Very very old FrameMaker files: file extent

We are about to start on a book revision. The original source files I have here appear to be FrameMaker v 4, or a mix of FrameMaker 4 and FrameMaker 6, and have a .doc file extent. Did old versions of FrameMaker used the .doc extent, or might they have ended up like this by accident? Thanks
