Structured questions

2007-10-03 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Joel:

1. If you click in a text line, it goes blank because the text lines are not
attached to structure. Rather than using a text line or text frame, you
should keep everything connected in the structure. That means adding
elements when more content is needed. If you can clarify which of the Frame
8 templates you are using, I'd be happy to help you figure out the structure
and which element will produce the caption. Our team made the templates so
I am familiar with most of the structures.

2. FrameMaker allows lines to break, unless you use the "hard space" you
mention below. I don't know of a control. You can control text spacing and
things like that to manually modify the text flow.

Good luck,

Kay

Subject: Structured questions

Preface: I am trying to learn Structured Frame, XML and DITA - it's all new
to me.

1. I am using one of Frame 8's structured templates, and I inserted a
graphic. Now I want to add a caption, and I tried using a text line. the
Structure View window goes blank when I click on the text line. Do I need to
create an element to reflect this text line?

2. A general, dumb Frame question: How do I ensure that lines aren't
breaking, other than + Spacebar between words?

Thanks,

JW

Print-out of Structured View window?

2007-08-31 Thread Sales@Bright Path
CUDSPAN used to have a "PrintTree" plug-in. I think I've still got it
somewhere on my machine! It was pretty cool, using indents to print the
whole structure tree for a doc. However, the CUDSPAN site has been down for
months and I don't think it is distributed any more.

Framemaker classes?

2007-03-16 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Dave:

Bright Path Solutions holds classes regularly in our North Carolina location
(structured and regular/unstructured FrameMaker). We also hold classes in
various cities throughout the US and Canada.

We also occassionally hold classes in conjunction with organizations like
the Society for Technical Communication. I believe we have some training
coming up with the STC in Rochester, NY, for example. If you have a local
organization with members interested in a local FrameMaker class, we'd be
happy to speak with their organizer regarding options we offer for a class
close to home.

Our general information is online at
http://www.brightpathsolutions.com/pages/services/training/adobe.html and
each class' page includes date/location information. If you have questions
regarding our class content or locations, please feel free to contact me.

paste special ...text option

2006-10-10 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Pete:

This may be adjusted in the "maker.ini" file within your FrameMaker install
folder. The maker.ini is a text file so you can easily open it in a tool
like Notepad and edit it.

By moving TEXT to the start of the line:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIF, RTF, TEXT

you are able to change Frame's behavior so that a regular Paste will paste
as text and you don't have to do Paste Special.

Good luck,

Kay

PS - backup your maker.ini file before making changes.

Help Finding Engineering Publications???

Schema tools

2006-08-08 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Jon:

You can create directly in FrameMaker as an EDD, then can save as a DTD.
(If you need a schema, you can turn a DTD into a schema using several
tools... My favorite is TurboXML:
http://www.tibco.com/software/metadata/turboxml.jsp .

Or, to create the DTD or schema you can use tools like TurboXML, Oxygen,
etc. Make either a DTD or a schema (depending on what your requirements
are) and then bring the DTD or schema into FrameMaker via File > Structure
Tools > Open DTD (or Open Schema). FrameMaker's EDD is created from that
imported element/attribute data and you can start adding your
formatties/template info.

If you need any additional clarification, feel free to reply.

Good luck,

Hi All,

We would like to begin developing in structured framemaker. My understanding
is that to do so, we need to bring in schema that FM can use to help us
structure our docs. Can anyone recommend some solid tools for creating
schema? It's either that or write the markup by hand, something I'd rather

sorting translated tables

2006-07-25 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Bill:

Unfortunately, this is a FrameMaker quirk and I think it has been in the
last 3 releases. All xref markers go "poof" when you sort the table.
Unfortunately, the "fix" is to NOT do any sorting after you start placing
xrefs.

Russ or Scott, do you have any plug-ins that fix this?

Hi everyone,

We ran into an interesting issue. When sorting a table, we are noticing that
the xrefs are broken after the sort. We're running into this a lot now that
our translations are coming back from the localizers (given the tables need
to be re-sorted based on the language rules).

Has anyone else noticed this broken xref issue when sorting tables
containing xrefs, and does anyone know a workaround other than manually
sorting the tables?

Thanks!

Workaround for marker character limit?

2006-07-10 Thread Sales@Bright Path
Hi Lynne:

Good suggestion, but with the number of markers with long entries, having
them do find/replaces each time they regenerate would be a pain. They are
using XML and Structured Frame to automate processes, and having this
process break down is a serious glitch to them.

With FrameMaker's UI limiting how the text is handled, even when it is
entered in the MIF, I don't think what FrameMaker offers is going to work.
I've put the client in touch with Scott Prentice and hopefully they will
connect and get a plug-in built that will overcome this limitation.

Thank you for the help! See you in a few weeks at the conference.

Take care,

Kay

1.919.244.8559

-Original Message-
From: Lynne A. Price

Frank, Scott,
Very interesting. I created a MIF file in which I inserted an Index
marker containing 900 characters and also a variable whose definition had
900 characters. I opened the MIF file and saved the result back to MIF.
Both 900-character strings were still there, so the entire length indeed is
stored in the document.
When I inserted the variable in the text, all 900 characters appear.
However, when I created an index, only the first 255 characters from the
marker text appear in the index entry. Thus, getting all the text into the
marker isn't sufficient to create the desired index.

Kay,
Do any of the very long index entries differ after the 255th character?
If not, you might want to use an abbreviation of the full text in the
markers, generate the index, and then do a global replace of the short
names with their longer equivalents.
