least an inch in every direction is necessary when
removing the tumor in order to prevent metastasis.)

Since an inch below these tumors often includes the
bones of the spine there is a strong tendency among
veterinarians not to be this aggressive. This is why
very few vets will perform the amputation operation on
the presumption that a fibrosarcoma is present.

There is good evidence to suggest that the wide
surgical procedure has the best chance at getting all
of the tumor so it is important to plan this surgery
well.

Due to this, seeing an oncologist first may be best

have dry FIP a couple of weeks ago.. and she has been treated with feline
interferon. Over the course of weeks, she has good days and not so good
days, now she really does not have an appetite much and I have been syringe
feeding her.. I talked to jasmine, my AC and she mentioned to me yesterday
that.. symbolically, there seems to be a big war going on between the virus and
Dharma in her body the virus seems to be stronger, but Dharma seems to
be even stronger, and right now she is winning the battle and but taking a lot
of energy from her ---

Everyone, please picture my Dharma - she is 5 months old
and has a tiny body, has beautiful medium hair, and she is a calico girl
please imagine or picture her protected or covered by white beam of light to
her its supposed to help her energy.. if you could imagine my
Dharma getting many stream of white (sort of opaque, not clear and not solid
white) lights and protected by the lights,, I will be so grateful if you could
do this as often as you can,, or pray in words that she will be protected by angels
and protected by these white beam of lights.. I really could use a lot of
healing energy. This virus is very mean and stubborn and I could use all of
your healing wish and positive energy

I lost my dearest Naomi (Dharmas sister) and Peter in

Thank you thank you thank you.

My girls go for their second booster on September 26. Gunnar is having
his first IFA test on December 1.

So you think TWO WEEKS after the last booster and Gunnar can join the
family?? That is so wonderful to hear! He's a sweetie and I can't
wait for him to be a part of us - learning the routines, teaching us
stuff he knows and just being a family together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your encouraging words,
your knowledge and your love.

P.S. Can anyone tell me how I can change my email address for this
chat site??

optimistic, truthful and knowledgeable answer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you I will reschedule Gunnar's
appointment for 120 days from August 3. Instead of re-testing with the
ELISA, I will have the IFA test done. That is correct??

And if, God forbid, the IFA is positive after 120 days, how many more
days would you recommend I wait before I retest again??

And are you guys okay with mixing?? My girls are 16 and almost 8.
Gunnar is 1-1/2 or 2. The girls are in the process of being
vaccinated.
I'm sure they won't be grooming each other, so all I need to do is
keep
the litter box clean and worry about the food/water bowls. I can pick
up breakfast/lunch/dinner dishes immediately after meals, but what's
the
best route to take regarding the water bowl? And I guess I would clean
the litter box in the morning and when I get home each night from work.

Does this sound like a safe plan? Any other suggestions would be
appreciated.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your advice and
words of wisdom. You've made a nervous sister to three cats a more
calmer person. Like I told our vet, who said don't count on it when
I told her we were literally praying to throw the virus, I trust and
believe more in what I read on this site than I would the vet's office.

You guys have been there, done that. And you've got love, which is

God bless all of you and your kitties!!

retest using the IFA at a minimum of 90 days--i go for 120 days since
most
times it takes between three and four months to clear the virus--so
unless
you are absolutely sure that he couldn't have been in contact with an
infected cat that entire amount, better to wait.

statistically, 70% of those originally tested positive on the ELISA
will
test negative on the IFA--if you do not test too soon. as belinda
says,
even
if an IFA is positive after 90-120 days, it's still not a
definite--the
virus can still clear itself.

This is exactly why I keep trying to get people to understand
there is NO test that absolutely diagnosis FIP, once a vet
say's it's FIP most people don't question it and and the vet say's
nothing can be done. MANY, many cats diagnosed with FIP die from
something else that was almost always treatable. Most people don't
have a necropsy done and I hate it when they go around saying their cat
died from FIP with NO proof. This disease is worse than FeLV or FIV
put together because it is still so misunderstood and cats are dying
from a mis diagnosis of this all the time.

Off my soap box now :)

I lost her on 7/18/06, a day before our
wedding anniversary,
but it wasn't because of FIP, it was heartworms. I still blame the vet

Re: Prayers for my Dharma -- Please!!!

2006-09-28 Thread Ioana-Dina Rican
It is exactly what blowed our minds; giving us all the crap in the world about her testing positive for corona virus, simpthoms, blah blah blah and that the actual test for FIP is as necropsy. Just my common sense was telling me that when a cat hears your voice from across the hall and then licks your hand the only movements she was making during her stay there it meant for me that she needs me and she wants to get better for me. So I gave her the love in the world to make her eat so I could take her home. I got your other email appologizing; do not worry about a thing. I am pretty rested today, so I didn't take it personal:) But you are right about necropsy; I felt too that I had to know why she died, especially when it was a sudden death. After we left her home in the morning playing and doing her usual, we came home to find her dead in the middle of the floor. It was one of the shocks of my
life. Unfortunately we had no much time with her to mourn because the vet was closing within an hour, could not keep her dead over the night being too hot, and in the same moment we got out of the house Lola came in our way to feed her. So we took Lola too to be spayed. And here I was after two days, mourning for Bolo and pulling my hair our because Lola's test came positive and again I was fed again crap from the vet. I am telling you, I am not lucky to have good vet, I cannot aford to go around and look for one, Lola doesn't travel not even several feet outside the house without pooping very bad on her, so I don't want to stress her. We tried to find her a one-cat household or somebody with another positive cat, but everything we found was a rescue refugee in Virginia that accepted her. Well, after an email from tonya we took the chance to introduce her to our other two brats. Our situation is a little bit more complicated
because we are just temporary in US. We are working inobtaining the permanent residency, but if we will be denied I will need to find homes for them. Until then we pray for the best and we'll figure out something when it comes to it.Ioana Belinda [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is exactly why I keep trying to get people to understand there is NO test that absolutely diagnosis FIP, once a vet say's it's FIP most people don't question it and and the vet say's nothing can be done. Re: Beware of people offering to send meds!

2006-09-28 Thread Lernermichelle

oh, I am sorry I sent that email now, because the meds did arrive right afterwards! And the woman wrote why it took so long, because she has been going through a whole lot of medical crises at her house. So I feel bad I wrote the warning email to the group. It had just been so long that I thought something else was happening.

I am sooo sorry that person would do that to you. If she did scam you for the $20 then SHAME ON HER!! Some people are so greedy and insensitive...they prey on people that are dealing with a sick person/animal and dupe them. I dont give my Crackers any meds but if I did I would send them also right to you ASAPfor free. Your advice you have kindly given to me and others could never be paid back. I am so sorry.
much love
kayte and crackers
P.S.
If the person who did this to Michele is reading these posts send the girl her money back. That is a disgusting thing to do.

Thanks everyone for the kind wishes and prayers to light Petes way to the bridge. I am still in shock over losing him. He has always been my strong sturdy boy and it seems as if he became weak over night and in a few days he was gone. His best friend Charlie Brown is grieving so and his brother Dooley is not acting like himself. I'm so afraid of losing another so soon. To top it all the little sick Kitty that was abandoned has disappeared and I fear the worst for him. I tried to trap him but he was to smart or to sick for the food bait.
Pete was diagnosed with felv when he was 5 years. He probably was positive before but was never checked. He was so sweet and healthy until the last days. I'll miss him very much.

The warning was valid even if circumstances changed. I still don't
understand the $20. I thought that particular drug was very
inexpensive. Maybe I have my drugs mixed up.
