I doubt it...this sounds like something's fried. With luck it's the
USB devices: the keyboard or the mouse.
You can try unplugging them and just powering it up with the front
button, see what happens.

I've had this intermittently with various PowerBooks and Macs and find
it's usually solve it by setting Processor Performance to Highest in
the Energy Saver System Pref. I don't know that that is a perfect
solution, but it's worked before to silence erratic fan behavior.

I have os8 and debian lenny on two quadras.
I have os9 and debian squeeze on a powerbookG3 250 (that's the next
upcoming version of Linux) and it works well for

good at many things like video editing. I have really no need to upgrade my
iMac G3, it's does a great job of a local file back up.
I'm even going to keep my hackintosh running 10.5 for a long while.
