All, I think the combination of Simon's listed exclusions and IT making a
change to real-time protection was the solution that worked for us.

Thank you all.

If I recall correctly, the need to do the 2-step PDF generation process ended
some time around FM 8.
It's also significant that neither part of the process was a "save as". The
first step was to Print to a PDF file, then Distill the PS to PDF using the
Adobe Distiller tool.
It's also significant to note that the 2-step process did not produce an
interactive PDF file. In particular, cross-references and coded hyperlinks are
not active links because the link information was not passed through to the PS
when you were "printing" a document or book.

Way back when, on FM 6, we also had problems with "Save to PDF". Adobe
recommended saving as a PostScript file, then saving that as a PDF.

Our company also is still using FM12. All was well until everyone was
upgraded to Windows 10 and the company wasn't willing to pay the
subscription price for upgrading FM from a 32 bit app to 64 bit. Save to PDF
was broken. After attempting to save two large books to PDF and ended up one
"no file"
and one that worked, I discovered that if I created a little dummy book (a
3-4 page) FM book and always did a save as PDF on it before doing the same
with a real book, the save as PDF worked. That was several years ago. I only
have to run the dummy book once during an FM session. Not sure why it works,
but it does.

Hello,

I have experienced this many times with my customers where documents
fail to print, or are very slow to print.

The behaviour seems to be exacerbated by having embedded PDF in a
FrameMaker document, or graphics that contain transparency.

I discovered this years ago, and it's actually an interaction between
Microsoft anti-virus products and the Acrobat Distiller [Adobe PDF
printer] process that causes it to hang while attempting to print any
documents which contain embedded graphics with transparency areas.?
Documents that don't have transparent graphics often print without any
problem.

The antivirus products known to experience this behaviour are:
 Windows Defender
 Windows Intune Endpoint Protection
 Microsoft Security Essentials
 Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
 Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint
 Microsoft Endpoint Protection
 Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection

To allow FrameMaker and Acrobat Distiller to print, and if you make use
of Microsoft anti-virus products, it is recommended to configure the
antivirus product to exclude scanning the processes such as:
%ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2019\FrameMaker.exe
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 2015\Acrobat\acrodist.exe
? and also to exclude scanning the folders and files below:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe

Hello,

I have experienced this many times with my customers where documents
fail to print, or are very slow to print.

The behaviour seems to be exacerbated by having embedded PDF in a
FrameMaker document, or graphics that contain transparency.

I discovered this years ago, and it's actually an interaction between
Microsoft anti-virus products and the Acrobat Distiller [Adobe PDF
printer] process that causes it to hang while attempting to print any
documents which contain embedded graphics with transparency areas.
Documents that don't have transparent graphics often print without any
problem.

The antivirus products known to experience this behaviour are:
•    Windows Defender
•    Windows Intune Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Security Essentials
•    Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint
•    Microsoft Endpoint Protection
•    Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection

To allow FrameMaker and Acrobat Distiller to print, and if you make use
of Microsoft anti-virus products, it is recommended to configure the
antivirus product to exclude scanning the processes such as:

%ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2019\FrameMaker.exe
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Acrobat 2015\Acrobat\acrodist.exe
… and also to exclude scanning the folders and files below:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe

If your IT department don't permit you do add these exceptions, inform
them that their choice of antivirus product prevents you from producing
PDF using the Adobe PDF printer, and make it *their* problem!
I would also advise them that the Microsoft "Print to PDF" printer is
*not* an option as it does not provide all the features you require to
create your PDF.

I hope this helps resolve the problems you have experienced.

/// Simon BUCH

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF - Do not rely on System Fonts

2021-04-13 Thread Stephan Will

Hi Orly,

as long as you are changing this setting from within FrameMaker (and I
think this is what you are doing) the change is done only temporarily.

If you want to change the "Do not rely on system fonts" setting constantly
you have to go to (hope my translation is correct as I am working with a
german version): Start - Devices and Printers - right-click on Adobe PDF -
Print Settings (not Printer Settings) - Tab Adobe PDF Settings - change
settings as needed.

FM should not run at this time.

Now the problem with the flushed conversion process should not occur again
(as long as the printer driver will not be re-installed).

About the embedding of your font.
For testing it would be a good idea to save the print-job to a PS-file to
work with and distilling it manually.

1) Your distiller job options are set to embedd all fonts?
Got to your Distiller settings - Tab Fonts and see what is set to happen
when the embedding fails.

If set to "Warn and go on" have a look at the Log of the distiller.

2) The Kelson family fonts licence allows embedding?
Got to your Distiller settings - Tab Fonts and have a look on the fonts list.
Is the kelson font family shown in a one of the lists?

Message-ID:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

HI All,
Allison's recent question - about the old SetPrint reminded me of a problem I
currently have. I'm running FM2020 (from the Adobe Technical Suite) on a new HP
EliteBook 84 G6 (Intel core i5-8265U @1.6GHz) with 8GB of
installed RAM. No problems with processing times or open pod issues. FM works fine,
thank goodness.

My problem:
I use Kelson family fonts for my cover/back pages. These fonts, for some
reason, don't embed in the file.
When I quickly want to create a PDF, I'll use the "Save as PDF" File option.
Invariably, the PDF conversion process (via Distiller) gets flushed.
To solve the problem, I need to uncheck an option "Do not rely on system fonts"
which can be found only in the Adobe Print settings.
And I need to reset this each time I restart FM.
Any ideas on how to avoid this slightly annoying problem.

Many thanks! And have a great week,
Orly

Hi All -

Regarding the various "breakages" in Windows versions for a given FM
feature...

There is one solution that could be permanent or accessed "in case of
emergency": use an emulator. That is, run a virtual version of the desired
OS inside the OS version you're forced to use.

I've been using Oracle's "VirtualBox" emulator for several years now, and
there are other emulators out there as well. You can run just about anything
inside of anything. You can have a measure of communication between the two
environments. (I can copy and paste between environments, for example, and
also elect to access host system hardware, such as USB and ethernet ports.
You can also mount host file systems from within the virtual machine.)

In my case I have some very old (but vital) custom business applications
that only run in XP or older -- but it all lives on a
Win7 machine.

Recoding those old database apps to run in a newer OS, along with importing
all that old data, would be prohibitively expensive. Running the old apps in
an emulator costs next to nothing and no old code need be disturbed.

So, while I haven't checked, it's quite likely you could run a Win 7
emulation hosted by Win10 -- all while sidestepping the Win10 problems.

It's pretty slick. Install Virtualbox on the host machine; this brings up a
window that *is* a machine that will run the OS you really want to use.
Install the desired OS in the virtual machine and away you go.

Re: [Framers] Save As PDF doesn't work first time

Tom, make sure that your Win10 version is fully patched up - you may be
suffering from the build 1803 issue that messed up PDF creation. The patch
released July 24 seems to have fixed it.

Art,

I am checking the Generate PDF Data checkbox. As for FM17, there have been lots
of complaints about it on this forum about that version. Rick Quatro suggested
that I wait for FM19, which is supposed to resolve the problems of previous
versions and be a fully 64-bit app. Now that FM19 is out, I may wait a little
before upgrading to give Adobe time to work out initial issues that always seem
to occur with the birth of a new edition. That, and I will need to convince our
IT staff that spending a grand on a new revision is worth it. My colleague in
another division moved from FrameMaker to AuthorIT a few years ago. He loves
it, because he has lots of reusable chunks of text, which I don't have. And I
have many more manuals for which I am responsible than he does.

And, even more important to me, at least, is that FM is pretty universal and
this forum is an incredibly good place to get help from real experts.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get forced to move from FM to AIT.

You're checking the Generate PDF Data checkbox when you Print to the Acrobat
printer?

And you may want to point out to the IT staff that FM12 wasn't designed for
W10. Definitely consider an upgrade -- you're going to be three revs behind the
curve shortly. Antique software...

Don't entirely agree or disagree.

I was a beta '17 user, so I've been using it for several years on Win10
without any serious issues. Always thinking that whatever the current
version is, that's what many people are using so you see a high number of
questions and complaints about that.

Can't talk about '19.

Re: [Framers] Save As PDF doesn't work first time

2018-08-23 Thread Tom Beiswenger
Art,

I am checking the Generate PDF Data checkbox. As for FM17, there have been
lots of complaints about it on this forum about that version. Rick Quatro
suggested that I wait for FM19, which is supposed to resolve the problems
of previous versions and be a fully 64-bit app. Now that FM19 is out, I
may wait a little before upgrading to give Adobe time to work out initial
issues that always seem to occur with the birth of a new edition. That,
and I will need to convince our IT staff that spending a grand on a new
revision is worth it. My colleague in another division moved from
FrameMaker to AuthorIT a few years ago. He loves it, because he has lots
of reusable chunks of text, which I don't have. And I have many more
manuals for which I am responsible than he does.

And, even more important to me, at least, is that FM is pretty universal
and this forum is an incredibly good place to get help from real experts.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get forced to move from FM to AIT.

You could also try downloading the free eval of FM17 and see if that works
better, in either or both PDF generation modes.

Re: [Framers] Save As PDF doesn't work first time

2018-08-23 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, Art, et. al.

I am not on the latest version of FrameMaker anymore (stopped upgrading at FM
12), but this historical experience, as has been mentioned here before, has
been different for me each time a new version of FrameMaker was released.

I had to go try _both_ Save as PDF and printing to the Adobe PDF printer to see
which would work better for me. _Usually_ (and this is not definitive since I
forget what worked well in each version now), "Save as PDF" worked better for
me.

YMMV, of course!

Historically, SaveAs PDF has been problematic.
Printing to the Acrobat logical printer has been more stable and predictable.

That, unfortunately, does not work. Although all of the hyperlinks work using
that method, the videos embedded in the PDF (which are inserted by reference in
the original FM 12 doc) will not play. Save as PDF is the only method that I've
found that gives the PDF all of the functionality that I've built into the
book. The behavior I referenced originally just started when our IT grout
upgraded me to a new Dell notebook running Win 10.

On the Frame menu, click File > Print Setup and choose Adobe PDF from the
list of installed printers, or you can select it as the printer when using
File > Print.

Save as PDF has been pretty much fixed in the last couple of Frame
versions, but IIRC (memory fuzzy), 12 was the last version where it still
had some issues.

What is the Acrobat logical printer? Our documents often have video tutorials
in them. The only way that I've been able to make them work is to us the Save

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF

2017-08-28 Thread Dennis Brunnenmeyer
I try to avoid using PDF extensions in any browser. I'd much rather open
PDFs with the *real* application where you have direct and full access to
all of the capabilities of the program.

I first delete the PDF extensions from my browser(s) of choice and then go
to Default Programs in the Windows Control Panel to set the PDF file
extension to whatever Adobe PDF application I happen to prefer—Adobe
Acrobat for example. On this machine, that happens to be Acobe Acrobat 8.0
Standard—not the machine I use with FrameMaker, but the idea is the same.

Anyway, that's my three cents worth—formerly two cents in value but
readjusted for inflation.

If you have Acrobat on the system, don't install Reader, and set
Chrome to use Acrobat to open PDFs.

That has nothing to do with Save as PDF.

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF

   -reader-plug-ins-in-modern-web-.html

Actually, I fear it does have to do with FrameMaker's "Save as PDF"
functionality. We have repeatedly been warned by the experts who know
about these things, that it would be foolish to attempt to put Adobe
Acrobat Pro DC and Adobe Reader on the same machine -- due to sloppy
programming by these two product teams, they will access and overwrite
each other's parameter files. Therefore I need to pose the question, is
that warning still correct, or by now has it become old scoop?

The problem is that although the Chrome browser may pick up and use the
Adobe Reader as an extension to read Adobe PDF files, it definitely
does not pick up and use Acrobat Pro DC. Since we are warned not to put
Adobe Reader on a machine having the Acrobat Pro DC software, this
makes it difficult to access Acrobat PDF documents using Chrome. We
would need to have one machine dedicated to generating the PDFs and
another machine dedicated to accessing them, no?

This has nothing to do with FrameMaker in general or Save as PDF in particular.

Reconfigure Chrome to use Adobe Reader.

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF

2017-08-19 Thread John Sgammato
We had a different problem with Save as PDF. We use alternate-row shading
in tables. In some table cells, seemingly randomly, the text goes behind
the shading, becoming invisible. We have no solution so we Print to PDF
like in the old days.

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF

2017-07-26 Thread Robert Lauriston
I've heard that Save as PDF was unreliable since I think 5.5, but it
always worked fine for me. There was a time when all the files in a
book had to be open.

Co-workers who had problems had something other than Adobe PDF or a
non-clone PostScript printer set as the default printer, or their PDF
job options were wrong. I helped people with those issues so many
times I created web pages for them.

What John said, but seriously guys, this has been unreliable since it was
introduced in the first Adobe releases of what, FM 5? 6?

The Acrobat people obviously don't test with Frame, and the Frame people
apparently don't know about or test with new Acrobat builds...

Treating Acrobat as a logical printer and printing to it as you would a
physical printer removes a lot of the problematic middleware code that
breaks. It's only a few more keystrokes or clicks... just remove "Save As
PDF" from your world and go on with life.

I gave up on Save As PDF months ago when it was unreliable for tables. In
tables with alternate rows shaded, sometimes the text in the shaded rows is
obscured behind the shading. So we now mandate Print Book to PDF and all is
well.

My fantasy is that there has been a storm of protests from PDF users
and Adobe is in panic mode, struggling to fix the problem they've just
created. Does that sound like Adobe, or like a dream?

   > Which file format do you use for your images? Are all image formats
   blurry now?

   Yes, they are uniformly blurred.

   > Do you get this effect with all files with such images?

Yes, suddenly all my new files are blurred like this.

   > Do you use RGB or CMYK? What happens, if you select the other colour

I've always used RGB, so the first thing I tried was to use CMYK. That
   didn't help at all.

   > Do you know, if also other users with this Acrobat update get PDFs
   with blurry images?

   No, I don't know. I wish I did know.

   > When was this upgrade installed?

   Last Thursday night.

no way for me to get past their "qualifications" people in India, to
inform the Adobe technical team about this new glitch.

Re: [Framers] Save as PDF

2017-07-24 Thread lklane64
I've been having issues with blurry images off and on for several months
without much success.
Have you tried requesting technical help from Adobe on Twitter?

[Framers] Save as PDF
Here's a warning for users of "Save as PDF" -- Adobe has just
"upgraded" Acrobat Pro DC to 2017.009.20058 and this has rendered the
images it generates unusably blurry. I am dead in the water, unable to
render my FM files into PDFs and thus update my online PDFs at
http://[1]www.kouroo.info. Check this out and, if your new generated
images have likewise been rendered unusably blurry, please protest. I
have myself attempted to protest to Adobe, but since my subscription to
Acrobat is an institutional subscription by way of a university, I do
not have a personal registration number to offer and therefore there is
no way for me to get past their "qualifications" people in India, to
inform the Adobe technical team about this new glitch.

2017-07-24 Thread David Spreadbury
Not having used the DC version, have you tried creating a postscript file and
then distilling that, if the DC version even supports creating a postscript
file?
