Fw: ttys file question

2013-09-11 Thread Jack Mc Lauren
I have added the following entry to /etc/gettytab file

test.std.115200:\
:ep:sp#4800:tc:Pc

And also I have changed /etc/ttys file

cuau3   "/usr/libexec/getty test.std.115200"    cons25  on secure

I expect /dev/cuau3 device to use even parity and 4800 as speed, but when I
check the device properties using stty -f /dev/cuau3, only speed changes to
4800 and parity value does not change.

Here's the output of stty -f /dev/cuau3 after applying the changes using kill
-HUP 1 command.

speed 4800 baud;
lflags: -icanon -isig -iexten -echo
iflags: -icrnl -ixon -ixany -imaxbel -brkint
oflags: -opost tab3
cflags: cs8 -parenb

Fw: ttys file question

2013-09-08 Thread Jack Mc Lauren
Hi list

I'm trying to connect to my server via a serial port which is named ttyu6 under
FreeBSD. In order to do that, I've decided to change /etc/ttys file like this:

#Serial terminlas
#The 'dialup' keyword identifies dialin lines to login, fingerd etc.
ttyu6  "/usr/libexec/getty  std.115200" cons25 on secure

But I can not connect to my server with this configuration. But if I change
ttyu6 to cuau6, everything works fine! I don't understand the difference, would
you please explain the reason for me?

Thanks in advance

The commands that fail are:

flex -i -o src/cfgparse.yy.c ../i3-4.3/src/cfgparse.l
flex -i -o i3-config-wizard/cfgparse.yy.c i3-config-wizard/cfgparse.l

The below commands work:

flex -i -osrc/cfgparse.yy.c ../i3-4.3/src/cfgparse.l
flex -i -oi3-config-wizard/cfgparse.yy.c i3-config-wizard/cfgparse.l

So making the port to build is very simple.
You can try my patch: http://oslo.ath.cx/i3-wm_4_3.diff

I've cc'ed the port maintainer.

Your attachments aren't making it through to the list -- the vast
majority of non-text attachments are stripped by mailman.

Best thing to do is stick your debug output on a site like pastebin and
post a link.

Hi,
Following interoperability is failing:-

FW: Makeopts DEBUG=-g kernel option

2012-01-24 Thread Dirk Kotze

Hi there

I'm experiencing the following problem: All is well when I boot the standard
FreeBSD 8.2 GENERIC kernel.  The moment however when I comment out the line the
line below, the kernel hangs upon boot after detecting the em0 device (the
motherboard has 2 Intel 8257x dual Gigabit Ethernet cards).
makeopts   DEBUG=-g

I'm using FreeBSD 8.2 on a WADE-8020 motherboard with an Intel QM57 chipset and
Intel Core i5 CPU.

The reason I'm trying to remove debugging options from the kernel is that I am
trying to make the kernel footprint smaller.

This leaves me with a few questions:
1) What are the risks/drawbacks/advantages of leaving debugging symbols in the
kernel?
2) Why would debug symbols (of all things!) make the difference between a
working and non-working kernel?
3) Does this point in the direction of some other (more serious problem
perhaps?) with the hardware and/or other kernel drivers?

Thanks so much for any assistance.

Dirk Kotze

Hi all,

No, the Grinch didn't steal the FreeBSD security officer GPG key, and your eyes
aren't deceiving you: We really did just send out 5 security advisories.

The timing, to put it bluntly, sucks. We normally aim to release advisories on
Wednesdays in order to maximize the number of system administrators who will be
at work already; and we try very hard to avoid issuing advisories any time close
to holidays for the same reason. The start of the Christmas weekend -- in some
parts of the world it's already Saturday -- is absolutely not when we want to be
releasing security advisories.

Unfortunately my hand was forced: One of the issues (FreeBSD-SA-11:08.telnetd)
is a remote root vulnerability which is being actively exploited in the wild;
bugs really don't come any worse than this. On the positive side, most people
have moved past telnet and on to SSH by now; but this is still not an issue we
could postpone until a more convenient time.

While I'm writing, a note to freebsd-update users: FreeBSD-SA-11:07.chroot has a
rather messy fix involving adding a new interface to libc; this has the awkward
side effect of causing the sizes of some "symbols" (aka. functions) in libc to
change, resulting in cascading changes into many binaries. The long list of
updated files is irritating, but isn't a sign that anything in freebsd-update

No need to install cvsup or cvsup-without-gui. The
csup utility is part of the base system and has the
same functionality. It can be used to do "make update"
for the ports collection and the src/ subtree.

As far as I know, you can still use it, but sysinstall
won't support it. The dedicated mode is still useful
when you need to keep fdisk-partitioned disks (e. g.
for compatibility issues), but don't have need for a
separate slice as FreeBSD doesn't essentially need
it, and if you don't want to access FreeBSD's partitions
from a different OS that can't handle the dedicated
layout - it should be fine.

For maximum compatibility, it's still often suggested
to use the fdisk + bsdlabel + newfs approach, if you
need it "old-fashioned". :-)

Of course, GPT is the current modern way to go.

It _should_.

Try with

sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=16

set, it should make sure the writes are "direct", and
there's nothing "preserving" data of previous installations.
Partitioners other than fdisk may store data in other
regions of the hard disk, e. g. some meta-data at the
"end", or "bottom" of the disk? :-)

A powerful contra-magnet should fix it. :-)

Those codes may also be generated by the BIOS. For
example, my system outputs two-digit codes in the
lower right corner of the screen during boot to
signal some states I don't know in detail. Such a
state could be "cannot boot, didn't find anything"
when transfering control from BIOS to 1st stage of
booting (traditionally MBR) fails. Some systems
show an "please insert diskette and press Enter"
message, others keep rebooting, and some just show
a mysterious number.

Even if the basic dialogs you're visiting are nearly
the same since 4.0 (the time when I started using
FreeBSD regularly).

Today, I mostly do installs per command line, and
often scripted, so sysinstall isn't an "everyday tool"
to me. Still I can remember how to blaze through its
screens to get a basic system installed. Maybe that's
causing the typical sysinstall-related lazyness. :-)

> I ran dd and zeroed out the entire first gigabyte of space on the
> drive, yet grub was still there! I couldn't believe it.

Then it seems that there is either a error during write
(e. g. a protection mechanism that reports "write done,
all successful", but in fact does not perform the
actual write operation to the MBR), or parts of GRUB
are located in "later" parts of the disk. Or, if both
does not apply, it's a BIOS supplied status code.

Yes, I've been away from FreeBSD for quite a while now, not just
because of the hardware recognition problems I was having when I first
bought this machine, but also due to a whole slew of other
complications that arose in my personal life, some of which resulted in
my being physically separated from my computer for a very long time
(it's a long story). :-)

Interesting to see the changes that have taken place in the meantime.
I've certainly got some catching up to do here. :-)

I much prefer to use ports, myself. I just like to install cvsup from
packages on a new install, to get the ball rolling, as they say. I was
very surprised to see so few packages available in sysinstall, I must
say!

That's a pity. I always liked using "DD" mode. Why use a boot manager
or even a plain-vanilla MBR if you don't really need one, right?

I ran the install CD a bunch of times, and have tried both installing
FreeBSD's boot manager as well as installing an ordinary master boot
record. I thought that would be all it would take to override grub,
but not so!

I've tried just about everything I can think of, and still that nasty,
grubby (pun intended) little sucker is still there when I reboot. It's
downright infuriating!

Yes, I've been shelling out and shelling out from sysinstall, but still
not getting the results I want. It's almost as if my hard drive has
turned into a "grub magnet" and it just won't come off! :-)

Exactly. I haven't looked up the error codes (either 15 or 17,
depending on what I was trying just before the reboot), but that's as
far as it gets, outputting the code and then just sitting there. I
suspect the codes are related to grub not finding the menu.lst file it
expects to find buried down in a subdirectory of /etc (God, I hate
Linux!). :-)

Same here. In the past, I've often fallen back to using sysinstall for
those sorts of admin chores. Much easier than dealing with a bunch of
arcane command-line options and such.

Have you tried to set zfs_enable=YES in rc.conf? Based on rcorder(8)
output rc.d/zfs should come just after rc.d/mountcritlocal.

Fw: zpool-zfs'es on a GELI-encrypted volume are not mounted at boot [patch included]

2011-07-10 Thread Christopher J. Ruwe
Nearly a week ago I posted this question to freebsd-fs, but probalby my
question is a) worded too complicatedly, b) not really a
filesystem-issue or c) both.

To rephrase: In setups requiring one or more ZFS-dataset to be mounted before
another service is activated (GELI in my case) and the rest of the ZFS-datasets
after that service is activated (because they require GELI), it seems to be
necessary to add a `zfs mount -a` to mountcritlocal. Is this considered correct
behaviour and wouldn't it make sense to add such a line to mountcritlocal in
the standard setup?

Thank you, cheers,

Subject: zpool-zfs'es on a GELI-encrypted volume are not mounted at
boot [patch included]

I run my notebook under FreeBSD 8.2-stable, r223699. I have setup my
disks with ZFS so that I boot from a very small rpool and mount
datasets, among these /usr from another pool configured on top of an
AES encrypted GELI.

When installing a new world using this setup, it is necessary to
manually adapt /etc/rc.d/mountcritlocal, mountcritlocal_start() to do a
zfs mount -a. Failing to do so causes my rootpool to be mounted (which
follows from rc.conf), then the GELI volume to be unlocked. After this,
the boot routine hangs, as /usr (which resides) on the encrypted vol,
which is not mounted, as the canonical zfs mounts are mounted before
GELI.

I cannot imagine that I am the only one to run ZFSes on an encrypted
GELI volume. Am I booting this setup in an inadvisable way, so that I
need to run into problems? If not, then it might be an idea to
include a zfs mount -a in mountcritlocal in the canonical rc.d-setup.

Am I getting this right or could you please comment?

Thank you, cheers,

One more comment there - you also need the ca.crt file.

You only need to copy the .crt and .key files, those are your key and
certificate for the client named client1.

They are used for authentication.

The .ovpn file (.conf on Unix) contains the information OpenVPN needs
to find your OpenVPN server. A good sample can be found at
http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/howto.html#examples.

For example, I give the following config to my clients:

client
dev tun
proto udp
remote put_your_server_ip_here 1194
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
route-method exe
route-delay 2
ca ca.crt
cert client1.crt
key client1.key
# only uncomment if you setup tls-auth
# tls-auth tls-auth.key 1
verb 3
comp-lzo

Yours won't match exactly but it'll probably be awfully close.

This is a very frustrating process but I think I'm getting there. The files I
created on the FreeBSD server which I copied over are:

   client1.crt
   client1.csr
   client1.key

But the windows setup appears that it wants one of these files to be called
client.ovpn. Of course I can't give all of them that name so I'm stumped again.

There isn't different software for server and client; OpenVPN performs either
role depending on how it is configured.
Given that the Windows installer is very close to the size of a 1.4 MB floppy,
you're likely consuming about twenty cents worth of disk space, or about a
dollar's worth of SSD space.

Problem with bwn and firmware (bwn0: the fw file(bwn_v4_lp_ucode15) not found)

2010-11-15 Thread Dmitry Krivenok
Hello!

I have the following wi-fi card on my Dell Latitude E6400:

siba_b...@pci0:12:0:0: class=0x028000 card=0x000c1028 chip=0x431514e4
rev=0x01 hdr=0x00
   vendor = 'Broadcom Corporation'
   device = 'Broadcom Wireless b/g (BCM4315/BCM22062000)'
   class  = network

Grepping for 0x4315 I found that my card is supported by bwn driver:

r...@olimpico-freebsd 22:08:00 ~ # [0] grep -r 4315 /usr/src/sys/dev/

I have recompiled my kernel (slightly modified 8.1 kernel) with the
following options set:
  device siba_bwn

  device firmware

Then I installed bwn-firmware-kmod port and now I have the following

These modules were created during bwn-firmware-kmod build using
firmware extracted
from broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2 by means of b43-fwcutter tool.

I also noticed that bwn0 interface was created:

My problem, however, is that when I run

r...@olimpico-freebsd 21:59:45 ~ # [0] ifconfig wlan create wlandev
bwn0 ssid olimpico wepmode on wepkey 0120119850 weptxkey 1 up

r...@olimpico-freebsd 21:59:54 ~ # [0]

I see the following in dmesg output:

wlan0: Ethernet address: 90:4c:e5:21:44:ec
bwn_v4_lp_ucode15: firmware image loaded, but did not register
bwn0: the fw file(bwn_v4_lp_ucode15) not found
bwn-open_v4_lp_ucode15: could not load firmware image, error 2
bwn0: the fw file(bwn-open_v4_lp_ucode15) not found

Am I missing something important?

Thanks!

gmake. On serious side there is no way to find version and
freebsd make havent changed much in years

I belive that make is still compatible with other BSDs.

FW: How to check version of Make in FreeBSD

2010-10-01 Thread Chetan Shukla

Hi All,

I am working on some code porting activity that wants
Some code to be ported on FreeBSD.
I need to check the version of Make installed in FreeBSD.
make -v does not help here.
What is the similar command in FreeBSD ?

Thanks & Regards,
Chetan

Hi all,
I have  built and installed a custom kernel on a freebsd 8.0-RELEASE machine
(host os),then i installed qemu from the packages and used the following
commands:-
# qemu-img create -f qcow2 freebsd.image 10G
# qemu -m 256 -hda freebsd.image -cdrom /dev/acd0 -boot d
# qemu freebsd.image
So, the  guest os is the same as the host os and i installed it from the same
DVD (freebsd 8.0-RELEASE).
I face two problems with the guest os (the host os is working fine):-
Problem#1
When i try to install any packages from the DVD by running
# sysinstall
   =>configure=>packages=>Install from freebsd CD/DVD
i got : Error
 mounting /dev/acd0 on /dist: Input/output error (5).
Problem#2
I put these lines in /etc/rc.conf:
hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
ifconfig_ed0="DHCP"
but i can not connect to the internet (the above configuration in the host os
works fine). When i use the GENERIC kernel i get no problems. Here are the
differences between the two kernels, the GENERIC and MYKERNEL.

You betcha, though all good information.

1. Nope, the CNAME is not controlled by me.
2. Nope, the CNAMEd sites are on another provider.
3. Yes, it is possible by our support system.
4. Nope, no bind here.

I have been reading the info everyone posted, and I configured a domain
as I was asked. Since the reconfigured domain did no harm to my servers,
I am inclined to let them do it. If it is the right thing to do, or the
proper thing to do, seems to matter little those in the big offices. If
they can find nowhere on the internet where it says "THOU SHALL NOT DO
", they believe is industry standard.

So WTH, I'll do it, so long as it doesn't cause my pager to go beep in
the night.

I am too tired of arguing to keep it up anymore.

Thanks,

As a comment on reverse DNS lookups, although the example Sean gave
should have a single PTR entry as the result of a reverse lookup, in
general reverse DNS lookups can return *multiple* values. If multiple A
records pointing at the same numeric address exist, the reverse lookup
on that address must (if correct) return the corresponding multiple names.

RFC 2181 (Clarifications to the DNS Specification), section 10.2:

10.2. PTR records

Confusion about canonical names has lead to a belief that a PTR
record should have exactly one RR in its RRSet. This is incorrect,
the relevant section of RFC1034 (section 3.6.2) indicates that the
value of a PTR record should be a canonical name. That is, it should
not be an alias. There is no implication in that section that only
one PTR record is permitted for a name. No such restriction should
   be inferred.

Note that while the value of a PTR record must not be an alias, there
is no requirement that the process of resolving a PTR record not
encounter any aliases. The label that is being looked up for a PTR
value might have a CNAME record. That is, it might be an alias. The
value of that CNAME RR, if not another alias, which it should not be,
will give the location where the PTR record is found. That record
gives the result of the PTR type lookup. This final result, the
value of the PTR RR, is the label which must not be an alias.

OK, there's a couple of big questions, which is how many DNS configs
actually obey this and how much application code allows for it, but
that's the spec.

how is this illegal? if you are residing your domain on a hosting service, this
makes sense to me. Granted its bad form and should have an A record to the host
for the main domain record, but if i had control over "otherdomain.com" and not
"example.com" and had to change the IP address, "example.com" would be dead
until i was able to reach the owner of that domain and have them change their
DNS info.

there is nothing that says you HAVE to have your tld labled in DNS. you would
just run into issues if someone types http://example.com into their web browser
and not get a result in DNS.

to clarify on CNAME's a bit better. CNAME's are nothing more than DNS aliases.
the reason you do not want to overuse them is that you could potentially create
a loop if you are not careful

www.site1.com CNAMEwww.host1.com.
www.host1.comCNAMEwww.site1.com.

syntactically, this is correct but would cause an infinite loop until a timeout
occurred on your computer.

also you want to limit how many weird names you get associated to one box. it
makes sense if you want www.example.com to point to your web server, which you
may have officially called "srvWeb", but looking at things like a mail server,
would you rather only have the entry:

mail.example.comCNAMEsrvMail.example.com.

or have to edit this:

pop3.example.comCNAMEsrvMail.example.com.
smtp.example.comCNAMEsrvMail.example.com.
imap.example.comCNAMEsrvMail.example.com.

The other interesting side would be reverse DNS lookups. Only one record would
be returned, and most likely would be the original A record. A nice example of
this is doing a basic "ping -a www.yahoo.com" which you get back that it is
resolving "www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com".

domains sharing records is better handled by $INCLUDE

$INCLUDE /path/db.ttl, which contains

$TTL 6h

$INCLUDE /path/db.ns, which contains

@ ns ns1.domain.tld.
@ ns ns2.domain.tld.

$INCLUDE /path/db.www, which contains

@ a ip.ad.re.ss
www a ip.ad.re.ss

etc.

Changing an include file changes all the zone files that include it, giving
enormous leverage, while removing the extra query required to resolve a CNAME
to canonical.

I try to use CNAMES as much as possible, for one very good reason. If say I
have web server with 1000 vhost on it. I have one A record for the server
and all the cnames point at that A record. Now i need to change the ip of
the server. I update the A record and add a reverse record and im done. IF I
had done it your way with all A records I would now have to go and edit
another 1000 records. Even worse if some of these domains are not under my

it becomes a complete mess. The chances of me convincing them all and

I think you are confusing basics of DNS records. you are partially correct in
that a DNS zone needs an initial A record to be able to translate a name to an
IP, but there is nothing wrong about setting up a CNAME to point to a record in
a different zone instead. you just cannot do a zone that has a CNAME only that
does not at some point to a valid A record. CNAMEs are forwarders only whereas
A records are actual lookups.

for proper way to set this up

The A record would be assigned for the main name that you want to associate to
an IP address.
The CNAME record just relates a different name to that original name. this
allows you to change the IP address of the server and only have to update the
original A record instead of every DNS record for that server.

for small number of vhosts, this would not really be an issue, but imagine if
you were hosting a couple hundred vhosts from a single IP and then had to
change that IP because you switched your ISP. It would take you a LONG time to
update them if they were all A records, but only a couple of seconds if you had
it properly set up as CNAME's

www.bobshosting.comA 192.168.0.1
www.vhost1.com CNAME www.bobshosting.com.
www.vhost2.com CNAME www.bobshosting.com.
www.vhost3.com CNAME www.bobshosting.com.
www.vhost4.com CNAME www.bobshosting.com.

You seem to have blocked FTP access by tweaking the firewall ruleset.

Either show us the ruleset you are using, or try setting in the
environment of the squid proxy the option "FTP_PASSIVE_MODE=1".

Fw: UK Currency Symbol in 7.2 Console

2009-05-30 Thread Graham Bentley

OK, this is where I am up to. I have plugged my 7.1 Release hard disc
back in and I get £ signs no problem. So, I then unplug my KVM and
mini keyboard and plug standard ps2 kb / ps2 mouse in. I do a minimal
install of 7.2 Release from DVD and make sure I have uk.cp850 in my
/etc/rc.conf

Guess what? Theres no difference - still no £ signs at console, I get
a beep. So theres some difference in the way 7.2 looks at things
compared to 7.1. Out of interest the kb controler is on this mobo
- Asus M2N68-AM

I think its a bug or mis-detection etc

Do I report this? Or ask for help on a different list?

I dont mind doinf whatever tests are required to resolve this issue.

Thanks!

I know this has probably been asked a thousand times but can someone give me
an example with ipfw to do loadbalancing between two ISP's.

We have two DSL links and realize that we wont get combined bandwidth.

All I want is for BSD to choose the different ISP's based on a probability.

hi,

since vlan came in i can't connect to any 11b network anymore using the
intel wireless card with the wpi driver and i can't figure out where
the problem is...
has anyone else experienced the same problem?

my "access point / router" is a notebook running openbsd with a rtw
card which is only capable of 11b mode.

all other modes (11g/11a) work fine so far with different aps i tested,
so it must have something to do with the vlan support and wpi driver i
think.

here are some details:

my notebook is an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet running 8.0 current:

FW: Unstable File Server

2008-06-25 Thread Marcel Grandemange
Good day!

I hope someone might be able to assist me over here!

I have a multipurpose FreeBSD server, and one of the roles is being a file
server.

This role however seems to continuously bring the machine to it's knees.

I have tried seeking help elsewhere namely

http://www.daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=980

But still can't seem to get this going. Id really appreciate some input,
thank you!

Re: FW: VMWare Tools for FreeBSD

2008-03-18 Thread Alexander Sack
Paul:

I'd have to look at this some more. I got much further in the porting
when I hit another snag with the vmblock driver (the inline assembly
needs to be __asm__ instead of asm or something needs to process it
that way for it to work, I also hacked around a vfsops issue which I'm
not 100% sure what should really be there) and then all of it needs to
be devtested. I use VMWare Fusion and have installed the existing
vmtools that come with the product along with installing the
individual X11 vmware driver which works for me but I agree it would
be nice to have full port to FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE.

I'm sorry for not giving you patch files its just I was doing this on
and off as a exercise to learn a little bit more about it

I believe at least now as you said, the userland stuff builds fine now.

Thanks!

_ac_enaddr is because arpcom as defined in net/if_arp.h no longer
exists. Typically the protocol bits are stuffed in if_l2com (layer
2).

I made the macro in net_compat.h

# define VXN_SC2ENADDR(softc)(IF_LLADDR(VXN_SC2IFP(softc))

and then removed the "&" from both references in if_vxn.c as this
macro already returns a pointer to char.

That got me past this problem. Btw, this isn't an official port since
I didn't really rectify the net_compat.h stuff (I suppose you could
make the 60 to 700055, etc.).

I'm still getting some further issues with vnodeops and vfsops with

Well, you're way beyond my skill level now. I'll be happy to create a port for
this, but someone with a much deeper knowledge of FreeBSD and C is going to
have to resolve the problems with the modules.

If someone is interested in doing that, I'll submit the patches to the
developers *and* add them to the port so that it can be committed. (Other than
the kernel modules, the software builds fine from what I can tell.)

Thanks. I was contacted privately by someone else on the list and advised of
the same thing. I chose to remove the lines mentioning MNT_NODEV from the
hgfsmounter.c file. I wasn't aware you could simply define it as 0. Which is
preferable?

I configured my build environment via the README with ./configure
LDFLAGS="/usr/local/lib" etc.

I'm compiling and making without problems now that the NODEV problem is cleared
up, but I didn't define any LDFLAGS. Should I?

Yes, I got it as well. I was going to create a port for it, but I have no idea
how to solve the make problem. If there is a programmer reading this that
wants to work with me to get the software to make on FreeBSD, I'll be happy to
submit and maintain the port.

* Disk wiping and shrinking
* Time synchronization
* Automatic guest screen resolution resizing

That's not what OP is asking. He wants to run FreeBSD as VM in ESX.
There's currently no support from VMWare for FreeBSD, but it

I figured that was what he was asking, but we should probably

the original post was either from someone who didn't use English

OK, maybe I was not clear enough so I will try again.
I want to run FreeBSD as a VM Guest on a VMWare ESX Server. Currently
there is no problem with it and it works fine. The problems arise when
you want to take advantage of the HA ability of ESX Server, as it only
supports Virtual Machines with the VM Tools running.

So what I am asking is if someone has ever though about porting the
VMWare Tools to run in a FreeBSD Virtual Machine image.

Terry, Jeff Dickens replied this morning - perhaps his mail

Ted / Jeff,

Much the same reason IBM like[ds] JCL on main frames. Every time
somebody messed it up, it required more computer time on their
iron. The army of ``systems engineers'' required to feed the
beasts also benefit from the unnecessary complexity.

Subject: Darwin Calendar Server not starting - Kerberos problem

I've just been trying to get a calendar server running for my network, and have tried a couple of options including webcalendar, and an apache calDAV module (this won't build due to a lack of xattr.h.

I ended trying to build the Darwin Calendar Server based on these instructions (http://www.royhooper.ca/blog/articles/2007/07/07/installing-the-darwin-calendar-server-on-freebsd) which were quite reasonable, and which I finally worked out (see freebsd-ports list). But it won't start. It loops saying that kerberos is not supported.

According to the instructions, kerberos needs to be there, but not configured. So I didn't configure it originally, but when it failed I tried configuring it. I started it, but it fails again saying its incorrectly configured, and I have no idea whats wrong. Apparently the database is not operational or something which I can't work out as I have no idea about kerberos and I followed the instructions in the handbook.

Any ideas? What info do I need to post? Thanks in advance guys

which I can't work out as I have no idea about kerberos and I followed the
instructions in the handbook.

Any ideas? What info do I need to post? Thanks in advance guys

And the person bouncing the mails should check its settings : SPF must
NOT be applied to header sender address but o enveloppe sender
address. This person is breaking all mailing lists.

You're sending from a hotmail.com address, without using a hotmail.com

as outgoing mail relay.

I am getting this messages, too, for the address of [EMAIL PROTECTED],
as OP.

And I _am_ using the gmx.net smtp as outgoing relay (just double-checked).

My bet is 163.com screwed their setup.

Ugh, I should have checked your mail headers before posting this. You are
sending from a hotmail.com server. So, either hotmail has their SPF-records
misconfigured (which I would guess isn't the case, because lots of people
would complain in this case), or the final recipients SPF setup on their
mailserver (mail.163.com) is broken (which I guess is most probably the case
here).

I personally think it's a misconfigured server. I get bounces with/without
correct SPF as well.

You're sending from a hotmail.com address, without using a hotmail.com server
as outgoing mail relay.

Someone who's reading this list (and thus gets your messages delivered, even
though you're not explicitly sending it to them) is boucing your messages
because of the SPF record for hotmail.com in place, which lists the outgoing
mail servers that messages from the hotmail.com-domain is allowed to come
from (and the one you use isn't among them).

Read up on SPF (Sender Policy Framework) to know what's going on behind the
scenes.

Thanks in advance for your help. I am a newbie trying to install FreeBSD for
the first time. I have an HP desktop computer with 64MB of SDRAM, a 12 GB hard
drive and a Pentium II processor running at 333 MHz. I am trying to put
FreeBSD 6.2 on this machine but have not had any luck. I've read the
documentation, but stil can't seem to figure out what to do.

I downloaded the ISO mage for the "bootonly" disk and checked that it using
checksum.md5, then burned a disk image using InfrRecorder to a fresh CD-R. I set the
bios on my HP to boot from the CDROM drive and put the disk in. It walks me through the
installation process but never gives me a chance
to exit. I select the Standard installation but get stuck shortly thereafter
when I try to tell it to use the option to set up for a single user using the
X-Window system. It won't let me select multiple elements like bin and
library. I get stuck and then it never completes and won't let me out of the
setup screen series.

Please let me know if I am not providing enough information above. I welcome
any help. Thanks.

Please have a look at the handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-diff-media.html

esp. section 2.13.1

The ISO you downloaded cannot be used for offline (CD-ROM based)
installation. It is intended to pull install files from the Internet.
Download at least the first full cd. Download all the CDs if you plan to
install packages from the disks. Bear in mind 6.2-RELEASE is now a years
old, and the packages in the CD are quite aged. There are other methods
of getting updated programs once the base system is installed. However
as a newbie getting a first feel of the system this is not terribly
important. Please make sure you read the excellent handbook.

Thanks for your immediate response

Yes, I spend two days and found out there are lot of tips in your

After compiling the Free BSD Kernel and making some changes on my system
then how do I make the installable CD/DVD from my source (My Free BSD) to

One more question: Can I use ZFS on Free BSD?

Before actually tuning FreeBSD (or any other OS for that matter) to your
business needs (which we don't know...) you should take more time to
familiarize yourself with the system, perform test installs and so on.
Also don't forget to read the documentation. FreeBSD has an excellent
documentation set, comprising of FAQ, articles and an excellent handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/

The handbook will answer most of your questions. Many others you will be
able to answer yourself by experimenting and gaining experience. You
will only get useful answers from the list if your questions are quite
specific and you have done "your homework" beforehand.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, and figure you just
haven't learned yet how to effectively find documentation. These are
some documents that may be of use to you for tuning FreeBSD.

Kernel config:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig-building.html

System configuration files:
  man 8 config

General performance tuning:
  man 7 tuning

Security tuning:
  man 7 security

Security tuning for the X Window System:
  man 7 Xsecurity

Searching for FreeBSD docs on the web:
Go to Google and add "freebsd handbook" to your search string, with
quotes. If that doesn't work, try "freebsd" (without quotes) instead.

Searching for information in manpages:
Use either the "apropos" or "man -k" command, with a search term as an
argument. For instance, "apropos tuning" or "man -k tuning" would have
led to the tuning(7) manpage. When you find a manpage that is in the
same general topic area, but you still want more information, check the
"SEE ALSO" section of the manpage. The "FILES" section is sometimes
useful for finding more information, too -- and sometimes, the listed
  files have their own manpages.

Learning to research your own answers is a good idea for a whole lot of
reasons. FreeBSD is one of the most well-documented OSes I've ever seen,
so perhaps your tendency to ask questions without bothering to try
looking up the information in standard documentation first is based on
experience with other, less well-documented OSes. Once you become more
familiar with the quality and extensiveness of FreeBSD documentation, you
will surely find that some simple research is faster for most tasks than
any user community mailing list or telephone support line could ever be.

Hope that helps.

Processor should pose no problem. Additionally, I find nvidia chipsets
to be widely compatible with FreeBSD. You don't mention devices like
wireless and ethernet, if you do know the models, you may be able to
find if they are supported in the release notes / hardware compatibility
of FreeBSD. The graphics card will be no problem with either the nv open
source driver or the proprietary Nvidia from ports (or from nvidia
directly).

About your questions on dual boot, since I have a notebook dual booting
(actually triple booting) Vista, FreeBSD and Linux I can give you some
hand on information:

- The info you have been given about Partition Magic, GParted and
PartedMagic should work fine. You could use any of these tools to shrink
your Windows Vista partition. Make sure Vista boots after this
operation. The new MS loader seems to break rather easily. In the event
it does not boot you will need a Vista DVD to boot and select to repair.
This sounds more frightening than it really is, it does not happen often
and the repair works (automatically).

- When installing FreeBSD, when asked about the boot manager select NOT
to install it. Do NOT let it touch the MBR. Vista uses a different
loader from XP and it will probably fail to boot afterwards.

- When installation is finished, you will not be able to boot into
FreeBSD, but fear not. Boot into Vista and install the free EasyBCD
program:

http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

With this, you can add the choice for FreeBSD to your Vista bootloader
(a new system called BCD) . It is trivially easy to setup and works
extremely well.

Hope this helps.

What do you mean by "running out of mount-points"? Do you mean you don't
have any more bsdlabel entries available (e.g. the "a" part of
"ad0s1a")? If so, you should probably stop using bsdlabels for
everything except the root partition (i.e. make ad0s1a the root, make
all other space into ad0s2 and sub-partition ad0s2 with GPT. This
"weird" setup is required because 7.0 can't boot from GPT).

In your case, it doesn't really matter from the technical point of view.
It's easier for administration when the journal is embedded on the same
slice as the file system.

>Btw. are 10gb
> enough for journaling of 6 partitions? Or do I need one dedicated
> partition for journaling each?

Required journal size depends on the speed of your drive and journal
switch (sync) time intervals. You need at least (drive_speed *
switch_time * 2) space for the journal (e.g. for a drive that does 50
MB/s and for switch time of 10 seconds, you need 50*10*2=1 GB). The
reasoning behind the magic number "2" is that you need two journal
areas, one being used and the other committed.

You probably don't want to use ZFS with 512 MB of RAM if you need the
machine up 24/7. If you have that many file systems, one journal per
file system is about the only thing you can do (and it doesn't matter if
the file system is on a regular or gmirrored drive). A slightly simpler
solution would be to mirror the whole drives (ad0+ad2) but it's mostly a
cosmetical issue.

Subject: Best way for a gmirrored gjournal?

Hi all,

Currently I'm trying to install a new server and need some hints on how
to best configure filesystems using gmirror and gjournal.

The server in question is a amd64 with 512mb of ram and 2x 80gb sata
hdds. So I was thinking of a mount-point layout like the following:

ad0s1
 / (1gb)
 swap(1gb)
 /var(8gb)
 /tmp(1gb)
 /home (4gb)
 /usr (13gb)
 /jails (39gb)
ad0s2
 10gb for journaling

Which would leave a space of 10gb for journaling. I digged through the
mailinglist-archives and man-pages of gmirror and gjournal but all I
ended up with are questions and doubts :)

Now I wanted to create 2 mirrors (gm0s1 and gm0s2). Gmirror gm0s1
containing the slices ad0s1 and ad2s1, while gm0s2 should contain ad0s2
and ad2s2. I created 2 slices, as with the above shown partitioning I
was running out of mount-points for this slice.

Is such a layout reasonable? Or is it stupid to use a dedicated slice
just for journaling and better skip e.g /tmp partition to leave space
for a dedicated journaling partition on this slice? Btw. are 10gb
enough for journaling of 6 partitions? Or do I need one dedicated
partition for journaling each?

If I skip using a separate partition for journaling data, gjournal keeps
telling me that e.g. the root partion of 1gb is too small for
jorunaling. Would it be save to decrease journal size altough man-page
discourages?

What do you people out there suggest? How do you handle systems with
gmirror and gjournal combined? Or even use ZFS although ram is limited
(as the machine will serve up several jails with e.g. postgres)?

I'm really looking forward to suggestions from you. I intentionally
directed this mail to current@ as I think that here are the most people
around with experience on gjournal. But if I better should direct this
mail to questions@ I'm happy to do so, too.

Best regards,

Patrick

A good combination could be:

Dovecot (imap pop server)
Postfix (MTA smtp with mysql support)
Mysql (database server to store user accounts aliases enz)
Postfixadmin (webgui to manage users, domains, aliases in the mysql database.
Also provides out of office) (I would use the svn version.)
Lighttpd (webserver for webmail)
Squirrelmail (webgui for webmail), or use imp from the horde framework.

Works like a charm for me.

Direct root login from ssh is disabled for good reason, so please leave
it this way. If however you cannot su to root from your user account,
this is not a problem with ssh configuration, it is simply a problem of
your account not belonging to the wheel group. Check it using the following:

id

you will see a list of groups. If you do not see "wheel" under these
groups, you are not able to su. In FreeBSD only members of the wheel
group can su root.
You can change this with the pw usermod command, something like:

pw usermod -g -G wheel

see man pw for details.
As for sudo, it is easy to setup, but you have to install it from ports:
cd /usr/ports/security/sudo
make install clean
then run visudo to configure

Hope this helps

FW: Request to mailing list freebsd-hackers rejected

2007-08-11 Thread James Hicks
Per instructions from the moderator below i'm making this post to the
free-bsd questions mailing list.

I'm building a samba server. I have an XP laptop using putty via ssh to
remotley administer. I cannot use putty to logon as root directly. If I
logon as my regular user I cannot su/sudo in as root. I tried modifying the
sshd_config file with AllowUsers [EMAIL PROTECTED] This didn't work. Any suggestions?
Im somewhat new to UNIX and nery new to FreeBSD, so my indepth knowledge is
not the best.
