If that sound as if it may be the situation, include the graphic
file in the package you send

and in the same directory hierarchy as the original file and graphic.
In otherwords, if the graphic was in a directory two levels removed

easiest way to do this is to zip up the directory and all

OK...follow along..I have a book with 5 new files. They've had their styles
imported from a template file or previous product file.

When I generate a new TOC in the book, I get the Set Up Table of Contents

What I'm trying to do is get the xxTOC styles to appear on the left pane

RE: How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of ContentsInclude Paragraphs Tagged

2006-07-19 Thread Ridder, Fred
You don't want to do that unless you're generating some
strange sort of meta-TOC. What you want to list in the
Include pane are the *document* paragraph tags that
you want to include as entries in the TOC. When you
generated the TOC, the file you get will contain all of the
paragraphs that match the include tag names, packaged
in paragraphs that have the TOC suffix. You'd only want to
include xxxTOC paragraphs in the TOC setup if you were
extracting the contents of a generated TOC into a new,
meta-TOC.

Or maybe I don't know what your real question is?

2006-07-19 Thread Joe Malin
You have to move the styles manually, even if the template TOC file had
styles set up from before. My guess is that FM clears out the old
information as a feature; it only allows you to add paragraph tags
that are in your existing files, so it must first clear out everything
that was there from before.

Karen...no, it doesn't.

1) I have a book, named Test, with three files:
   TestFile1
   TestFile2
   TestFile3

   No TOC yet

2) In the book, I select Add - Table of Contents. I do
not move any styles, just click the Add button.

   It creates TestTOC.fm

3) I open an existing TOC, we'll call it mpls_install_guideTOC.fm
4) I save it as c:\temp\TestTOC.fm and say its OK to overwrite
5) Return back to test.book, select Edit - Update Book
6) Click all option except Apply Master Page, the testTOC is in
generate, and click Update.
7) Highlight the file testTOC.fm, right click and select Set Up table of
Contents

No styleas are in the left side pane.

Why not?

Re: Can't use my scroll wheel in FM 7 on Mac in Classic

2006-07-19 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, Steve:

Thanks for your reply.

I just gave USB Overdrive a test. After installing it and restarting,
it seemed that FM hung, but it might have been that I just didn't set
anything in the USB Overdrive control panel.

I think the best clue in your note is about installing under Classic.
I probably need to install the MS Mouse software under Classic or
restart in 9.22 and install it, then go back to OS X and Classic.

Thanks, again.

Looking for a technique for applying conditionals

2006-07-19 Thread rebecca officer
I'd like to echo what Richard said about not conditioning individual
words, from painful experience. We started off with quite a lot of
part-sentences conditioned and have been gradually removing them,
because they're so much harder to edit.

Another possible approach, especially if you have this phrase multiple
times, is to use a variable. For UNIX define it as "a .tar file", for
Windoze, as "a .zip file", and for both, as "a .tar file (UNIX) or a
.zip file (Windows)".

Cheers, Rebecca

>>> John Posada  19/07/06 08:49 >>>
Hi, guys...I'm reworking our boilerplate to allow a more accurate
application of our conditional settings from the perspective of
operating systems.

Our applications support anywhere from one to four operatings systems
(Window, Solaris, Linux, and HP-UX). Sometimes we are specific
between the four and sometimes we group the last three under the
catch-all of UNIX. (sorry, open sourcers...this aint gonna change)

My issue: I have some instances where they are listed in a bullet
list, which makes it easy to apply the conditionals as I need them.
However, some instances use OS specific references in a sentence.
Following is an example of one.

-
This utility collects version information and saves
the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to
a .tar file (UNIX) or a .zip file (Windows).
-

I'm looking for a way to apply conditionals so that when applied, the
sentence becomes:

-
This utility collects version information and saves
   the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to
   a .tar file (UNIX).

and

This utility collects version information and saves
   the /conf, /local, /rules, and /setup directories to
   a .zip file (Windows).
---

The tricky part is the word "or". When both OSs are used, the 'or"
has its place. However, when either OS is used to the exclusion of
the other, the "or" should be removed.

Short of rewriting the paragraph, has anyone worked out how to deal
with this situation?

Mif2Go won't create graphics

I don't know that this is the problem, but your
 GraphicExportFormat=JPEG

line doesn't match the syntax that the manual specifies.

I think the entry needs to be JPG.

Can't use my scroll wheel in FM 7 on Mac in Classic

2006-07-19 Thread Peter Gold
I'm using a new (to me) Mac PowerBook. On my other PowerBook, same OS X 10.3.9,
same Classic 9.22, I can scroll in FM with any of my scroll-wheeled mice. On
this new machine, though, I can't. I can't remember installing any special
software for the older machine, other than the MS Mouse/Mac software, and I
don't see anything in the System Preferences Mouse/Trackpad or MS Mouse control
panels, or in the applications or utilities folders.

Any suggestions?

Most likely it's the configuration of the MS mouse software. However, I note
you say 'Control panels': for Classic, you should control your mouse from OS X
System Preferences, and remove the OS 9 Mouse control panel.

I use USB Overdrive, works just fine.

For FrameMaker, it's worth binding a few extra keys, such as Wheel Up and Wheel
Down to command-[ and command-] - this gives you the nice ability to scroll
through panes in the Character and Paragraph Designer dialogs with the mouse
wheel.

USB Overdrive is a lot more versatile than any Microsoft or Logitech mouse
software that I've seen. It was only bettered by the late lamented Kensington
four-button mouse, the one that had all the buttons on the top (as opposed to
the mice they make today, which appear to be intended for intergalactic aliens
with two opposing thumbs).

Can't send FM file

2006-07-19 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Is "File > Save As" and going with PDF not going to be "doable" in this case?
That's likely the easiest way.

If not, the other suggestions are good. Of course, you can tell them to ignore
it on the receiving end. Then they can do edits as they see fit, save and
return the file. When you put the file where it "belongs" you can see the image
again.

If you have a previous TOC version that you like:

1. Generate new TOC. Save the file and close.
2. Open old TOC. Save As new TOC file name.
3. Regenerate TOC.

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of Contents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

2006-07-19 Thread Ridder, Fred
You don't want to do that unless you're generating some
strange sort of meta-TOC. What you want to list in the
Include pane are the *document* paragraph tags that
you want to include as entries in the TOC. When you
generated the TOC, the file you get will contain all of the
paragraphs that match the "include" tag names, packaged
in paragraphs that have the TOC suffix. You'd only want to
include xxxTOC paragraphs in the TOC setup if you were
extracting the contents of a generated TOC into a new,
meta-TOC.

Or maybe I don't know what your real question is?

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Karen...no, it doesn't.

1) I have a book, named Test, with three files:

2) In the book, I select Add -> Table of Contents. I do

   It creates TestTOC.fm

3) I open an existing TOC, we'll call it mpls_install_guideTOC.fm
4) I save it as c:\temp\TestTOC.fm and say its OK to overwrite
5) Return back to test.book, select Edit -> Update Book
6) Click all option except Apply Master Page, the testTOC is in

7) Highlight the file testTOC.fm, right click and select Set Up table

No styleas are in the left side pane.

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of Contents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

2006-07-19 Thread Joe Malin
Why do you want TOC styles? This isn't clear. The TOC styles are
automatically created by FM in the TOC file itself; you use them to
format paragraphs in the TOC. You *don't* use them to include paragraph
tags from other files.

Basically, it goes like this:
1. You create a TOC using Setup Table of Contents, and include all the
regular paragraph tags from the individual files
that you want represented in the TOC. So if you have ChapterTitle,
H1, H2, and H3 as paragraph tags for the chapter
title and heading 1-3, you'd include those in the left-hand column.
2. When you generate the TOC, FM automatically adds these paragraph tags
to the TOC file:
   ChapterTitleTOC
   H1TOC
   H2TOC
   H3TOC
3. FM also adds a reference page to the TOC file called "TOC". On this
page, it adds 4 lines that start out looking
   something like
   <$pagenum>
If you click in a line, you'll see that it has one of the paragraph
tags listed in the preceding step 2.
The line works like an autonumber format, and governs how an entry
will appear in the TOC. For example, if you put
   in the following line

   )<$paranum>)<$paratext>) <$pagenum>

(the parentheses stand for tab marks)

and then tag it with the paragraph tag "ChapterTItleTOC", then in
your TOC, the chapter title entries will start
tabbed in from the starting point, and will consist of the chapter
number, the title, two spaces, and then the
   page number in bold.
4. FM maintains the association between an ordinary paragraph tag in
your files and its TOC entry by having the TOC
entry's paragraph tag be TOC. You can't change this. If
you change ChapterTitleTOC to UghTOC and then
delete ChapterTitleTOC, FM will just automatically create another
one.

As you can see, it makes no sense to have paragraph tags ending in "TOC"
in the Setup Table of Contents dialog box.

By the way, FM has a somewhat hidden shortcut for moving all the entries
from one column to another (Oracle calls this type of control a
"shuttle", and you "shuttle" an entry between columns using the shuttle
buttons.) Hold down the shift key, and then click the arrow key. This
will move *everything*. The best place to use this is in the Generate
Acrobat Data dialog box, to clear out the paragraph tags FM puts into
your PDF before you add what you want.

You have to move the styles manually, even if the template TOC file had
styles set up from before. My guess is that FM clears out the old
information as a "feature"; it only allows you to add paragraph tags
that are in your existing files, so it must first clear out everything
that was there from before.

Can't use my scroll wheel in FM 7 on Mac in Classic

2006-07-19 Thread Peter Gold

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table ofContents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

2006-07-19 Thread Huntley Eshenroder
Joe,

We are converting a bunch of books from one template to another. We don't
want to manually specify the paragraphs formats that are included in the TOC
for each book by moving them around in the Set Up Table of Contents dialog.
This information is *not* pulled in by importing styles from a template. As
far as we've seen, Karen's method is the only one that works.

Sorta defeats the purpose of a TOC template.

Not those pesky fonts...

2006-07-19 Thread John Steiner
Hi, I have the UNIX/Windows cross-platform font switching problem.
I'm contracting for a company that normally keeps their docs on a UNIX
server, but I work on them on my laptop.

Rather than remembering/not remembering missing font names, I'd just like to
install Helvetica, Times Roman, and perhaps a couple other fonts that are
similarly in the public domain and commonly seen on the UNIX platform.
However, when I do an internet search on fonts, I get a huge number of
vendors that want to sell me a package of 7,893 (or so) fonts for 69.95 (or
so). Basically a flood of dross. Does anyone have any suggestions as to
where I get just a few of the common fonts that don't come standard on the
Windows platform (like helv, cour, and so forth)?

John
