Obviously it may be that nothing will work for Bella, but I suggest the 
Winstrol because there is very little downside risk. I am a firm believer in 
the Winstrol because I can’t tell you the number of times I have been told that 
a particular condition cannot be treated (and I have confirmed it on line 
through my own research) and the Winstrol has come through. If for nothing else 
but an excellent appetite stimulant, I find that when I get the cats on 
Winstrol and they start to feel better and to eat, then obviously they are in a 
better condition to fight the problem. However, I was a medical laboratory 
technologist and have a very strong scientific background, so I also studied 
the effects of the Winstrol through the blood work we regularly did on our 
cats. You could literally see the changes in the blood work, week to week, and 
it made a believer out of our vets as well. After all, it wasn’t then just me 
saying I thought they looked better. The blood work clearly demonstrated the 
effect that the medication was having.
 
With Zander, when I would taper off the Winstrol, his red cell production would 
begin to fall. Thankfully, the red cell numbers usually stayed within the 
normal  range, though low, but we would check his gums and the pads of his feet 
and I would put him back on the Winstrol if I noticed him getting pale. Once 
back on the Winstrol, we would get the bump up we needed in his blood work, and 
we just kept going with this cycle.
 
That doesn’t mean it will work for Bella, but I doubt it can hurt to try. The 
pills I get are very small so they are easy to get down a cat’s throat. Also, 
because of what I saw as a pretty quick effect, I could usually notice a 
difference in a few days.

Last year I gave her the VIRBAGEN OMEGA
All her blood work was perfect .

See my email regarding use of Winstrol. I tried LTCI injections on our little 
boy, while monitoring him extremely closely with weekly blood work. The LTCI 
did absolutely nothing for him, though we tried it for at least six months. As 
soon as I put him on the Winstrol, and again, running weekly blood work, his 
red blood cell numbers began to climb – and I mean within days of starting the 
medication. They continued to climb, as did his platelets which had also been 
running low. His reticulocyte count (measuring new red cell production) also 
went up, and it had been at almost zero for more than 8 months before the 
Winstrol. We had given him several blood transfusions because he just wasn’t 
producing any red cells himself.

We are hanging in there. My 2.5 year old, Jazz just went for his annual check 
up and weighed in at 13.5 lbs! He's quite healthy. My 12-13 yr old cat Krammer 
used to weight that much but has lost 2 lbs since May unfortunately, and is now 
down to 9.5 lbs. He is on a low dose of Prednisolone to stimulate appetite. I'm 
debating whether to buy more LTCI injections - he's had them monthly for the 
past 2 years but they're just so costly and hard to measure if they actually do 
anything.  Sigh.

I am sorry if I sound so negative on modern medicine, but have had some bad 
experiences and it leaves me a bit suspicious of modern medicine.  I have had a 
lot of luck with alternatives in cleaning up the side effects of it using an 
alternative salve and tonic.

The problem with doctors is that they do not have faith to try something  
different.  We are finding out that pharmaceutical companies lie about their 
products, why else wold we have a rash of attorneys asking did you take this or 
that, we can get you lots of money.  Doctors and hospitals will refuse to treat 
a patient (my mother) if they find out they are on alternative therapy and 
meds.  My mother would have been removed from the hospital and she and I would 
have been arrested for practicing without a license.  Yet, when they did a 
biopsy on her lungs and kidneys they were amazed that she healed so quickly, 
had no bedsores after a month in bed.  They could not understand it but our 
primary did.  We had told him what vitamins she was taking and the exercises 
she did while lying there.  They are so brainwashed by big pharmacy and 
promised a set of gold plated golf clubs, etc.

As for the FELV, my Annie was diagnosed at the age of 4 and is now 8, healthy, 
sassy.

When I had lymphoma, the last chemo shut down my red blood cellproduction.  The 
dr. stopped it and again said 3 months.  I was on 27 vitamins and minerals from 
my chiropractor.  Took the pills 3 times a day.  After a year of that and 
prayer for everyone I knew, I went into remission.  None of these things ever 
hurt and some time they can be the thing that saves you.  You just have to be 
positive and have faith.  
Most of the tchemos the drs provide and radiation have so many side effects 
that you have to take more meds to counteract the side effects.  I will stick 
with alternative medications and my oncologist has agreed to moniter me if it 
comes back.

So far Annie, Homey, Harley and Dee are all doing well.  I am the one having 
problems like vertigo.  Sort of hard to bend over and clean 4 boxes, but I am 
managing.  Ginger, turmeric, honey and lemon juice tea is helpinhg me manage 
it.

I had lymphoma in 2000.  Four courses of chemo did not good.  back to 3 months. 
 Then I went into spontaneous remission and have been there now going on 10 
years,  Mine was all over my skin, head to foot and in my lungs.  None of the 
chemos did any good so says my oncologist.  I am positive that prayer and 
vitamins did the job.  So I will keep you on my prayer list.

We are hanging in there. My 2.5 year old, Jazz just went for his annual
check up and weighed in at 13.5 lbs! He's quite healthy. My 12-13 yr old
cat Krammer used to weight that much but has lost 2 lbs since May
unfortunately, and is now down to 9.5 lbs. He is on a low dose of
Prednisolone to stimulate appetite. I'm debating whether to buy more LTCI
injections - he's had them monthly for the past 2 years but they're just so
costly and hard to measure if they actually do anything.  Sigh.

So sorry. 
One of my non-Leuk kitties is about 20 and we are looking at winding down 
ourselves for the Big Man (not so big any more). He is hyperthyroid and his 
meds have advanced his CRF, and he has heart issues. No heroics... tried that 
on my darling Buff and will never forgive myself. 
Our plan now is for his maximum comfort and life quality, as hard as it is for 
us. 
It's very hard... but I do recommend the same path. For you and for Bella.

See my email regarding use of Winstrol. I tried LTCI injections on our little 
boy, while monitoring him extremely closely with weekly blood work. The LTCI 
did absolutely nothing for him, though we tried it for at least six months. As 
soon as I put him on the Winstrol, and again, running weekly blood work, his 
red blood cell numbers began to climb – and I mean within days of starting the 
medication. They continued to climb, as did his platelets which had also been 
running low. His reticulocyte count (measuring new red cell production) also 
went up, and it had been at almost zero for more than 8 months before the 
Winstrol. We had given him several blood transfusions because he just wasn’t 
producing any red cells himself.

Obviously it may be that nothing will work for Bella, but I suggest the 
Winstrol because there is very little downside risk. I am a firm believer in 
the Winstrol because I can't tell you the number of times I have been told that 
a particular condition cannot be treated (and I have confirmed it on line 
through my own research) and the Winstrol has come through. If for nothing else 
but an excellent appetite stimulant, I find that when I get the cats on 
Winstrol and they start to feel better and to eat, then obviously they are in a 
better condition to fight the problem. However, I was a medical laboratory 
technologist and have a very strong scientific background, so I also studied 
the effects of the Winstrol through the blood work we regularly did on our 
cats. You could literally see the changes in the blood work, week to week, and 
it made a believer out of our vets as well. After all, it wasn't then just me 
saying I thought they looked better. The blood work clearly demonstrated the 
effect that the medication was having.

With Zander, when I would taper off the Winstrol, his red cell production would 
begin to fall. Thankfully, the red cell numbers usually stayed within the 
normal range, though low, but we would check his gums and the pads of his feet 
and I would put him back on the Winstrol if I noticed him getting pale. Once 
back on the Winstrol, we would get the bump up we needed in his blood work, and 
we just kept going with this cycle.

That doesn't mean it will work for Bella, but I doubt it can hurt to try. The 
pills I get are very small so they are easy to get down a cat's throat. Also, 
because of what I saw as a pretty quick effect, I could usually notice a 
difference in a few days.

did absolutely nothing for him, though we tried it for at least six months. As 
soon as I put him on the Winstrol, and again, running weekly blood work, his 
red blood cell numbers began to climb - and I mean within days of starting the 
medication. They continued to climb, as did his platelets which had also been 
running low. His reticulocyte count (measuring new red cell production) also 
went up, and it had been at almost zero for more than 8 months before the 
Winstrol. We had given him several blood transfusions because he just wasn't 
producing any red cells himself.

We are hanging in there. My 2.5 year old, Jazz just went for his annual check 
up and weighed in at 13.5 lbs! He's quite healthy. My 12-13 yr old cat Krammer 
used to weight that much but has lost 2 lbs since May unfortunately, and is now 
down to 9.5 lbs. He is on a low dose of Prednisolone to stimulate appetite. I'm 
debating whether to buy more LTCI injections - he's had them monthly for the 
past 2 years but they're just so costly and hard to measure if they actually do 
anything.  Sigh.

That’s exactly what it does. In humans, it is also given to treat severe non 
responsive genetic anemia. However, it is an anabolic steroid which athletes 
use, so it is also excellent to build muscle mass in cats that are wasting and 
as I mentioned, it is a superb appetite stimulant.

Quite unfortunately in my opinion, it got a bad reputation because (a) athletes 
abuse it and (b) there was this observation in the vet world that it caused 
liver damage. When our beautiful little Zander had his miraculous turn-around, 
I waited a full year to contact the internal medicine specialist who had seen 
in him in the ER clinic and had administered blood transfusions to Zander. That 
vet and everyone else had told us that there was nothing else that could be 
done when Zander reacted to the second blood transfusion, and we were told a 
third transfusion would likely kill him as he had now developed antibodies to 
the foreign red cells. When I called this vet to tell him of Zander’s amazing 
turn-around and the fact that Zander was actually still alive and doing very 
well after a year, the internist said to me that I had “gone old school” in 
using the Winstrol. When I asked him what he meant, he explained that they used 
to use Winstrol all the time for leukemia and a host of other conditions in 
cats, but they had stopped when some talk at some vet conference suggested that 
it might cause liver damage. I explained that we had followed Zander’s blood 
work closely, and while we did see a rise in some liver enzymes eventually, 
they went back to normal after tapering the medication, and there were no 
lasting problems with the liver. We have now seen this in several other cats 
with other conditions like sarcoma, FIP, etc. We have had good response to the 
Winstrol in almost every scenario we have tried it (and we always take the

I know I sound like a broken record, but go get some Winstrol (Stanazalol) from 
your vet. 1 mg 2 x a day or a 2 mg tablet daily. I have had miraculous results 
with it for leukemia, sarcoma, and a host of other conditions I have 
encountered in the cats I have looked after. It is also a very effective 
appetite stimulant, makes them feel much better and therefore lifts their 
spirits and gets them moving about and even playing. It can be given with 
prednisone or prednisolone, and in fact, works well with it. The only side 
effect I have seen is a temporary rise in liver enzymes, but these subside 
quickly once the drug is discontinued and the drug has yet to cause any 
permanent liver damage (though this is the reason, allegedly, that vets stopped 
using this drug).

I am new to this group and never posted but now that I see some activity I
was hoping to jump in a little and maybe get some opinions on my
situation.My name is Jenn and my adventure started in August. I will make
it brief as I can. We adopted 3 kitties from our vet earlier this year,
shortly after putting down our precious calico from cancer. The 3 kitting
were all tested, given shots, spayed/neutered etc. Everything was great but
the runt started to lick cement from the fireplace hearth in early August.
I called a vet at the practice I go to and they said it didn't mean
anything but I could bring her in if I wanted. I decided against it but
noticed her sleeping more and just not moving much. Finally I said I can't
take it anymore and took her to my favorite vet (especially because her
gums were so pale - something i learned with my other cat) and her PCV was
at 12%. Next thing I know I am taking her a blood transfusion. She went
from testing negative for Felv, testing positive and then negative. We also
had IFA's done at two different labs and one was negative and one was
positive. She had a bone marrow biopsy (and needed another blood
transfusion) and the IFA from that was negative. No cancer or anything was
found. Basically, we may never know if she truly has it and her system will
be able to clear it but it was not in her bone marrow so she has a fighting
chance. The diagnosis is that it is an auto-immune non-regenerative anemia.
She just finished two different antibiotics and her pred was upped to 10 mg
twice a day. Her last blood work which was last week shows that she is not
anemic, her platelets are increasing but her neutrophils have taken a dive.
They are not as low as when this first started but they did improve. My vet
and the specialist was against trying LTCI as they were no studies to back
up the claims. Right now she is doing great, not running any fevers. I was
told that if she is truly Felv infected or this is just autoimmune then the
treatment would be the same. Her brother and sister have tested negative
and are thriving and all three were dropped off at the vet the same time.

Any thought or questions I might be asking? Any treatment options I may not
have researched to death? I am so sorry we are having to deal with this for
our poor babies.

Talk to your vet. My vets order it specially from a compounding pharmacy called 
Chiron I believe. It can certainly be ordered online but I think that what is 
being offered online is at higher doses for humans, and the pills can be very 
large. I have never tried to order the medication online so I don’t know if it 
can be done or not. My vet has always been good enough to order it for me from 
the compounding pharmacy.

Obviously it may be that nothing will work for Bella, but I suggest the 
Winstrol because there is very little downside risk. I am a firm believer in 
the Winstrol because I can’t tell you the number of times I have been told that 
a particular condition cannot be treated (and I have confirmed it on line 
through my own research) and the Winstrol has come through. If for nothing else 
but an excellent appetite stimulant, I find that when I get the cats on 
Winstrol and they start to feel better and to eat, then obviously they are in a 
better condition to fight the problem. However, I was a medical laboratory 
technologist and have a very strong scientific background, so I also studied 
the effects of the Winstrol through the blood work we regularly did on our 
cats. You could literally see the changes in the blood work, week to week, and 
it made a believer out of our vets as well. After all, it wasn’t then just me 
saying I thought they looked better. The blood work clearly demonstrated the 
effect that the medication was having.

With Zander, when I would taper off the Winstrol, his red cell production would 
begin to fall. Thankfully, the red cell numbers usually stayed within the 
normal range, though low, but we would check his gums and the pads of his feet 
and I would put him back on the Winstrol if I noticed him getting pale. Once 
back on the Winstrol, we would get the bump up we needed in his blood work, and 
we just kept going with this cycle.

That doesn’t mean it will work for Bella, but I doubt it can hurt to try. The 
pills I get are very small so they are easy to get down a cat’s throat. Also, 
because of what I saw as a pretty quick effect, I could usually notice a 
difference in a few days.

See my email regarding use of Winstrol. I tried LTCI injections on our little 
boy, while monitoring him extremely closely with weekly blood work. The LTCI 
did absolutely nothing for him, though we tried it for at least six months. As 
soon as I put him on the Winstrol, and again, running weekly blood work, his 
red blood cell numbers began to climb – and I mean within days of starting the 
medication. They continued to climb, as did his platelets which had also been 
running low. His reticulocyte count (measuring new red cell production) also 
went up, and it had been at almost zero for more than 8 months before the 
Winstrol. We had given him several blood transfusions because he just wasn’t 
producing any red cells himself.

So sorry to hear about downturns for Bella and Krammer.

Brock is doing well with 2 terminal illnesses - can't tell by looking at 
him!  One being FeLV and the other being Restrictive Cardiomyopathy.  
His FeLV has thankfully been dormant so I can focus on the heart issue.  
5 heart meds and 2 supplements.  It's been 5 months since the RCM 
diagnosis, which is a pretty good stretch for that (average survival 2-6 
months, with only 20% making it past a year).  He still catches mice 
that get in the garage.  Maybe the mouse meat is the key!  LOL.  He gets 
canned cat food and a few crunchies, and I give K/D for one meal out of 
three, to help his kidneys.  He has K/D kibble available all the time, 
but only occasionally eats it.  Crea/BUN are teetering on the upper edge 
of normal, sometimes going a little over.

My Zander had exactly the same symptoms you observed – licking cement and very 
pale gums. His PCV was 5% before I started him on Stanozolol. My first sign 
that the medication might be working was an ever so slight blush on his ivory 
pale gums. I didn’t dare to believe it until I took him to the vets that 
weekend and confirmed his red cells and PCV was up for the first time since the 
terrible ordeal had begun.

Quite unfortunately in my opinion, it got a bad reputation because (a) athletes 
abuse it and (b) there was this observation in the vet world that it caused 
liver damage. When our beautiful little Zander had his miraculous turn-around, 
I waited a full year to contact the internal medicine specialist who had seen 
in him in the ER clinic and had administered blood transfusions to Zander. That 
vet and everyone else had told us that there was nothing else that could be 
done when Zander reacted to the second blood transfusion, and we were told a 
third transfusion would likely kill him as he had now developed antibodies to 
the foreign red cells. When I called this vet to tell him of Zander’s amazing 
turn-around and the fact that Zander was actually still alive and doing very 
well after a year, the internist said to me that I had “gone old school” in 
using the Winstrol. When I asked him what he meant, he explained that they used 
to use Winstrol all the time for leukemia and a host of other conditions in 
cats, but they had stopped when some talk at some vet conference suggested that 
it might cause liver damage. I explained that we had followed Zander’s blood 
work closely, and while we did see a rise in some liver enzymes eventually, 
they went back to normal after tapering the medication, and there were no 
lasting problems with the liver. We have now seen this in several other cats 
with other conditions like sarcoma, FIP, etc. We have had good response to the 
Winstrol in almost every scenario we have tried it (and we always take the 
sickest of the sickest cats to look after), and occasionally we seek a spike in 
liver enzymes but it doesn’t affect the cats and it disappears with no lasting 
effect on the liver.

We are hanging in there. My 2.5 year old, Jazz just went for his annual check 
up and weighed in at 13.5 lbs! He's quite healthy. My 12-13 yr old cat Krammer 
used to weight that much but has lost 2 lbs since May unfortunately, and is now 
down to 9.5 lbs. He is on a low dose of Prednisolone to stimulate appetite. I'm 
debating whether to buy more LTCI injections - he's had them monthly for the

Well, I'm not a big fan of testing any more. My poor Bunny was tested
when she was brought to me and was positive for FeLv. I kept her more
than the required time, retested and she was negative. We all cheered.
She lived with me a little under a year from then. She came as an 8
month old teen, was spayed and given the rabies vaccine. Stayed healthy
after her retest until October of this year. Then she just faded. She
stopped playing, stopped being a silly nuisance to Delilah and Samson
and finally stopped eating. I took her to the vet because I noticed her
gums looked pale. Not flea anemia. He retested her and she was positive
for FeLv. He explained that maybe the first test was a false negative
or maybe the virus was lurking in the bone marrow as well as the
regular place in the blood. He gave her a vitamin shot, gave her
anti-biotic shot and she seemed to rally for a couple of days, ate a
bit, then on Oct. 31 she just lay down in the bed I made for her on the
floor and passed away. So, tests are just that - tests but they are not
crystal balls and can't predict what will happen to a cat in the future
when it comes to FeLv. Bunny would have been two years old in April,
2014. On the other hand, Moses, who overcame the positive FeLv
diagnosis and turned negative, is still with me after 7 years.

We had a kitty that showed up in the backyard a few years
back so we trapped her and had her fixed and vaccinated and named her SuzieQ.  
Soon a male showed up so we got him all fixed
up.  Well, SuzieQ became more and more
friendly but we didn't want to leave Charlie outside alone and they were very
bonded so we built them a nice insulated, elevated house with a deck and
feeding area.  One day Charlie went
missing so we brought SuzieQ inside. 
Everything went well for almost a year until she started losing a lot of
weight.  After an ultrasound, the vet
recommended surgery to biopsy the mass in her abdomen.  It came back as a very 
aggressive form of cancer
that is common in cats with FeLuk.  She
tested negative but Dr. McCann said that she may have been exposed and fought
off the virus as a kitten but by then it was too late, the virus had done it's
damage and within 3 weeks of her diagnosis, she was gone. 
So, I guess what I am saying here is any cat that has been
exposed to Leukemia, even if they don't have it, runs the risk of getting one
or more of the cancers associated with the disease.  Not that they all will, 
but there is that
risk.  But then again, life expectancy is
fluid; we never know when our number is up. 
We lost a sweet kitty at five and a half years old and he didn't have
Leukemia or FIV, he was just a very sickly kitten and his body finally gave
out.  Cats, like people, die at different
ages and all we can do is embrace life, love them and care for them while they
are here and hold them forever in our hearts when they are gone.

After the long discussion that I just got on testing, I am really confused and 
concerned.  I have a group of 6---one senior and the others a year old.  It was 
suspected that they were exposed to a cat with feline leukemia so I had them 
tested.  All but the one year old female tested positive on the Elsa---I 
believe it was that---did not really ask but it was a test done in the vet 
office in about 15 0r 20 minutes.  I moved them all indoors and got heaters and 
airconditioning for my garage (where they live), treated them aggressively, fed 
them more and better, and tried to reduce their stress as much as possible with 
climbers toys attention and love.   One did not make it after a month, but he 
was the sickest and kept separate from the start in the garage-the negative 
female has been kept in
 the garage, but separate as well.  Anyway 3 months later the remaining 5 all 
tested negative on the same test by same vet.  We were feeling very happy and 
hopeful.  We plan to have them retested this week (about 2 months since the 
last test) and were hoping and praying that we once again get a negative test. 
We were thinking that if they were negative a second time, that we would be 
free and clear of this horrible illness and not have to worry about them and 
did not have to worry about keeping them all separate from each other and our 
other inside cats.  But after reading this recent discussion I worry that 
another negative snap test won't mean anything.  Should I have the Elsa test 
done instead or also---if I can come up with the money?  Should I have another 
vet and lab do it?  Do I have to worry about them for the rest of their lives 
that this will pop its ugly head up again in years to come as carriers or

I don't really believe that 72% are false positives.  I think the 
percentages of that are much lower.  I think most of the problems wtih 
the ELISA come from improper handling of the kit.  However, I like most 
of everything else they said in the article.  The ELISA doesn't give you
 the final results.  According to articles I've read and my vet friend, 
the ELISA test looks for small fragments of the virus in the 
blood/saliva/tears or whatever.  It doesn't look for antibodies, it 
looks for small fragments of the virus.  At this point you don't know 
whether the virus has replicated and spread or whether it's progressed 
into the white blood cells.  At this point they could get rid of the 
virus like most cats do.  The cat may not even be contagious at this 
point.  The ELISA is a screening test only.  It's just to let you know 
whether you need to look into this any further.



I do have a very healthy kitten right now that I just took in that 
tested positive on her ELISA.  I just mentioned it yesterday so sorry to
 repeat.  I had a second ELISA test done that is sent to the lab for a 
well test.  It's just like the snap test in the office in that it 
looks for small fragments of the virus but it's performed a different 
way.  That test showed a positive also.  So if you're in rescue I 
definitely think you should test because the disease is out there but 
it's not as common as some think.  My vet friend also said that most 
healthy adult cats can extinguish the virus so I agree with that part of
 the article.  I read that somewhere else in an online article by 
another vet.

says that you don't vaccinate until you get test results.  well, my vet 
thinking the cat was healthy, went ahead and vaccinated, even after I asked if 
we should wait for the results.  so how does this affect this cat including 
future testing? I read somewhere that the vaccination can result in the cat 
testing positive but i can't sort out what is current and what is not.  I can't 
believe a vet would be so careless to recommend testing and then go ahead and 
vaccinate before getting the test results if it affected future test results or 
the health of the cat .  I really appreicate anyone who can add to this 
discussion, either based on info you found , your vets info or your actual 
experience.  I am not feeling too comfortable now about having this kitten

I disagree that cats that are over 16 weeks are virtually immune to the 
disease from my personal experience.  I also know that it is the vaccination 
for FIV that will always show a positive result on a test, but the FeLV 
vaccination does not.

As has already been posted, the FeLV vaccine does not affect future test 
results.   If a cat received the FIV vaccine it will test positive for FIV on 
all future FIV tests.  
 
Getting the FeLV vaccine won't hurt your cat other than the slight risk 
associated with cancer at the vaccine site.  
 
No idea why your vet went ahead with the vaccination before getting the test 
results.  The in house test only takes 10 minutes.

Kittens can sometimes have a false FIV + result.  The FIV portion of the combo 
test looks for FIV antibodies so if the kitten has antibodies from the mother 
still in it's system then the kitten can show positive for FIV.  But waiting a 
little and testing later the kitten will usually show negative because the 
Mom's antibodies will no longer be present.  Other than that I haven't heard of 
too many false positives for FIV.  I'm sure there are and I just haven't looked 
into it.  If those test kits aren't handled properly they can show false 
positives for FeLV so I would think they could for FIV too.

Those are the same tests.  The definitive test is the IFA (has to be sent to 
a lab).  Recommended testing protocol is if the snap and IFA are 
different, test again in 120 days.  Unfortunately for most rescues and 
shelters they don't have a place for keeping possibly positive cats for an 
additional 120 days.  If the snap test was done using the new triple test 
(FIV, FeLV and heartworm) have it done again using the FeLV test only, if 
you can find a vet who has them.  There have been many false positives 
reported with the triple test.

The bone marrow aspiration was suggested by my vet for Ana's cat ONLY to
confirm the regular leukemia - NOT for the Feline Leukemia virus!
I have only had one kitten, years ago, and now two adult cats that are FeLV+
- the kitten was sick all the time, and died at a very early age - Nemo
started having seizures and that was the end of it, but the two adults right
now are in extremely good health.  Natalie

I've lost 9 FeLV kitties and have one survivor at this time.  My vets never
suggested the bone aspiration.  Part of the reason could be cost since the
vet knows I do kitty rescue and sanctuary the sick kitties.

  Bailey has a bone marrow aspirate because we couldn't find any reason 
for his anemia, it showed the virus was active and was destroying his 
new blood as fast as it was being produced and there were precancerous 
cells there, we could never find were the suspected cancer was and after 
he passed and a necropsy was done it was pancreatic cancer.  We put him 
on prednisolone, iron, and epogen and reversed his anemia.  His HCT was 
at 20%, went down to 18% by the time I got the epogen, went to 15% the 
first tow weeks while on it and then started going up.  It got up to 40% 
and we lowered the epogen dose from 3 times a week to once a week.  When 
he passed his HCT was at 33%, normal and he had been on the epogen for 
about 5 months, without it he would have died months before.

You know, I was thinking about that one myself. We rescued Onyx from a pet 
store in Brooklyn In January '06. I say rescued because I had to take her to 
the vet the next day. She had bloody diarrhea (coccidia), she was dehydrated 
and malnourished. Although the pet store owner told me she was 10 weeks old, 
her eyes hadn't changed color yet, so she was more like 6 weeks old. We never 
had her tested (nor did her vet suggest it), I figured a pure-bred cat wouldn't 
be exposed. The vet told me about the pet lemon law that would require the pet 
store to replace the cat or refund my money, but with this little kitten in 
such bad shape, how could I in good conscience give her back to the people who 
treated her so horribly? She recovered from her initial illnesses and has since 
been very healthy.

 Onyx was about a year and eight months old when we got Cinder. we had Cinder 
just over two weeks when she came down with a URI, which Onyx then caught. Onyx 
got pretty sick because the vet who saw Cinder (a referral from the shelter) 
said she didn't need to see Onyx as well - she would just give me enough 
antibiotics for both cats - prescribed the wrong dosage for Onyx (only half of 
what she should have bee getting). I figured out the correct dosage myself 
through research and got her through it. We switched vets after that. In 
hindsight, the surprising thing is that none of the vets Onyx saw ever 
recommended testing her, and none of them ever recommended re-testing Cinder.

Onyx and Cinder were very close, sleeping together and grooming each other. 
Onyx stayed by Cinder's side the night before she died, and didn't eat for 
almost a week after she passed, wandering around looking for her. I have 
wondered if it wasn't Onyx who had it to begin with after all, and the vets 
tell me that it's impossible to know. Looking back, I would think that for Onyx 
to test positive on the IFA without showing any sign of illness would almost 
have to mean she had it first. Doesn't the IFA signal persistent viremia? I can 
only take hope that if that is the case, she may be one of those rare kitties 
who carry the virus without succumbing to it.

My other cats got their booster FeLV shots yesterday. These three don't really 
mix with each other. The closest they get to each other is dinner time, and 
maybe two if them sleeping on opposite sides of my bed. They do occasionally 
chase each other through the house, but no fights or mutual grooming. I do have 
one question though. I have conflicting information about the effect of the 
FeLV vaccine on the Elisa test. One vet told me it the vaccine will effect the 
Elisa test but not the IFA. A person at the ASPCA told me that it effects both 
tests. But I have read here and elsewhere that the vaccine has not effect on 
either test, because the tests look for antigens, not antibodies (which is what 
the vaccine provides). Any clarification on that?

I understand there are two stages of FeLV infection. What are they?

FeLV is present in the blood (a condition called viremia) during two  
different stages of infection:


	•Primary viremia, an early stage of virus infection. During this  
stage some cats are able to mount an effective immune response,  
eliminate the virus from the bloodstream, and halt progression to the  
secondary viremia stage.
	•Secondary viremia, a later stage characterized by persistent  
infection of the bone marrow and other tissue. If FeLV infection  
progresses to this stage it has passed a point of no return: the  
overwhelming majority of cats with secondary viremia will be infected  
for the remainder of their lives.

How is infection diagnosed?

Two types of FeLV blood tests are in common use. Both detect a protein  
component of the virus as it circulates in the bloodstream.


	•ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and similar tests can be  
performed in your veterinarian's office. ELISA-type tests detect both  
primary and secondary stages of viremia.
	•IFA (indirect immunofluorescent antibody assay) tests must be sent  
out to a diagnostic laboratory. IFA tests detect secondary viremia  
only, so the majority of positive-testing cats remain infected for life.

Some low life put an adorable little female kitten in a box that was
taped shut.  I rescue and TNR cats, so I have her now and I'm trying
very hard not to fall madly in love with her, but it's not easy :-) 

I have to find a forever home for her because I have 14 cats at home
now and I just can't keep anymore.  This little kitten appears very
healthy, but I must have her tested if I let her out of my spare room
and in with my other cats before I adopt her out.  Would a snap test 
be reliable at her age, or iffy?

I adopted my Cinder at 9 weeks, and she tested negative at that time. On 
January 12 of this year, at one year and 8 months, she crossed to the bridge 
after she become suddenly very, very ill - she was fine Friday and gone Monday. 
She had a massive tumor in her liver and her chest filled with fluid, as a 
result of being FeLV+. We discovered her FeLV status from post-mortem tests. 
Two of my three other cats tested negative last month, but one is positive. The 
vets say that at 9 weeks of age, the tests are not 100% reliable, and that even 
a negative test should have been repeated. The only difference in opinion was 
the length of time to wait to re-test - one said 4 weeks, one said 8 weeks.

I know it's hard to keep a sweet baby locked away by itself, but if I had it to 
do over again, I would in a heartbeat.

I'm wondering if your other adult cat had been tested previously...?  
More likely to transmit easily from an adult to a baby, than vice  
versa, I'd think.


I've been told to retest after 2 months, then also read 3 or 4 months.
