I strongly protest the idea of Swamp possessing maps with different genre elements. Leave such things to another developer to make, as they could then make it a proper new game. what could be kinda cool, is an area where you have far less zombies, but each one is way faster, and way better at detecting you. so you would go in to the area, perhaps as a mission, and you have to take down perhaps 10 targets. but you will have to be very quiet, slow, and careful, otherwise they will detect you, and unless your very very quick, they will be on you before you can do anything. this would be a good mission for those of us who enjoy the art of sneaking around, and assassinating zombies ... ahaha but, it would be an area that only those who have gotten good at being quiet can take on, as the zombies would be to good at catching you otherwise. not sure if you can change zombie based on a per map basis, but thats one idea i have had. dallas On 1/26/2012 18:00, Kai wrote: I strongly protest the idea of Swamp possessing maps with different genre elements. Just deleted the message by accident. But if an axe fits the game... then why not a bow? I fully respect the shooter genre, but in these games, the more weapons the better... and a lot of shooters mix weapons from different areas. Assassin's Creed, one of the most popular action adventure games, features swords, grenades, guns, and all the rest... while being a renaissance-based game. If swamp were to stick purely to the classic survival shooter formula, the only close range weapon would be a knife, not an axe. I think if an axe is allowed, there should be room for others. Re: [Audyssey] swamp mission and character upgrade
Steady, the difference between those missions is the number of zombies that attack the warehouse. I like the suggestion for the higher guns and also the chainsaw. I will give it some thought and adjust the skills a bit. Hi Jeremy, the mission that lvl 15 can lead and the 1 above lvl 20 both require the players to load 12 items to the truck. What is the actual difference between the two besides one require more rep to join and higher reward? Comments on character upgrade. I don't have enough points to try out but I guess we can't feel much difference with the upgrade for heavy weapons like m60, sniper rifle and mini gun because they are already very powerful without the upgrade and mostly take one or at most 2 shots to kill a zombie. Maybe you can consider replacing the critical strike and more damage power with less chance of being broken and faster reload. I think it might be more helpful. Same for the chainsaw. Since it already has little chance of broken, how about longer range upgrade and higher chance of blocking zombie hits? I did try using it after you did the modification. It does help a bit but I still end up donating. It is very expensive to use. I have to use up lots of fuel doing blank shots and med kits. Although axe is less powerful and i use it without defencive mode, the pay off for killing zombies is the same and doesn't need any ammo so is very much more worth it. 锦发/Steady Goh --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] howlers
There are plenty of axes in the modern world. Hatchets, camp axes, fire axes, wood-splitting mauls and axes, etc. They aren't just a medieval weapon. Having said that I think the axe sound needs to be updated, right now it sounds like you're swinging around a giant battleaxe, when in truth I think it needs to be cut down to a hatchet or camp axe to make things more realistic. Either that or, make it a military issue knife of some kind, there are plenty to choose from. While I don't agree with the cross genre thing, especially not in a game like this, unless it was done as a joke, I do want to suggest a weapon. The wasp knife. It's a large knife, similar to a bowey knife, but when you stab your target, you press a button on the handle and it injects the wound with a huge amount of gas which quickly expands, causing massive internal damage by freezing and displacement. This could fit right along with the proposed assassination idea, sneaking up on a zombie, getting in extremely close, stabbing it for massive damage, then retreating into the shadows to reload your knife. It'd also be the first melee weapon that required ammo in probably any game. And yes, this is a real knife. Huh. I like that idea. That knife would definitely be an interesting addition... and you're right, probably the first time ammo was used for a close-ranged weapon in a game. and I'm not saying that axes don't exist in the modern world, just that it isn't common to find them in fps games, knives and the occasional sword tend to be more common in my 15 or so years of mainstream gaming. But the cross-genre thing is only another map idea. It's like a mod for a shooter... I remember when I used to watch my cousins play counterstrike, which was a multiplayer fps similar to swamp, actually, just with a different theme not zombies, but military. There were plenty of extra maps and mods available, one of my favorites being one that harkened back to an Ancient chinese setting, where you had to defend a Shaolin temple with various weapons like swords, staffs, and even the occasional whip chain and some unarmed martial arts combat. I guess I'm just trying to say that a shooter doesn't have to remain a shooter necessarily, but it can have optional maps and whatnot to give a different feel for whoever wants to download it. Especially since pc games have fan mods and things like what we're suggesting all the time, and most audio games tend to stay stagnant because of the lack of change like updates, expansions, whatever. Swamp is a great shooter and one I enjoy immensely, but can't play right now due to terrible panning issues... but an optional mod like that would be awesome, so when I do get back to playing it, I can have the option of playing with a map with different weapon sets depending on my mood. - Original Message - From: Shadow Dragon elementalult...@hotmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 12:19 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] howlers There are plenty of axes in the modern world. Re: [Audyssey] howlers
Players are free to mod the game as they wish, particularly since future releases will come with the language file that will allow them to modify game text. I would still protest such overt departures from the zombie theme in the original releases of Swamp, however. And yes, we could have 20 weapons in Swamp, but would there be much of a reason after a certain point? We already have more weapons than most games, especially audio, and they cover a wide array of specs and styles while sticking to the modern, militaristic, shooter theme. I just can't see how a bow, a crossbow, a samurai sword, a catapult, halberd, or any multitude of other weapons would fit in... heck, we might as well have magic wands and shout inanely strange phrases whilst waving said wands. One could also argue that if grenades are eventually going to be allowed, why not an rpg? A missile launcher? Cruise missiles? ICBM's? Nukes?... Justification for one thing based on the existence of another could mean that Swamp would end up being the daddy of jack of all trades, where Swamp would be 2 gb just because of the sounds, and even then people would be wanting something else. It's a matter of drawing the line. Originally, the axe was intended to be a knife, but... Do you really see a knife being much of a threat against a zombie? Axes can hack zombies to bits, while a knife would at best inflict a deep stab or slash wound. Even if you sever their throat and such, zombies probably don't need air, so they'd still come ahead. Re: [Audyssey] game speech
Hi Jim. I agree that sapi does have the advantage of being very vercetile for creating and manipulating different sets of text, which is why games like Entombed would be near impossible to do with all human speech. Though even then, I'd stil view this as a necessity of the game architecture myself, rather than as something which is absolutely desireable. What I mean is, my brother has recently with his friends been playing one of the wrestle mania games which has a create a wrestler mode. Apparently, as well as being able to choose from a libary of many thousands of physical features to make up your created wrestler, the ring announcer has a huge range of comments in human speech, so that you can give them, if not the name you actually want, at least something aproximate. For instance, apparently someone created an evil version of Ryu, the martial artist from the street fighter game series as a wrestler. No, the ring announcer didn't have the name Ryu, but did have Dragon, thus he was called evil Dragon. My brother for instance, who's name is mat, created himself as a wrestler under the name Mr. mat. obviously, to have this amount of speech in a game would be an insane amount of work from a voice actor just to create enough to announce wrestler names let alone anything else, and the only reason it's in the wrestlemania game is that the company who make it is a massive coorperation with enough money to throw around on the project. However, if an audio game were made with the same amount of money behind it, I'd personally be willing to bet someone would have the idea to do exactly the same thing with speech, assuming that a voice actor could be paid to do all that recording. As for sound files enspiring games, well that seems to make a lot of sense to me, --- whatever gives you inspiration for something seems fine. Beware the gRue! So those were in just about all of my dos and now Windows games. So for me often it is a sound file that inspires me to create a game. You know such as the You big dumb balding ape that inspired me to create Awesome Homer. I guess that seems backward, but I am often like that. Now one thing that I would never ever do is create a game using my voice. I just do not wish to hear myself talking all day. Probably again backward but I really do prefer the sapi voices to human speech in games. I even turn off the male comments in my casino games. I have just finished a bit of a new game where it totally randomly creates and describes the players that you will play against. So since every sentence is built randomly, I would need thousands and thousands of individual words recorded, and then putting them back together into sentences just does not work because of the different inflections in human speech. And then there is the adjusting the rate of the speech. That also does not work with recorded human speech. I will though try to find some appropriate human sound clips sort of like the ones in my casino games etc. BFN Jim In a country of free speech, why are there phone bills? j...@kitchensinc.net http://www.kitchensinc.net (440) 286-6920 Chardon Ohio USA --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] game speech
Hi Dark, Oh, yeah. I often feel its the lack of funding that keeps audio game developers behind the mainstream. I've got the skills to write something like WWE 12, which came out for the XBox recently, but skills don't mean Jack if I don't have the human voice actors to do the commentary, ring announcements, and prematch cutscenes. Often times it is the real performers themselves so you know they've got to be paying top dollar to get the wrestlers to come in and record all the sounds and so on. I've seen the same thing in the Star Trek games. Star Trek: Elite Force is a good example. While there were plenty of non-cannon characters written into the game all the top stars from Voyager reprized their rolls for the game's cutscenes. I'm sure hiring the actors from Star Trek: Voyager for a game wouldn't exactly come cheap. That is essentially our problem as independent game developers. We don't have the funding to hire big name stars to do voice overs, nor can we hire the top graphics artests to do 3d graphics and full motion video. That doesn't mean we can not make do with hiring someone from voices.com or getting help from fellow list members, but by and large we don't have the money to do nearly half the things a commercial company can do. Re: [Audyssey] game speech
Hi Dark, I think my Ten Pin Alley game is the only one that allows you to pick your name from a list of about 120 recorded names. Of course Josh had to record them. It also had the ability for you to record your own name and add it to the game. It sounded strange but was workable.
Hi Tom. that is all absolutely true, however sometimes I do wonder if there are more creative solutions to those sorts of problems such as those followed by graphical indi developers. As you know, I am a huge fan of the Turrican games, a set of 2D exploration platform shooters originally for the comador Amigar. With the creator's friendly permission, turrican has now very much been taken over by fans and new levels or even games are being produced every few months. turrican has always been famous for it's exceptional soundtrakc, so of course to be propper Turrican games, the fan projects had to have decent music. The designers of the various fan projects therefore located composers, either fellow fans or musicians who work in their spare time to create some exceptional music for the projects. Indeed, here is a collection that I wripped from the games and have zipped up for other Turrican fans to download: http://www.sendspace.com/file/s4kp18 it often seems however that some people working on audio games aren't willing to go outside the community or ask around on sites like www.songplanet.com to see what is available, and a state of affairs where a graphical game has better music than an audio game, and a graphical game produced with just the same low level of resources and in a person's spare time what's more. to take another example and actually make a practical suggestion. Obviously you don't have either the cash or resources to have a ful scale audio commentary in the wrestling game, however that doesn't mean you can't have a small number, say ten or twenty, especially dramatic ring announcer quotes recorded to play at significant moments during the match and add to the atmosphere. So to take your slam example, even if you can't record goodness knows how many ways of saying person x scoop slams person y, you could get a Oooh! and he's down! or she's down! to play at that point, just to bring home to the player that significant damage had been done, with the sapi description filling in the details. Ouch! that's gotta hurt, right off the top!, One in the kisser!, right in the bread baskit etc. The game smash Tv for the Snes did a very similar thing. Even though Snes hardware couldn't cope with many sound clips, sinse the game was themeed around a deadly game show and they wanted an annoying host to give comments, they just recorded a few phrases such as I'd buy that for a dollar or big money! big prizes! I love it! which really did a lot for the atmosphere of the game and introduced the host as a completely irritating person without requiring massive amounts of sound clips. I'd offer to do the short announcer comments myself, accept that you'd really want an American for that sort of thing, and though I could possibly fake an accent it wouldn't obviously be as authentic as if you got a real Us actor from the correct region of the states. That's of course assuming that you can't find actual samples of that sort of thing kicking around on wrestling fan sights somewhere. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] howlers
I will make a specific argument for a bow of some sort, a quiet weapon with a longer range than a pistol. I agree that we shouldn't go adding weapons just because; a weapon should add something to the game. I argue that a bow would add another set of choices for sniping. As for the alternate settings, I think I side with Kai on this one. For one thing, adding in other settings would require a more complex game engine, since a different mix of weapon types would be needed, and you'd need more differentiation between melee types. This is needlessly complicated and thematically unconvincing; I find it highly unlikely that you would have survivors of a modern zombie invasion. Also, as far as reality goes- I know I know, how real can this be eh? but finding a bow/crossbow is about as likely as finding a shotgun- they sell them all in sporting good stores. [Audyssey] Word Burst on Out of Sight
Hi, word game players, Join me this Saturday, January 28, for a 30-minute version of Word Burst during the Out-of-Sight birthday celebration. That game will be at 2:30 PM Eastern, but the festivities begin at 2 P.M.. Then on Sunday is my regular full-length Word Burst, lasting about an hour. The theme will be names of puzzles. Then we will close the evening with about 15 minutes of word puzzles. Speaking of puzzles, here is the brain teaser that Charles gave you last Sunday. Find the name of a nut, edible, of course, not me. Move each letter of the word down the alphabet four spaces, and you will have the name of an animal. Looking forward to seeing you on both Saturday and Sunday, Kathy Mertz --- Shepherds are the best beasts, but Labs are a close second. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. I see plenty of rooms on the channel, for Out of Sight, but no rooms showing for In the Blind spot. Even clicking on Private rooms no rooms Zero. I do plan on using out of sight for demonstrating Jaws scripts for the Strat baseball game and other Sims. But I am interested in seeing if In the Blind Spot is available. Looking also dong PODcast or CrashCourse casts or I like to say CrashCasts. Smiles and a possible web site as a hub to the different channels for the blind and also a link to the mother hen's web site FTP. Don't want to give the possible name up as of yet, don't want it to get away. But see, where the site can also be a place for other links, that b lind web masters can submit links or create their own pages. Where by the site can have POD casts of others as well, from gaming to whatever. If you or anybody else know the status of The Blinde Spot, please let me know with a email at gary...@cableone.net And what is happening on the Strat side of things. The Forbes Field edition of the Jaws scripts for the strat baseball sim is nearly completed. In the game company fiscal cycle, the latest version of the game is coming out and testing on my old Vista computer and new Windows 7 computer. Then there is the baseball game lite version, which I plan on getting too. This lite version, will be able to get the lite version of the Jaws, which I plan to have as free scripts. But for the full version of the Jaws scripts will end up costing a donation. Smiles, that will help in the cost of PODcasting the new site. Huh, and here I thought RaceWay would come out before my powerfull Jaws scripts to the game. Smiles, I put a lot of time and testing, with some inovated script writing for the Strat games, which I am very proud of. The Forbe's field addition, even amazing me with I use them in the game, on what I have built. And I would pay a small donation for the scripts. The league I am in will be dong our HRFL 1954 draft in most likely in Feb. By where I plan on putting the final touches on the master scripts. The playball.ws will go under new constructions. Re: [Audyssey] howlers
Shrug, a big enough knife can have about as much affect as a hatchet. Some knifes, like bowey knives and k-bar knives, the ones with foot long or longer, broad and heavy blades, are made for hacking and chopping rather than stabbing anyway. It just depends on what types you look at. And really, a smaller axe isn't going to do much more than a knife anyway, it'd just create a differently shaped wound, but the blade wouldn't really sink deep enough to do major damage like removing limbs etc, especially not on the larger zombies. Even if you used something like a wood-splitting maul it's just a matter of leverage, you could probably crush the skulls of some of the smaller zombies, but it's probably just going to bounce off a tyrant. The only thing that might have any effect at all would be something like a gigantic medieval style battle axe, something with the huge crescent blades that are meant for chopping off limbs and cleaving people in half, but that just leads us right back to the whole cross-genre thing. Even fire axes aren't really that big, they'd be good for crushing skulls and that's about it. So if it comes down to a matter of realism, no modern melee weapon save maybe the wasp knife is going to do crap against a zombie, and the only way a wasp knife would is if you managed to stab a zombie through the eye and blow it's skull apart, provided the zombies in swamp work the same way as most zombies and are reliant on their skull staying in tact. -- From: Kai wraith...@comcast.net Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 02:34 AM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] howlers Players are free to mod the game as they wish, particularly since future releases will come with the language file that will allow them to modify game text. Swamp is a great shooter and one I enjoy immensely, but can't play right now due to terrible panning issues... but an optional mod like that would be awesome, so when I do get back to playing it, I can
Re: [Audyssey] howlers
Have to disagree on the part about modern melee weapon- being a collector and a swordfighter of sort, I know that getting your hands on a fully functional and high quality sword is not that difficult- provided you know what to look for and where to go. Especially since zombies aren't likely to be clashing steel against you, all you have to worry about is the sharpness and grade of your steel- even a replica longsword, if it's full-tang and at least 440 stainless steel, can probably chop through rotting flesh/bones with ease- while keeping you far enough away from arms reach. Agree about that part where you'd go against a tyrant though, in that case, definitely a gun's prefered. Re: [Audyssey] howlers
I am also a modern collector of weapons. But the thing is most people don't know where to go or what to look for. People always ask me where I get my stuff. Swords, axes, medieval-style knives, just aren't that common these days. Haha though I do have an axe that would be perfect for hacking even larger zombies apart. It's about 3 and a half feet long from the butt of the shaft to the tip of the blades, and the blades span almost 2 and a half feet across. I'd think that could even hack the arm off a tyrant. But really, as you've said, going up against a zombie with a melee weapon is just silly, as is shooting a zombie multiple times and expending a couple clips of amunition on some weapons just to bring down a few zombies when you should be going for strictly head shots. So realism really is not a factor here. -- From: Johnny Tai johnnyti...@shaw.ca Sent: Thursday, January 26, 2012 11:51 AM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] howlers Have to disagree on the part about modern melee weapon- being a collector and a swordfighter of sort, I know that getting your hands on a fully functional and high quality sword is not that difficult- provided you know what to look for and where to go. Re: [Audyssey] howlers
Reusable ammo is a good point. Kai, while I do agree that a line has to be drawn, how would we be straying from the zombie theme by adding more weapons? It's funny Johny mentioned sports stores, because in half the zombie survival shooters and even movies you watch, people are always raiding those things to find goods, whether it's a shotgun, a first-aid kit or a bow. You're not straying from the theme if the enemies stay intact as zombies, and you're trying to survive. This is just a use of all the resources you have. As to knives. Well, I don't know much, but being a weapons-lover myself, I have to disagree about a knife being inaffectual... as some have already said, knives with long blades exist. Zombies are slow, so I could see it being easy in theory to circle around one and slam a blade into the back of its head. And while I wouldn't go so far as to include a broadsword or katana, a long-bladed knife would be perfect, especially since as Shadow Dragon said, any small axe would require you to get in close and wouldn't do much besides, whereas a knife, with a sharper blade menat for hacking and chopping meat and bone would probably net you more results. As to an rpg... that would actually be a perfect weapon for this game. And while I agree that this game may have more weapons than any other audio shooter, even a small, independent-developed mainstream shooter will typically have quite a few more weapons than what swamp has right now. Swamp is a great game especially when compared to audio games... but in the comparison to mainstream games, it's a small dot on the map which is growing nicely. And like I said earlier, those extras don't have to be mandatory... they're called expansion packs, or as mainstream consoles gamers call them, dlc which means downloadable content. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] game speech
I like recorded speech. While on win7 it sounds good and if you happen to legally or otherwise have something like realspeak its passable I guess. but ms sam in a game just isn't a voice to get you into anything really. And if sapi dies, well you can't play. At 06:22 a.m. 26/01/2012 -0500, you wrote: Hi Jim, Sure, prerecorded speech isn't possible in certain situations as you pointed out with the random descriptions. There comes a point where there are to many combinations and random variations where human speech isn't possible. I'll use my wrestling game project as an example here. The more wrestlers I add to the games database the more names I'd have to record. A database of any size could and probably would end up forcing the developer to record a couple hundred names easy. Then, there can be several variations on the same play by play commentary that makes it difficult to record and play a large data base of ring side commentary. Just describing a successful scoop slam might have four or five variations like this. John Cina quickly scoops Del Rio up, lifts him into the air, and slams him to the mat. John Cina reaches down low, scoops Del Rio into the air, and then drops him like a bad habit.{ Jon Cina shows us his raw strength as he lifts Del Rio up into the air, and then executes a powerful scoop slam to the mat. Those are only three possible ways to describe the same thing. I'm sure given enough time and desire I could probably write up several variations to describe the same move, and I'd have to write up the same descriptions for the female wrestlers using her instead of him and so on. With SAPI its easy to do that because all I have to do is write it down and pass the string to the Speak() funcgtion. If I were to do the same thing using human speech it would take a lot of time recording, editing, and then coding it into the game. No thanks! However, by and large I still feel the games that do have human voice overs sound better. More professional I guess. Once you've played something like WWE for the XBox with real human ringside commentary, sound effects, music, etc that sounds just like WWE Raw having SAPI doing the commentary just does not do it justice! Re: [Audyssey] howlers
well we should in theory be able to be quite realistic, the 64 bit cpu, well help loads. at most 4 cores with up to 64gb ram well 16 and you could rock. For the lower grades most of us have duelcores mostly generation 2 cores. 32 bit, but still, its not like the old days. If you have one of the first gen dulecores or singles though there may be a problem. And don't forget, bows and crossbows have the part about re-useable arrows/bolts by chance. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Can someone please help?
yeah the installer generates an antivirus warning. I used to have an innosetup of mine sweeper and nop on my dropbox. But as intrest went up and down its not up. Francis the author has the files, and code generated, as well as how I cracked the game to make it work. I told him about the problem and how I was able to hack the program and make it run. Its up to him to actually use the innosetup and other things and hack his own installer though. If someone really has trouble, I can probably shove something up again, though who knows I may or may not have my own installer around, or rather others should, I never got comments on the installer so never kept it up. However I can't reallly help much this month as I have managed to use a large ammount of bandwidth due to otr stuff. About the game itself I don't know, other than a miner antivirus problem it runs fine on my xp machine. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] game speech
Hi, Oh, that is an under statement. Microsoft Sam is absolutely terrible. I can't stand playing games or doing anything with that voice. I'm glad Microsoft finally got rid of it and replaced it with Anna. Windows 8 actually even has better voices than Anna available now. However, as Dark has said a number of times on list purchasing a good SAPI voice for games is like buying an accessory for a game console. The ATT voices, Cepstral voices, etc aren't that expensive and a person can get a pretty decent voice for as much as the average audio game and can use it with any and all of his/her games. So its a useful investment. On 1/26/12, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: I like recorded speech.
