Re: Add call to animation in Fm 7.2 document

2007-07-25 Thread Shlomo Perets

Stephen,

You wrote:

Our Tech Support staff has made several animations in Adobe Captivate as
the main tool to teach our users certain functionalities. Captivate
generates output in .SWF + .HTML or .EXE (FlashPlayer wrapped with the
.SWF file) format) but not .AVI or other common formats.

I will make a prodecural document in FM to give the user the work context
and convert it to PDF. I cannot add the animations to the FM file because
File Import Object does not accept those formats. And the hypertext
command that can launch an applicatio in FrameMaker does not work once PDFed.

I know I can simply add buttons to the FM document and convert to PDF, and
then link the button areas to the .SWF, .HTML, or EXE files. But each
time I redo the PDF I will lose the links made to the external files. Our
goal is to send our document out to specific users and have them test it -
there will be several iterations of this tool and many new PDF documents
generated. i will go lonk crazy!

Do you have any suggestions? is there a better way to do this?

In FrameMaker/Windows, you can establish a link to a file (carried over as
a link in a PDF file), by using the message openfile filename hypertext
marker (no quotes, filename replaced with the specific file to be launched
by the PDF link).

The linked file may of any file type that can be handled in the end-user
system, and it is displayed using the associated application (after a
standard security message is displayed).

The press release for FrameMaker 8.0 indicates specific support for SWF --
we'll have to wait for the released product to see how this is implemented.

In addition: with the Multimedia Assistant, FrameMaker-to-Acrobat
TimeSavers add-on, multimedia files can be linked/embedded in PDFs, with
additional controls over how the media is played (floating window or in
document), controller shown/hidden, media title, web-based media and more.

Re: deleting backup files

2007-07-25 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
While we are on the subject of external drives, I recommend the laptop
size external drives. They require a low enough amount of power that
they can be powered by the USB itself. No need for a power cord. I find
that to be very convenient. (Check the specs to make sure that they
don't require external power.)

- Invest in a large capacity external drive and dump EVERYTHING to it

Subject: RE: deleting backup files

You don't need the .backup to back out of an unwanted editing
change because right there in the File menu is the Revert to last
saved command, wich does exactly what it says and does not rely
on the the .backup file created by the automatic backup mode.

I can see where a global find and replace could be a case where
it might be necessary to use the .backup files to back out of the
change. But in my own workflow I tend to use variables for anything
that is likely to need to be changed globally, and variable changes
are easy to undo without reverting to an older version of the doc.

But it's important to note that manually reverting to the .backup
is actually taking you back to the version *before* your last save
because the .backup file is *not*a*backup* of the version you
saved. It's the file as it existed *prior*to* the last save. The only
time that this is what you really want to do is when you have
made *and*saved* some unwanted changes and need to revert
to the second previous saved version. The .backup file is always
one save behind the changes you have made, so you'll be throwing
out both the current changes and the last saved set of changes
if you revert to the .backup.

Interesting, Fred, that your bacon has never been saved by a .backup. I
tend to work quickly - perhaps a bit too hastily at times. When I
realize that I have made a stoopid global change or have edited the
meaning out of some text, I am glad to have the .backup.

Its good to know that we are each unique!

FrameMaker does NOT support right-to-left languages

InDesign ME offers this support (both platforms); maybe future versions of

Re: Pagination changes

2007-07-25 Thread Fred Ridder

Doug,

You really don't want to set that folloiwing file to start on a Left
page because then you'll have blank page issues again if the
3-page chapter expands or contracts to an even number of
pages (and therefore ends on a left page).

What you really want is Next Available, which is only an option
when you're setting the pagination in the book window. (The
individual file pagination settings do not include this option
because there is no such thing as a preceding file when the
context is an individual file outside of a book.)

You guessed right, Lester. I had neglected to set the 2nd file to

RE: Special Marker dialog box has disappeared

The other dialogs in the Special menu display correctly
 (Anchored Frame, Cross Reference, etc).

You probably inadvertently moved it off-screen. Or maybe changed your
display resolution to the same effect. To fix it, open maker.ini in a
text editor. In the [DialogLayout] section, there is a line like this:

Markers=997, 400

Your numbers are probably different (bigger). They specify the location
on screen of the upper left corner of the dialog. I don't recall if it's
horizontal, then vertical, or the other way around. Change them to
something reasonable, like:

Markers=200, 200

Save and close maker.ini, and start (or restart) FM. That should fix it.

Pagination changes

2007-07-25 Thread Doug

I have a three page chapter in a book. It's set to Double-Sided and
to start on a Right page. Lastly, I have it set to Delete Empty
Pages. However, when I update the book, the last setting always
changes to Make Page Count Even. Knowing FrameMaker this is probably
WAD, but I need the following chapter to start on a Left page, as page
number 4 of the three page preceeding chapter. Any ideas?

In FrameMaker/Windows, you can establish a link to a file (carried over as
a link in a PDF file), by using the "message openfile filename" hypertext
marker (no quotes, filename replaced with the specific file to be launched
by the PDF link).

TimeSavers add-on, multimedia files can be linked/embedded in PDFs, with
additional controls over how the media is played (floating window or in
document), controller shown/hidden, media title, web-based media and more.

deleting backup files

2007-07-25 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
While we are on the subject of external drives, I recommend the laptop
size external drives. They require a low enough amount of power that
they can be powered by the USB itself. No need for a power cord. I find
that to be very convenient. (Check the specs to make sure that they
don't require external power.)

Absolutely NOT!

FrameMaker does NOT support right-to-left languages
such as Hebrew, Arabic, and Farsi. You can type the
Unicode characters, but they will appear left-to-right
and the various language rules (context sensitive rules,
ligatures, etc.) are not obeyed.

Pagination changes

I have a three page chapter in a book. It's set to Double-Sided and

Pagination changes

2007-07-25 Thread Fred Ridder
Two things:

1) You need to set the pagination in the book file rather than in the
chapter files.

2) You need to set the pagination for the *following* chapter to
start on "Next Available" (a choice that is only available from the book
window) as well as setting the 3-page chapter to delete unused pages.

Pagination changes

2007-07-25 Thread Lester C. Smalley
I'll wager that the next file/chapter after this 3-page one is also set
to start on a right page. The starting page takes precedence over the
prior file's ending page - Frame will add a blank page to make the page
count even so the second file can start on a right-hand page.

Set the second file to start on the next available side from the BOOK
window, and also to continue page numbering from the previous file, and
then update the book again.

If you're compulsive, you can set the properties in the individual file
as well, but the book-level settings take priority over an individual
file's settings and if they're different, you will get a warning notice.

I am new to this list (I work at Symantec). Am looking
for assistance with the following problem (on Frame
7.1, Windows XP):

A couple week ago, my "Marker" dialog box suddenly
disappeared. That is, when I click Special > Marker,
the Marker dialog box does not appear.

The other dialogs in the Special menu display
correctly (Anchored Frame, Cross Reference, etc).

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FrameMaker,
but the problem persists.

Would be very thankful of any help or suggestions!

You have two options and both involve buying/learning some software. Before you
say "but how 'bout free!", remember, you've tried it and you didn't like it.

- ePublisher from Quadralay (gui and expensive, http://www.quadralay.com/)

You probably inadvertently moved it off-screen. Or maybe changed your
display resolution to the same effect. To fix it, open maker.ini in a
text editor. In the [DialogLayout] section, there is a line like this:

Markers=997, 400

Your numbers are probably different (bigger). They specify the location
on screen of the upper left corner of the dialog. I don't recall if it's
horizontal, then vertical, or the other way around. Change them to
something reasonable, like:

Markers=200, 200

Save and close maker.ini, and start (or restart) FM. That should fix it.

D'oh! Momentary lapse of reason:

It's horizontal first. If it weren't, that 997 would push part of the
dialog off the bottom of my 1280x1024 display. :-)

Pagination changes

You guessed right, Lester. I had neglected to set the 2nd file to
start on a Left page, despite having planned for this in my mind. I
didn't realize that a subsequent chapter in a book could have a
"retroactive" effect upon a preceeding chapter. That is, as you said,
the first page setting of a chapter overrides the final page setting
of the preceeding chapter if the two are in conflict.

Thanks,

Doug

Pagination changes

2007-07-25 Thread Fred Ridder
Doug,

You really don't want to set that folloiwing file to start on a Left
page because then you'll have blank page issues again if the
3-page chapter expands or contracts to an even number of
pages (and therefore ends on a left page).

What you really want is "Next Available", which is only an option
when you're setting the pagination in the book window. (The
individual file pagination settings do not include this option
because there is no such thing as a preceding file when the
context is an individual file outside of a book.)

FrameMaker to HTML

2007-07-25 Thread Charles Beck
Hi Richard,

The only two reasonable ways I know to accomplish this are with the use of
third-party tools:
*   Mif2Go by Omni Systems (http://www.omsys.com/dcl/omni.htm) - Less
expensive but more challenging to master.
* WebWorks ePublisher by Quadralay (http://www.quadralay.com/) - More
expensive but-you guessed it-a bit easier to learn and use.

Subject: FrameMaker to HTML

I am running FrameMaker 6.0p405 on Windows XP. Normally, I supply PDFs of
manuals (made from FrameMaker books).

I've got a request to supply a manual in HTML format. I've never looked at HTML
before, so I am clueless.

In FrameMaker 6.0p405, saving the book at HTML results in quite a mess.

Saving the Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 PDF as HTML results in a similar mess.

How do I convert my FrameMaker files into HTML? Can you give me an outline of
the steps that I should follow, or point me at some written instruction?

Thanks for you help,
Richard

FrameMaker to HTML

2007-07-25 Thread Art Campbell
I'd second Charle's and John's tool analysis, but come more heavily on
the MIF2Go side because support is MUCH better. And for what you want,
I think it'd be easier to generate what you need.

Richard,

Thanks for the suggestion. My system must have some
other problem, because the change made no difference:
the Marker dialog box still does not appear.

For what it's worth, here are the values in my
