Hi Stephen,

Yes and no. It all depends on how the product key system was designed
and weather or not they are hardware specific. Simple name and key
systems, for example, will work on any computer provided the end user
provides the correct user name and product key. Therefore, in a case
like that backing up the correct registration information is the
easiest way to insure the end user has a working product key when they
need to reinstall, buy a new PC, whatever. If it is a hardware based
product key then I would agree the developer needs to be able to
provide new keys when the hardware on the end user's computer changes.

Hi Lori,

While I do agree Liam needs to get his act together about key
replacements and providing better support for his games I disagree
about him giving them away for free. He put the time and work into
creating them so deserves some compensation for that, and as a fellow
developer can understand why he would be reluctant to just give them
away. That said, I don't really understand why he isn't providing
better support for them.

Yes, I know he does have a real daytime job which would drastically
effect how much free time he has to devoting to supporting his
products. Nobody can fault him for that, but I do think he could
probably manage his free time better. I realize it is easy for me to
say this, but I would think he could devote at least a little time to
L-Works support rather than doing something else with his free time be
it watching TV,playing games, or whatever it is he does in his free
time. It makes me question weather he really cares or not. Perhaps,
though, I am being too harsh. I just don't know enough about why he
isn't offering better support to accurately make a fair judgement
about the situation.

Still, even if he himself doesn't have free time he should be able to
find a trusted friend, relative, or appoint a fellow game developer to
redistribute product keys and help manage the business end of things
of L-Works rather than let things hang. Again, easy for me to say, but
it would potentially be an option to offer his customers something
rather than seemingly ignoring them.

Last of all he could always write or higher someone to write some
automated system which would ideally be the best way to handle
support. The automated system would be available 24/7
and only require minimal oversight. That way he would be free to do
whatever he needed to do while having an automated system overseeing
the business end of the business.

The point being here is I know Liam could probably do something, and
for that reason I don't believe just giving his games away for free is
the right answer. However, he does need to do something as it feels
like a lot of people have been left in the lurch by his lack of
attention to L-Works the last few years.

Hi Lori,

That's strange, but what I have learned the hard way is one should
always make backups of their backups. Especially, if it is something
very important.

for example, here in the US a USB flash drive is under $20 in US
dollars so is probably less in pounds. I have a couple of them I keep
in my desk drawer just for extremely important information like
product keys so even if my main backup system gets damaged in some way
I have an alternative source to go get that data. Perhaps you can
consider something similar in the future.

I know this will sound extremely harsh, but in a lot of cases it isn't
the responsibility of the company or individual who sells you a
product to replace your product key if you lose it. Corporations like
Microsoft charge big fees if you lose your product keys therefore it
is in the end user's best interests to find a way to backup that
information in multiple ways to avoid paying for new keys. If you
don't safeguard that information then it will cost you money to get
new keys. We are fortunate that most audio game developers aren't
quite that strict about key replacement policies and perhaps that is
why so many blind customers are extremely lax about their keys, and
just assume if something happens they deserve a free key replacement
even though in the real world that kind of service would be rare.

Re: [Audyssey] What has happened to Liam?

2014-09-01 Thread dark

   Hi Lori.

I don't know what sort of drive you used there, but I can say i've used a
backup external drive for years.

At the moment I have a see gate one. This is a rectangular device. It just
has the one usb and a power lead, (I don't know why you would need two usb's
or a stand). When I bought it I had to slot the part with the connectors for
the usb and power lead onto the main box, but this wasn't a problem and now
it is done I can pretty much forget about it. What I do is stick it in a box
under my bed, then pull it out every three weeks or so to do a full backup
of everything, all my keys, documents, music, audiobooks etc, (not to
mention the setup files for programs).

As an alternative You can now buy what are called passport drives. These are
indeed as you say like a very fat memory stick, they are very small
andportable, but can hold ridiculously large amounts (I bought one recently
for my friend which had a 1 tb capacity).

The difference however is that for a passport drive with no power lead you
will be paying twice the price as you would for a standard external drive
that needs plugging in. For example for 100 quid I could buy a 5 tb external
drive with a plug, or a 2 Tb passport drive without.

You also don't have to use E bay either, indeed I probably wouldn't get
something like that from E bay myself sinse as you said your not sure of
what your getting.

Maplins are a reasonably good national chain and unlike pc world won't try
to foist things on you, also the one near my parents are good for general
advice as well.

Hth.

All the best,

Dark.

has the one usb and a power lead, (I don't know why you would need two usb's
or a stand).

Dark.

[Audyssey] a thanks for the recent code support

2014-09-01 Thread john
I'd just like to thank the folks who replied to my last code questions on the call stack. Because of you guys, I've turned what may well have been a show-stopper into a half an hour fix which has actually simplified a fair bit of the program in the
process. I've also learned a good deal more about the stack itself, which is great in its own right. So once again, thanks for the help.

[Audyssey] looking for mysteries of the ancients beta (preferably 18)

2014-09-01 Thread john

Hi all,
As the subject says, I'm looking to get a copy of mysteries of the ancients, preferably beta 18 if anybody has it. Its been a while since I've played, and I've been having hard drive troubles, so if anyone with a copy could get in touch with me
I'd really appreciate it.

I fully understand that the reason MOTA betas have not been distributed officially is because of bugs and a desire to avoid pointless emails. I hear by declare that, should I receive any beta version(s), I will send no such emails. If you have a
version and are willing to upload it, please contact me off-list, as posting download links here may end up creating said emails.

Thanks,
John

Hi Thomas, the old drive I had was actually similar to a phone or ipod in

trouble than it was worth, it sat on a small base, like a docking station,
and had 2 usb cables plugged into it, and the other ends went into my

Hi Lori,
Is it just Ebay you don't trust, or is it ordering things online in general?
Even if you wouldn't want to use a site like Amazon, you could still
have a look around on there at flash drives. Compare the descriptions,
and see which one sounds the best to you. Then you could probably go
to a local computer store or something like Best Buy to compare
prices.
I'm from the US, so I honestly don't know what the equivalent for
places like Best buy or Radio Shack is over there, so sorry if that
advice isn't helpful. I'd still be willing to bet that flash drives
are as easily available there as they are here, though. And it really
is true that the prices have dropped quite a bit over the past few
years. Even smaller-capacity external hard drives aren't as expensive
as they used to be.
Either way, that won't help much with replacing your keys for Super
Liam and Judgment Day, unfortunately, since those are hardware-based.
But I agree that it's good to keep backups of all your keys and
important data, so it can't hurt to have a cheap flash drive or two
laying around.

[Audyssey] new beta: grave of redemption

2014-09-01 Thread john
I just want to mention this new beta by game madness interactive on list, as
its mostly being discussed on the audiogames.net forum.

Its currently somewhat similar to entombed in gameplay, and is in the early
beta stages (yes, this means crashes!), but its got a lot of potential, and at
the very least is a distracting few minutes here and there.

I've played it several times now, and only had one crash that wasn't explicitly
mentioned in the game's manual, which I've never managed to duplicate.

Well worth a look.

Hi Thomas, the old drive I had was actually similar to a phone or ipod in
that it was a square device, but thinking about it now, it was more
trouble than it was worth, it sat on a small base, like a docking station,
and had 2 usb cables plugged into it, and the other ends went into my
computer. What I'd really like, is one that's more like a tiny memory
stick, where you just take the cap off the end and slide it in to a single
usb port, but I don't know which make is the best, or where would have
them in the uk. I struggle to trust sites like ebay and buying products
which are used. I also have a really ancient perkins brailer, but the
keys are jammed lol. The only other way I can think of to back up my
keys, is to have a sighted person write them down for me.

I saw it told me to do something with my TTS before starting so I wasn't

I just want to mention this new beta by game madness interactive on list, as
its mostly being discussed on the audiogames.net forum.

Its currently somewhat similar to entombed in gameplay, and is in the early
beta stages (yes, this means crashes!), but its got a lot of potential, and
at the very least is a distracting few minutes here and there.

I've played it several times now, and only had one crash that wasn't
explicitly mentioned in the game's manual, which I've never managed to
duplicate.

Well worth a look.

2014-09-01 Thread Stephen
I was refering to Liam's system, speciffically, which I think if
memory serves me correctly, is hardware based.

At 03:35 PM 9/1/2014, you wrote:

Hi Stephen,

If you have it, try using nvda instead, or closing jaws completely before
you start the game.
The reason you're having this issue is because jaws runs low-level code to
take over your keyboard, and this code is preventing the game from seeing
your arrow keys.

Glad to here it. I've spoken with the dev, and it looks like the ability to
reset the screen reader that's being used from within the game will be added
soon. This should make things easier if you accidentally leave jfw running
when the game starts; you can just reset the reader and it'll fix the

If you put jaws to sleep the keyboard unlocks and is useable. Also
you can alt + tab to any other window and still have jaws usage
without slowing down the computer.
You do this by opening up your game and then do a insert + 6, the six
key above the letters. That will open up settings for that program if
no settings then hit ok and they are made to be modified. Now just
tab 2 times and then go to miscellaneous, right arrow and there is
your sleep check box, just hit space bar and then apply and ok. Now
your game should play without problems. See it puts jaws to sleep
when the game is played, and lets you have jaws for the rest of your
computer without problem.

Re: [Audyssey] What has happened to Liam?

2014-09-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,

What you call a memory stick are commonly called flash drives here in
the US. Basically, it is just a long skinny plastic device with a cap
on it you can take of and slide it into your USB port. To be honest I
haven't paid too much attention to brands and just buy them based on
price and the amount of memory available on them.

There is another option available you might want to think about. You
can buy a USB card reader which costs about $15, and you can put any
size flash card in it which is nice. Of course you have to be careful
with flash cards, but you can have several of them for a decent price
and they are small enough to store in a desk drawer or in a container
on your computer desk.

Either way backup devices aren't that expensive. I don't know much
about the UK to tell you where to get them, but I'm sure there has to
be somewhere to get them for a fair price without going to Amazon, New
Egg, or another online vender.

I'd really like, is one that's more like a tiny memory stick, where you just

take the cap off the end and slide it in to a single usb port, but I don't
know which make is the best, or where would have them in the uk. I struggle

to trust sites like ebay and buying products which are used. I also have a

really ancient perkins brailer, but the keys are jammed lol. The only other

way I can think of to back up my keys, is to have a sighted person write
 them down for me.

Glad to here it. I've spoken with the dev, and it looks like the ability to
reset the screen reader that's being used from within the game will be added

soon. This should make things easier if you accidentally leave jfw running
when the game starts; you can just reset the reader and it'll fix the
issues.

If you have it, try using nvda instead, or closing jaws completely before
you start the game.
The reason you're having this issue is because jaws runs low-level code to
take over your keyboard, and this code is preventing the game from seeing
your arrow keys.

Hi Lori,

Yes. A 404 error means that the requested page is missing or can't be
found. So simply put the link to the order page is broken because the
requested page is unavailable for some reason.

As far as external drives goes I have had a lot of success with Sea
Gate drives. I have never tried Sony's drives, and don't have en
experience with them to form an opinion about them. All I do know is
that generally speaking buying an external drive shouldn't cause any
accessibility issues given that they should just show up in Windows
Explorer or File Explorer as just any other drive.

As far as your issue with sighted people not understanding
accessibility I get that a lot, too. Fortunately, I don't have to
deal with them much since I generally know what I am doing, and don't
have to try and explain it to sighted people since I just do it
myself. It sounds like you could use a general VI users list where you
can ask technical questions and get more accessible help than you are
getting at home.

wasn't accessible, but trying to spell it out to someone who is sighted and

think they know it all is like pulling teeth in this case. oh it'll be
fine, and if not, ask for sighted help grrr!

Anyway, I decided on copying my product ids for my l-works games and sending

them to Liam to see if that made life any easier for him, the id for Super
Liam is now on my clipboard, but on being taken to the order page, i get a
404 file not found message, which I think means the link is somehow broken.

Do you know what 404 means?

I'll try anyway to post the id and see if I can awaken Liam from his

Re: [Audyssey] What has happened to Liam?

2014-09-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

You definitely show your age when you mention slate and stylus. In my
experience most younger blind people don't even know how to use one
let alone use it. With the growth of technology I only see braille
solutions like a slate and stylus becoming even less relevant to blind
users.

For example, in the 90's and early 2000's something like the slate and
stylus became obsolete when the VI market was flooded with note takers
like the Braille N' Speak, Type N' Speak, Braille Light, Braille Plus,
Pac Mate, etc. Now days a blind person is more likely to grab their
iPhone or iPad to jot down a quick note than anything else. There is
definitely a good reason for that.

When I first started losing my vision my VI teacher tried to teach me
how to use a slate and stylus along with using a brailler. Quite
frankly I never got the hang of the slate and stylus and even though I
could use it I found it painfully slow and tedious. So by the time I
went to junior high I got my parents to buy me a Braille N' Speak and
I put my slate and stylus in a drawer and pretty much forgot about it.
Most of my peers did the same.

On 9/1/14, Charles Rivard wee1s...@fidnet.com wrote:

Hi John,

Is there any specific reason why you want beta 18? There are several
newer betas than that with bug fixes, and updates available. So I am
curious as to why beta 18 specifically?

In any case I just checked my backups and the only beta I have on hand
is beta 22. I deleted all the older betas and just kept the newest
public beta for myself. If you want beta 22 I suppose I can put that
back on site for a while until I roll out the newest beta. If it
absolutely has to be beta 18 I'd have to build it from source and roll
out an installer for it which would take time.

Cheers!

Hi Bryan,

I do see the problem, but usually as long as the game is installed on
the same PC backing up the old keys will work provided it is the same
PC. If reinstalling on the same PC and the keys don't work then the
key is not hardware based and uses something else to unlock the
product.

2014-09-01 Thread john
Any beta would be great. The reason I wanted 18 specifically was because its
the one I personally enjoyed playing most; I found it quite a bit of fun to
come up with challenges for myself revolving around jumping various
obstacles without ever actually letting go of the keys. Plus, the full
restores from the shield/armor were awesome, heh.
There's absolutely no need to do an installer; I'd be perfectly happy with
whatever you can throw together. I'm certainly not looking for production
quality here, just some way I can get to play with an old distraction that's
vanished into the abyss of hard drive errors.

Cheers!

Hi Charles,

that is true. Of course, keep in mind at the time I told people not to
share the Mysteries of the Ancients betas I was expecting to release
an updated beta within six months and had no idea that development
would drag on for years.

My primary motivation at the time was to keep users, possibly new
users, from pestering me with bug reports, feature requests, etc that
had nothing to do with the new beta I was working on and was intending
to release. However, as I know the project has slowed to a halt I can
probably locate a copy of beta 22 and at least put it back up on site
for the end users' enjoyment until I can roll something else out.

Hi John,

Well, since many people have requested that I put the betas back up if
I am going to do it I might as well do it for everyone rather than one
person. that means a production release and not just zip up the
contents of the demo and slap it on the USA Games site. that's also
why I was curious to know why beta 18 verses a newer release.

I have not played beta 18 any time recently, and only have beta 22
installed on a couple of machines. So that is why I was wondering what
if anything was so different about beta 18 that made it preferable to
the newer releases.

Hi Bryan,

Oh, really? I would have thought beta 22 was more stable than beta 18
since there were quite a number of updates and bug fixes between 18
and 22. I had no idea that beta 18 was considered by end users to be
more stable. If that's the case perhaps I might put that version up
instead of beta 22. Although, people will effectively lose out on any
changes in the later betas.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] RS Games has Released Cards Against Humanity!

2014-09-01 Thread Michael Forzano
Hi All,

I'm excited to announce that RS Games has released Cards Against
Humanity! For those who don't know, Cards Against Humanity is
basically an adult version of Apples to Apples with R-rated cards. For
that reason, you must be at least 18 years old to play this game. This
game has become pretty popular over the last few years and we're glad
to be able to add it to RS Games. You can read more about the game in
the documentation at http://zanosoft.net/zgp/doc/cah.html or check it
out from within the RS Games Client.
Enjoy!

Hi Charles,

that is true.

So did I tom, a fuzzing hard drive I had died, I recovered to another drive.
That drive went boom.
After that I was able to get most data back from the broken first
drive, and then I was able to get another drive.
I got a second drive and now back the working external to the backup
drive all the time as well as other stuff, though to be honest the
backup drive is only used for the backup.
When this drive dies I will use the backup drive as the primary drive
and then buy another drive to use as backup.

Hopefully this means that at any time I only need to replace one drive.
Still its a hard lesson.
A lot of people at least those a friend that did admin and website
and system servicing found that a lot of people did not kep adaquit backups.

2014-09-01 Thread Charles Rivard
With the labeler, all you have to do is to line the desired character up
with a notch just in front of the wheel and squeeze the trigger. When you
release the trigger, the tape advances into position to emboss the next
character. Turn the wheel until the next desired character is lined up with
the notch and repeat the procedure. If the cutter on the labeler doesn't
cut well, use a pair of scissors. They are very easy to use.

I would beg to differ on that. I'm not terribly fast with a slate, but
with the labeler, you have to make sure each letter is centered just
right, then press down on the trigger part. Then you have to hope that
the label cuts properly, because sometimes they don't. Either that, or
I've just had to use really crappy labelers.
In my experience, the process is just as cumbersome as using a slate.

I taught myself to use one, and they are far more useful to a blind person
than having someone else write and read info back to you. The method is
very slow, but you can use it without sighted assistance, which means
independence. Brailling product keys onto Dymo tape, which will not wear
out very easily, can be done with a slate and stylus, a brailler, or a
machine made specifically for embossing onto Dymo tape.

Lastly, I wonder how many people caught the reference in the subject line.

keys kept breaking and had to be tied together with paperclips.
If I restarted school today I'd have an electronic braille note or
simular and I think they are pushing macs in a big way now.

Hi Shaun,

Unfortunately, you are right. Most people don't keep adequate backups
of their stuff. Not even me. What a lot of people fail to realize is
they often times need to keep backups of their backups just in case
their primary backup system gets damaged or destroyed. Its happened to
me, and I am sure has happened to plenty of others as well.

Cheers!

So did I tom, a fuzzing hard drive I had died, I recovered to another

 That drive went boom.
After that I was able to get most data back from the broken first
drive, and then I was able to get another drive.
I got a second drive and now back the working external to the backup
drive all the time as well as other stuff, though to be honest the
backup drive is only used for the backup.
When this drive dies I will use the backup drive as the primary drive
and then buy another drive to use as backup.
Hopefully this means that at any time I only need to replace one drive.
 Still its a hard lesson.
A lot of people at least those a friend that did admin and website
and system servicing found that a lot of people did not kep adaquit
 backups.

Hi Shaun,

Good grief! You sound like an absolute klutz. While I have broken a
couple of Braille N' speaks in my time mostly because I was being
careless I can't say I smashed them into things, fell down the stairs
with one, or had any issues with the keys. For the most part I did my
best to take care of the notetakers I had, because they were expensive
and I had to absolutely keep mine in working order.

However, I think we are drifting way off topic. So ask that we steer
things back to the topic at hand or close it.

Cheers!

Well I did get a couple but really never got into those that much.
I had a perkins and a older lavinder braille unit to start off with.
Sadly I was in the age before electronic braille came mainstream I

I did use a braille to standard print unit for a time and did begin
to start with electronic braille but for whatever reason it never
 happened right.
After I graduated to a querty board except for math there seemed
little reason to read braille let alone write it, the books were to
heavy, and I always dropped the unit, fell down the stairs with it or
