2010-02-21 Thread pepeto

Follow-up Comment #5, bug #15422 (project freeciv):

=== S2_2 patch ===
 * no changes to the network definitions

Actually, I forgot to mention that it is possible to perform such changes in
a stable branch. You must then to add in the capability string (in
version.in) a non-mandatory (named optional in that file), which doesn't
begins with a '+'. Then after, you need in packets.def to add
'add-cap(my_new_cap)' after the field you want to add, and
'remove-cap(my_new_cap)' after the field you want to remove. Remember that
the original configuration must leave intact, so the changes would affect
only new clients and new servers, whereas old packets would be sent if at
least one of them is old.

=== trunk patch ===
Does the packet city_short_info really need that information? This packet is
used to send cities you cannot see internals.

Follow-up Comment #10, bug #15422 (project freeciv):

You just renamed a field, so it is useless to change the capabilities. It
would be useful to add a field like:

UINT16 illness_trade; add-cap(illness_trade)

Anyway, it doesn't require such changes, it is useless. In a other hand,
because there are currently many fields going to be removed from that packet,
maybe all changes should be merge into the same optional capability.

Yes there are no changes in the structure of the network packages (only
renaming an integer) but somehow I have to decide if it is an old version,
i.e the value of 'illness' is send over the network, or a new version which
will only send the value of 'illness_trade'. Are there over capabilities than
network capabilities?

 You can add a send_city_info(city_owner(pcity), pcity) after
 it is recalculated.

I check the code and found the function establish_trade_route() there the
recalculation can be done. Furthermore, the illness is recalculated after
loading a savegame.

I am not sure to understand but if the value reflects the same behaviour that
the old one, it doesn't require a capability change. The name of the fields
are not sent through the network. However, if this value does not have the
same meaning of the old one, there should be:

UINT16 illness; remove-cap(illness_trade)
UINT16 illness_trade; add-cap(illness_trade)

and both fields should be set when preparing the packet for sending.

Follow-up Comment #14, bug #15422 (project freeciv):

 I am not sure to understand but if the value reflects the same
 behaviour that the old one, it doesn't require a capability
 change.

Both variables contain different values; I used the definitions of 'add-cap'
and 'remove-cap'.

=== patch for S2_2 ===

fix illness due to trade (S2_2)

* send illness_trade (illness due to trade) to the clients; this replaces the
variable illness, which is not needed as it will be recalculated each time by
the clients
* activate this function only if the (optional) capability trade_illness is
present in S2_2
* rename some functions
* recalculate illness after loading a savegame or trade route change

Needs an update for the network capabilities!

Again some comments:
* We should avoid the changes of translatable strings in a stable branch,
especially when just modifying the format.
* in packhand.c there should the test to know what is the real value to read
from the packet, not assuming the server sent trade_illness.

2010-02-21 Thread Jacob Nevins

Follow-up Comment #1, bug #15441 (project freeciv):

Looks like a colourmap/colour-depth issue to me (not that I'm likely to be
able to fix it).

Perhaps it would help if you posted the output of xdpyinfo here.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #15446] airbase not working on swamp?

2010-02-21 Thread Andreas

URL:
  http://gna.org/bugs/?15446

 Summary: airbase not working on swamp?
 Project: Freeciv
Submitted by: anbe
Submitted on: Sunday 02/21/2010 at 21:00
Category: None
Severity: 3 - Normal
Priority: 5 - Normal
  Status: None
 Assigned to: None
Originator Email:
 Open/Closed: Open
 Release: S2_2
 Discussion Lock: Any
Operating System: GNU/Linux
 Planned Release:

___

Details:

There seems to be something broken with airbases built on swamp tiles. I
can't put an AWACS in sentry mode on such a tile - works fine on an adjacent
airbase on plains.
Also the airbase seems to disappear when a fortress is built on the swamp
tile that already has an airbase (and vice versa). There are no problems with
having both an airbase and a fortress on other tiles (which extends AWACS
vision a bit).

[Freeciv-Dev] Freeciv and Civilization: copyrights, trademarks and patents

2010-02-21 Thread Andreas Røsdal
Hello!

I think that the Freeciv project should do a full review of
copyrights, trademarks and patents that it might infringe
from the various Civilization versions released by Firaxis/Microprose.
I don't think that the project violates any of there rights,
but it would be better to review these issues thoroughly
just to be sure.

The Freeciv FAQ mentions this issue: http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ
There have been debates on this and the honest answer seems to be:
we don't know. The link to the debates on this issue is broken.
Perhaps other people know more about these issues than me, but here are
some things that might be worth checking further.

* Trademarks:
Sid Meier's Civilization IV, Civ, Civilization, 2K Games, the 2K logo,
Firaxis Games, the Firaxis Games logo, and Take-Two Interactive Software
are all trademarks and/or registered trademarks of Take-Two Interactive
Software, Inc. from http://www.civilization.com/
Does Freeciv violate the Civ trademark there?

* Copyrights:
The FAQ states that Freeciv doesn't contain any actual material from the
commercial Civilization games. However, it would still be a good idea to
check that Freeciv's technology trees, unit lists, buildings and game
rules aren't too similar to the Civilization ones that they violate any
copyrights. It is obvious that Freeciv has borrowed a lot of ideas from
Civ, but are these ideas intellectual properties that someone owns, and
that are restricted from re-use?

* Patents:
I haven't found any relevant patents, but haven't looked much yet.
Does any company have any relevant patents in this area?

I would suggest that these issues are checked, and that other potential
intellectual property rights are investigated. If there are any areas
where Freeciv is in a grey-area with regards to using ideas from Civ,
then I would suggest that these are replaced with new content.

What do you think about looking closer at these issues?
Looking over these issues can give the Freeciv project, and potential
Freeciv contributors the confidence to know that they are
not violating any copyright laws and will not recieve any cease and
desist letters from Sid.

Regards,
Andreas R.

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #15440] Translation About Ruleset in Help menu

2010-02-21 Thread Jacob Nevins

Follow-up Comment #3, bug #15440 (project freeciv):

 In addition, when I select the appropriate menu, I get the last item, not
the _About Ruleset_ one.

I don't see this, but that's presumably because I'm running Freeciv in
English.

I'm slightly dubious about changing mystrdup(HELP_RULESET_ITEM) to
mystrdup(_(About Ruleset)), as this duplicates the string About Ruleset
in two places -- helpdata.c and client/include/helpdlg_g.h, where
HELP_RULESET_ITEM is defined.

Is the right fix not to change all the definitions in helpdlg_g.h from the
form

#define HELP_RULESET_ITEM About Ruleset

to

#define HELP_RULESET_ITEM N_(About Ruleset)

(and add client/include/helpdlg_g.h to po/POTFILES.in)? Then you could write
mystrdup(_(HELP_RULESET_ITEM)).

Feels like this is a long-standing issue probably masked by the fact that the
strings defined there are also duplicated across all the clients. (In fact,
since the string About Ruleset appears i18n-marked in many clients,
mystrdup(_(HELP_RULESET_ITEM)) should work without marking up helpdlg_g.h.

Details:

Just tried the voting system for the first time in a contrived situation to
see how it worked, and ran into this:

Started server with an existing savegame with server/freeciv-server -f
savegame.sav.bz2, and started three local clients with different usernames
which connected to that server. Clients now in a pregame screen (with the
player/flag/nation/connection list, More Game Options..., chat window,
Ready button).

Ran cmdlevel basic on the server. Then from one of the clients, tried
changing the migration option via the GUI (this is settable mid-game, don't
know if it should be). This triggered a vote, as expected, and all clients
popped up a voting bar.

However, clicking on any of the voting buttons on any of the clients gives
the server message

1: got a packet of type 149 outside S_S_RUNNING

(149 is PACKET_VOTE_SUBMIT in common/packets.def), which isn't what I was
expecting. Typing /vote yes in the client's chat window did work.

S2_2 r16893 (which is 2.2.0 plus today's post-unfreeze checkins).
