[Audyssey] Gaming on Windows Vista?

2006-11-27 Thread Ari
Hi guys,
I don't know whether this has been discussed while I was away, but I'd like to
tell you guys about this interesting article I read in a computer magazine
about gaming on Windows Vista.
First, DirectX 10 will only be made to support Vista. Another thing is that,
not knowing if I understood the article properly, but some old games that work
on XP won't work on Vista.
I'd like to know has anyone else heard anything about gaming on Vista and are
there positive/negative things for us?

Re: [Audyssey] Gaming on Windows Vista?

2006-11-27 Thread Ari
I'd actually also heard something about many games that were made for XP
will not work under Vista. The thing I'm trying to get at, is, if there is
no support for older versions of DirectX, and if the new games will then not
work under old windows versions, the message to us is clear? Adapt or die. I
mean, old games like gma's games and others will not work under Vista, and,
what's even worse is would those of us using XP and older versions of
Windows then have to upgrade to Vista to play new games that come out? How
are developers of accessible games going to adapt to Vista? By the way, from
what you tell me about the whole thing being a sort of web interface, it
sounds awful! At the university, some people use the Active Desktop in
Windows, I can't stand it! I also don't like these web interfaces like the
help system where you try and move round and round in a circle of links!

Hi Ari,
Mind you not all of what I am about to say here I am totally sure
about, but I've been looking over the beta sdks for Vista and it is
going to prove to be quite a bit different from the 98/2000/XP era of
Windows. First major change, from a programming standpoint, is that most
of the sdks and apps will be gueard for Visual Studio .NET 2005 and
later versions. Vista's Platform SDK will be shipping with .NET
Framework 3 which has some drastic upgrades including a new version of
MS SAPI which is fully managed. Meaning, that Sapi will be compatible
with .NET Framework applications. Also the Vista Platform SDK contains a
new approach to accessibility which is going to replace MSAA in the
future, or probably will at any rate. The DirectX 10 SDK appears to be
geared totally for the managed .NET Framework coder, and not giving much
backward compatibility to older games using DirectX 7 and 8. The point
here Microsoft is making a clear drive to get developers to comply with
Visual Studio 2005, use one of the .NET languages, and stop monkeying
around with VB 6 and other older languages, and get with the program. Grin.
Of course, the core of Vista isn't the only consideration. The entire
look and feel of Vista is, well, weird. I will say it is more designed
around a web-centric roll with Internet Exploder 7 practically running
the background, in your face, and waiting for you to jump on the web.
For example XP has had this feature, but Vista has magnified it you can
clear away all your icons on your desktop and make it one massive web
page. In short if you are on cable your home page, www.someplace.com,
can be your desktop, and the web is no further than your desktop. Of
course, your desktop has the usual task bars etc but now you have this
ugly media bar with stock tickers, weather reports, etc running in the
background happily updating away. As I said Vista is very web-centric,
and if you are not web connected Vista might break down, cry, and then
crash. Ha, ha, just joking.
Vista also has a more 3D look and feel than any other os to date.
Probably, one of the major reasons it needs a very modern processor and
lots of ram to run smoothly.
I have heard that visually many apps such as office 2007 are suppose to
look quite different. The menu bars are going to be replaced by a menu
strip, some tool bars added, and I am sure that little twerp, my arch
enemy, the enemy of my computer, the dread of dreads,, Mr. Office
Assistant will have some new and stupid looking looks and animation. Lol!
By the way, does anyone else hate that little goof ball? I mean ever
since his intro in Office 97 I never got use to him. He pops up so much
and is so annoying I named him Q after the Star Trek character. Instead
of Captain Picard saying, Q, get off my bridge, my version kind of
goes like, Q, get off my screen. Ah, but I digress.
Anyway, I have heard there are visual differences in the ways apps look,
buttons look, icons, etc, and most of that is of the real question about
games. So I will summarize quickly what I think is going to be the case.
However, this is a guess only not fact.
Games written with .NET in mind STFC, Rail racer, Monty will certainly
work well as they are employing early versions of the technologies that
are a core of Vista. If problems are encountered they can be easily
updated to meet the challenge.
Games designed on an unmanaged version of DirectX such 7 and 8 may have
a tougher time as I have heard, not prove, that Vista might be dropping
8 support. If true any games, engines, based in languages like VB 6
would be stuck where they are, and remain there until updated to VB.NET
2005 and DirectX 9/10. Point here is that Microsoft is moving on even if
the agdev community is not and it is one reason I urge new developers
not to try VB 6, and start out in the dark ages of programming, and
start out fresh with what is current

Hi Ian,
If you want to be a manager in the Premiership or manage a top club, you
have to pay. After 20 days if you still want to play, you can, but you will
be put in charge of a club from a lower division.
By the way, what's happened to you in Battrick! I've tried about three times
to arrange a friendly with you, but am getting no response. Do you have a
hattrick account? Have you got some tips about how to actually sort out the
squad, it's hard playing!

 Hi Guys,
Could someone who loves soccer also look at
 http://www.tacticalmanager.co.uk/soccerboss/index.php
and maybe give me some advice on how do I show more sessions? Never mind
if you're not understanding what I'm talking about, when you register
you'll see what I mean. Since I've never played it, I've got no clue
really how accessible it is. The great thing is that it uses real players.
What's also very fun about this game is that it's not really about your
club, it's more about you as a manager in the real world, since one club
can decide to sack you if you're not performing well, and then you have to
look for another club to manage, so you really have to make tough
decisions so that you don't lose your job!
 And what's embarrassing?
When you get sacked, it's anounced on the News site!
But, as I said, I still can't play because I can't get it to display more
sessions from 7 upwards, I don't know if you need sighted help if it's
some funny control you click on or what the trick is, since clicking
next or index or even more free sessions isn't helping.
I've emailed the webmaster, but have had no response.

[Audyssey] Hattrick problem

2006-11-28 Thread Ari
Hi all,
How do I set orders in Hattrick, as the combo boxes are not even like Battrick,
you can hardly even use the alt up and down stuff with these ones.
I really think, that if other people would help me, we should send a petition
to Hattrick to see if they can't make their site a bit more accessible, as it
refreshes so often, orders seem very hard to set, for me it is really quite
difficult. Has anyone else got ideas of how to use the site and set orders?

Re: [Audyssey] Gaming on Windows Vista?

2006-11-29 Thread Ari
I've eventually found some articles. Have selected some interesting parts
below.
However, one feature that hasn't racked up many column inches is the new
version
of Microsoft's graphics API (application program Interface), DirectX 10.
All
current games and hardware use DirectX 9c, but with Vista comes a whole new
API.
Unlike previous versions, DirectX 10 (or Windows Graphic Foundation as it
was
known at one point) will be totally new and therefore have limited - if
any -
backwards compatibility with the current crop of DirectX 9 cards.
 Microsoft has
stated that DirectX 9 will be supported side-by-side to an extent with a new
version 9L, but it won't have the same power as cards operating fully with
DirectX 10.
still look good, PC gaming can only
compete if it has an overhaul, which DirectX 10 should provide. One of the
biggest criticisms of PC gaming is that games can look so different
depending on
the hardware you have installed. By unifying some of the underlying
technologies in the hardware and the software that the games are written on,
this should change for the better.

The audio stack in Vista is completely new. Microsoft moved sound card
drivers
out of the kernel, which means they can't crash the whole PC. This choice
has
improved performance enough that rewriting the stack - in 32-bit floating
point
operations rather than 16-bit integers - didn't slow it down. Gone are the
incomprehensible sliders of the XP sound controls; these are replaced by
volume
controls for your speakers, phone line, microphone, line in and CD audio.
And
there's a huge improvement if you ever use headphones with your PC; the new
OS
lets you choose the volume level for each application separately, which
means
that you can turn your music up without being deafened by system sounds.
Better for gaming?

Windows XP is the gamer's OS. Forget consoles, forget pocket gaming
systems: XP
is where it's at. With XP's dominant position in the gaming world, Vista's
going to have to go a long way to improve on XP. However, with the release
of
RC1 the signs are good.

Starting with the basics, Vista comes with an expanded suite of built-in
games.
The familiar faces are all there, but they've been given a makeover and now
use
Vista's new graphics tools. New games include smoothly animated Mah Jong
tiles
and an educational game for children. There's nothing revolutionary, but
the
new look and feel and additional titles make Vista's out-of-the-box gaming
experience more than equal to XP's. The new Games Explorer should show the
majority of games you've installed, making them easier to find and launch.

The answer is simple. MS is doing what it always has. Look at the
current Windows. XP has been out for some time now, yet there were still
service packs for Windows 2k which in many ways was even more stable
than XP itself.

Releasing Vista is no different. MS will support XP for a while yet and
continue to improve upon it. Eventually Windows 2k support will drop and
then XP. By then the next encarnation of Windows will be out I'm sure.

* shaun everiss [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-11-28 22:21]:
This ofcause puts the question why ms is releasing vista at all when there
are 2 more or at least 1 definate service pack of xp coming.
This should give everyone time to adapt to vista, who knows maybe we will
be passed vista by then.
Maybe someone will find ways to make the more anoying features of vista go
away.
I wander what powertoys will be for vista, since every os so far has
powertoys and sometimes kernal toys.
I know sink toy is going to vista, maybe tweakui I only use the old
control panel ui as its all I need.
 Think I better stop straying.

hello Nicol, two things here.

First, if you are speaking of the registration screen for SOD you do not
put a credit card number in that screen. if you and your dad payed for
the game already then you should have received an unlock code from GMA
games, this is what you need to put into the registration screen.

As for the biogrenades, Thomas has already handled that question well, I
would only clarify by saying that when you first hit the spacebar you
get a rising tone, this is a relative indication of how hard you are
going to throw the grenade, the next press of the spacebar actually
throws it. As he says they are a tricky weapon to learn to use but well
worth it.

Tom

HI friends
I'm still waiting for my dad to return to me with the correct credit
card number because the game is asking for a 16-digit number and the one
he gave me is 17 digits. Anyway I'm so long practicing throwing a
grenade in the demo version. Here is something which is totally unclear
to me. Please! I don't want any spoilers! If someone can just explain
this to me a bit clearer. The manual says if you wait 1 second before
pressing space the second time you throw the grenade it will travel 45
feet before landing. When the game started I decided to practice
throwing a grenade without waiting for a monster to be present. So I
was standing at the start of the maze. My back was facing the wall. A
long passage stretched before me, definitely longer than 45 feet. I
pressed, g, I pressed space, I waited one second and I pressed space
again and I was killed. How is this possible? I wasn't 45 feet away from
a wall. Is it possible that if a grenade hits a door I will also be
killed? Because its possible that the first door in the maze is 45 feet
away from the starting point. I tried again, this time also standing
with my back against THE WALL AT THE STARTING POSITION OF THE MAZE, I
waited 2 seconds before I pressed spacebar a second time and this time
the grenade didn't kill me. I noticed that, whether the grenade kills me
or not, it makes a clicking sound. If I press spaced a second time it
will make the sound of a blast mine but then it makes a clicking sound.
Does this clicking sound mean the grenade is landing on the floor, on a
monster or against a wall? The manual didn't said that if the grenade
hits a door it will kill me. It only said if it hits a wall it kill me
so that's why I can't understand if I'm at the starting position of the
maze and I press space again after 1 second the grenade kills me. I
managed to kill a scientist though. Do you think its possible to throw a
grenade at a monster within a room? The most rooms are about 30 by 40
feet. There is some rooms which are 50 by 30 feet or 50 by 70 feet.
Thanks

Still I am not complaining, I have all the games, both free and registered,
and I was never able to beat treasure hunt even on easy even with the
modified sound packs.
Oh well, this is a test for all and there are still a few around.
Its a pitty bpc died though, they did play a major part in things, I was
hoping to buy th1 and 2, Hmm wander if th2 will be released in whatever
uncompleted state it is in.
At 04:29 PM 12/4/2006, Stephen wrote:

message thoroughly as we can all learn a thing or too from it.
--

I started out around 2001 I think. my goal was to create games for
blind people. at first they were free, and then suddenly I started
charging, because Treasure Hunt had become a real first person
shooter complete with an overall objective.
That was when I had lots of time, and, most importantly, motivation.
I wanted to leave a mark in the so-called blind gaming community,
because I realized something quite quickly.
We had too many rated E games, games for kids rather than adults.
So began my major upgrade to Treasure Hunt. There's a common
misconception that I just wanted to expand the game and put more
features in it, bringing it up from version three to four. The real
reason was that we needed more serious action games; games which run
around a storyline.
So now we were in the four year round about of BPC's life. Treasure
Hunt was released six months later, I believe February of 2005.
Now, everyone who followed the evolution of Treasure Hunt remembers
the major patch upgrades. The game was quite bug-filled, which showed
me that my skills in programming actually weren't as well-planted as
I had thought they were.
And, of course, my beta testers were jokes, save a select few (you
know who you are)
So from Feburary 2005 to early 2006, I was releasing patch after
patch. That was my job; it wasn't a good experience for me at all,
and I quickly realized Treasure Hunt was, in itself, a failure. The
game turned out to be rated E although I had hoped it wouldn't be,
and some things did not work for no apparent reason.
After this period of patch releasing, I arived at the first really
stable version of Treasure Hunt, 4.25, and that's when I was able to
turn my attention to the finances of the organization. Payments were
coming in nicely the first couple months, then declined. They went
back up in December of 2005, thanks to Christmas shoppers. Developers
love Christmas.
Finally, I saw a steady drop of purchases, In March, I made one sale,
April was zero, and May was around that number. But then came a
further change, and it was not a pleasant one.
someone actually filed a charge back against me. Can you believe the
morality of this person? I won't name them, but they will know who
they are when they read this. This individual had bought a copy of
the game from me, and then turned around and claimed that I made an
unauthorized purchase to their credit card.
Not only did Pay Pal refund their money, they also gave them $10.00
extra. This leech was paid $10.00 for buying my game!
I had given them the registration key and everything, I saw no fault
with the order. They got what they paid for.
Now, Consider all of what I have said. I did consider everything, and
I'll briefly recap.
Treasure Hunt was a rated E game when it wasn't supposed to be;
someone accused me of credit card fraud, something which degraded my
reputation greatly; there was no more money being made; I lost my
motivation; and, finally, I hated all those 13-year-olds trying to
make games. Unfortunately, people seem to trust any word of mouth
they get, even if it's from one person only, My sales went down
dramatically after the chargeback.
So, now it was June. One fine day, I decided to just throw it all
away. I will admit it can be called cowardly for me to do so, but I
did not really have a choice. Pressing on would have resulted in a
lawsuit, which I do not have the money to fund, A plane which started
off quickly and then crash landed, that's what happened with
BPCPrograms, SD, And that, my fellow gamers, was the story of the
BPCPrograms Software Division

[Audyssey] muds for beginners?

2008-01-26 Thread ari
Hi all,
The library for the blind here in SA got hold of a braille book from the
library in the US, called Bots by Andrew Leonard. This book is very
interesting, examining computers and Artificial Intellegence, and discussing
things such as chat bots, etc. This book talks about an online mud game in
the early 90's from the university of Texas, which is text-based, and called
Point Moo-t. Does this still exist, and how do I get started with muds. I've
often thought of trying a mud, but I don't want fantasy stuff, are there
more realistic muds? What's a good, text-only mud for beginners? I've also
heard that I need a thing called a mud client, what is this, and from where
do I get it? I'm using JAWS 8.0.
Thanks

[Audyssey] braintraining games

2008-01-26 Thread ari
Hi all,
Here's a site which us braintraining enthusiasts can investigate, it gives
links to braintraining games, some free, some paid-for, maybe some of you
guys together with me can investigate if any of these are accessible, as
there are quite a lot.

[Audyssey] dr. Kawashima

2008-01-26 Thread ari
Hi all,
Reading about Dr. Kawashima's brain training, I can't see why it couldn't be
made accessible, as it is based very much on numbers. Does anyone have any
suggestion as to how I may be able to find an email address or contact
details for someone whose involved with dr. Kawashima in order to suggest
developing or modifying his brain training program so that blind people can
use it? I'm going to find the add and write so long to a society for the
blind in Japan, as I'm sure that if they're interested, they would at least
be able to get in touch with him, or I'd love to know what is done for
Japanese blind people who are into gaming, as Nintendo and many of these
companies are based in Japan, maybe there are games for the blind in Japan,
but we haven't really heard of them because they're not in English?

[Audyssey] weird psp blind product!

2008-01-26 Thread ari

Look at this absolutely weird link, it's written very badly, but as far as I
can make out, it seems like someone's developing a program to work with the
psp which eventually plans to alert blind people whose in rooms with them,
and other weird stuff, this project seems absolutely nuts!

Has anyone got a copy of monkeyterm for me, or knows where I can get the

[Audyssey] Inform Problem

2008-01-27 Thread ari
Hi all,
I can't use the inform interpreter that comes with Time's Ashes to play
inform games, as it won't read the whole screen when I'm reading with the
jaws cursor routed, I'm using JAWS 8. I've been using Winfrotz TTS, but I
don't like using it at all, as I prefer reading my games with jaws, because
I can get things to be spelled, I also like reviewing the screen in bits,
not just having the whole thing rush-read to me. This problem is weird,
because I never had this problem on the old pc, I'm not sure what's wrong,
the longer I play, the text in my inform window becomes confused, example,
when I type in a command, the text at the bottom will be text I'd received
from a command I'd used ages ago! What's wrong?

Re: [Audyssey] great technology newsletter was Re: accessible games andavg antivirus

2008-02-03 Thread ari
Is this a blind thing, I mean, does he compare them with JAWS or other
screen readers? That's actually a cool idea if someone had the time, some
persons very knowledgeable about computers like Thomas, who know how to use
them, could make a computer magazine for blind people, I don't mean one that
focuses on adaptive technologies like AccessWorld or Main Menue, but one
that would give reviews of software based totally on how accessible or
screenreader friendly they are. I know that many people ask on mailing
lists, but, for me, first, they are not comprehensive, and, second, because
many users are at different levels of computing, you sometimes get people
saying something is inaccessible when it actually is very accessible, or
vice versa. Like sighted magazines show you how to do things with a mouse,
this one would show you how to do things in other ways, in the way that, for
example, a sighted magazine would have a feature in showing, for example,
video editing, blogging, getting started with Excel, but explaining it too
obscurely for blind people, like they would say click on the yellow
button, this magazine would show accessible ways of doing things.

Re: [Audyssey] piracy of judgment day

2008-02-05 Thread ari
Given what Thomas says, to me the piracy question is relative, in some cases
and for some products, I have seen cases where I would justify piracy, but,
in this case, I think it's awful. We must remember that Liam is not some
multi-million-dollar company, and I also don't think he's charging huge
price for his game. I mean, take the other fact that he also bothers giving
us support and helping out as well, it's really not nice that keys for his
games are being circulated. I do agree though that I hate the whole thing
with a game where you format the computer, but are people responsible enough
that if you don't put security measures on they won't pirate?

so that I can carry it around and play it on other people's computers
without having to install it and causing them hassles. I've already put nvda
on, but that was a specially designed portable ap, but, as I've heard, you
can also do it with games, so it's cool. Also, what you need, is if someone

Re: [Audyssey] piracy of judgment day

2008-02-06 Thread ari
No, there are instances that I have seen where for the case of humanity, I
am looking at it from the perspective of the developing world where money is
scarce, and, let us say, before NVDA and free screen readers, there were,
let's call them needs, and there were questions of refused funding for such
programs while a fellow blind comrade's livlihood was in peril because if he
didn't have such software he couldn't get a job he needed to support his
family, even though he was willing to work, some people were unable or
unwilling to help out. I'm being cryptic, but I can still defend piracy.
There are also instances of persons living in countries under US sanctions
who, a certain blind person wanted to become a teacher, and, because he was
not allowed to import screen reading programs, well, provisions had to be
made. I know that this is technically piracy, but I regard this as delicate
shades of grey where I would allow human discretion.

here here Darren! Not judgemental! Sure, it is stealing, but in some cases I
consider it a more Robin Hood type act. But I do think for blind games and
software, for me ethically, piracy is a no-no, because people like Thomas
and Liam are one-man businesses, trying to make a living, they're doing it
for a very small market like us, they're also not rich rich, and also games
are not an absolute necessity, but I do agree that if a person does pirate,
I'm thankful there's not a huge spying satellite judging harshly every case.

[Audyssey] Pac Mate games again!

2008-02-07 Thread ari
Hi all,
Have I been missing something for ages, or is there still no solution to the
problem of, for me at least, not being able to play text adventures on the
Pac Mate? With the Inform interpreter, even when I try the JAWS cursor, the
PM is silent and you can't even load a story, and with tads, although I've
tried playing around with the view menue, only half the game text is
sometimes read. Is there another interpreter for pocket pc which I can try,
I'd really love to play Alan games on the Pac Mate!
Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] piracy of judgment day

2008-02-07 Thread ari
Hi Thomas,
I have also been thinking about it from your point of view, and it really is
a tricky situation, but thanks to some new good free screen readers there
isn't as big a problem as it used to be. What I would wish for is that, if a
person needed a product like jaws, and they were living in a developing
country, if Freedom Scientific could work with some aid charities where
something could be arranged. Big companies like Microsoft do alter their
prices for different regions, but, as you say, they have enough people to do
so, it's just that I have seen first-hand experiences of people having huge
problems because they can't afford the software, but I also really do
understand the other point of view. If screen reader companies were to start
regional pricing, then people in rich countries would find a way to import
or get coppies from developing countries. One thing which someone did
mention, many of us are very happy with the GW Micro idea, because many
dealers in some developing countries don't have enough money to allow
customers to do a monthly payback, but the GW model has given quite a few
people a good solution. Even in a country which is less developed for blind
people, I'm still always grateful that I was born in South Africa, because
some blind people are treated absolutely awfully in some other countries. I
know, until recently, there was a law in one country which didn't allow
blind people to marry, because apparrently the government of that country
actually considered blindness on parr with severe mental problems, and in
many superstitious cultures, if you're born blind, it's considered by
everyone that you are cursed, there was a case my friend had to deal with
where a father had basically locked his own blind son in a room, not even
allowing him to go out into the community because, in his eyes, his blind
son brought shame and disgrace on his family.

[Audyssey] Article about Interactive Fiction for Spag magazine

2008-02-09 Thread ari
Hi all,
I have emailed the editor of Spag magazine for players of Interactive
Fiction. I got a reply, but, because of some attachments, which I don't know
how exactly to remove because it would go over the size of messages for the
list, I have forwarded the message to Thomas. Anyway, the point of this
message is that Spag magazine would like an article about us as blind
players playing interactive fiction, the next issue is coming out in a
month's time. I am quite an amateur in IF, and still haven't tried out many
interpreters and so on, so could someone who has more experience then I do
with IF write the article about playing IF from a blind person's
perspective, maybe saying what interpreters don't work well, how it's done,
I don't know, just a general thing to make people more aware of us. There
are some things I'd like whoever writes the article to highlight, though,
like the, if we put in that we're still having problems getting these Pocket
Interpreters to work on the Pac Mate, maybe someone would in the IF
community would be prepared to modify them a bit, as the Source Code is
freely available, and maybe other issues if there are still accessibility
problems or just anything.

One other thing for the article which I forgot to mention, the problem that
some text games need you to see graphics to solve them, an example would be
the Quest game about you in a hotel trying to solve a murder. If noone with
more experience has the time twrite the article, I'll be happy to try, but
I'm worried it will not be accurate.

For example, on facebook, there are many brain tests where you have to solve

give us an accessible game with sound effects for that Thomas, lol!
Seriously, there's this really cool sighted board game, where, I can't
remember what it was called, but what happened was the pieces were planes,
and you threw dice and moved on a map, trying to answer questions about
capitals and stuff, there would be cards you had to draw as well, with
chance events like a terrible storm has diverted you to Helsinki. I can't
remember exactly, but the aim of the game was I think at the beginning, you
drew something that decided from where you started and to where you had to
go, something like your flight must go from Washington to Melbourne.
I do actually wish there were some fun ways for learning geography, as it's
hard to get braille maps here and I'd love to get a better idea where
countries are compared to each other. I can of course say that Germany and
France, for example, are in Europe, and I think I'm right that they even
border each other, but I don't really know who's west of who, or where Ohio
and Florida and all the states in the US are when you here people talk about
them.

[Audyssey] fast gaming fingers and reflex?

2008-02-09 Thread ari
Hi all,
This is quite a weird question or thought, I just would please like some
feedback and funny stories if anyone has experience of this. I was trying to
play running in an olympics computer game with my friend, now, how you run
is you press the left and then the right arrow one after the other. What I
want to know, is even from small, he has been able to press these arrows or
at least, to use his fingers at incredible speeds compared to me. I am
really much slower at games that need quick reflexes then he is. My question
is, do you guys think that playing more would improve a person's fingerwork?
I really find it amazing that people manage to finish games like Troopanum
on absolute hard, I don't get anywhere near that, and, is it somehow a
strategy, or extremely good reflex and listening? I also find it fascinating
at how much the mind plays a part when you want to play. Sometimes, a person
wants to play something fast-action, but, if you're not up to it mentally on
that day, if you feel relaxed, even if you want to play well you just can't
get yourself into the frame of mind to get the best hand-ear coordination
possible, and, is it just me, but when you are with friends and want to show
them how to do something in a game, nearly all the time that you're on your
own, you can do it, but when your friends are there, at the back of your
mind you know that you just have to get it right, you know that they're
listening, hoping you'll show them how to do something, it's at moments like
that that you just can't do it, like, I remember on my Nintendo, on the
athletics, if you jump over the high jump bar three times in a row, you get
a lovely little alien guy coming down in a jetpack, with cool sound effects,
and giving you ten thousand points, but it was almost impossible to do it
when you wanted to show your friends!

Tell me Thomas, as I'm not clear on this, I understand a bit about naming
and trade marks, but, what would happen, if, for example, a company invented
a game, and another company invented practically the same game, but just
with a different name, can you copyright a concept? Example, a person makes
a game where they fly around in space visiting planets, and calls it Planet
Visitor, and then someone else makes a game with exactly the same concept
and calls it Galaxy Traveler, would the first company have a case? I've also
wondered this in screen readers, say now JAWS have made a set of keystrokes
for their screen reader, what would happen if another company started up,
making a screen reader that used the exact keystrokes as JAWS, would JAWS
have a case?

Re: [Audyssey] logic and spatial awareness games

2008-02-11 Thread ari
Thanks Dark, but what's really rubbish is you know, what I was also thinking
of for logic, are logic puzzles, but I can't find accessible ones, I've been
to plenty of sites and I they're all flash-based, you know, the kind of
puzzles where, for example, five boys date five girls, and they give you
clues for you to work out who dated who. For spatial, I'm with you, but,
something like Blank Block, I'm just rubbish at trying to picture moves in
advance, that's probably why I'm also rubbish at chess, I just don't vision
all the possibilities with all the ifs and buts, this spatial question is
really tricky! About chess, I heard someone once, would love to know you
guy's thoughts on this, but do you guys think it's harder for a blind person
to play chess given the same amount of time with a chess clock as compared
to a sighted person, I'm not talking about braininess here, I'm talking
about do you guys think sighted people can see moves mor obviously, since
their eyes can sort of do a more visualisation of the different parts of the
board sort of quicker then a blind person having to use their hands, not to
mention that, while the blind person is moving, the sighted person can look
at the board, but the blind person can't feel the board while the sighted
person is moving, lol, can you imagine!

hope it will get more of us talking about how we got into games. I'm
fascinated by your history as well, yes, we couldn't play half the stuff,
but that doesn't stop us from just racing and crashing the car, but now that
consol games are so expensive, it's probably quite awful for people getting

not having the cool -in-one stuff we did. What other games did you enjoy on

Re: [Audyssey] UK devs any1 4cricket

2008-02-16 Thread ari
Hi Mark,
I think at the moment, for cricket fans like us, and even football, it's
just a fantasy for the moment. These sports are so popular that, as I've
said forever, it would be great to give such projects to RNIB or, for the
football, let blind organisations all over Europe come together to produce a
mega game. As far as I'm concerned, if you want a really good cricket game
with teams, sounds, and commentary, that's probably not something you just
want one guy to do, you need much feedback, you need people from all over
the cricket world like us from South Africa, our Ausie, Kiwi, New Zealand
and English pals, and of course India, I mean, there are many blind people
in India, I actually would think that organisations could cooperate on a
cricket game as well. Well, at the moment, your only choice is Batrick, we
can do that in the meantime. When I think of a cricket game, I'm thinking of
some sort of solution where we could use stereo again, where, let's say, the
batsman has an area stretching from the far left to the far right, the
bowler tries and bowls, and the batsman maybe tries to move towards the ball
and hit it, he can hit it to different directions, but there are many other
complex things like fielding and things, I don't want a game where I just
press a number for the shot I want, I've always thought that sports games
should really most of the time hardly ever be down to luck, and that, if you
time or do your moves exactly according to extreme split-second timing, you
should get results, because a sports game like cricket and football for me,
quite a bit of the time it can work a little bit on randomness, but rather
also work on whether you're able to keep focus and concentrate, or, if you
use some players and make them run too much, they get tired.

[Audyssey] lower than bsc ok for games?

2008-02-16 Thread ari
Hi all,
This is quite a tricky question, I suppose this goes to our developers
like Thomas. I have a friend who, his situation is a bit tricky, in that
he's not sure what to do, he wants to develop Information Systems for
businesses, but he would also like to try his hand at games developing. Now,
his problem is this, to get into the bsc of computer science, you need maths
and science, but he didn't do science at school, so he can't get into the
BSC. Some people say that you need physics to be able to program games, to
like understand speeds and distances and things, but is this really
necessary? Instead of doing a BSC, he can do a diploma in IT at a college,
or, at the uni, he can do a BCom in Information Systems. If he were to do
the Information Systems BCom, would the programming which he would pick up,
where he would learn to make Information Systems, be OK for him to develop,
even maybe some basic games? I know he'd like to do the BCOM, as his main
goal is to develop business systems, but do you think he'd be able to also
develop games and programs with it? I'm unfortunately not sure what the
diploma in IT teaches, but is a BSC really necessary to understand things
like Artificial Intelligence or to program computer games? Sorry, I know
this sounds a bit confused, but, basically, I think what I want to know is,
do you really need a top-of-the-range BSC in computer science to be a good
games developer. He has enough maths to do a diploma in IT, or a BCom
Information Systems, but his physics and science is really not good.

Re: [Audyssey] UK devs any1 4cricket

2008-02-16 Thread ari
Oh sorry Mark, I didn't read board game, I sort of probably just got carried
away by cricket game! Well, you'd have to probably sort of make rules for a
game like that, because I've never heard of a cricket board game. One fun
little game my friend and I used to play, you have three batsmen, then you
take a dice. You throw it, and one, two, three, four and six are for runs,
and a five is a wicket. You use your three batsmen, and he uses his. For the
toss, you do one chooses odd, and the other even, the winner decides whether
to bowl or bat first, and you do as many innings or balls in an innings as
you want. We also devised a more complicated cricket game using dice, but
I've forgotten a bit how it worked, I will actually write an article about
games we invented using dice. We actually managed to make quite a few sports
games using a dice, it's amazing what imagination and a dice can do.

Re: [Audyssey] lower than bsc ok for games?

2008-02-16 Thread ari
ah thanks Thomas, so it's probably then ok for him to do the BIS and then
just read up books on games programming, because, as I've said earlier, he
unfortunately can't choose courses out of degrees, the BSC is a fixed degree
and he just doesn't have the science and physics to be able to do that, but
he's not too bad at maths though so I think he'll then be ok with the BIS
and reading like what you say, because he unfortunately doesn't have the
choice at our uni to take and do stuff independent of the whole degree,
they're not the most flexy people.

Hi Tim Are you really, really sure you'd like cricket? All my friends from
non-cricket-playing countries think I, and all the rest of the commonwealth
are totally mad. I have a Portuguese friend, and, whenever I'm watching
cricket, we have a joke where he says to me that only the English are mad
enough to invent a game where you hit the ball with an oar thing and run
between two pairs of sticks, and only people like me here in South Africa
are mad enough to play it with them. I haven't asked him though about what
he would say that the English also invented football, which we all love, but
he would probably say that that was some kind of luck. I hope cricket does
grow though, I hear they're trying to get people in China to play, we could
have more countries to play in the world cup. I did actually once hear that
they do play cricket also in New York as well.

Hi Dark,
It's not about time, it's about the problems here, because the University
doesn't have a gap course which can help him if he never did Physics at
school, and the problem is that, unfortunately here there isn't a place
which can do such advanced stuff in braille if he wants to do the sort of
bridging course because they don't know how to get the physics stuff into
braille in the first place. I don't know, maybe he should just do the
Information Systems BCOM first and then just hope he'll know enough to do
some programming for games or pick it up later I suppose.

There are wap games, you play by clicking on links of the wap site. Go to

I think Code Factory also makes a few phone games for blind people, but I

Actually Jim, I think what you've just said is probably some of the most
encouraging stuff for someone like him, because I think many people, even

Hi Liam,
I Still want Sphere, I wish you were still wanting to do that. I'd
definitely buy a well-made table-tennis or Pong game, what I mean is, a Pong
game with tournaments, strangely-behaving tables, maybe different types of
shots and bounces, fun features, crowds, a Brit umpire like what they have
at Wimbledon tennis, and also multi-player, that would have really been fun!
Please!! think of doing Sphere again. Shots could have counter-shots,
walls on the sides of tables where the ball would bounce off, bril.

[Audyssey] Savage Gambit

2008-02-17 Thread ari
Hi all,
Is there anywhere from where I can download The Savage Gambit and the
trainer thing? The site where it's on seems closed down. You know, thinking
about boxing games, I don't know if it's changed nowdays because I haven't
tried the latest consols yet, but most of these games are really not like
real fights! Most boxing fights are about strategy and go to points with few
knock-downs or knock-outs, and to concentrate for three minutes at a time,
for twelve rounds must probably be exhausting. The only boxing game I did
see nearly like this was unfortunately not too accessible, on the Sega
Megadrive called Foreman For Real.

Asunto: What's happened to Code Factory Games?

Hello,
I would please like to know why Code Factory is not selling all the
wonderful entertainment and educational games that were made? Are there
any plans to make these games available again, as I really loved the
professional way in which they were made using real actors, and as there is
already not much available for blind people in the way of gaming
entertainment, it really seems quite sad that these games are not available
anymore. I do understand that Mobile Speak and those solutions are the most
important, but these games were also much fun.
Thanks
Ari

Re: [Audyssey] Any suggestions for the savage gamut?

2008-02-19 Thread ari
I agree the game must be challenging, but the Bopit-style, constrictive
interface was really too stiff. I want the trainer not to have such a
terrible voice, I don't think the idea of punch and counter-punch is even
such a good idea, in that real boxing doesn't work that one punch can only
be countered by another, and that if you miss a punch, that it is certain
you'll be hit, if possible I'd really like the ability of boxers to somehow
be able to move around the ring, don't know how that would work, I would
like a feature where you could set things like shorter or longer fights,
what I mean is, you could really have three minute rounds with one minute
rests, but the boxer's stamina mustn't then be arcade, I mean, it's
understandable that if you punch the guy many times without a response,
there'll be trouble, but it, like real boxing, it must be more strategy in
that the boxers must avoid being punched so much if you aren't that good,
you must be able to scrap out a long fight, stamina and endurance. I mean a
certain arcade and real life mode, where arcade is your many
knock-downs, and your real-life if you're not really good against an
amateur boxer, or if you're both really professional, you then won't be able
to knock him out. Maybe it could be like a boxing game like World Champ
where you need to train hard to get more power and things.

[Audyssey] Pac Mate BX games and FS

2008-02-20 Thread ari
Hi all,
Please forward to people who are interested in games and have a Pac Mate. I
don't know if any of you guys would also write to show that we are quite a
group who would like this, but I have emailed FS, attaching coppies of the
game interpreters that I've had some sort of success with, and told FS of my
experience, example that the .z5 and tads interpreters won't read all the
game text, and that they should try and make the interface so that JAWS can
read the environment automatically without having to route the cursors. I
know that, probably for the most part, I don't know whether I can expect
anything from FS, but, like I tried to explain to them in my email, text
adventures are a past time of many blind people, and it is a fun thing to do
while travelling, as well as improving language and thinking. So, I'd also
appreciate other Pac Mate owners to also write in if they are having these
problems, it's is a long shot, but maybe FS will do something if enough of
us are interested.

Re: [Audyssey] Pac Mate BX games and FS

2008-02-20 Thread ari
Thanks Charles. To continue this, we can go to the Otysey group, but I must
say that the response you got is really awful, I mean, you think, every
computer that a blind person in the whole world would use has these games
on. Aparrently the Window Eyes people have made WE to work with solitaire, I
mean, is it really too much effort for FS, especially when you think that WE
users are just as capable of doing their jobs with GW Micro seeming to be
more flexible on things. Looking at this as well, If I hadn't spent all the
money on FS, I would have traded in both my products. For me, the Pac Mate
has rubbish braille support, especially a person like me needing better
foreign language braille, and not this computer braille for calendar and
everything, and I don't think the upgrade from JAWS 8 to 9 was really worth
much in terms of enhancements, it shouldn't have been a major upgrade.

[Audyssey] flash and video problem

2008-02-23 Thread ari
Hi all,
You can reply off-list, but this is also with audiogames and flash games, as
nothing seems to work, I know this might be considered a bit OT, but I've
asked on so many lists and noone has had an answer for me and I'm really
beginning to get desperate because I really don't know what to do, sorry. My
problem is that, I can't work out if it's a flash issue, but for quite a few
weeks now, it doesn't look like flash content, like Youtube Videos,
sudo-san, nothing wants to play. I click, for example, on a link of a
youtube video, or a link that says watch a video, or on the sudo-san link,
I'm getting absolutely no response. The page of the video pops up with the
buttons to play them, but even when I try and press the flash buttons,
nothing happens. How can I work out what's going on?
Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] Number Memory Game

2008-03-04 Thread ari
Hi John,
Yes, something like that, more objects, maybe higher levels, and it would
also be cool if the objects had more sound effects. What I mean is, some
objects have sound effects when you move through them with your arrows, but
others don't. Maybe for those who don't like sound effects there would be a
choice to turn them off.

Re: [Audyssey] The Sega

2008-03-13 Thread ari
Hi Tom,
I also have a Sega Megadrive, absolutely bril. I think the Maddon, if you
learn the menues and the key functions, and maybe let the pc do some stuff
for you such as, I think after you've passed, you leave the control and the
pc automatically runs, not sure of this, but I think there's a possibility
it could sort of be accessible. Don't know about the other games, but am
sadly guessing that Sonic and stuff aren't really playable. Get Golden Axe
if you can, you just walk right and when you hear something trying to attack
you, you can try attacking it, I think it's quite accessible. The WWF (now
WWE after being sued) games like the Arcade Game is absolutely accessible,
also Toughman Boxing, Rugby World Cup 1995 (with quite a bit of practice and
learning tactics), are accessible. Another game with commentary that might
be accessible is Bret Hull (really sorry about the spelling) hockey. This
game is quite fun, because you can remove the golies, so if you do that you
get these like really huge scores.

[Audyssey] What is a Crossword?

2008-03-18 Thread ari
Hi all,
On the subject of Crosswords, I know this does sound a stupid question, but
I've never really understood what exactly a crossword is, even though I've
heard braille ones do exist, I've never seen one, from where do you get
them? I know it's a grid thing, but how large is it and what do people
mean when they talk about things like joined, across, etc? Is there an
accessible one that I could maybe see or try to understand it, I know ME2
used to make one, but I was never able to try that.

Re: [Audyssey] Braile rubics cube

2008-03-25 Thread ari
No Ann, I'm also depressed about that. People have told me to just get a
cube and get someone to help me label it. There used to actually be many
braille games that there isn't now, cludo, the cube, many other games as
well.
