Can anyone point me to a getting started guide or similar for FM 9.0, or
other useful help for getting going with FM 9.0?

I second everything Art said, especially the benefits of having a second
monitor. I've had multiple monitors for a long time and love it. It
increases productivity everywhere, not just in FM.

Here's a video tutorial on the new FM9 interface that made a huge
difference
for me when I upgraded:

For a clipboard utility, I can also recommend Yankee Clipper III. I've
used that utility and its predecessor for years. Also just read a great
review of Ditto, which I'll be taking for a test drive. Both are free.

I misunderstood what you were saying -- you're asking about each unique
object reference, but I read what you wrote to mean the global
definitions of the type of object.

And, as far as:
Another idea I use is to define one of the cross-refs and copy+paste it
into an FM utility document I keep open on the side in a small window
and copy+paste from there every time I need it again as and when I meet
a repeat instance.

Download a copy of ClipMate, Great utility and it'll let you do other
stuff too. Quicker than cutting and pasting between FM docs.

I think this is standard fare in programmer's and API reference
guides. So they want what they see elsewhere.

could become a potential maintenance nightmare.
That is definitely a point. It never occurred to me before; maybe
because none such document that I ever worked on ever actually
realized that horrifying potential in practice.

I think it could be more likely to be a maintenance nightmare if this
API had a reputation for its objects' names being changed every now
and again, as well as their positions in the document being changed.
However, in the year and half I have known this API document it has
only ever grown---it is now over 700 pages long---it has never
*changed*. But you know what - I could them about this.

The SME seems to be under the impression that if a reader, probably
another coder, will forget what a basic programming object is in less
than 90 seconds... If the SME forgets, there may be a reason to do it,

but if he or she can hold on to the concept for an hour or so, your
 readers probably can.

As I mentioned, I think this is standard fare in programmer's and API
reference guides, and at 720 pages there is plenty to forget...

If I had to do this, I'd probably use a glossary entry for these
  because
they are, in fact, definitions and glossary entries are lighter
weight.

I will have to check that out. Thanks.

With all that said, if you must do this, you _should_ be able to
  define
one of the cross-refs and embed it with its text string hotspot. Then
copy the word, including the cross-ref marker (you have text objects
 turned on,
right?) and do a search-and-replace for the text string, pasting from
 the clipboard.

Thanks for the idea. That's useful in cases where the same text is
repeated many times. In the updates to this document, all the
cross-refs are different. (At 720 pages, there are so many link
targets to choose from, why repeat the same ones...?! ha ha.)

Another idea I use is to define one of the cross-refs and copy+paste

Hi, Rick.

One other possibility ... I use Beyond Compare 3 from
http://www.scootersoftware.com/ for disk-to-disk transfers and compares, etc. I
_really_ like this tool a lot and use it quite often for manual backups - I
bought three licenses for my two personal and one work computer. As I recall,
there is a trial version which gives you limited usability that allows you
determine if it suits your task or not, but I am not entirely sure of this.

Beyond Compare 3 can be run as Administrator and then it will handle the
access denied problem without difficulty - assuming it is a permissions issue,
of course. If the drive is bad, then ... :(

Also, I would recommend your friend get a backup program that regularly copies
files to an external USB disk - they are ultra cheap nowadays (TigerDirect had
a 1.5G external for under $100 recently! Then computer failures are not an
issue - the files are available in a form that can be easily read in elsewhere.

Change the permissions for the account you log in as to Full Control.

there may be a reason to do it, but if he or she can hold on to the concept
for an hour or so, your readers probably can.

If I had to do this, I'd probably use a glossary entry for these because
they are, in fact, definitions and glossary entries are lighter weight.

With all that said, if you must do this, you _should_ be able to define one
of the cross-refs and embed it with its text string hotspot. Then copy the
word, including the cross-ref marker (you have text objects turned on,
right?) and do a search-and-replace for the text string, pasting from the
 clipboard.

 Hi all,

I just a received some whole new sections for updating an FM book. The
 book
is a large reference guide for an API. Every other word in the new
 material
is in fact the name of some software object (function, structure, or type)
that's defined somewhere else as its own section. The new material talks
about those already defined software objects and how to use them. So the
 SME
wants every mentioning of those already defined software objects to be
converted to a cross-reference. (Anyone who has documented APIs knows what
 I
am talking about.) Is there some sort of tool that allows you to
 type+select
the name of the section (function) or even just its legal number and then
click, and hey presto, the cross-reference appears?

Once, during a slow period, I programmed exactly that tool for Word using
VBA. Took me about a week. Works great.

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread David Farbey
I am using FM 8.0p277 (installed as part of TCS 1) on Win XP Pro.

In the recent past I have had no problem importing *.png graphic files into
FrameMaker 8.

Today I tried to import a *.png file and received an error message: “The
filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation.” I can
import files in other formats such as *.jpg.

I had a quick look on the Adobe support forum, but the only references to
this error message appear to be related to importing PDF documents into
FrameMaker 7.

Any ideas for resolving this issue would be gratefully received.

Thanks

David

Re: [framescript-users] OT: File Permissions

2010-06-16 Thread Steve Johnson
What is the OS? Might not make much difference though.

If you have access to the old computer, log in as the owner of the
Documents and Settings folder, then create another folder, share that
folder, give the Everyone group Full access rights to it, and copy it.

Documents and Settings is owned by someone and the reason you're
getting the access error most likely is you're trying to copy it as
someone else. I'm not positive but I believe when you try to copy
using a file share, the user is in the Everyone group.

The other person's suggestion seems reasonable also.

 Hello Framers,

Excuse the off-topic post, but I need a little direction with copying files
from a hard drive. I friend gave me a hard drive from his disabled
 computer.
He wants his files from the Document and Settings folder. I put the hard
drive in my computer and attempted to copy the Document and Settings folder
to my hard drive. I am getting Access Denied messages. I can change the
permissions for each individual folder, but there must be a way for me to
copy all of the folders without messing with the permissions. Any advice
would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

I've had the same experience as Art. It's been a while, so I don't remember the
source application of the graphics, but its PNG output frequently couldn't be
imported into FM. Opening the files in PaintShop Pro and resaving it always
solved the problem.

RE: FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread Fred Ridder

I think Art is on the right track for a solution. I seem to recall some
previous discussions of some version(s) of FM having a problem with one
specific PNG color depth option, and the solution was to resave the graphic
from an image editor. For this purpose, the editor in most screenshot
applications (e.g. Snagit) whould work as well as any phancy photo phiddler
(e.g. PhotoShop) you might have available to you.

Turn off tabbed docs/books and all pods panels disappear

2010-06-16 Thread Pat Christenson

Hi -

I can't search the Archives so I apologize if this has already been
discussed. Im running FrameMaker 9.0p250 Windows XP under Fusion 2
on a Mac. I didn't like tabbed doc windows so I turned that off in
Preferences. Suddenly nothing would access pods or panels such as
Paragraph Designer. I tried keyboard shortcuts, dropdown menus, right-
click -- NOTHING. They all came back when I re-enabled tabbing.

Is this happening to anyone else? Any solutions?

I've only been using FM 9 a couple weeks and still having trouble
adjusting to the new interface. Argh.

Thanks in advance.

Your E-Mail:
Re: paragraph tag report?

The Format List plugin, part of the Squidds Toolbox is the best at this.

Unlike the other suggestions, it puts the results in a table, so that
you
can look at all your paragraph formats in a glance. Scanning a row will
tell
you the definition of a given tag. Scanning a column will compare the
setting in all the tags.

Unfortunately, the Squids site is an awful mess. It's a German site with

English translations that make it even worse. So finding what you want
there
is pure hell. You can buy the whole Toolbox or just the individual
tools,
but finding the list of individual modules isn't easy-- and every time I
do,
they change the danged links! Here's a link for the whole Toolbox, with
old
versions at the bottom of the page. You'll have to hunt on your own to
find
the individual modules, since they are no longer in the location I had
linked. Format List is worth it, if you can find it.

Client Needs FrameMaker -- Eclipse Help provider

2010-06-16 Thread Tori Muir
My apologies if this is not the sort of post one is supposed to send to
this list, but there are so many deeply knowledgeable folks here that I
suspect it would be a far better source of referrals/responses than
anywhere else we can try.

A client needs someone who can turn FrameMaker manuals into Eclipse
help. Naturally, they have only informed us of this *now*, a week from
the software ship date (anyone surprised? No, I didn't think so).
They've had poor luck using job boards -- a tsunami of
dubiously-qualified respondents, and not enough time to evaluate. Any
recommendations on how to find a provider? I don't think geography is a
consideration, this could all be done remotely.

Thanks for any recommendations of boards/services/individuals!

I second everything Art said, especially the benefits of having a second
monitor. I've had multiple monitors for a long time and love it. It
increases productivity everywhere, not just in FM.

Here's a video tutorial on the new FM9 interface that made a huge
difference
for me when I upgraded:

Maybe you need to log in as admin and change the file ownership from there
if you don't have the rights with your regular login?

FM72. Tool to quickly makes loads of cross-refs?

2010-06-16 Thread Pinkham, Jim
For a clipboard utility, I can also recommend Yankee Clipper III. I've
used that utility and its predecessor for years. Also just read a great
review of Ditto, which I'll be taking for a test drive. Both are free.

Jim

I misunderstood what you were saying -- you're asking about each unique
object reference, but I read what you wrote to mean the global
definitions of the type of object.

And, as far as:
"Another idea I use is to define one of the cross-refs and copy+paste it
into an FM utility document I keep open on the side in a small window
and copy+paste from there every time I need it again as and when I meet
a repeat instance."

Download a copy of ClipMate, Great utility and it'll let you do other
stuff too. Quicker than cutting and pasting between FM docs.

Cheers,
Art

2010-06-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Rick.

One other possibility ... I use "Beyond Compare 3" from
http://www.scootersoftware.com/ for disk-to-disk transfers and compares, etc. I
_really_ like this tool a lot and use it quite often for manual backups - I
bought three licenses for my two personal and one work computer. As I recall,
there is a trial version which gives you limited usability that allows you
determine if it suits your task or not, but I am not entirely sure of this.

Beyond Compare 3 can be "run as Administrator" and then it will handle the
access denied problem without difficulty - assuming it is a permissions issue,

Hello Framers,

Excuse the off-topic post, but I need a little direction with copying files
from a hard drive. I friend gave me a hard drive from his disabled computer.
He wants his files from the Document and Settings folder. I put the hard
drive in my computer and attempted to copy the Document and Settings folder
to my hard drive. I am getting "Access Denied" messages. I can change the
permissions for each individual folder, but there must be a way for me to
copy all of the folders without messing with the permissions. Any advice
would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

I ran into this just last night when I moved my external hard drive
with my iTunes library on it to another machine...

Assuming you have admin rights on your machine, open Windows Explorer
and browse to My Computer.
Right-click the drive in question and choose Properties.
Click the Security tab.
Change the permissions for the account you log in as to Full Control.

You should then be able to use the drive with no issue.

Oh, and with regard to messing up permissions, those are local to your
machine. When you hand the drive back to your friend, his computer's
permissions are used. Permissions are drive-specific but OS-native. :)

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread David Farbey
I am using FM 8.0p277 (installed as part of TCS 1) on Win XP Pro.

In the recent past I have had no problem importing *.png graphic files into
FrameMaker 8.

Today I tried to import a *.png file and received an error message: ?The
filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation.? I can
import files in other formats such as *.jpg.

I had a quick look on the Adobe support forum, but the only references to
this error message appear to be related to importing PDF documents into
FrameMaker 7.

Any ideas for resolving this issue would be gratefully received.

Thanks

David

[framescript-users] OT: File Permissions

2010-06-16 Thread Steve Johnson
What is the OS? Might not make much difference though.

If you have access to the old computer, log in as the owner of the
Documents and Settings folder, then create another folder, share that
folder, give the Everyone group Full access rights to it, and copy it.

Documents and Settings is owned by someone and the reason you're
getting the access error most likely is you're trying to copy it as
someone else. I'm not positive but I believe when you try to copy
using a file share, the user is in the Everyone group.

The other person's suggestion seems reasonable also.

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread Art Campbell
If everything else is working, I'd open the .png with a photo editor other
than the one you used to create it and do a SaveAs PNG again, and try the
import a second time with the new file.

Most times when I've had a problem importing graphics, it's turned out to be
a problem with the source graphic file...

And if your system's been up a while, it wouldn't hurt to clear and reclaim
memory by rebooting

Cheers,
Art

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

I've had the same experience as Art. It's been a while, so I don't remember the
source application of the graphics, but its PNG output frequently couldn't be
imported into FM. Opening the files in PaintShop Pro and resaving it always
solved the problem.

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread Fred Ridder

I think Art is on the right track for a solution. I seem to recall some
previous discussions of some version(s) of FM having a problem with one
specific PNG color depth option, and the solution was to resave the graphic
from an image editor. For this purpose, the editor in most screenshot
applications (e.g. Snagit) whould work as well as any phancy photo phiddler
(e.g. PhotoShop) you might have available to you.

Turn off tabbed docs/books and all pods & panels disappear

2010-06-16 Thread Pat Christenson
Hi -

I can't search the Archives so I apologize if this has already been
discussed. I"m running FrameMaker 9.0p250 Windows XP under Fusion 2
on a Mac. I didn't like tabbed doc windows so I turned that off in
Preferences. Suddenly nothing would access pods or panels such as
Paragraph Designer. I tried keyboard shortcuts, dropdown menus, right-
click -- NOTHING. They all came back when I re-enabled tabbing.

Is this happening to anyone else? Any solutions?

I've only been using FM 9 a couple weeks and still having trouble
adjusting to the new interface. Argh.

Thanks in advance.

Pat Christenson

Client Needs FrameMaker --> Eclipse Help provider

FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file

2010-06-16 Thread Steve Johnson
Can you import the same file into another application? Try saving the
png as a jpg and importing that. Any other pngs you have problems
with?

I wonder if the file wasn't written properly or (less likely) if it
has a bit depth that's too large for Frame to handle.
