Ok. Although I find that update layout cures all manner of other
gremlins and evils too.

If "incorporate manual positioning" is checked, then tweaks to spacing
inside a measure are preserved proportionately when Update Layout changes
measure widths.

Not that I know of.

That's correct.

It seems to ignore some of these - most annoyingly barline moves.
Does anyone know exactly what is incorporated?
I also find that 'update layout' seems to move some things back too.

I have never, in all my years using Finale, checked the box for

where I'd want to. Imagine a measure-long thirty-second-note run

Well, has *any* version of Finale taken care of that? I'm way behind,
still using WinFin2003, and I've never had collision avoidance of
that kind. But
That does seem rather stupid of MakeMusic to implement new Expressions
but then not have anyway to avoid collisions of them. Not that that is
a HUGE problem, but I do find that sometimes crescendos/decrescendos
sometimes run into the dynamic marking..

Um...
How in the world can this make for better-looking output? It means
manually spacing everything.

Hi Raimund,
It doesn't work. They should have removed the option (and have in
2010, by the report they sent) but the option is still there in 2009,
like your appendix; a relic from a previous stage of evolution that
doesn't do anything and even may cause harm.

Assuming this is happening in a measure with only one layer, then

Michael,
what is the "minimum distance between items" set to?
If you like you can send a file to me personally and tell me where the
problems are, and I will have a look at it tomorrow. It's hard to tell
