Re: [flexcoders] circular image in flex

2016-08-10 Thread Dan Pride danielpr...@yahoo.com [flexcoders]
Whats interesting is most people never even looked at the  motivation.My last
Flex project ran beautifully on everything.Flex threatened to completely
eliminate the differences between Mac and Windows for the user.It threatened to
kill Mac or at least cause a price reduction.THAT'S why Steve Jobs killed
flash.and the world as usual, ran off the cliff like a herd of lemmings.

    The guy who said that killing flex was crime well I will say it was more
than a crime and a pathetic one the technologies should not be shape shifted
this way.Still there is no camparison to the pixel perfection of the Flash/Flex
platform. JavaScript can't promise the crispness sharpness and clarity of Flash
platform. The killed it simply. There was a time when this group wasn't such
quite now there's nothing like before... Alex(Flex) Haurui was always there...
This thing itself signifys that how much devs moved on to other web/mobile
platforms. It really disappointed Flex devs a lot...Anyways wish u all the best.

The death of this technology was a crime.Oliver Cromwell has his Ireland and
Steve Jobs had his flash.
Angular2 is pretty good replacement, eventually they will add a bitmap I
predict.They will have to eventually, or a facsimile thereof

When you can't mathematically relate any pixel on the screen to any other and
do so over time.You are by definition inferior to flash as a user interface.

Isn't React ecmascript 4 based also?If so it will die a quick death when it
goes up against a real computer language based on Ecmascript 6 (plus)
It is so wonderful to see the death of the spaghetti code machine, should have
happened a lot sooner.It is the definition of how not to program.
Going to be fun watching all the javascript/Ajax weenies tackle a real computer
language :)An entire generation of programmers just got left on the beach and

juice under the hood.  That is a concern for trying to emulate Flash or the
current Flex SDK in JS since that is quite a bit of code.  But for FlexJS, if
you look at the prototype of the JQuery wrapping, it is a thin layer written to
implement whatever was needed to implement an AS emulation of JQuery.  So, in
theory, if FlexJS using JQuery isn't fast enough, it probably wasn't going to
be fast enough use JQuery either.  And that's not a problem for the Apache Flex
project.  The browser companies know they need to get their JS implementations
to work faster and computers and devices are getting faster.  It might be a
problem now, but may not be in the future.

Also note that in many cases JS runs faster than AS.  In the JS code we do
write for FlexJS we are trying to re-use code as much as possible, which is
supposed to take advantage of the JS optimizers.  That's why FlexJS is using
more composition instead of inheritance since AS doesn't support multiple
inheritance.

pixel-by-pixel control.  If the industry demands it, the browser
manufacturers will deliver.  It doesn't matter for FlexJS, although it would
probably make some things easier or faster.  Already, we've seen significant
convergence towards standards in the main browsers (IE, FF, Chrome, Android,
IOS).  Compare what we have today vs back in IE6 or even IE8.

I certainly wish you the best with the javascript implementation. But have to
admit to strong doubts about it. No matter how many hoops you put yourself
through you are still working without many fundamentals of advanced
programming. There just isn't the juice under the hood, maybe with parallel
processing, but then we are getting close to a million monkeys banging on
typewriters til they eventually produce a novel aren't we?
I think the latest ie browser brought flash into the browser as a native
element not a plug in. Like it or not you got it. I was stunned to hear it
being done by MS, but its a brilliant way to bring about a correction to the
market hysteria which dominated after Job's death, and Adobe's stupid response.
Eventually the industry will demand pixel by pixel interface control, there
just is no substitute equal to it by definition. After all the burning at the
stake stuff, it will probably be called shadow o! r something, not flash, but
a rose by any other name.

At the risk of creating a never ending brush fire (oh what the hey its fun
sometimes), I wonder if some of the jump on flash and pummel it hysteria had an
unacknowledged element of gay bashing.  Adobe, deserve it or not, like it or
not, had quite a reputation. There was one advocate, I think it was in RTMP
networking videos, that would insert short clips of himself getting back ended
after about 45 minutes of mind numbing, real high end, discussion. I thought it
was funny as hell, removed the glaze from your eyes, and dropped your jaw the
first time you saw it, but i think others were not so amused. (Hey, Kiddies
certainly aren't going to get that far into one of these unless they are
enrolling at Harvard at 12 or something, and I survived the experience, and
found the fast forward button). I think the bent over man statue in front of
the offices also h! elped with the rep issue. BUT WHO CARES ! Credit where
credit ! is due. There were some of the most
 brilliant programmers with some of the greatest contributions by software
developers ever. We have witnessed a modern equivalent of the Salem Witch
trials on this one for whatever reasons, and the amusing part is that we
actually think we are advanced beyond that.

Being its my 12th language I don't find JS that difficult.
I object to the design tho.
Its a completely inferior and unpredictable design approach.
My primary interests are relational database, complex relationships.
having classes etc that enable you to deal with the entire screen as a unit is
invaluable
Look there is a good reason that google is on its third try to replace
javascript with something better.
If the movement of flash native to the browser succeeds then its eventually
going to be game over.
Its basics. Can you relate every pixel on the screen in one unified equation
and morph it at will mathematically.
By the way, I haven't looked lately, been knee deep in other stuff, how is the
flash to the browser native going anyway?

Adapt.  It is childish to cling to a technology like a fanboy.

Dynamic languages use different paradigms than strongly typed languages.  In
these contexts functional styles and extension through composition are favored
over extension through inheritance.  But these are all just tools for
communication between the dev and the user.

The users have chosen a route that no longer needs flex/flash. That is neither
good nor bad - it just is.

You may dislike parts of technology A and think it's inferior to technology B -
but have you considered the notion that possibly you may be trying I hammer
nails with a saw? You may dislike that JS does not have the type safety of AS.
But if you are relying on type checking you are missing the boat. The compiler
can't check if your logic is bad. It can only check that something like tab a
is in slot b.

You still have to unit test. All the skills you bring to solve a problem are
only marginally helped by the compiler bitching that a class does not have a
method to support an interface.  There is nothing inherently bad about
prototypical inheritance as opposed to class based inheritance. As a matter of
fact you typically don't need to use inheritance in JS.

Tell me - is it cleaner to devolve functionality into representations that can
be decorated onto any object - and you test the functionality itself? Or to
HAVE to inherit from class A in order to get the features if class A? You can't
do multiple inheritance in AS - so you have to hack around with interfaces and
utils or you must repeat yourself.

In JS - just decorate what you need with what you need it to do.

It's all good bro. I'm just saying that as a seasoned flex dev that feared
moving to JS - in my experience - it was an easy transition.  But whatever.
Have a great day!

I am trying to read an encrypted video file from the disk in Air (I encrypted

Reading and decrypting the file is no problem, but the videoplayer uses a file

Is there anyway to direct the videoplayer to an in memory variable and if so
will it play correctly?
Does the player use any kind of file position variable to control play (it
must) and how will it react to the absense of such a pointer?
I am looking at serving it from the within the same app but not sure if this
will work either despite posts that say it will in other places.
Is the new peer to peer rtmfp a realistic option here?

Dan,

Whether you use Command-line or Flex Builder it doesn't matter, you
always will try to compile 1 application in entire project, unless you
have two or more applications in the project. Correct me if I am
wrong, as my understanding goes you have EncoderController.as file
which has class definition for EncoderController class which extends
I guess from Application/Sprite. I guess this is the reason your
project's main mxml file has root node as
local:EncoderController./. Now if you are using Flex Builder,
normally the main application mxml file which Flex Builder Template
creates has root node as s:Application. In your case, after that mxml
is created all you need to do just replace that default auto generated
code by your old mxml contents include EncoderController.as in the
src directory, which should work fine for you.

FX:Script tag is used in mxml to just include AS scripts which doesn't
have class definitions. Normally these AS files would have methods,
variables etc required or used in MXML file. I hope you know that any
MXML file can use fx:script tag and write the AS scripts stuff
required in that particular MXML. Treat this MXML+AS script as class.

The reason why you getting error in first place is, the MXML file
which you have is extending from spark::Application [hence root tag as
s:Application] included AS file has definition of a class which also
extends from spark:Application.

Writing code and compiling with SDK using compile time shouldn't be
different from using Flex Builder. In-fact it gives more flexibility
user friendliness. Please read-up more on using Flex Builder, should
help you convert your application more easily.

Let me know if you need more help.

I downloaded and installed the Mac version of Flash Builder 4.6. There
is enough development work yet to be done on my project I figured that
having an IDE to work in might make life easier.

The project was originally written as an mxml file (Encoder.mxml) and an
ActionScript file (EncoderController.as). The mxml file refers to the
ActionScript file by starting out with :
local:EncoderController xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
layout=absolute
xmlns:local=*
height=800 width=800
backgroundColor=#FF
backgroundAlpha=0

On the Mac I selected New then Flex Project and named the project
IntegratedEncoder. That got me an mxml file. I then copied the .as
file over from my other working environment, renamed it
IntegratedEncoderController.as, changed the class name appropriately,
and modified the new mxml file Flash Builder made for me to include
fx:Script source=IntegratedEncoderController.as /

When I save the file the editor windows for
IntegratedEncoderController.as shows an error on the line in which I
import flash.media.Camera. The line with the error and the lines
surrounding it are:

import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.events.NetStatusEvent;
import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
--import flash.media.Camera; ---
import flash.media.Microphone;
import flash.media.Video;
import flash.net http://flash.net.na/.navigateToURL;
import flash.net http://flash.net.Net/.NetConnection;

The indicate line is the one with the error messages. The error messages
associated with it are:
1084: Syntax error: expecting identifier before leftbrace
1131: Classes must not be nested

I also get an error indicated in when I declare a variable of type
Camera:

private var camera:Camera;
The error message associated with this line is another occurence of
1131: Classes must not be nested

I've also got some other error messages, indicated in the editor with

Dan,
To be more specfic, please refer to the attach IntegratedEncoder.FXP
project where I have merged your controller logic into a single MXML
file as the basic rule to create a flex application is to have only
one Applicatin container as root.

About the Application container
The first tag in an MXML application is either the s:Application tag
for the Spark application container, or the mx:Application
tag for an MX application container. The application container then
becomes the default container for any content that you add to your
application.

In IntegratedEncoder.mxml, the s:Application is the root tag, whereas
IntegratedEncoderController.as is extending the mx: Application.

Im getting *really* tired of adjusting the visual layout by running,

the indicated line is marked with Call to a possibly undefined method
addEventListener.

In the mainInit method, I then have two lines:
stage.align = TL;
 stage.scaleMode = noScale;
both marked with Access of undefined property stage

The code I copied over from my other machine compiles just fine using
the SDK and it runs fine. Why is Flash Builder giving these errors? It
looks like it is having problems importing flash.media.Camera and
appears confused by addEventListener. Have I done something with my
project setup that is screwing with Flash Builder? I'm thinking I'd like
to be able to do the rest of this project development in FB, but this
isn't looking very promising so far.

This is a Flash encoding application, that grabs the user's camera,
connects it to a net connection, and sends the stream to a Wowza server.
The guts of the application are working fine, but I'm putting in error
handling now. If the app starts up and either can't find a camera or is
not given permission to access the camera I pop up an Alert box warning
of the issue, and I'd like to then bail out of the application (perhaps
direct the browser to return to the previous page?). I've been able to
find instructions on how to terminate an Air application, but not an app
running inside a browser.

Re: [flexcoders] Passing query string to swf through flashplayerdebugger

2012-01-25 Thread Dan M
I'm developing on Linux, so don't have access to FlashBuilder. I'm just
using the Flex SDK tools from the command line.

I figured it out, though. I just make sure to move my swf over to my web
server docroot and access it with flashplayerdebugger with the
appropriate ? and  arguments.

Now if I could figure out how to easily integrate Flex SDK tools into
Eclipse, I'd be set. Most of the documentation I've seen on how to do
that assume to plugins that I haven't been able to find.

If you are using FLashBuilder, you should be able to see traces in the

I've spoken to a couple of folks on this list who have such components for

  If stuffit doesn't work, you can try RAR, it's not entirely a freeware,
but you can run the evaluation version for as long as you want.
Also, I think that

unzip file.zip -d ~/another/folder

(You run this in terminal - the CMD in PC terms)

will work just fine on any mac OS you may have...

  Flash Builder is a development tool. I would suggest using Flash CS4, as
it is the successor of Flash 8, not Flash Builder. Even still, any fancy
transitions, will still be custom work, either using a tweening library or the
timeline.

Also, I would suggest checking out the Gaia Flash Framework, or Soma UI for
building the site.

  I think that is because flex is now making inroads into the enterprise
and Java is one of the big languages for big enterprises.

SAP Business objects product XCelsius is based on Flex and has come with an SDK
that lets you integrate Flex components as BOBJ components for dashboarding.
SAP Visual Composer is based on flex too. Oracle has some products that use it
as well.

Now for enterprise's using Java, UI has laways been the weakest link. JSP is
decent but nowhere close to Flex. JSF never got that popular ans struts is
age-old but still used. The real problems is multitude of technologies there
that are complex and still do not do that good a job.

Enter Flex with its good integration capabilities, remoting capabilities,
browser independent development etc and the really cool nice interface at a
quarter of the time...

So the strongest contender on UI is trying to replace the weakest performer
here. Don't get me wrong...I am a java guy and I love it (a bit of love is lost
after the oracle acquisition) but having used Servlets, JSP, Struts and MyFaces
I really like Flex.

You do not have to know that much Java...just a bit on how servlets work,
security and web services. There are online tutorials on Sun that are pretty
good...Java Trails on the core SDK (not Java EE)

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Pointers

2010-01-30 Thread Dan Pride
Interesting but not quite the design issue I have in mind.

See  http://www.danielpride.com/Vehicles3/Vehicles3.html

(Its still a little crude, basically playing with the tech.
Clicking on a row fills in a series of text boxes.
if you edit a box, I want to shift the  state just like it does now
when you click the new button at the top, except now it will go to an edit
state.

The idea is you can examine a large data record by selecting it from a row of
important fields, then edit if you like or just look.

Its easy enough to compare the values field by field
but in my old language I would have written a very small
function with two pointers (new and old)
and then just called the same function in each
focus out, passing in the two pointers to the current
field of the focus event.
This has got to be childs play I would think
but newbie status prevents it from popping out of my head I guess.

// get a reference to the column number of

// the cell that's being edited

Thanks. I have an Oracle Cert but is PLSQL, never did the j2ee unfortunately.
Php is all going to object oriented which is fine but my past experience with C

Procedural languages that try to morph to objects always seem to be one big

As a Java developer and having had a small dip in coldfusion

development, I wouldn't dismiss coldfusion so easily.

If you're looking to build straightforward database functionality,

coldfusion is superb and you'll get a solution rapidly. As well as that

you'll have a route to providing reports and such with the help of

coldfusion functionality.

I'm not telling anyone not to learn Java, or to adopt ColdFusion, but

suggesting Java is nicer to work with or more powerful, is not so clear

cut as you would suggest and for some scenarios the opposite is true.

I know that for some projects I've worked on, ColdFusion would have cut

development costs drastically.

I suspect that most Flex projects are driven by PHP rather than Java.

I think the choice of server technology depends on a pile of things,

some technical, some political, some monetary.

 with Java/Flex development.

 I would suggest just learning core Java, Servlets, Java Servers,

 BlazeDS, and Spring. After that decide if you care about getting

 certified.

 Tom suggested learning CF instead.

 I would not recommend that.

 I know CF and Java and I would never use CF for a Flex backend.

 Java is so much nicer to work with and so much more powerful.

[flexcoders] Undetermined line in constructor'

2010-01-10 Thread Dan Pride
I have a problem when I move my amfphp to a new server.
I get the following error

(Object)#0
  message = faultCode:AMFPHP_BUILD_ERROR faultString:'mysql_connect(): Can't
connect to MySQL server on '208.109.94.94' (10060)'
faultDetail:'D:\Hosting\5298779\html\amfphp\services\/MyService.php on line
Undetermined line  in constructor'
  name = Error
  rootCause = (null)

Note, this works fine on the server where the database resides, but the
database is generally accessible, so why do I get the error in the amfphp
browser when trying to log into it from an external server? (log in is being
done from inside the class constructor calling an include file (available) with

Another solution to this is to use helper
classes, instead of compiling the script block into the component class.  I
never have more than a single script block in an mxml file, rarely have more
than one included script file, and often have none of either.

You can use the code-behind technique, or
static functions in a separate class, or a normally instantiated helper class.

The problem (I assume) is that the object you're getitng back isn't XML.  I was

What is your data provider?  Is it an array of objects? XML? It all depends on
what you're doing.  Either way, it's based on a list.  Getting the selected
item will give you a generic object that you need to cast to whichever data
type (actually, you don't have to but it's nicer) at which point you have all
of the properties accessible and you can grab the same property that the first
column is bound to.

  Alright Dan.. so we're going to solve this.  After this much
back-and-forth, we've gotta make it work.

So here's the deal:

if you use my statement and squat is just XML, then you're almost there.

It should be something like this

yourObject
    nameGZAW08/name
    otherPropertyvalue/otherProperty
    etc... /
/yourObject

With your variable squat, you can then access a specific property of it by
saying, for example, squat.name - that will give you the value.  If you want it
as a string, you can also say squat.name.toString ().

Just to clarify earlier, if you had

yourObject name=GZAW08 etc.../

then you would use squ...@name.

  Why the heck do you need to re-cast as an XMLListCollection?

This is a actually really simple...

var squat:XML = XML(squaresGrid. selectedItem) ;
var myValue:String = squ...@myproperty OR squat.myProperty (depending on if
it's a node or attribute)

It does work. I've done it hundreds of times.  Don't know what you're doing

  Dan,

The problem (I assume) is that the object you're getitng back isn't XML.  I was
using that as an example, but when you use the as operator if the object
isn't that type it will always return null.

  Julian... Apparently you are wrong?

When I do it with an untyped var I get an object with an XMLList for each grid
column
   var squat = dataGrid.selectedIt em;

This
var myValue:XML = dataGrid.selectedIt em as XML;
returns null for myValue

Why is it such Rocket Science to get the first value in a column?
Very frustrating for something that should be so simple.

Thanks for the help

So here's the deal:

if you use my statement and squat is just XML, then you're almost there.

It should be something like this

yourObject

    otherPropertyvalue/otherProperty

/yourObject

With your variable squat, you can then access a specific property of it by
saying, for example, squat.name - that will give you the value.  If you want it
as a string, you can also say squat.name.toString ().

Just to clarify earlier, if you had

  Ok, so it is e4x, look into the double dot notation and, as others have
said. try toString() and toXMLString( ). As close as you are it shouldn't be
that hard, even through trial and error, to drill down to the string.

   Alright Dan.. so we're going to solve this.  After this much
 back-and-forth, we've gotta make it work.

 So here's the deal:

 if you use my statement and squat is just XML, then you're almost there.

 It should be something like this

 yourObject

     nameGZAW08 /name

     otherProperty value/otherProp erty

     etc... /

 /yourObject

 With your variable squat, you can then access a specific property of it by
 saying, for example, squat.name - that will give you the value.  If you want
 it as a string, you can also say squat.name.toString ().

 Just to clarify earlier, if you had

 yourObject name=GZAW08 etc.../

 then you would use squ...@name.

It returned a value if the var was untyped
The var would not type

On Creation complete I am filling a datagrid and I want to select the first
value listed from the Name Column (NameCol)

What is the syntax?
dataGrid.selectedIndex = 0;
Value = dataGrid.selectedItem.NameCol;

Does not work. why not?

Thanks

Sorry this line makes no sense to me
var myName:String = myval...@name.
What is the @ symbol?
Why does it end in a period?
The original Table field was Name but myValue.Name doesn't work either.

Thanks for the help.

  You can't access the value from the column name - getting the selected
value will give you the entire row that the datagrid is displaying from which
you can get the value you're looking for.  In other words, if you have an
XMLList as your dataProvider, you can do something like:

var myValue:XML = dataGrid.selectedIt em as XML;
var myName:String = myval...@name.

Make sense?

[flexcoders] How do You find Contracts

2009-11-16 Thread Dan Pride
I know this is a bit off topic, but I have been honing my Flex skills for two
years now and am wondering how to find a way to put them to use.
I have tried craigs list posts to no end with zero result.
How do you connect with work in Flex and Air?
Some Cairngorm would go right good about now :)

[flexcoders] ComboBox intialization problem

2009-11-10 Thread Dan Pride
I am switching viewstacks from a doubleclick on a data grid to a data entry
screen for the record. Classic database stuff.
Everything works great except for the first time on the ComboBox's, then after
one time everything works. (In one of my old languages it would be an
initialization problem),

All other fields write properly. I am not using Carngorm on this app yet altho
am rapidly headed in that direction, but need to solve this one as is if
possible.

On double click I load the value into a public bindable variable and then
switch viewstack and rely on the binding to fill the value in the Combobox.
(Using it as a popup to select a single value).

[Bindable]
public var locaQuality:String;

[Bindable]
public var locaQualityArr:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(
 [ {label:, data:1}, {label:Clean, data:2}}]);

mx:ComboBox id=LocaQualityCol
dataProvider={locaQualityArr}   text={locaQuality}
close=closeLocaQuality(event); labelField=label x=246  y=128
width=125 themeColor=#009DFF  height=22 textAlign=center/

private function editLoca(event:Event):void {
    locaQuality = locaGrid.selectedItem.locaQualityCol;

        home.selectedIndex = 3; }

private function closeLocaQuality(event:Event):void{locaQuality =
LocaQualityCol.selectedItem.label;}

Thanks
this one has me stumped !

[flexcoders] Data Transfer between Viewstacks

2009-11-05 Thread Dan Pride
I am building an app that includes datagrids where when double clicking a
record causes the ViewStack to change to a new view to present the data in a
form for editing/creating.

What is the best way to transfer data between two different view states?
Bindable public variables? Where you dump the record field data into public
bindable vars then load it into text squares in the new viewstate???

Is there a standard way to do this? Value Objects?

Thanks
Dan

There is also a wealth of free video training on adobe such as

  Hi,

My boss was wondering if there are any recommended training courses for flex.
We are based in Gibraltar but I don't think traveling is an issue.

Personally I'd like to see some kind of certification out of it.  Any
recommended courses?

I know its vague because I haven't specified a level however the flex abilities
of my department are very mixed.

Regards,

Wes
