I think Charles was alluding to the fact that he hadn't exhausted all
the options... because assuming he had a way to play the game since
he's asking about it, he could've played it first before asking.
While I welcome questions, I like questions if, and only if, the
person has exhausted all options to find the desired information. But
I see both sides of the picture...

2010-11-13 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi folks,
Old basic for dos started with gwBasic.exe
You had to type in on the command line,
c:\gwbasic.exe game.bas
to get the game.bas to run.
A newer version was named basica.exe
and then
qbasic.exe which was what Jim's DOS games used.
All the basic programs could produce a executable if compiled with the
correct switches .

I don't remember what they were.

They are written in basic and you will need an interpreter to run them. I
heard of a program called GWBasic a while back, but not sure if it still
exists or is being developed.

After Michael asked about these it got me curious and I downloaded and
tried

them.

I assumed that sinse they said they ran with doss, there would be a file I
could run under the console in windows to play the game, such as an exe,
com

or bat file, but there are none of those around in the folders, just a bas
file which does nothing when I try to open it.

Are these completely un runnable under windows? and if so, any chance of
making them runnable?

I just rather fancy the idea of single player adventure games, - maybe
lewie could fix these the way he did with the great escape, which is
deffinately fun.

Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

2010-11-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Sure its possible. There are plenty of languages we could convert this
to such as Python, Perl, or Ruby which would be a lot more current
and be way more cross-platform to boot.

In fact, I have a number of games written in Apple basic such as
Oregon Trail that I'd love to convert to a more modern programming
language. Python sounds like a good bet since it is simple to code in,
is cross-platform, but then requires that the Python runtime be
installed.

Although, for text adventures I've been thinking of using a scripting
language called Perl. It is C-like, but like Python is an interpreted
language. In a way Perl is like writing in C without all the over head
and complexity attached.

Hi Ian,

Have you tried any of the cross-platform interpreters like frobtads,
scare, frotz, etc?

I mean if I can play dozens of text adventures on Linux surely there
are just as many if not more support for Mac OS. Most of the
interpreters I use are open source and can be cross-compiled on any
Unix-compatible OS.

Hi Dark,
Probably. Though someone would have to want to port the code to a language
that will compile an executable. Interestingly enough, the .bas extension
files are used for standard code modules in VB, though methinks it probably
wouldn't be compilable in that format.

Well, if it takes that sort of trouble, would it be possible to have
them converted to something more playable the way The great escape already
has been?

That would be welcome indeed.

Hi Carl,

example

of an interpreter would be something like basica.

Hi.

Next time you ask about a game, try looking on the website of the
game itself and find as much information as possible before you post
to the list something which might already be answered. Not to be
rude, but it just seems moot to me to ask a question that could be
answered by taking a look on the website where that game comes from.

Best.

Re: [Audyssey] Ten Pin Alley help

2010-11-13 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Gary,
I think Ten Pin Alley 1.2 is designed to work with Vista and Windows 7. But
if you lost your registration key, you are now required to pay full price.

That is the Draconis policy as of last year.
I do not have the old registration keys, except for the Sarah game.
That's the only game that I can look up your key and send it to you if you
lost it.

Phil

Well, back tring to get my copy of TPA to work.

Odd enough, the demo version off the CD is working now.
Before had a runtime error.
The DirectX must be working Ok now for the game in demo mode on my Vista.
computer.

But the thing is its been so long ago I have no record of my user ID
REgister number.

The game runs under the demo, so I need these 2 items.
I have no problem paying for the game again and getting the 1.02 version as
the game I have is 1.0.

So if Phil or anybody can look up my ID and number, so at least I can finaly
put this to rest that be great.

Re: [Audyssey] Changing the greater than symbol in interactive fiction

2010-11-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Personally, I am fine with the greater than symbol, but I see your
point regarding new players. Back when I was learning C++ I wrote a
number of text based games for Linux like Blackjack, Poker, etc and
when it was my turn to play I would print the line
"Enter command:"
to let me know it was my turn to play. I think this would work equally
well here because it is both short and to the point.

Cheers!

Hi.

removing the status line would be handy indeed. as regards a replacement for

the greater than symbol, well as I said I got used to greater than
indicating that I should type something, but I do see your point especially
for starting if players.

Obviously the phrase should be very short, but should indicate what's going
on.

how about "your move?" or "your turn?" as in a chess game. inserting the
question mark will give the right intonation to a synth, and make it an
enquiry, where as given the business with sapi reading punctuation marks
which has already been mentioned, you: might litterally read as "you colon"
which could be a trifle destracting.

Question marks however are not commonly read by sapi, so this would be a
more logical symbol to use.

Obviously, when using usual screen readers like hal, it's possible to set
read punctuation anyway so either wouldn't matter too much, - though
it's also worth noting that most synths will add correct intonation for a
question.

Beware the Grue!
