2007-11-09 Thread fastfinge
Hi,

Infocom still holds the copyright to this game, and as far as I am
aware, it was never released as freeware by the company (unlike the zork
games). I believe piracy and/or warez is against list policy. Your
best bet is to track down a copy of _legends of infocom_; afaik the game
is included on that collection. Try ebay, as it's long out of print.

If you've got the latest working version of Klango, you can either just
start haunted factory from the mithril games shortcut in the programs menue,
or start Klango, go to choose the game and open it that way.

As for getting hold of Haunted factory, if I remember rightly, once you buy

Re: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the explanations. I don't drink, but I don't really have
steddy hands either. My hands jitter and shake some when holding the
mouse. I've had that problem for quite some time, and it is fine for
typing etc but gets in the way for things requiring fine motor skills.
Perhaps considering this the mouse isn't my thing.
As for pulling back every time I push the mouse left or right this
happens. Probably an involuntary pull back reaction as I move
left/right. It would be nice if that could be disabled somehow, but I am
sure Che wouldn't want to add this for one person.
Anyway, thanks for answering my questions. Now that I realize it
requires some degree of fine motor skill I am less certain I will
achieve Rail Racer proficiency using the mouse as my input device.
Perhaps a racing wheel or keyboard is more to my needs.

Re: [Audyssey] an new feature in rail racer

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mark,
I think going by nation is extremely unbalanced. I have seen USA,
Canada, South Africa, England etc on the on line play, and I don't show
they could be formed into teams. It might be better to create three or
four teams and mix the different nationalities and skills into those teams.
Dividing skills could be troublesome. There are some racers on there who
are championship quality while others, like myself, are not that good yet.
So to be fair the championship racers would have to compete against
each other while those with beginner to intermediate skills would
compete with each other.

Mark Pemberton wrote:
Hi Claudio, sounds like a great idea but I wouldn't want to be the

a flurry of new ones coming through. We had a chat about having teams of
racers, which I think is really exciting but again how do you choose the
teams? By country is the obvious but if you study the regulars its very
unbalanced, geographically speaking. I suppose we could have 3 main teams
for example:- Europe, USA and the rest of the world. I'm not poo pooing the
idea, I think its great but very complex...What do all you rail racers
around the world think? Is it doable?

Re: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Che,
I think you are right a practice track is advisable. Perhaps I should
experiment to find out what controller is right for me. As i pointed out
to Mark earlier my hands/wrists do shake some when using the mouse and
part of my lack of control could be just do to my nerve damage.
How well do joysticks and game pads work with RR? I usually don't have
as much an issue controlling them. I will locate my game pad and try it
out. See if it helps.

Che wrote:
I think the best thing to do is to make a simple track with just a couple
curves in it so you can practice taking curves, and pressing the D key in
the middle to see how close you are to the perfect lean.
It is also very important to move smoothly with your hand from 0 degrees
to max lean and back again, as the curve itself is a linear progression from
zero to max and back to zero. In fact, it helps to start moving a bit
before the curve, so you are already leaning when the curve starts, and you
won't have to accelerate your hand. One mistake some people make is to over
compensate when they scratch by leaning to far back, remember that wall you
just hit leans with the curve, so if you scrape in the first half of the
curve, it only takes a very slight adjustment to correct yourself.
Finally, it is very important to have a light touch with the mouse, you
should not be moving your arm much if at all, it is all in the wrist and
fingers, and get used to resetting your mouse position by picking it up with
your fingers and placing it back in the center position.
Keep practicing, I promise the mouse is not only a better control device ,
it is in my opinion more fun once you get used to it.
Regarding the accidental slow downs, this is easy to do in a curve,
because it is easy to pull the mouse back as you move it left or right, I
tend to push it forward a bit in the curves, so I don't accidentally slow
 down.
   HTH.

 Hi everyone,
Recently I have switched over to using the mouse with Rail Racer.
However, despite being told over and over again the mouse control is the
best way to drive the racer I feel like I can't maintain control of the
racer very well. I either lean to far to the left or right, sometimes
when using the mouse I'll bump the mouse the wrong way and I will go
from 200 MPH to 50 MPH in a second which drives me insane, and I will
get frustrated and press the left mous button instead of the middle one
resulting in a head on crash into the jump.
I have read and listened to Che's tips on using the mouse and try to
follow them but I am clumsy and out of control with it. I can't seam to
make the mouse do what I want, and my performence is terrible to what I
can do with the keyboard. Last night I got so frustrated I nearly
destroyed my mouse by driving it into my mouse pad like a missile. Any
 help please.

 Sincerely,
 Frustrated Racer

Re: [Audyssey] an new feature in rail racer

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Claudio,
Hmmm... That would be certainly interesting, but Rail Racer seams more
like a stunt driving game than a Nascar or Formula 1 type racing game.
If Che were ever to put in a season mode he would have to add more Art
racers, asign points based on race position for each racer, cash
earnings would have to be calculated based on race position, etc...
Actually, if you wanted to use notepad and Windows calculator you could
create a season type feel to the game. Just use something like the
official Nascar points system. The only difference is that standings and
stats would be manually tabulated rather than automatic.

Hi Tyler,

Quote
What kinds of upgrades/kustomization would be available?
End quote

I honestly don't know at this point. Games have a way of their own of
evolving as they are developed. Changes, new features, etc get
introduced the longer it is in development. Often times the game changes
in development and there are features, changes, etc that weren't even
thought of when the programmer first began coding the thing.
Look at Monty for an example. There have been some major changes in
direction since the development began, and it continues to grow and
evolve the longer it is in development.

Re: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
You are thinking a little to complicated. Smile
I only have a $10 optical PS2 mouse made by HP. I personally would not
buy those $30 Genius mice because they come pre packaged with software,
drivers, etc which is total over kill. So my mouse is pretty generic all
things considered.

PS

My copy of RR is registered to my Windows XP desktop. I don't do allot
of gaming on Vista yet though I have some on my laptop for take along fun.

shaun everiss wrote:

depends what you are use to and if you can handle the mouse.
I myself actually had to purchace a mouse for the purpose of playing
 railracer.
The mouse I have is a 30 buck genius mouse.
It fits the shape of my hand and maybe you will want to get one that will do
 that to.
The second part is trial and error.
Once you have your mouse drivers loaded, if you have something like startup
manager try to disable the extra features apps that come with the mouse.
if the mouse works with them off then you are best to leave all the extras
off because they are not needed.
And unless you need buttons a plenty use a 3 button mouse with a scrole wheel
 or maybe normal buttons.
I have my travel mouse running with a driver from the microsoft site meaning
I don't have to use the genius multimedia feature driver.
granted this means I only have a standard mouse but thats what you want.
If the mouse drivers do not work with the extra feature things removed then
 you may have an issue.
the thing is you don't want to accidently change something as i never was
able to get much accessibility out of the driver configuration thing.

Hi Nicol,
You can take the parchment out of the empty office on standard and hard
levels that way.
On easy level, the Caretaker stays in his office.
But there are several other ways to get the item.

You can use the apparate spell near the office.
Or you can get on your broom and open the office door and fly over the
Caretaker.

 Hi Folks,
That is the question several people have been asking me.
After testing the Sarah game, I am still running into bugs and making
 slight
 changes.
Just this morning I added a door open and close sound to each level when
 the
 Caretaker arrives.
Now, he comes through the same door as you when entering the floor.
Before he would pop up at a random location near the door but with no door
 sound.
This makes it sound more realistic.
I also changed his actions on the ground floor.
In the new patch the caretaker will stay in his room for 10 minutes on
standard and 5 minutes on hard difficulty and then leave and stay out of
 his
office for the rest of the time.
I do not know why I wanted him to return to his office every 2 minutes as
 he
 does in the current version.
I hope to be done soon but I have been saying that for a month now.

2007-11-09 Thread nicol
The subject line does make sense, It just came through as one word.
It sometimes happens when I write a long subject line, then it also comes
through as one word although I didn't write it as one word..
At work, when I now and then send the help needed list a male, I need to
warn them of the disclaimer part my workplace adds automatically, so my
subject line is:
Press control+down arrow to skip the disclaimer part.
Then it comes through as :
Pleasepresscontroldownarrowtoskipthedisclaimerpart
Same case here.

[Audyssey] dementors in sarah

Sorry folks, I asked too many questions in one post.,
I will take it one at a time.
I was merely trying out the ground floor level on hard just to see how the
dementors will act.
I thought the dementors would move and attack sarah but to my greatest
surprise, when I entered the basement, the dementor just stood in one
place.
As far as I understand the harry potter books, only the boggart stays in one
place, real dementors move and attack.
I can't recollect reading anywhere in the books that a dementor just stood
in one place in the basement.
I also noticed that the ridiculous spell worked on the dementor in the
basement on hard level, its not suppose to happen, is it? The ridiculous
spell should only work on the boggart, the real dementor can only be
defeated with a patronous charm, am I right?

[Audyssey] pain versus horror. sarah and sod

2007-11-09 Thread nicol
Long ago I told phil that I don't like a character screaming, like the man
in shades of doom.
I asked phil if sarah also screams in the game, phil then said that sarah
does scream but not of pain, but of horror.
Now today I have become used to the screaming in games, I just want to
discuss the topic of pain versus horror.
In sod when the character gets attacked, what he feels/experiences is pain.
When sarah is attacked by any creature she does not experience pain but
horror.
So when sarah looses all her magical energy it then means that the castle
has become a horrible place, she can't stand it any longer.
The more magical energy sarah looses, the more horror she experiences.
The more health sod's character looses, the more pain he experiences.
So the scar on harry's forehead wasn't real physical pain, its horror.
It was just a mark on his forehead that made him experience horror.
Well the book repeatedly says how harry's scar burns and prickles, but if
phil says that sarah doesn't scream of pain but of horror, it then means
that harry also never didn't experience pain, only horror.
So when the troll or dragon attacks sarah, she also experiences horror, not
pain, right? When panama joe gets bitten by a snake or spider, he
experiences pain, but anything in the sarah game that attacks sarah, it
doesn't cause pain but horror, right?

Re: [Audyssey] pain versus horror. sarah and sod

2007-11-09 Thread Charles Rivard
If you have read the books, you know that Harry certainly did suffer pain.
There were many times when it was mentioned that it felt like his head would
be split in two, or that he was blinded by the intense pain, or that it felt
like his bones were on fire, or that it felt like a white hot wire was being
used. This is certainly not horror. This! is! pain!! Sarah doesn't
experience horror in most cases. It is fright, or maybe being startled.

Re: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

2007-11-09 Thread Tom Randall
Heya Thomas and all.

Although I really enjoy the ability to use the mouse with rail racer and
consider it to be a really unique input device for us, I too get
frustrated especially using my wireless optical mouse which seems to be
really touchy no matter what I set the speed to either via control panel
or rail racer itself. I actually have better luck using one of the old
style mechanical mice down where I work. So what I am saying is that I
feel the actual mouse that you are using may have a bit to do with how
well you do with it especially until you get the hang of using it
something that I still do not claim to have done. So you may want to
experiment a bit with different mice and see if that helps you at all.

One thing that I have had really good luck with is this little usb
trackball that somebody gave me because he was going to get rid of it.
I find I have much more control with this than with the standard mouse.
So if you have one of these or can get hold of one you might want to
give it a try.

As I say I do really enjoy the ability to use the mouse or the trackball
for this game and I agree with Che it definitely gives you more of a
feel of controlling the racer rather than just pressing buttons like we
do with so many other accessible games.

Best of luck.

Tom

Subject: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

Hi,

it puts in your

I hope this explains it.

Re: [Audyssey] an new feature in rail racer

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
As I said earlier. The game does not come with the feature, but if you
use Windows notepad and manually keep track of the points yourself you
could do it.
If you don't know how Nascar races are scored here is a simple table to
use for Rail Racer.

5 points for any racer who led at least one lap.
5 points for the racer who led the most laps.
180 points for the winner of the race.
170 points for the second place winner in the race.

So a perfect race is one where you get a total of 190 points. That means
you led one or more laps, led the most laps, and won the race.
After 26 games all of the scores for the 26 games are added up and the
won with the most points won the season.

As far as I understand the harry potter books, only the boggart stays in one

I can't recollect reading anywhere in the books that a dementor just stood

I myself actually had to purchace a mouse for the purpose of playing
 railracer.
The mouse I have is a 30 buck genius mouse.
It fits the shape of my hand and maybe you will want to get one that will do
 that to.
The second part is trial and error.
Once you have your mouse drivers loaded, if you have something like startup
manager try to disable the extra features apps that come with the mouse.
if the mouse works with them off then you are best to leave all the extras
off because they are not needed.
And unless you need buttons a plenty use a 3 button mouse with a scrole
 wheel or maybe normal buttons.

Re: [Audyssey] pain versus horror. sarah and sod

2007-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Nicol,
There is a big difference between physical pain and horror. The
character in Shades of Doom is in physical pain because he was either
shot, bitten, punched, bla. In Sarah's case if she is touched by a gost
it is doubtful the ghost causes real pain, but she screams in horror and
disgust. I'm not sure about the Trolls and Dragons and Sarah, but most
things don't actually hurt Sarah. Just scare her.
As for Harry's case I would suspect it is a case of both. The books
definitly state that the scar on his forehead is painful. However, he
gets to see Voltimort killing people etc which would have n element of
horror to it. So he is probably experiencing pain and horror both.

nicol wrote:

Nascars don't start races at a stand still.

There are 2 rows of cars slowing moving and its up to the Flag man to toss
the flag of green if all cars at least running properly inle.
Usually the first few rolls of cars that come out of turn four will see the
flagman go green.

This does bring up a point. certain points on the brack are lights for
condition of race and your crew chief should tell you what you need to do.
Like go high to get around a wreck.

 Hi Reinhard,
Probably, if I locate the right kind of rev engine noises that matches
the engine soundsI have. Though, you probably won't have much time to
sit and rev the engine because as of the latest build the start beeps
start and the green flag falls pretty quick. When that green flag falls
you better already be in gear and pressing down on the gas to gain speed
if you are going to take the lead.

 Hi everyone,
I have just posted an all new Raceway trailer. New in this trailer is an
improved car engine with more mustle and speed sound to it, engine
accelleration as it builds speed, and I dropped in a racing song from an
80's rock band, Vixon, called Rev It Up. I also show off such things as
speed announcements, fuel announcements, lap announcements, lap time,
etc so you can here that as well. I have disabled the other AI cars on
the track so you can focus on the car I am driving. Basically, there is
nothing fancier in this trailer right now than me driving around the
demo track, but it is a nice demo of what is to come. Without further
 ramble here is ther trailer.

Let me know your thoughts of this trailer vs the last one.
 Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] raceway -

2007-11-09 Thread Gary Whittington
Very good Tom.

The description of the Car classes sound good.
Besides the Drivers stats and ratings the picking of a type of car sounds
like your looking to keeping the game open for expaneding. Nice, having a
track editing is not a great thing to have in Raceway, but the possible to
have different ERAs of racing or the open module willto include Track racing
Midgets as add ons.

Just like Top Speed where Cars are being created Raceway will have others
recreating past NASCAR season or other circuits.
By able to input some sstats as I mentioned in early emails month or so
ago..
To be able to edit racers vitals and stats is a plus for those who want to
tinker with the Racers data.

IN Summary able to get to driver's data and able to improt and export other
features to a database would be cool.
Even able to change a driver's anme to Tom Ward or Billy Bob, whatever.

As you mentioned once start a season you are not to change ting.. Keeping
the data as it is through the seson will make the database feature of the
game more separte from the game to add later new features and be able to
upgrade with ease for the programming and users end.

It sounds like you got the structure of the game laydown in your mind.
Time to flowchart it now. Smilews.

think it would make the replay ability go way up.
 End quote

Actually, one of the features on the to do list for Raceway is the
ability to select a car from a list before the season starts. You will
be able to select from a list like Toyoda, Chevy, Dodge, Ford, etc...
These cars will be based on actual cars Driven by Jeff Gordon, Kyle
 Peddy, and other Nascar drivers.
The reason I am doing it this way is I can use actual performance
records and data from passed Nascar races to fill up the Chevy, Toyoda,
Ford, and Dodge car classes. This is a driving simulation so requires
 reliable data.

 Quote
Oh, and a stun track would be kind of
cool, whereby doing jumps and such would earn points (doing certain
 tricks,
such as airtime, left roll, right roll, front flip etc), and we could do
 it
 multiplayer.
 End quote

Hmmm That is interesting, but doesn't fit well into the Nascar theme
type game I am creating. That is more for a stunt driving game, and
those cars are quite a bit different from Nascars stock cars.
They have different suspension, different aerodynamics, and so on. To
complicated for what I am trying to create here.
If stunt driving is your thing Rail Racer would be more suited to a game
like Rush. It has different jumps, loops, force fields, custom racers,
and in that respect it is allot more like Rush than Raceway will ever be.

 Quote
But I'm just curious, what is this game supposed to simulate? Nascar, you
 say?
 End quote

It is loosely suppose to be based on games like Nascar Thunder 2006.
Obviously, reaching a one on one quality with EA's sports games is hard
since they have teams of highly qualified programmers to put into a
project, lots of capital, great graphics designers, pro audio ssstudios
doing all the effects, and us small timers can't compete. However, I
think I can do a good enough job to make it worth while.

Subject: [Audyssey] New Raceway trailer posted.

Without further
 ramble here is ther trailer.
 http://www.usagames.us/trailers.php
Let me know your thoughts of this trailer vs the last one.
 Cheers.

 Hi Gary,
Yeah, force feedback isn't something a developer can put in a trailer.
At any rate it isn't in the game yet, because I don't have a device to
test against. I will have to break down and buy a driving wheel with
force feedback to test the game with. Obviously, it will be one of the
 later edditions of the game.
As for the wind I am currently testing different wind sounds, but you
will definately hear wind blowing when you drive this thing.

Re: [Audyssey] dementors in sarah

2007-11-09 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi nicol,
Sorry I couldn't answer all your questions but one at a time I can do.
spoiler
space
In side the castle you will find dementors that are really boggarts. But
the boggart not moving is a bug.
At one time I remember that the boggart attacked you right at the door
before you had time to think about what to do.
This made for a very short game!
So I stopped it in place at a random location until a timer told it to
move.
I may have removed the timer.
I will have to tell it to move in the new patch I am still working on.
You are mistaken to say boggarts do not move, they do.
Later in the game when Sarah gets out, she may encounter real dementors.
And against them the Patronis is the only way to stop them.

Sorry folks, I asked too many questions in one post.,
I will take it one at a time.
I was merely trying out the ground floor level on hard just to see how the
 dementors will act.
I thought the dementors would move and attack sarah but to my greatest
surprise, when I entered the basement, the dementor just stood in one
 place.
As far as I understand the harry potter books, only the boggart stays in
 one
place, real dementors move and attack.
