Hi Charles If all your system variables have the same value in all files in the book, you can make an import-from FM file and delete the variables you don't want, then import variable definitions from that file. Problem is, you can't delete system variables. But you can with a "mif fragment".

You only need to muck with MIF files when importing variable formats because FM has this really annoying feature of not letting you remove the system variables, so a MIF fragment is the only way to make a "template" that doesn't have them. That's the problem with the "third variant" from Grant and

I have a problem when someone with version 8 uses the template I created with version 7.2. The Bullet level two does not appear as a round bullet. It appears as an open quotation mark. Any ideas what is causing that and how to fix it? Currently, she has fixed the file by copying in a bullet from a

Most likely, whatever character you used for the bullet in 7.x has a different glyph attached to it in the Unicode supporting FM 8.x. "Fixing" it would involve picking a new character from a font with a lower mapping number that's the same in both 7.x and 8.x, such as the default bullet. Cheers,

I would strongly concur with Art on this one. This problem of the "changing bullet" is only one of a number of anomalies that one will likely encounter migrating to FrameMaker 8 from any earlier release. FrameMaker 8 uses Unicode. There is one and only one "code point" for any specific character.
