PDF and Alternatives to Acrobat [WAS Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?]

This is true, but by Apple's own admission the Quartz PDF renderer (or whatever
they call it) doesn't product publication-quality PDF. If you need PDFX or
whatnot, it's not the way to go, but it's fine for screen reading. Implemented
as a 'print to PDF' feature in the print dialog of all apps.

Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition to
your list:

"easyPDF" from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get "without a sponsor
page" ... all their tools cost this, hence the "995"
in the name. :) Their "PdfEdit995" and "PdfSignature995" products adds the
capability to add combine/extract pages, encryption, etc.

The key question to ask about these is do they support pdfMark PostScript
commands. This is the technology that FrameMaker uses to get bookmarks,
links, etc. in their PDFs. If you can't get these from the other tools, it
would be a serious limitation in my opinion.

2013-04-04 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Thanks for the list! It will help me during my evaluations soon. An addition to
your list:

"easyPDF" from BCL Technologies ($29.95)
http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf/pdf-printer/

And I think, but not sure, that Pdf995 costs ($9.95) to get "without a sponsor
page" ... all their tools cost this, hence the "995" in the name. :) Their
"PdfEdit995" and "PdfSignature995" products adds the capability to add
combine/extract pages, encryption, etc.

PDF and Alternatives to Acrobat [WAS Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?]

2013-04-04 Thread Rick Quatro
The key question to ask about these is do they support pdfMark PostScript
commands. This is the technology that FrameMaker uses to get bookmarks,
links, etc. in their PDFs. If you can't get these from the other tools, it
would be a serious limitation in my opinion.

Okay. I have not looked at the details in easyPDF yet, but as a fast PDF
generator, I was quite pleased.

But, I also do not do much editing of the PDF output. I use that file as the
way to distribute review copies pretty regularly when working on a document,
and having to edit it each time to fix things would be time-consuming. For the
final release, about all I do to the PDF is add certain meta-data properties.

Don't know for sure yet - only did an initial look to see if it had any basic
fundamental problems. I will do more comprehensive testing later ... with other
PDF creation products too.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

One reason I ditched easyPDF creator and a couple of others is that the
bookmarks I happen to like/use all the time weren't part of the deal. I did
check in with support on a couple of the tools and they said "no, you can
add them later." Not what I wanted to hear!

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-03 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Thanks for the info!

Sounds like it will be important to do a thorough test to make sure that all
the capabilities I need are there ... in whatever tool I end up going with. I
won't do this test/study for a few more weeks to month probably though.

For now, just the ultra-fast output file generation makes it easy for me to
justify using it for the review copies I send out to people here (prior to
final release).

One reason I ditched easyPDF creator and a couple of others is that the
bookmarks I happen to like/use all the time weren't part of the deal. I did
check in with support on a couple of the tools and they said "no, you can add
them later." Not what I wanted to hear!

2013-04-03 Thread Robert Lauriston
I virtually never edit the PDFs I generate myself, but I sometimes use
Acrobat to extract and combine pages from various PDFs, consolidate
comments from multiple copies of a PDF, and OCR scanned documents.

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-02 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Your point is well-taken. Perhaps, I should instead say that I will stop at
version 11 and not upgrade to any future version of FrameMaker. The upgrade
price was already getting too high for what I need/use from this tool - the
previous upgrades at $199 per year were easier to justify, and I held off
making a decision for 2 years based on the low cost of the Update Plan.

My reasoning (perhaps faulty by your approach, but it is what it is for me)
being that when I use a tool all the time for my work, I stay up on the latest
versions. Perhaps, the false comfort that some bug or the other is fixed in
later versions is the rationale.

BTW, with regard to other Adobe tools, I can usually find much lower cost
alternatives that do what I need (this is just my personal viewpoint, and does
not apply to other folks, of course ... if anyone prefers Adobe tools, fine!)
For example, I use Xara Photo and Graphic Designer over Adobe Photoshop, and
Magix Movie Edit Pro over Adobe Premiere.

But, for many years, FrameMaker was simply unique in its document creation
capabilities - hence I used it for all my documentation work. And even for
simple short writing work (memos, reports, etc.) that I do all the time. But,
as of last week, for these simple, few-page, uncomplicated documents that
don't have complex editing or formatting needs, I have switched to Word and it
going fine.

BTW, Adobe Acrobat Pro is also something I may drop soon. I have been using it
for _many_ years, but it is time to find alternatives since its upgrade pricing
is high - much more than other similar products _list_ price. And the Update
Plan for it is no longer available to me either, from what I can tell.

For example, with a very quick search, one of the best I have seen so far is
BCL Technologies easyPDF printer. At $29.95, it does what I need, and
[limited] tests using a trial version show it producing perfectly good PDF
output files. It also generates _many_ times faster than Acrobat Pro. Last
night, I printed a 30+ page FrameMaker document as a test, and the output file
was written in under 1 second and was about 30% smaller than the one from
Acrobat Pro. The same FrameMaker book took almost a minute to generate a PDF
output file using Acrobat Pro.

Why do you feel a need to stop using FrameMaker just because you don't want to
send Adobe any more money?

I own a number of old Adobe apps that still work fine. I use Photoshop
5 and Acrobat 8 all the time. I still have FrameMaker 6 and Illustrator 7,

It is, indeed, one of the products I intend to check more thoroughly soon - I

Of course, this is a bit more than just a PDF creation tool, and the price is

Thanks,

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Kapil.

Okay, I just got off the phone with somebody in the FrameMaker team. Her
statement to me was that the Update Plan for FrameMaker is indeed either dead,
or essentially not available anymore to anybody who has less than 10,000 points
in the Adobe systems.

The bottom line: all users with few licenses are essentially shut out.

So, it seems that I did *not* get wrong information from the Adobe sales rep I
spoke to before!

For me, this means that FrameMaker 11 is the _last_ version I will ever use
(after having been on the FrameMaker wagon since 1988).

Because the version upgrade pricing has gotten way out of hand - from my
perspective, _most_ (almost all) of what I paid for with the FM 10 and FM 11
upgrades were bug-fixes for version 9 really!

At $399 for the last upgrade, this is simply not acceptable anymore. Even my
purchase of the 2 year update plan was for naught (based on my sign-up date for
the Update plan, I had to pay for the FM 11 version upgrade _separately_
anyway), since I have not seen FrameMaker 12 come out in that time.

I have already begun looking for alternatives and will make do without
FrameMaker as soon as we can finish this project - I suspect that my last
purchase of any FrameMaker-related product will be for Mif2Go to get all
current FrameMaker documents into some other tool.

Z

Yes, I would like to get information - the last time, I bought a 2 year Update

Please do let me know who I can speak to about this (as an FYI, I did get an

Hi Syed,

This is Kapil Verma, Adobe Tech Comm Product Manager. Unfortunately, you have
been given wrong information. We continue to offer upgrade plans for both
FrameMaker and Acrobat. If you are interested in purchasing/renewing, I will be

Does anyone know what is going on here? If Adobe is going to charge an arm and

The cost of FrameMaker has simply become too expensive to work for my needs ...

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Martinek, Carla
Syed -

I've been using Frame since 1991 (Frame 2.0.)

We've been evaluating MadCap Flare and were ready to switch, but when we looked
at FM11 and the new multi-HTML output that appears to be as easy as Flare, it
made us stop and take another look. We don't know which way we're going yet..
back into evaluation mode.

That said, MadCap being a smaller company is, in general, much more responsive
in regards to feature requests. Much like Frame Technologies (and DataLogics)
were in the early days with Frame. Their Platinum support plan is worth its
cost when you are first using it, and Flare imports Framemaker files directly.
However, my recent talk with an Adobe sales mgr letting them know we were
*seriously* evaluating a competitor seems to have gotten me better response
regarding some of the issues I've been having - more so than I've seen in
years.

Cost-wise, it may be worth it to you to look at the Adobe cloud-based
subscription model. That is supposed to include the latest versions whenever
released, but I haven't evaluated the overall cost on a yearly basis yet.

Thanks for the response, Kapil.

Yes, I would like to get information - the last time, I bought a 2 year Update
Plan directly at the Adobe web site (may have been the Adobe store?) in May of
2011, but cannot find that link on the site anymore.

Please do let me know who I can speak to about this (as an FYI, I did get an
e-mail from somebody else on the FrameMaker team, but we did not connect on

What new multi-HTML output? The only thing I find in the what's new in FM

costs $15,000.

Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd
love to find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously
evaluating the cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs
the cost of switching to a different program. We use unstructured Frame,
so most of the features added in recent versions of the program have
been of no use to us, thus we're paying top dollar for minimal
improvement. But $499 seems even higher than Frame's one-version
upgrades? Or is this only a better deal financially if replacing Frame +
RoboHelp?

Hi, Kapil.

Okay, I just got off the phone with somebody in the FrameMaker team. Her
statement to me was that the Update Plan for FrameMaker is indeed either dead, or
essentially not available anymore to anybody who has less than 10,000 points in the Adobe
systems.

I believe the Publish command comes with TCS, but when I played with
it the workflow seemed wrong.

The simple workflow where you just create a RoboHelp project and link
to (rather than import) FrameMaker source is not documented very well,
if at all. I created a cheat sheet for my own future reference:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

The instructions are in the FrameMaker project in the /fm directory,
and also in the PDF generated from that project, also in that
directory.

Why pay anything to upgrade FrameMaker? Adobe hasn't added any

What requirements do you have that FM9's not meeting?

Re: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Tori Muir
We had a client that wanted line numbers in a document, a new feature in
v11. We would not have upgraded otherwise. It was literally a 'if Frame
can't number the lines, we put this back into Word' situation -- for a
400 page specification document. I cannot imagine the pain of trying to
wrangle something that large and complex in Word!

Sadly, having spent the flippin' $600 to upgrade, they were not happy
with how Frame does the line numbers (they wanted contiguous numbers
thru the entire 400-page book, whereas Frame restarts in every chapter
and at every 1000th line). So we ended up having to throw the problem
over to Rick Quatro, who came up with an excellent scripted solution at
a fraction of the upgrade cost. Which is quite possibly why I'm so
peevish about the upgrade price:we spent $600/employee for nothing we
could use.

RE: Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Tori,

Your observation of top dollar for minimal improvement sounds right to me,
unfortunately! I also only use Unstructured FrameMaker at this time, btw.

Here is what I have spent on upgrading FrameMaker in the recent past few years
(I did _not_ bother to include the upgrades _prior_ to version 8.0):

$289 for FrameMaker version 8.
$304 for FrameMaker version 9.
$393 for FrameMaker version 10.
$436 for 2 year update plan (included the 2 year update cost for Acrobat Pro
too ... at around $126, as I recall).

Would I say that it has been worth it? Not recently ... particularly since I
think that versions 10 and 11 should have been released as bug fixes for
version 9, as far as I am concerned, and should _not_ have been charged for.

With my luck, FrameMaker 12 will be released _after_ my current plan expires. :(

You may ask why I was wanting to sign up for the Update Plan again? Well, I was
hoping it would be at a lower cost (and make it palatable) than the [expected]
$399 for a version 12 upgrade.

But, at these prices, I can no longer justify using FrameMaker for my
documentation needs. The removal of this Update Plan mostly just crystallized
my decision, I guess. Now, I will probably just spend some money for a purchase
of Mif2Go to transfer my documents out of FrameMaker.

So, yes! Adobe has just lost a long-time FrameMaker customer. Time to move on,
I guess ... after 25 years. :)

(And, FWIW, if I cannot find an update plan for Acrobat Pro on their web site,
then that will also be dropped when that Update Plan expires ... there are
plenty of way good-enough PDF generation solutions out there now, available
for far less cost than Acrobat Pro.)

Does anyone know what is going on here? If Adobe is going to charge an arm and

The cost of FrameMaker has simply become too expensive to work for my needs ...

the Update plan, I had to pay for the FM 11 version upgrade _separately_
anyway), since I have not seen FrameMaker 12 come out in that time.

I have already begun looking for alternatives and will make do without
FrameMaker as soon as we can finish this project - I suspect that my last
purchase of any FrameMaker-related product will be for Mif2Go to get all
current FrameMaker documents into some other tool.

Shocked me at how simple it was to publish from unstructured Frame. Yes, it
starts using their default templates. You'll definitely spend a significant
amount of time setting up style sheets, etc. (But probably less than you would
setting up EDDs, etc. for structured Frame the old way.)

What "new multi-HTML output"? The only thing I find in the "what's new in FM
11" doc that fits that description is for FrameMaker Publishing Server, which
costs $15,000.

Question: MacCap's site lists upgrades as 'starting at $499' -- we'd
love to find a more cost-effective alternative to FrameMaker. The v9 >
v11 $600 upgrade was a real kick in the pants to start seriously
evaluating the cost of continuing to absorb FM's high upgrade fees vs
the cost of switching to a different program. We use unstructured Frame,
so most of the features added in recent versions of the program have
been of no use to us, thus we're paying top dollar for minimal
improvement. But $499 seems even higher than Frame's one-version
upgrades? Or is this only a better deal financially if replacing Frame +
RoboHelp?

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
I believe the Publish command comes with TCS, but when I played with
it the workflow seemed wrong.

The simple workflow where you just create a RoboHelp project and link
to (rather than import) FrameMaker source is not documented very well,
if at all. I created a cheat sheet for my own future reference:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

The instructions are in the FrameMaker project in the /fm directory,
and also in the PDF generated from that project, also in that
directory.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
Why pay anything to upgrade FrameMaker? Adobe hasn't added any
features that I'd pay for since FM8 added Unicode support. I never do
anything new with it so I never need support.

What requirements do you have that FM9's not meeting?

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

Which is quite possibly why I'm so
peevish about the upgrade price:we spent $600/employee for nothing we
could use.

Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-01 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, Tori,

Your observation of "top dollar for minimal improvement" sounds right to me,
unfortunately!

(And, FWIW, if I cannot find an update plan for Acrobat Pro on their web site,
then that will also be dropped when that Update Plan expires ... there are
plenty of "way good-enough" PDF generation solutions out there now, available
for far less cost than Acrobat Pro.)

Why do you feel a need to stop using FrameMaker just because you don't
want to send Adobe any more money?

I own a number of old Adobe apps that still work fine. I use Photoshop

Ok-a-a-y ... I am confused now. I just spoke with an Adobe sales rep who claims
that they are no longer offering the Upgrade Plan for Acrobat and FrameMaker
... huhn!?!?

Even though, Adobe sent me an e-mail in late January reminding me that my
current one was going to expire soon (in May fortunately) and I needed to renew?

Does anyone know what is going on here? If Adobe is going to charge an arm and
a leg to upgrade to the next version of FrameMaker (like I had to do for
version 9 and 10 and 11), then that will be the last nail in the coffin, and I
will use version 11 till it croaks or find another solution.

The cost of FrameMaker has simply become too expensive to work for my needs ...

You can still buy an upgrade to FrameMaker 11 on adobe.com. Maybe they'll
discontinue that in favor of TCS for the next release?

I'm not sure I've had any reason to call support about FM10, so the lack of
 support isn't an issue.

Hi, Robert.

I already have FrameMaker version 11. Actually, I was not looking for support
per se ... I was just anticipating being ready with the Update Plan (at a lower
cost than a single version update) in place to get version 12 when it comes out.

TCS is gross overkill for what I use FrameMaker for, so not likely to get
approval for it - and I am not about to pay for that myself!

Anyway, as of yesterday, I am now exploring making all my work be hyperlinked
Wiki documents instead - they are mostly large User Manuals, API documentation
and stuff, so switching away from PDF from FrameMaker documents to a Wiki may
work ... any recommendations along these lines? My current docs have some
graphics, lots of text, with plenty of hyperlinks (generally internal
cross-references). Essentially B/W, with some color use in headings, etc.

If I find something workable for creating Wiki versions of my documents
relatively cleanly, and if Adobe cannot get their version upgrade pricing
rational and correct (the cost of upgrading to 9, 10 and 11 was unacceptably
high ... for a point tool), then version 11 is where I will permanently stop
and never upgrade again.

And that will be a too bad moment. Having used FM since version 3 on a Sun
3/50 ... it may just be time to move on. :(

I had to phone them.

2013-03-21 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Um, no. Not the license expired message ? this request has to do with
maintenance renewal for updates.

Thanks anyway,

Z

:(

Eek!

My plan is for the TCS, so I don't know what they've done with the individual
plans.

I do know that they stopped selling new maintenance for FM as a point product.

2013-03-21 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
The confusing part is that they sent me an e-mail in January - just 6 to 8
weeks ago - saying that it was getting close to the time to renew!!! I have
individual plans for FrameMaker and Acrobat - both expiring in May. :(
