What I meant was, sadly, you can't do anything about it. If the person
playing your game decides that, ok, this is not worth paying for? he/she is
going to find a way to get it for free. Or, I can't pay for this! The I
can't pay for this can be for any reason, but when one can't pay, one won't
pay. It is not up to me, as a developer, to decide that my game is worth
paying for or not. I mean, no matter what I decide, people tend to get what
they want however they want it. Piracy is not right to do, that is the
bottom line, I was just stating some side-facts, you see.
In my country, all the software can be obtained for free. In my cvcountry,
all the music is obtained for free. When you are in such an environment, you
just realize, hey, that producer has put some time on that. Or hey,
Microsoft has designed windows, although it's awful, but it's something only
a little below avrage, and it deserves to be paid. But does anyone pay
around here? If you already don't know the answer, it is, NO.
That is why I never play the games that are not free and keep myself out of
the whole thing. Too much headache.

 Hi,
Well, there are many points of view about intelectual copyrights, but the
fact of the matter is if you pirate software you are hurting the company
in question in one way or another. High quality sound effects, graphics,
and music can get very expensive. A game developer needs money to purchase
these things, and if you pirate the games then that is less money to use
on the next game. That isn't even considering the labor costs involved in
working on a game 10 to 20 hours a week.
Let us look at this in this way. Which would produce more income for me. I
could work at McDonald's for 20 hours a week and get a pay check every two
weeks, or I can work for 20 hours a week for an entire year with no pay
and have some young, upstart, pirates steel all of my work for free.
Now, if those very same pirates were forced to work for a year, and then
were expecting to be paid at the end of that year and were not paid what
would they say? I am pretty certain they would be screaming for some heads
to roll, and want their money the day before yesterday.
The absolute truth is a lot of pirates have no experience in business and
are just kids who have not had real life experience in trying to earn a
living. They have some foolish notion that they deserve everything served
to them on a golden platter without paying for it. Once they grow up a
little they see everyone needs to work to make a living, and steeling is
steeling no matter what intelectual spin you put on it.
I don't know how old you are, but when you say things like, it all
depends on what you think work and effort should cost, shows a lack of
experience in business. A business requires materials, employees, and a
certain percent of proffet. If you don't have enough money to buy all the
materials to create a product you can't make the product, if you have no
money for employees you have no one to produce the products, and if you
have no proffet you can't purchase food, pay the rent, pay the phone bill,
and so on. Those are facts, and not open to intelectual opinions.

 Parham wrote:
Perhaps. And perhaps not. Everyone is working on what their produce, but
I think it all goes back to you choosing, in your mind, how much work and
effort deserves being paid for. People have different opinions on that. I
do not tend to defend my friend, nore crytisize her, but am just stating
facts. I have never played Judgement Day, so I can't say. I have played
Super Liam though, the demo, at least, and it wasn't different from the
many sidescrollers up to that point. Of course the rest are different,
and that's why I choose to take a neutral position in this discussion,
because it's going on a narrow ledge.

Hi Shaun,
Yes, Che's locking system is pretty good. I like it myself. In fact, I
was working on something similar, but now I have the problem Mac and
Linux handle security totally different from Windows. Now, I have to
invent a totally new product ID system that will generally work on
multiple operating systems. Especially, since my new and improved
activation system relied on data recovered from the user's system
registry which Linux and Mac os do not have. Grr.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Well, how much you have to spend on a new key depends on the developer.
BSC has a very fair policy about handling new keys, and key
replacements. So does GMA. Microsoft is one of the companies that screws
you royally for a new product key, and one of the reasons I am beginning
to use more Linux software. I am tired of their draconian policies.
Like a lot of honest people I do not mind paying for software. What I do
mind is paying through the nose to get a new key for it if I get a new
laptop or replace a motherboard in a desktop computer. That is a
rediculous and unfare policy MS has regarding their Windows products.
It is one thing if you have to pay $35 for a new accessible game and
quite another if you have to pay $120 or more for a new key for Windows
Home Basic.

shaun everiss wrote:
thats true all the activations and checks windows has.
ok if you have the net and ok if its the same system but If you have another
system unless you are ditching the system that the product was on you have to
buy another licence, which costs as much as the full product.
I sertainly think this is real unfair for software companies to do this,
And in that case I wouldn't be happy since I had a copy of the software, I
also hate the fact laptops lock keys to the serials, i have dead laptops and
 desktops with xp on them.
These coppies are useless for that reason.

Re: [Audyssey] game cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Technically that is the difference between intelectual copyright rights
and what the actual companies claim their rights are. I don't know if
you have read Microsoft's end user license agreements, but according to
them you do not own the software you pay for.
Specifically, the end user license agreement for Windows is written up
like a rental agreement. You are allowed to borrow and use the software,
for a fee, but you have no right to ownership, modification, sublicense,
or transfer your license under the agreement. Basically, you rent not
own the software in question. This is something that is not understood
by the typical Windows user at large. They think as you do they paid for
it so they own it. If they read their rights under the license they
would know they are renting not buying to own the software on their
computers.
That is totally different from the way the Linux community is setup.
Under their end user license agreements you are allowed to own, modify,
and freely redistribute the software under the terms of the agreement.
Open source software was designed specifically for people who have
addressed their intelectual copyright rights and demand full ownership
for the software they buy and use. That is why you can give Linux away,
sell it, modify it, do whatever you want to it, and no one can complain.

Re: [Audyssey] very important message to liam erven!

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I am surprised in your country why your people haven't just switched to
a free OS alternative like Linux. I mean there are generally all the
same kinds of applications for Linux as there for Windows for a fraction
of the cost. Want a Microsoft Office equal try Open Office, want a
Outlook equal try Evolution, want a better product than Internet
Explorer try Firefox 3, etc. I won't say accessibility is an exact one
to one comparison to Windows, Linux access still needs to improve, but
reasonable access is here. If it comes down to paying $300 for a Jaws
SMA or downloading Orca 2.18 for free I will go Orca.
The nice thing about some of these alternative operating systems like
Linux is that it is affordable for anyone who has a computer. Even poor
countries, that can not afford Windows, can download and run Linux
software for almost no investment up front. If you want commercial
software like Eloquence or Dectalk for Linux you have to pay for that,
but TTS engines like festival and ESpeak are absolutely free.
I have actually tried Orca's French and Spanish language settings with
ESpeak and it has very good foreign language support. I would say it is
prime software for a non-English speaker, but I don't care that much for
the voice itself. I use Dectalk with Orca as I am a big Dectalk fan. Grin

Lol! I don't think it's only Liam's games that are cracked, anyway. Besides,
whatever one does, someone would come and crack the program/game/whatever.
My friend tells me that she cracked the latest game of Liam, because she

I've been checking the list archives and I noticed a thread where liam
complained about people cracking his games.
Well liam, I've noticed something which you might take care of. I'm not
trying to be insulting or rude
I'm just giving a friendly warning.
Well, I don't own monkey business myself but I play it sometimes on a
 friend's pc.
I've noticed while playing the demo of super liam that the sound of the
monkeys dropping cocanuts is exactly the same as sounds in monkey business.
That little musical sound is exactly the same as in level9 in monkey
 business.
When you have to follow the monkey to the teleporter he makes that little
musical sound when you are close to him, when you get far behind him he
makes another sound. On the beach in the super liam demo I recognize that
 same musical sound.
I heard that same sound when listening to raul playing super liam.
The sound as the cocanut is falling together with that little whisseling
sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in the jungle and campsite in
 monkey business.
That dish sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in monkey business
and that whistling sound is the same as in monkey business when a cocanut
 hits you .
Because in monkey business if you walk into a tree more than once then you
 get hurt.
So liam, you want to take care of that. I don't think draconis is going to
be happy if they learn that you are using some of their sounds.
Ok its not a big deal, its 2 little sounds that is the same as in monkey
business, but if you are concerned about copyright issues and cracking, you
should really take care of those sounds by replacing it with original
 sounds.

Let Liam know who your friend is. Piracy! is! illegal! and he should know
about it even if he does nothing, although I hope he does. I'd really
 like

Lol! I don't think it's only Liam's games that are cracked, anyway.
 Besides,
whatever one does, someone would come and crack the program/game/whatever.
My friend tells me that she cracked the latest game of Liam, because she
thought it wouldn't be worth paying for. Since I do not play much of audio
games anyway, I refrain from giving my own personal opinion on the matter.

I've noticed while playing the demo of super liam that the sound of the
monkeys dropping cocanuts is exactly the same as sounds in monkey
 business.
The sound as the cocanut is falling together with that little whisseling
sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in the jungle and campsite
 in
 monkey business.
That dish sound is the same as when you walk into a tree in monkey
 business
and that whistling sound is the same as in monkey business when a cocanut
 hits you .
Because in monkey business if you walk into a tree more than once then
 you
 get hurt.
So liam, you want to take care of that. I don't think draconis is going to
be happy if they learn that you are using some of

Hi,
speaking sighted-wise, it's because there are all these courses for learning
Windows and such, and there are not much people who know how to use linux,
let alone use it. My girlfriend who studied computers in highschool knows
about LS and stuff. They teach them very basic stuff, and on a RedHat
distro, so it's not reliable.
Speaking blind-wise, I myself don't like Orca because of the support it
doesn't provide. I mean it's wonderful and it's going to be great in a year
or two -- but not now. FreeBSD still remains to be tested, though. I've
heard Orca doesn't support Firefox 3 on it!

What I meant was, sadly, you can't do anything about it. If the person
playing your game decides that, ok, this is not worth paying for? he/she

going to find a way to get it for free. Or, I can't pay for this! The I
can't pay for this can be for any reason, but when one can't pay, one
 won't

paying for or not. I mean, no matter what I decide, people tend to get
 what
they want however they want it. Piracy is not right to do, that is the
bottom line, I was just stating some side-facts, you see.
In my country, all the software can be obtained for free. In my

all the music is obtained for free. When you are in such an environment,
 you
just realize, hey, that producer has put some time on that. Or hey,
Microsoft has designed windows, although it's awful, but it's something
 only
a little below avrage, and it deserves to be paid. But does anyone pay
around here? If you already don't know the answer, it is, NO.
That is why I never play the games that are not free and keep myself out
 of
the whole thing. Too much headache.

[Audyssey] Introduction

2008-07-26 Thread John Bannick
Michael,

No. I'm neither blind nor (to be honest) much of a gamer.

Like Thomas, Jim, and the others, I'm a computer programmer who likes to
build games.

I got interested in software accessibility while working at Kurzweil.
We were told that the reading machine at that time contained an audio copy
of Zork. That gave me the idea.

When the opportunity came along for a bunch of us to start our own game
company, I made it a requirement that as many games as possible be as
accessible as possible, including blindness, vision impairment, color
blindness, deafness, motion impairment, and cognitive impairment.

Being Head Geek helps.

So I'm active in the Boston Visually Impaired and Blind Users Group, the
Boston Voice Users Group, the International Game Developers Association -
Game Accessibility special interest group, and some other groups.

The VIBUG group meets at the Braille Press offices in Boston. Check out
their web site at www.vibug.org.

Making software accessible is an interesting challenge and has led me to
meet some really neat people. You'll find a lot of them here at Audyssey.

Mauricio,

The Company name is 7-128 Software.

I understand that part most software will not allow you to crack, decompile
modify, or anything like that.
However its a pitty you can't easily transfer stuff betwene your home systems
when they change.
Ok i can see the other viewpoint however I must say that I understand why the
every day pirate feels justified, heck if I couldn't afford this stuff I'd feel
justified.
Its only because the laptops have their own copy and the fact that ebay exists
that I don't and even then In the past I have been slow to buy expensive
software, lets just say that.
At 12:20 a.m. 27/07/2008, you wrote:
Hi Shaun,
Technically that is the difference between intelectual copyright rights
and what the actual companies claim their rights are.

I am surprised in your country why your people haven't just switched to

Outlook equal try Evolution, want a better product than Internet

to one comparison to Windows, Linux access still needs to improve, but
reasonable access is here.
Grin

Re: [Audyssey] Game Cracking

2008-07-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Parham,
Not true. I have installed Ubuntu Linux 8.04 on my laptop, and Orca
works great with Firefox 3.0. It works a lot better than the 2.x
versions. I don't know where you got the information Orca doesn't work
with Firefox 3, but it isn't true at least with the latest builds of
Orca and Firefox 3.0.
As far as training courses goes you have a point there. Most colleges,
universities, and vocational schools haven't yet added Linux to their
training courses. At least not for the casual or average student. I did
have Linux for my Computer Science degree, but then again that was only
because it was emerging as a leader in server side software at that time.
However, as far as using shell commands like ls, cd, mkdir, etc there
isn't much demand to know that sort of thing since the majority of the
stuff is now graphical just like Windows. Many distributions of Linux
such as Ubuntu have done a lot of work the passed year or two in trying
to make Linux as user friendly as Windows and for the most part it is if
you get the right distribution. Problem is there are some Linux makers
out there that don't care about user friendliness, and they make all the
other companies that are doing it look bad.
Finally, if you want to talk about reliability I would have to say I
have found my Linux systems is far more stable and reliable than
Windows. For one thing all the thousands upon thousands of Windows
based viruses don't mean anything to Linux. Sure there are a handful of
Linux viruses out there, but the actual probability of ever getting one
is several thousand times less likely than getting a Windows based virus
on a Windows computer.
Both the dpkg and rpm package management systems are far more reliable
than Windows Installer based installations. The main reason is that it
will warn you if uninstalling a certain package will cause various
programs to crash, and they have smart installers. For example, if you
run the apt-get tool when installing a program it will see if all
dependancies are met, and if not go to the Ubuntu Linux web site and
grab the missing dependancies for you. Like if you install a game that
requires mono and SDL and they are not installed it will first install
them, or upgrade them to the required version, and then install your
game. This is so much nicer than trying to figure out what version of
Direct X a person has, if they have the .Net Framework, bla.In Linux it
will just do the version check for you, and just do the necessary
updates for you.
As far as recovering from a crash I have not found too many times where
the system crashed so bad I had to totally reboot the computer from
scratch. If Ubuntu Linux does crash, like Orca does lock up, just doing
an alt+control+backspace will kill the current Gnome session, take me
back to the login screen, where I log back in and resume what I was
doing. None of this Explorer has performed an illegal operation and must
be shutdown crap I have to deal with in Vista. If Explorer crashes I
usually have to wind up restarting the entire computer from scratch just
to fix the problem. So reliability is something I respect in Linux.
As for FreeBSD I have used it, but it is not my favorite OS. It is
falling behind Linux somewhat when it comes to accessibility issues. I
am not really all that impressed with FreeBSD's driver support. Their
primary market is server side applications, and wasn't really meant for
home user use like Linux is beginning to target.

 Hi,
speaking sighted-wise, it's because there are all these courses for learning
Windows and such, and there are not much people who know how to use linux,
let alone use it. My girlfriend who studied computers in highschool knows
about LS and stuff. They teach them very basic stuff, and on a RedHat
 distro, so it's not reliable.
Speaking blind-wise, I myself don't like Orca because of the support it
doesn't provide. I mean it's wonderful and it's going to be great in a year
or two -- but not now. FreeBSD still remains to be tested, though. I've
heard Orca doesn't support Firefox 3 on it!

Hi Parham,
Ah, now I do understand a little more why your friends might be into
cracking. Last time I checked there were some U.S. trading laws that
prohibits the selling of certain computer hardware and software to your
country. Not only that, but the U.S. dollar is worth a lot more on the
international exchange rate than the Iranian Rial.
Acorrding to my currency converter it says one of my games is worth
about 35000Rials in Iranian currency. That is a boat load of money just
for a simple game. A new computer pre-loaded with Windows Vista would be
a nightmare with that kind of international exchange rate.

Hi Shaun,
I do understand their logic, but still it doesn't make it right. I can't
afford to buy a brand new car, but I can't just walk to the nearist car
dealership and expect to steel a new car just because I can't pay for
it. Although there is a major price diference between a new car and a
new version of Windows. At some point steeling is steeling no matter how
you want to justify it.
