Burn (freeware) comes with ffmpeg built in, plus other tools. You drop the avi onto it and it does all the transcoding plus the necessaries to produce a basic DVD-Video. He's lucky that he didn't fry the machine by turning it on or keeping it on after the spill. He was right to disassemble it and dry it out. But that doesn't mean it's safe to use as liquid could be hiding under the video chip, causing corrosion and further damage for days. The only thing you can do is to literally soak and wash the board in isopropyl alcohol with as high an alcohol content as you can find, keeping in mind that water is the other liquid in the bottle. Swish the board around to get as much stuff under chips out as you can. Then change the isopropyl and do it again. Then dry it off and put the board in the sun, a warm oven or other safe but moisture-evaporating place. One of those food-warming trays restaurants use would be perfect. Do the same thing for any connectors or wiring that were spilled on. Let everything dry for at least a day if a heat source is used, longer if it's just air-dried at ambient temps. Re: Drink spilled results in blue line on screen
You didn't specify the drink, and if was spilled on the keyboard, or on the screen- I'll assume the liquid made it into the case and onto the board. If you're lucky, it's just the cable or connection that is kinked or loose- it happens in disassembly/assembly. Jim mentioned the worst problem with spills on electronics, if stuff got under a chip, it'll just keep eating away at the metal until everything corrodes. Think of a penny soaking in a soft drink, or exposed metal in a coastal region. I think the previous advice is more likely to solve this issue. So Do I really have to remove the logic board and power supply to change the front panel board? If you do, I'd use the rear port, after all, Firewire can be daisy-chained to 256 devices. If you have any Firewire devices with only a single port place it on the end of the chain. You could get a Firewire Hub if you need more ports. Much easier than disassembling the whole thing. If you chose disassembly, I'd look for loose cables, wires, connections or blown fuses (fuses on circuit boards are often very tiny) since it appears the Firewire bus is otherwise functional. well I finally got a replacement board and was able to replace it without Mickey mousing, how ever it does require some logical skill. The board did not fix the dead port, so I've ordered a cable in hopes it's the culprit. If not are there any suggestions as to the cause. I've run ASD 2.5.8 and it reports all's well. Omnidraw, ConceptDraw (which opens Visio files, iirc), the drawing module of Open Office has a bunch of flowcharting templates, just off the top of my head. Re: Seeing a networked computer's screen ?

I'm wondering if there is a way that I could actually see his screen and thereby direct him what to do, or even better remotely open and close files, and reboot apps on his machine ? The cheapest and easiest way to see each other's screens is to use the screen sharing function built into Skype. The downside is that there is no control of the other computer involved. Then again, that might be an upside. I have used to it watch while someone shows me their problem, and see what they are not telling me, or don't know how to describe. Working in the other direction, I can demonstrate a technique on my computer while they watch me remotely. Either can be a great timesaver when the two parties are having difficulty articulating their position. http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/screensharing/ -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
