on the other paw, nina (that phrase is how you can tell i'm a
libra)--sometimes i think we judge a cat's comfort needs in our
terms rather than in theirs. WE may not want to live in one room, but
for someone who's never known regular shelter, food, care,
warmth--perhaps it IS enough for them.
oh, heavens, yes, chris--not only that, but to a great degree, all FIV
really seems to do is make cats big, lazy and couch-potatoes...
seriously--from the experiences at the FIV/FeLV sanctuary, the
HEALTHIEST population--including the owner-surrenders, strays and
ferals, were the FIVs.

part of the problem is that we don't know anything about these guys'

what diseases/illnesses they've had before, what genetic problems they
are carrying around etc. so it's hard to know which is their past and

karolyn, there is no credible evidence at this point that FIV passes
in ANY way other than DEEP, PENETRATING bites--certainly not by
licking! it has to be blood to blood, and even rough play bites do not
seem to be a problem. remember that FIV+ generally passes during
serious male to male fights
um, let me rephrase that one sentence: so that any bite inflicted
will not be deep enough to pass the virus. (sometimes i wonder if
meow was my first language, explaining my increasing inability to
write a complete sentence)
MC
dumb question, probably, but can this be used in non-positive cats as
well with high wbc/lymphocytes? i have a friend in california with a
kitty they can't figure out what is happening with, tho all the normal

yep, any GOOD greyhound rescue pre-tests because it's such a big
issue. one friend has greys who LOVES her cats, and ANY cats,
actually--loves to clean out their ears. greys are good if you
have horses, too--easy to exercise!
bottom line seems to be that ANY cat that tests positive for FeLV
needs to be retested in 90 days the problem, of course, is that
what rescue/shelter has the holding capacity for this
i've been thinking about this for awhile--whether folks with confirmed

nina, GREAT reminder about the medical model that infects human and veterinary medicine:
diagnose-medicate-cure-dismiss.
chronic illnesses short-circuit this simple plan. not only are
patients/guardians blamed when there is no cure, but once a single
diagnosis is made, most of the time ANYTHING
well, this is where we have to get the science people in if a cat
tests positive, it means it's been exposed to the virus. i would THINK
that if it's gonna be able to throw the virus off (develop an immunity
to the virus), it's gonna do that anyway. ie, if it's a healthy cat to

um, if something is easy, it's not a problem, is it? evil kitty grin
it can be both, actually--starting out as an allergic reaction, then
hanging on as a behavioral pattern (is ANYTHING simple?)
i think that is the best we can do--at times at the sanctuary, as all
the info swirled around re: which tests do what, when they work, if
they work, what they test for, how often they need to be repeated, is
PCR the answer, is the IFA the best, the director wondered if there was

there's a chewable baytril, too, that some cats seem to like a lot
i've solved it a different way--i use house-call vets! (that way, it's only the vet who needs any tranquilizing)
