While we are on the subject of external drives, I recommend the laptop size external drives. They require a low enough amount of power that they can be powered by the USB itself. No need for a power cord. I find that to be very convenient. (Check the specs to make sure that they don't require external power.) Wow. Thanks for the clarification. ...going to the back of the class now... -Original Message- From: Fred Ridder [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 1:26 PM To: Carol Wade; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: deleting backup files You don't need the .backup to back out of an unwanted editing change because right there in the File menu is the Revert to last saved command, wich does exactly what it says and does not rely on the the .backup file created by the automatic backup mode. I can see where a global find and replace could be a case where it might be necessary to use the .backup files to back out of the change. But in my own workflow I tend to use variables for anything that is likely to need to be changed globally, and variable changes are easy to undo without reverting to an older version of the doc. But it's important to note that manually reverting to the .backup is actually taking you back to the version *before* your last save because the .backup file is *not*a*backup* of the version you saved. It's the file as it existed *prior*to* the last save. The only time that this is what you really want to do is when you have made *and*saved* some unwanted changes and need to revert to the second previous saved version. The .backup file is always one save behind the changes you have made, so you'll be throwing out both the current changes and the last saved set of changes if you revert to the .backup. Re: Pagination changes
Doug, You really don't want to set that folloiwing file to start on a Left page because then you'll have blank page issues again if the 3-page chapter expands or contracts to an even number of pages (and therefore ends on a left page). What you really want is Next Available, which is only an option when you're setting the pagination in the book window. (The individual file pagination settings do not include this option because there is no such thing as a preceding file when the context is an individual file outside of a book.) -Fred From: Doug [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Lester C. While we are on the subject of external drives, I recommend the laptop size external drives. They require a low enough amount of power that they can be powered by the USB itself. No need for a power cord. I find that to be very convenient. (Check the specs to make sure that they don't require external power.) Does anyone know, does Frame 8's unicode support mean that it will now support languages like Persian and Dari? Thanks. Paul
Frame 8 - unicode support
Absolutely NOT! FrameMaker does NOT support right-to-left languages such as Hebrew, Arabic, and Farsi. You can type the Unicode characters, but they will appear left-to-right and the various language rules (context sensitive rules, ligatures, etc.) are not obeyed. - Dov > -Original Message- > From: framers-bounces+isaacs=adobe.com at lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers- > bounces+isaacs=adobe.com at lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of obair81 at comcast.net > Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 9:19 AM > To: framers list > Subject: Frame 8 - unicode support > > Does anyone know, does Frame 8's unicode support mean that it will now support languages like Persian > and Dari? > > Thanks. > > Paul > ___ > > > You are currently subscribed to Framers as isaacs at adobe.com. > > Send list messages to framers at lists.frameusers.com. > > To unsubscribe send a blank email to > framers-unsubscribe at lists.frameusers.com > or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/isaacs%40adobe.com > > Send administrative questions to listadmin at frameusers.com. I have a three page chapter in a book. It's set to Double-Sided and to start on a Right page. Lastly, I have it set to Delete Empty Pages. However, when I update the book, the last setting always changes to Make Page Count Even. Knowing FrameMaker this is probably WAD, but I need the following chapter to start on a Left page, as page number 4 of the three page preceeding chapter. Any ideas? --Doug
Pagination changes
Two things: 1) You need to set the pagination in the book file rather than in the chapter files. 2) You need to set the pagination for the *following* chapter to start on "Next Available" (a choice that is only available from the book window) as well as setting the 3-page chapter to delete unused pages. >From: Doug >To: "Framers (E-mail)" >Subject: Pagination changes >Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2007 15:24:45 -0500 > >I have a three page chapter in a book. I'll wager that the next file/chapter after this 3-page one is also set to start on a right page. The starting page takes precedence over the prior file's ending page - Frame will add a blank page to make the page count even so the second file can start on a right-hand page. Set the second file to start on the next available side from the BOOK window, and also to continue page numbering from the previous file, and then update the book again. If you're compulsive, you can set the properties in the individual file as well, but the book-level settings take priority over an individual file's settings and if they're different, you will get a warning notice. FrameMaker to HTML
I am running FrameMaker 6.0p405 on Windows XP. Normally, I supply PDFs of manuals (made from FrameMaker books). I've got a request to supply a manual in HTML format. I've never looked at HTML before, so I am clueless. In FrameMaker 6.0p405, saving the book at HTML results in quite a mess. Saving the Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 PDF as HTML results in a similar mess. How do I convert my FrameMaker files into HTML? Can you give me an outline of the steps that I should follow, or point me at some written instruction? Thanks for you help, Richard
Special > Marker dialog box has disappeared
I am new to this list (I work at Symantec). Am looking for assistance with the following problem (on Frame 7.1, Windows XP): A couple week ago, my "Marker" dialog box suddenly disappeared. That is, when I click Special > Marker, the Marker dialog box does not appear. The other dialogs in the Special menu display correctly (Anchored Frame, Cross Reference, etc). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FrameMaker, but the problem persists. Would be very thankful of any help or suggestions! -dennis Be a better Globetrotter. You probably inadvertently moved it off-screen. Or maybe changed your display resolution to the same effect. To fix it, open maker.ini in a text editor. In the [DialogLayout] section, there is a line like this: Markers=997, 400 Your numbers are probably different (bigger). They specify the location on screen of the upper left corner of the dialog. I don't recall if it's horizontal, then vertical, or the other way around. Change them to something reasonable, like: Markers=200, 200 Save and close maker.ini, and start (or restart) FM. That should fix it. HTH! Richard -- Richard G. Combs Senior Technical Writer Polycom, Inc. richardDOTcombs AT polycomDOTcom 303-223-5111 -- rgcombs AT gmailDOTcom 303-777-0436 --

You guessed right, Lester. I had neglected to set the 2nd file to start on a Left page, despite having planned for this in my mind. I didn't realize that a subsequent chapter in a book could have a "retroactive" effect upon a preceeding chapter. That is, as you said, the first page setting of a chapter overrides the final page setting of the preceeding chapter if the two are in conflict. Thanks, Doug
Pagination changes
Doug, You really don't want to set that folloiwing file to start on a Left page because then you'll have blank page issues again if the 3-page chapter expands or contracts to an even number of pages (and therefore ends on a left page). What you really want is "Next Available", which is only an option when you're setting the pagination in the book window. (The individual file pagination settings do not include this option because there is no such thing as a preceding file when the context is an individual file outside of a book.) -Fred >From: Doug >To: "Lester C. Hi Richard, The only two reasonable ways I know to accomplish this are with the use of third-party tools: * Mif2Go by Omni Systems (http://www.omsys.com/dcl/omni.htm) - Less expensive but more challenging to master. * WebWorks ePublisher by Quadralay (http://www.quadralay.com/) - More expensive but-you guessed it-a bit easier to learn and use.
