Ways to clean up old Macs, environmentally.
1 way to clean up an old Mac is to recycle a CRT monitor, and buy an
LCD, especially a LED backed LCD.
another way to do it is to upgrade to new/newer environmentally clean Macs.

This makes sense IFF the hardware has died.

If the hardware is functional then adding it to the trash stream is
simply NOT an environmentally friendly thing to do! I don't care if
trash stream is actual trash or a recycling program -- WORKING
hardware should NEVER be scrapped. As long as its kept as-is, the
hazardous materials are locked in and we aren't spending the energy
or resources (water etc) to process them!

I have numerous older CRT monitors I have been given or have found
that still work fine. I don't see tossing them until they have died.
The Sony VAIO monitor (a nice Trinitron) I am using now has USB ports
on it. First monitor I have owned that has them. If the CRT dies I
might still keep the thing around if the USB ports still work as it
would be a shame to toss them out.

Ok, I can see trying to justify things because the newer hardware
might use less electricity IF its power supply is lower wattage and
more efficient. From the consumer point of view, the electric
savings is nice. But from the environmental POV - again, that CRT
didn't need to be recycled YET.

True! Plus, most places I know (scrap yards) won't take the whole
monitor. In my case I need to take out the CRT and the only part of it
they will take is the end with all that copper. The plastic either
needs to be taken to a plastic recycler or trashed (I have a local
place that takes plastic). The cord (to the computer) can also be
recycled but alone it ain't worth squat.

I see this like this whole Compact Florescent effort that we've
bought into. The mercury in them makes them one of the worst
technologies we've ever used. If you break one at home, technically,
you're supposed to report it to your local poison control center so
they can initiate the necessary environmental cleanup! Beyond that,
their light is awful, and they DONT last the n years they're supposed
to. The only way CF lights are a good deal is if you're a stock
holder in the companies that make them. The same as for buying new
computer hardware just to replace perfectly good working hardware...

- They last longer if kept on longer than the old indascents. Turning
them on and off is not good for their longevity (so the experts say).
Also, they have gotten better in the light quality aspect (again, this
is from the experts who test these things for places like Consumer
Reports).
But you are right on the whole mercury thing (the companies say they
are working on this) and when they do burn out you are NOT supposed to
toss them in the trash (Hazardous Waste Disposal is the stream theya
re supposed to go in).

Back in the old SCSI days, I remember using search utilities that

I'd say take it out the Firewire case, plug it in the system. If the

What's next depends on the version of OS you're running. All versions
of OSX have allowed for more simplified setups, all pretty well
documented in the Help sections.
Check out Simplified

You can limit the programs they can use, the places they can save
files, whether or not they can even add programs. It's all in the
simplified setup (and in 10.4 and 10.5, at least) in the Parental

it a non-admin one,. then apply Parental controls to it. In 10.5 there
is abutton in the acocunt setup pane.

IN earlier versions of the OS they were called Simplified accounts,
iirc.

There's a ton of info on Apple's web site about it.

Presently my Yosemite running os X 10.2.8 does not mount the PC
formatted HD, all I can do is format the drive.

It would be nice if I could set up my Yosemite to read PC formatted
HD, maybe some software? Long ago I recall Access PC.

OS X has ALWAYS been able to read and write FAT32-formatted drives.
However most Windows systems XP and newer use NTFS formatted drives

OS X 10.3 and higher can read NTFS, but you need to hack things around
to write to them. (using MacFUSE and NTFS3G)

However with 10.2.8, you're ool, I think. I don't remember ever being
able to get NTFS working on the Mac back then.

I hate Epson printers. They use a technology that keeps the same print
heads for the life of the printer and use a nipple injection system that
frequently gums up and requires maintenance using more of your ink.

HP on the other hand, when you replace the cartridge you replace the ink (it
is self contained so no messy spills of clogged nozzles) and the print head
all at the same time.

Brother lasers, HL-5250DN (30 ppm, duplexing) and MFC-8460N (30 ppm,
non-duplexing, scan/copy/print), both of which I purchased as so-
called factory refurbs, but were actually brand-new in every

The two named, above, share the same consumables, and ... so far ...

Search for the model number and refurbished to find a seller.

My HL-5250DN was purchased from Amazon.com. My MFC-8460N was purchase
from JustTheFAX.com. Both offered same day shipping which was free.

Wound up paying no more than one-half price for each.

Both are based upon the same marking engine, and both have PSL3
emulation, network printing, and expandable RAM to at least 544 MB.

The cheap ones don't have expandable RAM, and don't have network
printing, nor PSL3 emulation.

Re: Which printer do you like?

Epson is really good at supporting open source, so their printers will work
out of the box with Linux. Right now I have a Canon that is connected by
ethernet to my router so that my whole family can print to it. Very cool,
but no dice with printing when I am using Linux.
Canon has cool features, but I miss the slightly more basic Epson printers I
have had, unfortunately, they don't seem to be available in my area and the
shops that sell Apple hardware are really pushing Canon printers hard.

Good hunting,

Brian

I'm a big fan of Canon printers. I've had my MP600 all-in-one for
about a year and a half, maybe two years now, and it's been great. The
print quality is excellent, and I've never had to deal with a clogged
nozzle like I always had to back when I had my Epson. Also, the Epson
was like the Hummer of Printers—it went through ink crazy fast. The
Canon is more like the Prius of Printers. It gets more work than the
Epson ever did, and the ink cartridges last longer.

Another major benefit of the Canon—and I believe that HP does this too—
is that you can still print when one color is low or even entirely
out. I remember that you couldn't do that on the Epson. And, the ink
cartridges supplied by Canon are transparent, so you know that when
your printer tells you it's out of ink, it's actually telling the
truth. (Epson got sued awhile ago because printers reported there was
no ink and refused to print even though there was ink still in the
 cartridges.)

I hope that helps you make your decision.

 Isaac

It will require patience...I remember being very excited that 10.3 was
going to have NTFS compatibility, but it's slooow.

G'day Cheryl

I happen to like Epson printers, but not the cheap entry level ones.
I've got a Stylus Photo R390 (4 years old) which uses a 6 cartridge
Claria ink system, good for 100 year ink lifetime, and have never had
a blockage.

It's mainly used for printing photos, (for home, and my wifes
scrapbooking) and I believe that Epson make the best photo printers on
the planet; the quality when compared to a friends Canon was quite
noticable.

However, Epson printers are a bit expensive to run as you need to use
Epson ink (never use recharged ink) and Epson paper (except for
general printing), and if photos are not your priority, I'd look
elsewhere. My friends cheap Canon was replaced 3 times under warranty,
and he ended up getting a HP. I believe that the photo quality of the
HP is also not as good as the Epson.

Regards

Santa

Canon Pixma iP4500 rocks! It has duplex printing, although it does work better
when the paper is coming from the rear paper slot instead of the cassette. I
had an Epson C84 and a HP, and the Epson sucked.

natd issue, perhaps security problem?

2008-12-22 Thread Kris Tilford

My dual 2.3 GHz G5 w/10.5.6 froze strangely with the cursor mouse
still moving with the spinning beachball icon, and no other
functionality. The clock was frozen also. I waited 5 minutes and
nothing changed. No commands for Force Quit worked, so I rebooted by
holding the power button on the case.

Upon reboot something different happened. I have Little Snitch
installed. A process called natd wanted to connect to local.host
via many UDP ports (about 20 total) in the series between 49159 and
49195.

A Google search of natd and OS X seems to indicate there may be
some security issue, however this report says that ALL versions of OS
X are vulnerable EXCEPT version 10.5.6 that I'm using?:

http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/32874

I allowed these connections in Little Snitch, thinking they were
normal OS X things, but now I'm not sure? This was on initial boot, no
applications were running other than the login items. Here's the login
items list:
iTunesHelper, ATI Monitor, Airport Base Station Agent,
FontExplorerXAutoload, SMARTReporter, gtslauncherdaemon, EyeTV Helper.

I've rebooted several times, and each time this entire string of natd
connections wants to connect. This is very different behavior than
before. The strange freeze with the mouse working but everything else
frozen seems to me that it might be a buffer overflow as minimally
described in the recent security bulletin above?

Any ideas?

Titanium 400Mhz Powerbook won't start

2008-12-22 Thread nestamicky

So I spent all Sunday replacing the hinges on this powerbook (400Mhz,
Titanium). Now I'm done and it won't give a beep. It did before I
started the work, but I'm uncertain as to whether I'm using the right
PSU. Someone said I can use the 45W PSU and it should work. I have a few
of those that I used, including a 2002 flying-saucer looking PSU. None
worked. I know the adapters work.

Have you opened one of these before...anything I should take to
heartlike, in the case of a Pismo, making sure the processor is
seated properly?

Thanks in advance for reading, thinking and responding.

AGP G4 in a BW case

2008-12-22 Thread John Ruschmeyer
A question for the hardware experts.

I have a rev.1 BW G3 which I am happy with, but would really like to move
to a G4, preferably something later than a Yikes.

I was thinking that it might be cheaper (at least on shipping) if I could
somehow swap an AGP motherboard into the BW case and use the existing
drives, PS, etc. Based on my reading of the web, it seems like I might be
able to get away with swapping in a Sawtooth motherboard, provided I also
swap the back panel.

Will this work (Sawtooth in a BW case/PS)? And, if so, have any of you done
it already?

Thanks.

John Ruschmeyer

I just upgraded from a 1560 Cannon printer to a refurbished MP530 when

By the way, Cannon has had a long, close and fruitful relation ship

Wasn't the last Canon printer which it made for Apple the Color
LaserWriter?

Because of Canon's higher transfer prices, Apple went away from Canon
as soon as it made sense.

Then, when everyone and his uncle were shipping lasers for under
$200, Apple got out of the printer business altogether.

smaller in the center. If you use the newer smaller size PSU with a

We have run all the invoices for our biz for many years with what to me is
the work horse of printers - the Epson Stylus 740. I think we paid $40 for
it about 9 years ago. I have 10 generic cartridges I fill at a time with

cartridges, and it still prints like the day it was born. About 4 cases of
paper have gone through it. We recycle used paper (print on backsides) when
possible, which means sometimes a turned corner will cause a terriffic

If someone offerered me $40 for it today I'd say no thanks.

iTunes / iPod / update snafoo

2008-12-22 Thread D Stubbs
Hi Folks,
Somewhere in all the upgrading I have been doing I got a glitch in my iPod
that no forum archinves I can find ( including the not-active LEM iPod
forum, and Apples tech pages) has really tackled. It's unusable till I solve
it.
The most obvious malady is that the iPod screen shows the error message no
card inserted.
It happened right after one of my updates of iTunes software, I don't
remember which. Originally, after the error showed up, the desktop and
iTunes would recognize it, but no longer is it even recognized.
I have done 'reset' numurous times, both from the standard two fingered
approach and from within diagnostics.
I have re-installed iTunes, and OS 10.4.11
Battery is charged, various usb hookups tried.
The 'no card inserted' seems to mean it is trying to default to a camera
photo upload mode - which I have never used.

Re: Perian Update

2008-12-22 Thread Kris Tilford

On my Tiger 10.4.11 Yikes!, I recently lost Quicktime
playback in Firefox looking at MySpace.

This isn't a QuickTime issue, or a Perian issue.

MySpace uses a different player called FIM Media Player (FIM=FOX
Interactive Media) which is related to the player that FOX Network
uses on the Fox website (FOX owns MySpace). On the FOX website there
is link to download some software for Mac OS X (if you need the plugin
to view FOX media), but it only enables the FOX website player, but
not the MySpace player.

This is a known incompatibility with Macs, and likely doesn't have an
easy fix. You may be able to downgrade your version of Flash Player to
help, but this didn't help me in 10.5.6. The FIM Player appears to be
a Flash Player add-on, and FOX network installs a plugin called
MoveNetworks Quantum Media Player which definitely is a Flash Player
plugin of some sort.

If you Ctl-click on the MySpace video window that won't play it should
gave you a version of the FIM Player that's not working. MySpace has
been upgrading these players regularly - I've seen FIM version #'s
increasing from 1.0.0.99 to 1.0.1.119. I think they quit working with
Macs last summer sometime? I know of no solution other than using a
Windows PC or running Windows on your Mac.

2008-12-22 Thread Kris Tilford

I've got a dual G5 that came with an Apple SuperDrive that was branded
as a Sony DW-Q28A with firmware KAS7. I became aware that this Sony
drive was actually a rebranded LiteOn SOHW-1693S. The LiteOn drive had
many firmware updates after the Apple drive was issued that added
support for many more types of media, and better burn reliability.

The LiteOn firmwares were in the series starting KS01 and increased
through KS09 and then KS0A and finally KS0B (the current version). I
believe the Apple firmware (KAS7) would be about the same as LiteOn
KS07 in vintage, roughly 5 updates behind. One reason I embarked on
this was many of my newer DVD discs would only burn at the slowest 1x
or 2x speed even though they were much faster media. Plus, I was
having many coasters (bad burns) that seemed more related to something
in the speed control of the burn (i.e. firmware) than a possible bad
optical unit. When the OEM Apple drive with Apple's KAS7 firmware was
tested in a PC it tested poorly.

I recently embarked on to upgrade this firmware, which was done by
placing the G5's SuperDrive into a Windows PC since all the firmware
flash programs are Windows only. I downloaded the current LiteOn KS0B
and patched it to give full media support and added functionality
using OmniPatcher, and then used HexEdit 3.3 to change the KS0B back
to KAS7 so that it would appear identical to the original firmware
so that I wouldn't loose my Apple Supported status in OS X, even
though I don't think that matters in Leopard now? It upgraded fine and
now I have a hybrid with the latest possible firmware that supports
the most possible media types (331 types of discs), and it appears to
be the OEM version just in case I ever boot with Tiger or Panther.

There is also a small program that can change the unit to rpc1 (DVD
region free). I took a Sharpie and wrote on my drive upgraded with
LiteOn SOHW-1693S KS0B patched firmware rpc1 because Apple System
Profiler continues to show it as the OEM Sony DW-Q28A KAS7. If
anyone has this model Sony DW-Q28A and would like to upgrade it with
my patched version of the LiteOn firmware I can email you the Windows
PC flash program with patched firmware and the rpc1 program. It's
relatively easy if you have a Windows PC to place the SuperDrive into
for upgrading. I make no guarantees, upgrading firmware is always
slightly risky, and you might kill your unit. I've kept a copy of the
original Apple KAS7 firmware (which isn't available on the internet
AFAIK) as a precaution, so you probably could downgrade to where you
started if you had problems. I haven't used mine enough to see if it's
helped with my burn speeds or bad burn issues, but it reads all discs
fine still.

Parts for all Canon lasers are widely available.

The mechanical design is so good most can achieve 1,000,000
impressions (less for personal lasers, of course).

I still have LaserWriters made in 1984 which are still operational.

The Canon toner cassette system is foolproof, and refills are widely
available.

Brother is second in my book on the score of consumables, mainly
because the OPC drum is a separate component.

But, a positive for Brother is its extended range cassettes.

Both of my production lasers are Brothers which use the 550/580 toner
cassette, refurbs of which are widely available for as little as $19.99.

My LaserWriters remain available for the few times when I need
absolute PostScript compatibility.

Well if you can't access the hard drive through firewire from another mac,
then I think it is the hard drive cable. I have the exact same laptop and I

I've done this, using T at startup, but I can't access the HD on this

Do you good folks think changing the cable for the hard drive would get

I had a tibook 2002 for about a week before I returned it with a bad mother
board. When you say it doesn't give a beep are you talking about the apple
chime? Does it even get power? These laptops were very inconsistent. Some of
them will overheat and melt as shown in the five links.

I'm not familiar with the TiBook, but they were made in 2001 when the

the white iceBooks that use the newer standard plug, so it seems
likely that your 2001 TiBook won't work with your 2002+ adapters?

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-22 Thread Tom

My Epson Stylus Photo R1800 makes beautiful prints from digital photos
or scans. Occasionally a print head will clog and need cleaning, and
that wastes ink, but the prints are so good that I put up with it.
There are six separate ink cartridges so you can use each one up
completely, unlike my R1280 that had to have its entire cartridge
containing all the colors thrown away when just one color ran out. I
learned that when the printer starts warning you that a color is low
(a red light blinks), don't replace it--it still has a lot of life
left. I suppose Epson is hoping you'll replace a cartridge when it's
merely low. When a cartridge is empty, the red light is steady, and
the printer stops.

Another plus: the combination of these archival Epson inks and matte
heavyweight paper is said by Epson to be able to last 200 years if you
keep it out of constant sunlight. I've had color prints hanging on a
wall in a stairwell that do get afternoon sun, and in three years I've
seen no fading in them.

I sell these prints on eBay, (see http://tinyurl.com/5s5r7j ) and
plenty of people have bought them. Take a look at my eBay feedback to
see how much people like these prints. They really are beautiful.

So, if your main use is to print photos or scans, my vote is for the
Epson R1800.
