Re: 6 CDs remaining for 30 day trial of Adobe TCS2 - all gone!

2009-10-28 Thread Jenny Greenleaf
These are readily available from Adobe. I got one and gave it to my
client in case I get hit by a truck. Since they don't have Frame 9
anywhere in the office (it comes in with me and my laptop), they'd be
in a jam if they needed to get something done quickly and I was
incapacitated. With the trial CD, they can run it and get something
done while going through the process to order a copy.

I thought it was a nice gesture to be able to make. The client
appreciates it. It's well worth having one of these around!

Maximum number of variables in FM?

Hi Matt, Rick, and Everyone,

What the maximum number of user variables that can be created in FM 8? The FM

Re: Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
Applying Keep with Next in this way is basically making exceptions to
the paragraph styles. It's not the type of thing they would make a
shortcut key for. If you want a shortcut key, you might consider adding
a style for the end of the page. You could call it EndOfPage, and define
it with 600 points after the paragraph. This forces the rest of the text
to the next page without making an exception to any style. Then you
could use F9,e,n,ENTER to apply the style.

Re: Conditionalizing screens shots in FrameMaker 9.0/ePublisherPro

2009-10-28 Thread Art Campbell
It's pretty easy, but I'd use an Anchor paragraph tag that doesn't contain
text. Its only purpose is to provide a spot outside text paragraphs to hang
an anchored frame or table.
Once these are in place, you can easily conditionalize the para tag and the
only effect is to hide the anchored frame (or table).
I usually set mine to a font size of 2 pt so they don't take up much room,
and I also usually make them red and use a special margin so they stand out
on screen.

in the EpublisherPro generated HTML online help version. I've enabled the
PDF options in EpublisherPro so customers can access the PDF version of the
 book from the online help.

WebWorks tech support recommends I conditionalize the anchored screens in
my FrameMaker book chapters, hide them, print to PDF, and replace the
auto-generated PDF file that EpublisherPro creates with this file.

I tested a chapter of my book and can see how this will work. However,
before I go ahead with this method, I thought I'd see if anyone else has
done it this way - or knows of a better way and can share their experiences.

 Thanks for your help!

The keep with next pgf property does not have a built-in shortcut (and as
far as I know it cannot be assigned a custom one).

However, if you happen to have FrameScript, you can easily set-up a
shortcut which turns this property on, or toggles its current state (I will
gladly send you the necessary script/instructions, if needed).

Re: Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Peter Gold
You can look for keystroke commands in the *.cfg files in your
FrameMaker installation directory. There may be one for applying Keep
With Next Paragraph. You can learn about customizing these files here:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/framemaker/pdfs/Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf

If it's not available through a customized menu, and you don't want to
use a dedicated paragraph format, you can try a kludge like this:

NOTE: Tap the keys in order, one by one. Case is important.
NOTE: ! means the Escape key

! o p d (opens paragraph designer with the current paragraph style active)

Page Down or Page Up to the Pagination properties panel of the designer

Tab through the panel to the Keep With area and select the Next option

Tab through the panel to Apply (not Update All)

It's probably more work than you'd likeG.

Actually, it *is* the type of thing they would make a shortcut key for,
but apparently didn't.

There are shortcuts for placing a pgf at top of:
Page (Esc j P)
Column (Esc j C)
Left Page (Esc j L)
Right page (Esc j R)

and for aligning:
centre (Esc j c)
left (Esc j l)
right (Esc j r)
full (Esc j f)

-- all of which are overrides. But oddly, there doesn't seem to be a
shortcut for Keep With Next.

Not that it matters to me. I don't use overrides except in one-offs
like brochure layouts; they cause too much trouble in books.

Re: Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Ian Hawkins
As others have said, there isn't a key combination that will do this
directly. However, you can ease the pain a little.

- Type either CTRL+M (single key combination) or ESC o p d (four
separate characters) to open the paragraph designer.

- Select the Pagination tab. If you are doing a lot of this, just leave
the paragraph designer open on that tab.

- Type ALT+n to toggle the Next Pgf selection.

- By default, the Apply button should be active, with a bold outline. If
so, press ENTER. Otherwise press ALT+a.

Try it a few times; it's really not that much trouble, and a lot easier
than using the mouse. When the paragraph designer is already open on the
right tab, it's only three keystrokes: CTRL+M, ALT+n, ENTER.

 Hi Jenny,

Could you tell me how to get it from Adobe? I am in India. I visited
www.adobe.com and could not find any link for getting the 30-day
 trial.

Or: http://www.runaware.com/clients/adobe/techsuite/

(which you eventually (*eventually!*) get to from adobe.com, Products menu, All

(hidden as the last link on the page or off to the right under Next Steps.
Sheesh.)

Mif2Go: LOT and LOF accessible by search in HTML Help output

2009-10-28 Thread Jim Owens
This is a weird one -- any clues would be appreciated.

I'm generating HTML Help using Mif2GO and two conditionalized Frame 9
books. I don't want the LOT or LOF in the outputs, so I've set
UseFrameGenFiles=No.

Nevertheless, when I search for terms such as figure or table in the
Help, the returned list of topics may or may not include a List of
Figures or List of Tables chapter. For one of the books, this does not
happen at all. For the oher book, if I set conditions one way, I see the
LOT in the output but not the LOF; if I set them another way, I see the
LOF but not the LOT.

Any ideas?

2009-10-28 Thread David Spreadbury
Jim,
Just remove the generated files from the book before setting up Mif2Go.
Mif2Go can create the generated files selected if you so choose in the setup
dialog.

The only caveat, if you are working with the sole set of source files, is
not to save the book when you are done. I always work with a copy of the
source, in the event I forgot that last step.

RE: Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread Diane Gaskill
Hi Rick,

10,000? That's considerably more than I expected. Thanks lots for doing that.
I've just gotta make the time to learn FS. :-)

I'm not sure how many we need, maybe 100 or so. We're trying to come up with a
common set of variables that we can use across the department for all the
versions of the products we document. This is part of our content modeling and
reusability plan. We also single source some of the docs to RH and also
rebrand some of our our docs for an OEM customer. Challenging, for sure.

Now all we have to do is make sure that the variables save in XML. According
to the FM help, they do. As you know, one of our OEMs uses Arbortext and we use
a DocBook template that creates XML that they can import. Even more
challenging, to put it nicely, because profile attribute settings (the DocBook
XML equivalent of conditional text) cannot be imported across the book from one
chapter like conditional text can. I'm told that there is no function in the
FDK that can do this, so apparently FS cannot solve this problem.

Thanks again.

Re: Mif2Go: LOT and LOF accessible by search in HTML Help output

2009-10-28 Thread Jim Owens
That's a useful workaround, but the LOT and LOF shouldn't show up in the
output, and usually they don't.

Whatever caused the problem, it may have gone away. The output folders
contain HTML files for the LOT or LOF, and these files are picked up by
the HHP project, but the LOT and LOF files have an older date. At some
point they were generated, but they're no longer being generated. They
were just never removed from the output directory.

I'll put it down to a user error of some sort, delete them, and hope
they don't get generated again somehow.

RE: Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread Matt Sullivan
Your variables will export out. One way is to address them in the Structured
Application (the Read/Write Rules) to configure them the way your DTD wants
them. (as either internal entities or as external entities defined in a/the
DTD.

That'll make them transfer in and out of FM properly.

2009-10-28 Thread Syed.Hosain
Hi, Diane.

I have over 700 variables in one of my documents ... no problem at all!
In case anyone wonders why I have so many: has to do with a set of
numeric values in one of my specs that are refered to in multiple places
- fwiw, it is better to be consistent everywhere, than wrong in even one
place! So, variables is the answer. :)

Anyway, the allowed number is therefore higher than that, I suspect.

Setting FM markers for external links

2009-10-28 Thread Jon Harvey
Everyone,

Our processes include importing FM 9.0 files into MadCap Flare to create
online help. Many of these docs we develop in FrameMaker include URLs to
Web pages that we would like to have open in their own browser window
(not in the online help window). The problem is that each time we import
into Flare, we have to add a target=myURL.htm attribute to each a
tag. Is there a hypertext marker in FM that will enable us to set it
and forget it so we don't have to change the a tag each time? I've
tried solving this problem on the Flare side by modifying the CSS but
there is apparently no such CSS attribute that will do this.

These are readily available from Adobe. I got one and gave it to my?
client in case I get hit by a truck. Since they don't have Frame 9?
anywhere in the office (it comes in with me and my laptop), they'd be?
in a jam if they needed to get something done quickly and I was?
incapacitated. With the trial CD, they can run it and get something?
done while going through the process to order a copy.

I thought it was a nice gesture to be able to make. The client?
appreciates it. It's well worth having one of these around!

Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
Applying Keep with Next in this way is basically making exceptions to
the paragraph styles. It's not the type of thing they would make a
shortcut key for. If you want a shortcut key, you might consider adding
a style for the end of the page. You could call it EndOfPage, and define
it with 600 points after the paragraph. This forces the rest of the text
to the next page without making an exception to any style. Then you
could use "F9,e,n,ENTER" to apply the style.

Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Diane,

I am not sure what the limit is, but I just used this little code snippet to
create 10,000 of them in a blank document, and it seemed to work fine.

Loop While(i <= 1) LoopVar(i) Init(1) Incr(1)
  New VariableFormat DocObject(ActiveDoc) Name('Variable'+i);
EndLoop

How many do you need?

Hi Matt, Rick, and Everyone,

What the maximum number of user variables that can be created in FM 8? The FM

255, but does not specify the maximum number of variables.

Conditionalizing screens shots in FrameMaker 9.0/ePublisherPro

2009-10-28 Thread Art Campbell
It's pretty easy, but I'd use an Anchor paragraph tag that doesn't contain
text. Its only purpose is to provide a spot outside text paragraphs to hang
an anchored frame or table.
Once these are in place, you can easily conditionalize the para tag and the
only effect is to hide the anchored frame (or table).
I usually set mine to a font size of 2 pt so they don't take up much room,
and I also usually make them red and use a special margin so they stand out
on screen.

The "keep with next pgf" property does not have a built-in shortcut (and as
far as I know it cannot be assigned a custom one).

However, if you happen to have FrameScript, you can easily set-up a
shortcut which turns this property on, or toggles its current state (I will
gladly send you the necessary script/instructions, if needed).

Key combo for Keep with Next?

2009-10-28 Thread Peter Gold
You can look for keystroke commands in the *.cfg files in your
FrameMaker installation directory. There may be one for applying Keep
With Next Paragraph. You can learn about customizing these files here:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/framemaker/pdfs/Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf

If it's not available through a customized menu, and you don't want to
use a dedicated paragraph format, you can try a kludge like this:

NOTE: Tap the keys in order, one by one. Case is important.
NOTE: ! means the Escape key

! o p d (opens paragraph designer with the current paragraph style active)

Page Down or Page Up to the Pagination properties panel of the designer

Tab through the panel to the Keep With area and select the Next option

Tab through the panel to Apply (not Update All)

It's probably more work than you'd like.

Actually, it *is* the type of thing they would make a shortcut key for,
but apparently didn't.

There are shortcuts for placing a pgf at top of:
Page (Esc j P)
Column (Esc j C)
Left Page (Esc j L)
Right page (Esc j R)

and for aligning:
centre (Esc j c)
left (Esc j l)
right (Esc j r)
full (Esc j f)

-- all of which are overrides. But oddly, there doesn't seem to be a
shortcut for Keep With Next.

Not that it matters to me. I don't use overrides except in one-offs
like brochure layouts; they cause too much trouble in books.

Key combo for Keep with Next?

This will work from most FrameMaker dialogs.

I hope they haven't changed any of these for FM 9.

UseFrameGenFiles=No.

Nevertheless, when I search for terms such as "figure" or "table" in the
Help, the returned list of topics may or may not include a List of
Figures or List of Tables chapter. For one of the books, this does not
happen at all. For the oher book, if I set conditions one way, I see the
LOT in the output but not the LOF; if I set them another way, I see the
LOF but not the LOT.

Any ideas?

Jim,
Just remove the generated files from the book before setting up Mif2Go.
Mif2Go can create the generated files selected if you so choose in the setup
dialog.

The only caveat, if you are working with the sole set of source files, is
not to save the book when you are done. I always work with a copy of the
source, in the event I forgot that last step.

Maximum number of variables in FM?

Mif2Go: LOT and LOF accessible by search in HTML Help output

2009-10-28 Thread Jim Owens
That's a useful workaround, but the LOT and LOF shouldn't show up in the
output, and usually they don't.

Whatever caused the problem, it may have gone away. The output folders
contain HTML files for the LOT or LOF, and these files are picked up by
the HHP project, but the LOT and LOF files have an older date. At some
point they were generated, but they're no longer being generated. They
were just never removed from the output directory.

I'll put it down to a user error of some sort, delete them, and hope
they don't get generated again somehow.

I suspect that while fumbling around in the new FM9 interface, I

Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread Matt Sullivan
Your variables will export out. One way is to address them in the Structured
Application (the Read/Write Rules) to configure them the way your DTD wants
them. (as either internal entities or as external entities defined in a/the
DTD.

That'll make them transfer in and out of FM properly.

What the maximum number of user variables that can be created in FM 8? The
FM help says that the maximum number of characters in a variable definition
is 255, but does not specify the maximum number of variables.

Thanks,
Diane

Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net

The problem is that each time we import
into Flare, we have to add a target="myURL.htm" attribute to each
tag. Is there a hypertext marker in FM that will enable us to "set it
and forget it" so we don't have to change the tag each time? I've
tried solving this problem on the Flare side by modifying the CSS but
there is apparently no such CSS attribute that will do this.

Diane,
I'm not sure what you mean here. It is true that importing formats from
one document to others (including those in a book) does not import the
definition of attribute expressions used by filter-by-attribute; nor does
it apply the filter used in the source to the destination documents.
However, at least in FM9, the FDK can do so.

Captivate User Group?

2009-10-28 Thread barry.kief...@jeppesen.com
Is there a group like this just for Captivate?

Like so many tech writers, I am asked at times to create tutorials and
training materials.

I have learned so much just monitoring this list, a captivate list would
be the bees knees.

Captivate User Group?

2009-10-28 Thread Writer
There seems to be one on Yahoo groups, but it doesn't look very active:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/captivateusergroup/

There is also the Denver Metro E-learners Developers group:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dmeld/

And finally, the Captivate forum on the Adobe site:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_captivate

HTH or at least gets you started,

Maximum number of variables in FM?

2009-10-28 Thread Diane Gaskill
Hi Lynne,

If I read your message correctly, FM9 has a function in the FDK that can
import filter-by-attribute settings. Please confirm. This will solve a
major problem for us.

Thanks lots,
Diane

Crossreferences in text frames in anchored frames--way to preserve them when converting to HTML?

2009-10-28 Thread Brian C. Keith
Is there a way to preserve crossreferences in text frames in anchored
frames, which FM converts to raster images in converted HTML?

I have a bunch of legacy FM source files that contain crossreferences in
anchored frames, and they're lost when I use the FM's built-in
FM-to-HTML conversion tool as well as WebWorks FM-to-HTML conversion tool.

Does anyone know of a way that I can retain these crossreferences when
converting to HTML? I've searched the Web to no avail. Suggestions? Help?

Thanks!

Cursor blink rate affects FrameMaker stability?

2009-10-28 Thread JX Consulting

Three writers on my team reported too-frequent crashes in FrameMaker
8, especially notable because it crashed disproportionately during
idle time. (As opposed to crashes during one of our extremely complex
FrameScripts that run 20 minutes or more... those usually completed
fine.) We do not have any fancy keystroke interception code in
FrameScript. Well, not yet anyway, I have a plan for some soon. :-)
So, I wouldn't expect that any of our code affects this Idle-Crash
issue. So, anyway i noticed one of the writers had a cursor that was
blinking weird, irregularly. I checked the windows setting in: Start
-> Control Panel -> Keyboard -> Cursor Blink Rate.

His blink rate was set to the MAXIMUM setting. I set it down a couple
notches. And his crashing problem went away! The two other writers
checked their setting for that, and theirs were set to the MINIMUM
setting (no blink). They set theirs UP a couple notches. And their
crashing problems reportedly also went away too!

Perhaps this is superstitious, but these three writers believe this
change was what made stability improve. It's possible this issue is
specific to folks with FrameScript, I have no idea. We all use
FrameScript. I could easily imagine this being a system event Idle
issue either in FrameMaker, FrameScript, or both.

Anyway, if you are having crashing problems in FrameMaker, try setting
this setting to somewhere in the *middle* of the range and see if that
helps. If this change reduces your crashes noticably, PLEASE REPLY on
the forum to this post with more information about your configuration.
For example, that would clarify whether this is unique to FM8 or
affects FM9 also, and whether this affects non-FrameScript users!

Configuration for the team:
* Win XP SP3 32bit
(except 1 writer w/ 64bit, who was 1 of the 3 with the issue)
* FrameMaker 8.0p277
* FrameScript 5.2R1 (some might be R2)

For the record, there are other writers on the team, including me, who
weren't experiencing these crashes. At least two of us had middle-of-
the-range settings for this value (and no "idle time" crashes), I'm
not sure about the other two writers.

problem with TOC colors

2009-10-28 Thread stre...@rcn.com
I just moved a series of books to a new template and for some reason, some of
the TOC entries in one of the books appear red. They should all be blue. The
hyperlink works.

Any ideas what's wrong or how to fix it?

Thanks.
