Re: [framers] Conditional text

Hi Yves,

I don't have anything ready-made, but FrameScript could be used for this
type of condition tag management. FrameScript (for Windows) could read an
Excel spreadsheet directly to get the settings. If you give me more details
on what you want to do, I can provide you with a proposal for a FrameScript
solution. Thanks.

 Hello Framers and Framescripters,

two questions about conditional text usage in Frame 7:

 1. What are the ways (plug-ins, framescripts) to automatically trace
conditional text in a file (or book) which has not been applied? Also,
can these condition tags be removed, if necessary?

 2. Suppose I've got a file (Excel sheet or a table) with an overview of
which conditional text should used in which file (multiple languages).
Is is possible to take this file and automatically apply these settings
 to a book?

RE: Opening an old .WDB file

2005-11-23 Thread Mark Levitt
Mary,

This is a Microsoft Works 4.0 database file.

There are commercial tools that claim to be able to convert them to
Excel:
http://www.rl-software.com/converter/wks-wdb-to-excel.htm
I have no experience with this tool or company.

If you just need the text and you don't want to spend any money, you
might try using a program called strings. There is a Windows version
here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Strings.html

Strings is a command-line utility that reads a binary file and displays
any embedded text contained in the file.
It's likely that the Works database has the actual data as simple text.
Strings won't display the structure or headings, but it might show you
the text.

Cheers,
Mark

RE: [framers] Conditional text

2005-11-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by tracing conditional text.
But to answer the second part of the question, when you attempt
to delete a condition tag (highlight the tag in the Conditional Text
dialog, click Edit Condition Tag, click Delete) FrameMaker will
present a further dialog (asking whether you wish to delete the
tagged text or make it unconditional) if and only if the tag is
applied to some text in the current file. If the tag is not applied
to anything in the file, the tag is simply deleted.

For managing conditional tags, the best solution is to use a
series of FrameMaker template files for each set of conditions
rather than some external file type. The text of each file explains
when the condition set should be used, what conditions will be
set in particular ways, and even step-by-step instructions on how
to do this. But the real value is that this file is set up with the
particular set of conditional text settings so that all you need
to do is use FileImportFormats to import them from the
template into the file or book that you are working with.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

RE: Graphics question

2005-11-23 Thread Grant Hogarth
G Cute, Jefro.

What I wanted was 4 pix (T,B,L,R) that I could add to an anchored frame
as needed without having to tweak the underlying image file, as then I
could reuse the same underlying image in different places in the
document.

What I will have to do now is keep a separate version of each edited
image (plus the master) in my picture folder -- probably about a 30%
increase in the number of files (already over 700) that I have to
track/maintain.

This is true if I use Snagit, Photoshop, or any other editing app.
If I save the Master as a PSD, I can use layers, but I then have to
recreate the layers for each master.
(I know, create/save a blank image with the four fade-out layers, and
then add the screencap as a base layer. That is yet another pair of
steps (the images are not all the same size/dimensions, so there is
creation, then resizing, then adjusting focus/visible layers.)

Sub-optimal, but that seems to be the way of the world.

Scripting only works if the hidden/revealed areas are the same in each
image -- which is not true.

Re: OT: question about commenting in Acrobat 7 Pro

2005-11-23 Thread Bill Swallow
 1) I assumed that for PDFs created with Acrobat 7 Pro,
commenting is enabled for Adobe Reader by default. Is
 that true?

You have to enable it for the PDF you create, but that step is easy. :-)

 2) I am assuming Acrobat 7 Pro does something in the
PostScript code that enables commenting. Am I close?
I'd appreciate more technical info., if anyone knows.

I doon't know the tech info, but I believe it just passes a key
along that unlocks functionality in the Reader.

 3) When I open a PDF created by Acrobat 6 Pro, Adobe
Reader won't add comments. But, I can open that same
PDF in Acrobat 7 Pro and use Comments Enable for
Commenting in Adobe Reader This seems to
reprocess the PDF ... is it adding PostScript code or
something? (I don't see it reprinting.)

Probably a key...

 4) But, when I open a PDF created by Acrobat 7 Pro, I
can still use Comments Enable for Commenting in
Adobe Reader ... and that seems to reprocess the PDF.
 Why?

Dunno.

 5) If I create a PDF using Acrobat 7 Pro, can I turn
off commenting in any way other than Saving as an
earlier version of PDF or security?

Just don't enable it.

 6) Am using this with FM 7.1. I can't find a way to
semi-automatically apply security through the FM
interface, nor through Joboptions, only through
printer preferences. Is that the only way?

PS text frames. ;-)

RE: Table of Contents Question - 2

2005-11-23 Thread Tweedy, Scott

Thanks for the answers. I think my mind is becoming
blurry that I can't see the easy answers and think they all have to be much more
complex than they are.

I have a second issue.

the text I want in the table of contents is left justified
and the page number is right justified. I use the Reference Page
$elementonly(tab)$pagenum. When the text is just long
enough that it "runs into" the page number the page number wraps to the next
line instead of the text "breaking" and then wrapping. Here's an example
of what I mean:

ILS or ILS/RADAR RWY 26L...177
SID(VECTOR) NON JET RICHMOND.
178
SID(VECTOR) VANCOUVER..179
NOISE ABATEMENT (pg 1)180

Is there a way to detect the conflict and "break" the text
for page 178 so that it reads like this:

ILS or ILS/RADAR RWY 26L...177
SID(VECTOR) NON JET

RICHMOND178
SID(VECTOR) VANCOUVER..179
NOISE ABATEMENT (pg 1)180

RE: Table of Contents Question

2005-11-23 Thread Joe Malin

Dear Scott - Mon cher Scott :)

I've run into this situation before, and I think there's no
automatic workaround to it. You should be able to add a tab character to the
second line so that the page number is aligned, but you'll have to do that by
hand. I often had this situation when I wrote books for Oracle Corp., and that
was their standard operating procedure.

I figure that ifOracle's entire cadre of
FMdocumentation production specialists can't come up with a solution,
there isn't one.

Not that I'm aware of, but I can't say that I've really looked for them.

> software, pitfalls)?

Writing a complete XSL:FO for DocBook is theoretically impossible, as
the structure is endlessly recursive. In practical terms then, you need
to look at your documents for guidance about which contexts to code for.
If you have documents, you can use something like the 'Topologi
Professional Edition*' (http://www.topologi.com) to generate a list of
all of the existing XPaths, then only write rules for the contexts you
need to support.

If you don't have documents, I suggest you prune the structure of
DocBook ruthlessly, even to the point where you suspect that it will be
deficient for your documentation needs, then reinstate elements when and
where required based on request and justification. (Hopefully you've
already done this for your FrameMaker application.) If you sign up for
creating an XSL:FO stylesheet to comprehensively handle DocBook, you'll
find yourself on a hiding to nowhere.

* Topologi is a commercial product, but does have a 30 day free
download. My company does have an interest in it, so you should weigh my
advice accordingly.

Extra colours introduced by PNGs

This is on behalf of a fellow Oz framer who has been trying to post for the
last couple of days with no joy.

He switched to using PNGs for the many screenshots in his very large manuals
-- but the file sizes have blown out exponentially, presumably because of the
now millions of extra colours introduced to the Frame colour lists. (All
images are imported by ref, BTW.) He is using FM 7.1, having recently binned
5.5.6 (where the problem also existed).

I vaguely remember reading that this colour blow-out applies only when one
particular Windows Colour Quality setting is used.

Can anyone please remind me which one?

He will also need some plugin (or a FrameScript) that he can wipe over >10,000
pages to rid them of the extra colours.

All contributions greatfully received.

Opening an old .WDB file

2005-11-23 Thread Mark Levitt
Mary,

This is a Microsoft Works 4.0 database file.

There are commercial tools that claim to be able to convert them to
Excel:
http://www.rl-software.com/converter/wks-wdb-to-excel.htm
I have no experience with this tool or company.

If you just need the text and you don't want to spend any money, you
might try using a program called "strings". There is a Windows version
here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Strings.html

Strings is a command-line utility that reads a binary file and displays
any embedded text contained in the file.
It's likely that the Works database has the actual data as simple text.
Strings won't display the structure or headings, but it might show you
the text.

Cheers,
Mark

The PNGs have to be non-indexed (24-bit color instead of 8-bit color).

Saving as MIF will clear all of the "RGB nnn, nnn, nnn" colors.

If many FM files are involved, visit http://www.microtype.com/Links.html
for information on utilities which save all files in a book as MIF.

[framers] Conditional text

2005-11-23 Thread Yves Barbion
Hello Framers and Framescripters,

two questions about conditional text usage in Frame 7:

1. What are the ways (plug-ins, framescripts) to automatically trace
conditional text in a file (or book) which has not been applied? Also,
can these condition tags be removed, if necessary?

2. Suppose I've got a file (Excel sheet or a table) with an overview of
which conditional text should used in which file (multiple languages).
Is is possible to take this file and automatically apply these settings
to a book?

Bleed tabs - automation?

2005-11-23 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
There is also a white paper called Atomatic Bleeding Thumb Tabs by
Bradley W. Anderson, Falcon Interactive. It comes with instructions on
how to make the template and it also has the FrameScript script for
automation. I have only used it to set up the template without the
automation (works like semiautomatic for me), as I don't have
FrameScript.

I think it is the same as was on www.FrameUsers.com > Downloads >

[framers] Conditional text

2005-11-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "tracing" conditional text.

The text of each file explains
when the condition set should be used, what conditions will be
set in particular ways, and even step-by-step instructions on how
to do this. But the real value is that this file is set up with the
particular set of conditional text settings so that all you need
to do is use File>Import>Formats to import them from the
template into the file or book that you are working with.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Extra colours introduced by PNGs

2005-11-23 Thread Doug
PNG files add colors to the FM file only if they use less than 16
million colors. You won't see this problem if you make sure your PNGs
use a 16 million color depth.

You can fix any FM document that suffers from this by either of the
following methods:

1) Save the FM as MIF, then open the MIF and save it as FM.
or
2) Use the Replace Colors script with FrameScript.

Graphics question

2005-11-23 Thread Grant Hogarth
 Cute, Jefro.

(I know, create/save a "blank" image with the four fade-out layers, and
then add the screencap as a base layer.

Grant

OT: question about commenting in Acrobat 7 Pro

2005-11-23 Thread Sean
Hi,

Sorry for the OT question, but I thought some of you
might have some excellent answers for me on these
Acrobat-related questions.

My boss raised a good question. I have a question
about how commenting works.

1) I assumed that for PDFs created with Acrobat 7 Pro,
commenting is enabled for Adobe Reader by default. Is
that true?

2) I am assuming Acrobat 7 Pro does something in the
PostScript code that enables commenting. Am I close?
I'd appreciate more technical info., if anyone knows.

3) When I open a PDF created by Acrobat 6 Pro, Adobe
Reader won't add comments. But, I can open that same
PDF in Acrobat 7 Pro and use Comments > Enable for
Commenting in Adobe Reader This seems to
reprocess the PDF ... is it adding PostScript code or
something? (I don't see it reprinting.)

4) But, when I open a PDF created by Acrobat 7 Pro, I
can still use Comments > Enable for Commenting in
Adobe Reader ... and that seems to reprocess the PDF.
Why?

5) If I create a PDF using Acrobat 7 Pro, can I turn
off commenting in any way other than Saving as an
earlier version of PDF or security?

6) Am using this with FM 7.1. I can't find a way to
semi-automatically apply security through the FM
interface, nor through Joboptions, only through
printer preferences. Is that the only way?

Thanks and cheers,

Sean

question about commenting in Acrobat 7 Pro

2005-11-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
1) Incorrect. Commenting is not enabled by default.

2) I don't think it has anything to do with PostScript code,
per se, because I don't think there is anything in PostScript
that supports the commenting functionality. I would guess
that it embeds some chunk of Acrobat code that Adobe
Reader 7 knows how to use to provide commenting.

3) It adds whatever chunk of magic is required by Adobe
Reader 7 to support commenting.

4) Same as #3. Commenting is not enabled by default so
it has to be added by the command you mention.

5) See #1. It's not turned on in the first place so there's no
need for a mechanism to turn it off. But if you have a PDF
that has commenting enabled, a simple Save As removes
the commenting magic--or at least that's what I assume
happens because of the warning I see whenever I try to
save a commenting-enabled PDF that someone sends me.

6) If you use a watched folder, you can set both the
joboptions and the security for that folder. Setting up
several watched folders supports different combinations
of joboptions and security settings for different purposes.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

FrameMaker on Win XP Pro 64-bit?

2005-11-23 Thread Dov Isaacs
FWIW, Adobe does not officially support any applications on the 64-bit
editions of Windows. I have heard no reports, good or bad, so far of any

use of FrameMaker in such an environment.

On the other hand, I do know that the automatic mechanisms for creation
of PDF -- use of AdobePDF PostScript printer driver instance or built-in
FrameMaker "save as PDF" facility -- do not work under Windows XP
64-bit.

Our advice is to consider Windows XP 64-bit edition as more of an
experiment than a stable application environement except for situations
in
which you have both application programs and drivers specifically
written
for and tested in this environment. Also, unless one has an application
program that specifically can make use of the large address spaces
and special machine instructions of this environment, one should not
expect any significant performance improvements with existing software
in Windows XP 64-bit.

I doon't know the tech info, but I believe it just passes a "key"

Merge lists?

2005-11-23 Thread Scott Prentice
Hi...

I'm just going to throw this out and see what comes of it .. being
relatively new to both of these lists, I don't have the history to know
any better.

In a perfect world, is there really a need for both of these lists
(FrameUsers and Framers)? Are most people actually on both lists (except
for those who have a grudge against one or the other moderator)? If we
all set aside any personal differences and pride, would there be any
problem with just having one list?

It seems like most questions about FrameMaker are sent to both lists,
which is a needless waste of bandwidth, disk space, and personal time to
delete the duplicates. Sure, I can just subscribe to one of the lists
and pretend that the issue doesn't exist, but then .. "what if" I miss
something *important* on the other list?

I don't know about the logistics of merging the two lists .. obviously,
it would have to be some sort of opt-in thing .. don't want to force
anyone to do anything they don't want to do. Perhaps, it would just be a
matter of setting up a new list, telling people about it so they can
sign up or not, then close down the other two lists (we don't want to
end up with three lists). It would be great if the moderators of the
current lists could be co-moderators (remember, this is the "perfect
world").

I know of all sorts of reasons that this is a *good* idea .. I'd like to
hear reasons why it's not. Perhaps there really is a good reason to have
two lists that provide the same service to the same people.

Or .. we can just leave things as they are .. perhaps I'm just nuts. :)

Merge lists?

2005-11-23 Thread Robert Kern
Scott,

I moderate several lists. If you use Mailman, its quite straightforward
to merge lists. I'd suggest keeping one list and merging the 2nd list
into it on as "invite" instead of "subscribe" so that people wouldn't
need to do anything to opt out. In mailman at the command level you can
export the 2nd list's membership and then use Mass Subscription to merge
the file into the 1st list. Mailman is programmed to automatically cull
out duplicate names.

Table of Contents Question

2005-11-23 Thread Tweedy, Scott
I have a table of contents that is dynamically generated from the contents
of a book (I do this for 12 different books). At times the length of the
text in the element I have to use to create the entries in the table of
contents is too long and it wraps to a second line.

Is there a way to elegantly handle this situation?

What I would like to be able to do is set up a tab so that when the text
wraps there is a little bit of an indent to show that the new line is still
part of the original element.

Thanks in advance,

Table of Contents Question

2005-11-23 Thread Art Campbell
If I'm understanding the question & problem correctly, I think modifing the
TOC paragraph tags to have a 0 first line indent and, say, a .125 inch
left indent
(essentially setting up an (outdent) would do this. It should only be
applied to TOC lines that wrap to a second line and should only affect
the second line.

But I don't think you could get a tab setting to do this.

No, you need to turn it on for each file. I believe it's off because
it adds some bulk.

I think comments are implemented using a layer, and more over it's a layer that
can be saved out independently. I don't think it has a lot to do with
PS, other than
work with it in a compatible way.

Yes, something. The layer that carries the comments, as well as an internal code
that is required to support them.

The comments have to be linked to locations and both the
core file and the additions saved in a binary format.

You're assuming it's on by default. It isn't.

Table of Contents Question

2005-11-23 Thread Ridder, Fred
Easy. In the TOC file, use the Basic tab of the Paragraph Designer to set the
Left indent to be greater than the First indent. And if your page numbers are
right-aligned with a tab stop, you'll want to go to the TOC reference page and
insert two tabs between the <$paratext> and <$pagenum> in each of the prototype
paragraphs.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Table of Contents Question - 2

2005-11-23 Thread Tweedy, Scott
Thanks for the answers. I think my mind is becoming blurry that I can't see
the easy answers and think they all have to be much more complex than they
are.

I have a second issue.

the text I want in the table of contents is left justified and the page
number is right justified. I use the Reference Page
<$elementonly>(tab)<$pagenum>. When the text is just long enough that
it "runs into" the page number the page number wraps to the next line
instead of the text "breaking" and then wrapping. Here's an example of what
I mean:

ILS or ILS/RADAR RWY 26L...177
SID(VECTOR) NON JET RICHMOND.
178
SID(VECTOR) VANCOUVER..179
NOISE ABATEMENT (pg 1)180

Is there a way to detect the conflict and "break" the text for page 178 so
that it reads like this:

ILS or ILS/RADAR RWY 26L...177
SID(VECTOR) NON JET
   RICHMOND178
SID(VECTOR) VANCOUVER..179
NOISE ABATEMENT (pg 1)180

Table of Contents Question - 2

2005-11-23 Thread Art Campbell
I believe you could do that with a FrameScript script that would count
in X number of characters from the start of the line, test to make
sure the cursor was between a space and an alpha, and then insert a
soft return to force the second line. If you don't do FrameScript
yourself, I'd talk to Rick Quatro at frameexpert.com.

Table of Contents Question - 2

2005-11-23 Thread Lester C. Smalley
Chris Despopoulos has a great utility "TOCbreaker" that helps solve this
problem if you're running under Windows. See
http://www.telecable.es/personales/cud/cssIndex.htm where you can get more info
about this (and other tools).

You'll have to make the manual breaks once, but thereafter can easily restore
those same line breaks after generating a new table of contents..

The second tab that Fred told you to add (between <$elementonly> and
<$pagenum> in your ref page TOC spec) will fix 99% of the problems with
long TOC entries that wrap.

Occasionally, you may encounter an instance where you want the line to
break earlier. You can force a line break by going to the *source
heading* for the TOC entry and changing the spaces *after* where you
want the break into non-breaking spaces. If the entire heading won't fit
onto one TOC row, it will break at the last ordinary space.

Merge lists?

2005-11-23 Thread Rick Quatro
The only way the lists would "merge" is by people voting with their feet.
For example, if someone set up a Framers group on Yahoo and people joined
that and unsubscribed from the others, the other lists may eventually die.
But it is risky to unsubscribe from a list if there may still be action on
it. In other words, a single list is a good idea, but I doubt it is going to
happen.

Speaking for myself, if there were a third list started, I would join it and
still remain with the other two.

Table of Contents Question

2005-11-23 Thread Joe Malin
Dear Scott - Mon cher Scott :)

I've run into this situation before, and I think there's no automatic
workaround to it. You should be able to add a tab character to the
second line so that the page number is aligned, but you'll have to do
that by hand. I often had this situation when I wrote books for Oracle
Corp., and that was their standard operating procedure.

I figure that if Oracle's entire cadre of FM documentation production
specialists can't come up with a solution, there isn't one.
