Hi Tom, I am glad your starting to feel better! Bathrooms I think were supposed to be one of the most dangerous rooms in the house, next to the kitchen. I am shocked, but pleased you decided to flaunt your evolution thing with the new and improved wrestling game! I would have played the other one too, but I got to admit, I am super excited to hear this! al -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, September 07, 2013 6:04 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] USA Games News 9/7/2013 USA Games News Sep. 7, 2013 Introduction Welcome gamers to the USA Games News. We know that it has been a very long time since our last news letter, and we felt it was a good time to send out a new one. So here we are with news and information about USA Games and our products. First, we would like to thank all of you who participated in our informal survey regarding the USA Games Evolution Engine a few days ago. We really valued your comments and suggestions, and your responses really helped give us some direction regarding our engine. More on that later. Second, I would like to state that I am personally doing a lot better than I have been for a long time. Just to recap last year I had a number of health related issues from the common cold to a more serious situation where I fell down while getting out of the bathtub and seriously injured my neck. After many months of rest and therapy I am now doing better than I have been in months. Although, I am not 100% back to normal I am able to get up and do some programming, and am slowly but surely getting our development back on some sort of schedule. I can not say for sure when any of our products will be ready for release, but it should be enough to know I am once again working on them. Evolution 3D A couple of days ago I sent out an informal survey regarding the future of the Evolution Engine. The basic point of the survey was to figure out if potential third-party game developers wanted it to remain primarily a C++ based engine as it is now, or if they wanted us to branch out into .NET or Python. The majority of you felt keeping it as a C++ library was the best option, and that it was not really in our best interests to put out a .NET or Python based engine at this time. This has really helped us feel satisfied that the direction we are heading is a good one for us and our customers, and for the foreseeable future we will continue to keep the Evolution Engine as a C++ library and will likely license it more as a C++ API rather than an engine as such. There are of course many good reasons to keep it as a C++ based library rather than rewrite it as a .NET library or as a Python module. The main one is we have already put more than two years into development, the engine library is stable, and rewriting it would only delay its release. For that reason alone it makes sense to keep what we have and license that. The other reasons include easier access to libraries and APIs for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Most libraries out there are designed for C or C++, and while there are usually wrappers for .NET or Python that is not always the case. In cases where there aren't available wrappers we would have to spend time writing them to make them available to our .NET or Python engine when they are instantly available to an engine written in C++. Factor in better performance, better security, and less dependencies need to be installed we are pretty sure the community is right. Keeping our engine written in C++ has many advantages and few disadvantages. The only downside to this is that it has a higher learning curve for new developers, but that could be overcome with some decent guides and documentation. After all, one of the purposes of writing the Evolution Engine was to simplify access to things like speech, input, sound, and so forth. All of those things are wrapped using wrapper classes that make it simple to get a basic game up and running in a few ours in C++ as all the low-level code for things like DirectInput, DirectSound, Sapi, etc is wrapped up in quick and easy to use classes. While not quite as easy as BGT, for example, it still would not be nearly as hard as doing it all from scratch. As many of you probably know all of our commercial games like Tomb Hunter and Raceway are written using the Evolution Engine, and it is fairly stable. So I think once we figure out a few things we may begin licensing it to potential third-parties sometime in the not too distant future. Tomb Hunter It has been several months since we have released a beta or any news on the progress of this game, and we decided to just give everyone a quick update on the progress of this game. We are in the process of updating the games story line, adding some new levels, but we would prefer to keep certain aspects quiet until we have something final for everyone to download and play. What we can say right now

POSSIBLE SPOILERS According to the bible, Noah took 7 each of the "clean" animals according to the dietary law, but all other animals were taken onboard in pairs. So if the question is how many giraffes are on the ark, that would mean only two. I wasn't sure of the word after giraffes. Did you mean vertebra? Re: [Audyssey] A Question About the Best user Interface
Ok, so maybe that is all you really need to do. Just create a small guide with the program that details how to use it with the various screen readers. To me, that is a lot easier then trying to rewrite the whole thing with all the bells and whistles and it would also have the purpose of informing people on how to use other similar games. Re: [Audyssey] A Question About the Best user Interface
I guess it all depends. One of my biggest issues is not being able to reread choices, especially in long lists and/or tables. Is there a way to review the choices the game gives ? I assume no arrow keys since you said it would be text. If it is possible to review these wrestler choices over again, then one screen would probably be better then a long vertical list. al -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2013 8:14 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: [Audyssey] A Question About the Best user Interface Hi everyone, I have a quick question I thought I'd throw out here to the community to see what you thought about this. As many of you know for a while now I have been developing a WWE wrestling game in Python, that is largely text based, but one problem is not all the performers can fit on the same screen when selecting the challenger or the opponent for the match. As the database of male and female performers grows this problem will only get worse. Now, there are two ways of handling this issue. The way a sighted developer would handle this is they would table all the options on the screen into columns and rows rather than put them in a vertical list like this. Select the challenger. 1. Steve Austin 2. Daniel Bryan 3. John Cena 4. Christian 5. Ted DiBiase Jr. 6. Edge 7. Mark Henry 8. Kane Now, obviously the advantage of doing it this way is I could conceivably squeeze a huge database of performers onto a single screen simply by placing them into a table instead of a vertical list. I should be able to place somewhere between 50 and 60 performers onto a single screen. My concern though is that it will take more work reviewing the screen to find the option for the performer you want to play as you'd basically have to examine the entire table to find out that a certain performer is number 36 out of 50 possibilities. The alternative is I could create a vertical list of performers, but split it up over several screens. That means if a database of challengers had 60 performers you would get the first 20, press enter, see the next 20, press enter again, and get the last 20 performers. In some aspect sits more accessible, but I don't like it because I'd rather see as many performers as possible on the same screen. So any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas? Thanks. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Tom, Well...at least there is that silver lining to my ignorance, lol. I am sorry to have been such a bother, but maybe it was better to figure out this kind of thing now, rather then later, maybe? I mean, is it a huge amount of work? However, your problems have made me rethink the wisdom of writing purely text based games. While it is easier to do from a technical standpoint I realize that because of Windows many people don't know or have forgotten how to use purely text based applications. They assume, for example, because every Windows application has a PC cursor that there is one in the text based game they are using and make mistakes like trying to route the Jaws cursor to the non-existent PC cursor, or try to use arrow keys when the app wasn't designed for them. For those and probably potentially other reasons maybe I should make my wrestling game a fully graphical application, self voicing, etc as it would be universally accessible and no one would be left confused looking at an out dated interface. That will do it alright. You need to keep in mind these are text based games from the 90's designed for Dos not Windows. That's why things like the arrow keys do not work because they didn't have things like DirectInput for dos and it was difficult to write applications that used keys that didn't map to a simple ASCII keycode. The cin function in C++, which I suspect they are using, can only accept input from letters, numbers, and symbols like plus, minus, divide, and so on. Keys like the arrow keys, home, end, page up, page down, and so on don't have a specific keycode and require a much more complex input handling system than I suspect the developers were willing to write for games like Piledriver and Wrestling League Simulator. That's pretty par for text games though. For example, even in my own wrestling game you can't use the arrow keys for accessing the menus because its a text based game using the print function and raw_input function in Python for displaying text and handling input. I wrote it that way to run on Windows, Linux, and Mac without having to add a bunch of extra stuff like Sapi support, SDL input, blah, blah, blah just to make a quick and simple wrestling game like Piledriver or Wrestling League Simulator. I've gotten bad information myself, and I now double check my sources to make sure what I have read is correct. As for WLS what precisely is the problem? When you say it is going through the same choices again and again I'm not sure what you mean by that. Typically in Dos applications all you have to do is enter the number of the option followed by enter and it switches to the next text prompt. The only thing I can assume by your statement that you are trying to use your arrow keys or something which doesn't work in Dos style menus. You have to actually enter the number or letter associated with the menu choice followed by enter rather than arrowing to it as in modern Windows programs. Well, the Internet is a great resource, but there is likely as much bad information floating around as good information too. You aren't the only one to get bitten on the but by poorly researched or bad information posted to the net. If that isn't your problem give me more details and I'll help you resolve it because WLS is a great game. [Audyssey] wrestling game weirdness
Hi Tom, I have a win7 32 bit. So I gave it another shot with WLS. What I get is a continual run thru of the options. They are like 1 thru 11, and it just keeps repeating over and over again. Is that normal? Do I need to do something else to make it stop it? I have pressed the numbers, hit space, enter, nothing works. I tried it with NVDA and I get the same thing. Re: [Audyssey] command prompt and wrestling
Hey, Well, I usually try to find the answer on the internet. So I looked for starting dos programs using command prompt and that was the answer I got in one of the sites. Some of the DOSBox pages I found seemed to indicate that some screen readers were able to use it, but againk, the internet did it to me again. So I apologize for that. I really don't know all that much, so that is what I end up doing. Bites me on the backside sometimes, grin. Now that is good news. I am sorry your going thru some bad health issues, but man, I really appreciate the effort. On a side note, I did get it going, but for some reason it kept going thru the choices over and over again. I think it was WLS I tried. Really weird. I will just wait for yours though. When running Dos programs there is no start command. Not sure where you got that idea, but if it is a standard executable just typing the program name will launch it. For example, if piledriver was in c:\pd49 you would type c:\pd49\pd49 and the program would run. That's all there is to it. However, on XP you don't have to even run the Command Prompt directly. Just opening Windows Explorer, pressing enter on pd49.exe, will automatically run the program in the Command Prompt. So that saves you from having to know any console commands which would be a good idea to learn anyway if you plan to play very many Dos games etc. As far as playing some wrestling games I am working on my own wrestling game, and hopefully I will have something available in the not too distant future. I have decided to start over in Python 2.7, and Pygame 1.9. So far the game runs pretty well on Linux, Windows, and I imagine will work fine on Mac OS as well if someone gets the source and compiles it. Cheers! [Audyssey] DosBox questions
Hi gang, I am trying to get DOSBox to work on my win7 machine. I started it, but what I got when it ran was two separate windows, one was called DOSBox and the other a DOSBox status screen. I couldn't seem to type into either of those. I am using jaws 14. The guy who set up the computer has a virtual xp something or other on it, and I wonder from what I have been reading is that maybe it needs to be stuck in that virtual thing somehow? Will that resolve my problem trying to type the commands into the DOSBox window? Actually, which window do I actually type in, anyway? Really, any help at all will be greatly appreciated. I wanted to try these wrestling games. Oh, and one more thing. Howt he heck do I shut down these DOSBox windows? The normal alt+F4 doesn't work, and the ctrl+alt+delete seems to bring me to something other then the task manager. I am new to win7 so be gentle please. Re: [Audyssey] FW: Details of your favourite games.
Ok, you asked for it, grin. My favorite at the moment is tactical battles. It is both a wargame and highly customizable, so that it covers any genre you want to create with it. Also, entombed is a very close second. I suspect any rpg game would be an instant favorite for me. The customization of TB inches entombed out of first place for me. I suspect I would like time of conflict, but I have to sit down and actually play it. I think I don't right now, cause I would probably get hooked on it and there isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want, lol. Other games I find myself playing more often then not are a lot of the spoonbill games, like uno, word target, battleship, etc. I also like some of Jim Kitchen's games, especially monopoly and life. I really like star trek final conflict, and I always figure out something new that makes the game more fun every time. Are you compileing a list of top ten games or something? Or is this an appeal to have programmers focus on style of games? Just curious. Well, that's about it. I was just playing a game of Wrestling League Simulator , and I have to say this text game was better than real wrestling. The Divas Championship match I had was pretty awesome. Tonight's match up was Kelly Kelly vs. Eve torres. I played Kelly Kelly and the computer controlled Eve Torres. The match was a no disqualification match for the WWE Divas Championship, and I have to say the computer put up one heck of a fight. In the beginning of the match it was pretty evenly matched. Neither performer could get an advantage as such. It was mainly Eve and Kelly Kelly exchanging kicks, punches, and occasionally slamming the other to the mat, but about 10 minutes into the match things got a lot rougher. Eve drove Kelly's face into the turn buckle, busting her head open, and I got a little angry and the gloves came off and started to play dirty. You know thumbs to the eye, pulling hair, and using choke holds etc. Basically, it went from a wrestling match into a good old bitch fight. LOL. Needless to say after about five minutes more of this we took it outside the ring where it got vicious. We took turns slamming each other onto the concrete floor, smacking each other's heads into the ring posts, smacking someone's face into the ring apron, and finally grabbing a steel chair and bashing it over each others heads. Since this was a no disqualifications match we could get away with beating the ever loving tar out of each other without being disqualified which makes no-holds-barred matches so fun. Eventually, we both climbed back into the ring for something more like real wrestling with standard wrestling moves such as slams, knee lifts, elbow drops, punches, a few slaps, and the occasional attempt at a pin. However, the end came when Eve Torres went up on top of the ropes for a springboard moonsault, the infamous Evesault, and Kelly Kelly moved out of the way for Eve to pancake onto the mat. Ouch! Let's just say she got up, still stunned, Kelly Kelly delivered the Kelly Kick and covered Eve for the 1, 2, 3. As of now in Wrestling League Simulator Kelly Kelly is the new Divas Champion. Allan, I'm glad you like the plan! :D The physical See Munkey head set should work on any version of Windows, Mac, or Linux. I have not personally tested it on very many systems but the hardware it is built with was chosen because it works on them all. If I run into any OS that it doesn't work on, I'll be sure to let people know. The software side of things will be a bit different. The key mapping program I've thrown together, called Munkey Mapper, is designed for Windows. It currently works on XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. It should also work on Windows 95 but I don't think that will be helpful to many people. Since any other developer can write their own software, I'm sure it wouldn't be long before someone would release their own mouse and keyboard mapping software for Mac or Linux. In fact, I fully expect my windows based mapping software to be replaced by one created by another developer! We have some incredibly talented programmers around here, and any one of them could put together their own mapper that has more bells and whistles than mine does, plus we all know I'm not the poster child for polishing software before releasing it! Haha! :D Basically we'll still have the same situation where some games won't work on certain operating systems, just because of the preferences of the games' designers. The See Munkey itself won't cause any of those limitations though. - Aprone --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hey guys, I spend most of my time on the audiogames.net forum, and every now and then I'm reminded that I've shared news with them but forgot to post it here as well. My apologies, people of the audyssey list! :D LOL. After my 2.9 patch for Swamp I began working on a new project. To make a long story short, I learned I was going to need to get a second job in 2 months so I wanted to make the most of them. I officially ended development on Swamp and have dedicated myself to getting some stuff accomplished in the 2 months I have left. After I get the additional job I will have a lot less time available to work on projects, so I don't know how that will impact my efforts as a game developer. The new project can actually be thought of as 2 separate, but linked, projects. My new game is going to be an RPG based in the Daytona/Castaways storyline. It will take place many years after the Daytona game, and you will learn what happened to the leader from the end of the Castaways game. The mouse hardware requirement for Swamp was a terribly unpopular move for a very very long time. Using the word unpopular may even be an understatement, ROFL! Well that battle was fought and won, and I feel the audio games community is a better place now that the mouse is an accepted tool for gaming. This opens up more options for game developers, and that is always a good thing! Well this RPG is going to follow in those foot steps and require a new piece of hardware. In a move that will go down in audio games' history as an epic mistake, or as a revolution, my RPG will require players to have a 3D head tracking headset I have named the See Munkey. (I still crack a smile when I say See Munkey out loud.) While wearing the headset in the RPG you can simply move your head around to move the head of your in-game character. This will give a more natural playing experience plus allow you to easily look up or down to get a 3D feeling of your surroundings. To determine the locations of sounds in the real world, we naturally move our heads to see how the sounds will change. This gives us far more data than we can get from being perfectly still, which is how we normally are in games. I'm trying to give players that same advantage inside of the game world. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] win7/win8 looking for help resources
Hi Gang, After reading thrut he emails, I think that in the end, Tom is correct. As much as I like XP, and enjoy my desktop and all the things I know how to do with it, I fear there is no real choice. Eventually, sooner rather then later, audio Game developers need to advance their technology, which emans we, if we wish to continue playing games, will also have to do so as well. It isn't a matter of if, but when. And when is just around the corner. So I am going to do it. I am going to upgrade, and get a 64 bit computer with the bells and whistles and tackle working with win8. So I am asking for information on or off list if people could provide useful resources for someone to learn all about how to use windows 8, and what hardware I should consider. Is a touch screen going to be useful? I use outlook express, is that windows live mail, whatever that is, a good replacement? what would people recommend for a medium to high end processor, hard drive and ram? Is there a list somewhere of games that do not work on windows 8 which still work on win xp? It just seems so overwhelming. I am assumeing nvda has no problem on win 8? I am hoping I can get jaws up to it's current version, but that is sounding like it may be problematic from what I have been reading. However, as this is a game engine, nothing to do with smart phones or phones period, I would say copyright law would come down on my side as a separate intellectual copyright as it is a different kind of product altogether. The thing you need to keep in mind is that a company or copyright holder has to prove how this supposed copyright infringement has hurt them. or can hurt them financially etc. As we are talking two completely different line of products there shouldn't be any conflict of interest. Re: [Audyssey] A Possible Offer To Consider
Hi Tom, For my two cents... I would say that many of the old games would not be worth a remake. However, why not get a more detailed opinion from the list. I am sure when people talk about wanting an old game remake, that they are thinking of maybe two or three games on average. So maybe it would help you better if you set up a top three games list, and see which three old games out of a list you make of the ones you want to work on, so that you would get a clear indication of what people might be actually talking about in terms of remakes. Like you said, you really don't want to have to do remakes of space invader like games etc and so forth. Personally, I am not much for any of the games so far listed, so no, I probably wouldn't bother donating or paying attention to the remake of such things. The exception for me is the wrestling game you talked about some weeks back. I would definitely pay to see that game come to life, and it is also a remake too, right? al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2013 6:12 PM Subject: [Audyssey] A Possible Offer To Consider --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Can a sighted person play swamp?
Hi guys, I have a friend I was talking to about audio games, and I did notice ont he swamp menu that there is an option for graphics and no graphics. Is this like full fledged sighted graphics, or are these just blocks and colors. Re: [Audyssey] Quality verses quantity of games.
I think I agree with the general consensus here, but I think Charles has an excellent point. If a developer pumps out dozens of small games, I would still want quality, so quantity is really kind of useless if the developer is unwilling to spend the time to make it good. As for time in development for a game, that is really a tough call. For instance, I make maps for tactical battles. It isn't programming or anything, but it is as good as it gets for one such as myself. I find that I can make a basic no brainer map and scenario really easy. The problem is that it would be bare bones and wouldn't be fun to play. So I spend effort and resources on all the little things that make it fun and interesting, which takes time, and sometimes doesn't come out as well in practice as in your head, so you have to start over, make allowances for updates to technology, fix things that you thought were fixed but new problems arose...heck, I can spend an entire day trying to get one little stupid thing to work right, lol. So yes, Tom is right, if a developer wants quality, it is going to take time, and probably more time then he or she really has to spend. It is the creative process that drives, I think, the person to continue that kind of thing, beyond the practical. You can get a real buzz off of making something and having it be enjoyed, but it will always take lots of time. I never understood before why programmers took so long to introduce games. Now I know and I really got a new found respect for anyone who is willing to make some major sacrifices to make a game come to life. Then again, there are times when I want a quick fun game of blackjack or a slot machine game to kill time before a meeting or before or after a doctor's appointment while waiting for a bus. Quality? Yes, even in these little games. If the blackjack dealer is very easy to beat, or the slot machine pays off on just about every spin, I don't want it. In such games, I want realistic outcome based on factual statistics or based on my making good judgment. I want the shuffling of cards to be realistic, the dealer to be smart enough to not draw if his total is 20, and so on. In a slot machine, I would want realistic wheel behavior and labels of what comes up, as well as a truly randomness. The main reason is because of races like the Borg and Dominion required newer more advanced designs that just are too powerful when looking at AKlingons, Romulans, Ferengi, and other traditional enemies. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Tom, Thanks for that, I appreciate it. When reading about the defiant and quantums, I am seeing some serious game balance issues, sigh. thanks Tom, al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Saturday, March 30, 2013 9:59 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Star Trek ship info Hi Al, As this is game related I'll allow this topic on list. Moreover since I'm an expert at this sort of thing I'll go ahead and answer your questions. Below are your questions and my answers. 1. Do quantum torpedo's work only on borg ships, how much damage do they do compared to a photon? Like double? Are shields effective against quantum's? A quantum torpedo will work on any enemy ship it is fired at. According to the Deep Space 9 technical manual the standard quantum torpedo will do 50 megawatts of damage as apposed to the standard 18 megawatts of a standard photon torpedo. So its almost three times as powerful as a standard photon. 2. what class of ship is the defiant? How does it's gatling phasers compare to a phaser shot from the enterprise D or enterprise E? The Defiant is a Defiant-Class Escort. As with U.S. Navy ships the ships in Star Trek get their class name from the first ship in that class to be built. In this case the U.S.S. Defiant was the first ship in its class to be built and placed in active service. As for the pulse phasers I couldn't find an exact amount of damage for this, but its suppose to deliver about three times the damage of a type x phaser. Since the type x on the Enterprise D does about 5.1 megawatts of shield damage per phaser it must be somewhere between 15 and 16 megawatts of power per shot.. 3. Does anyone have any trek websites with good ship break downs for the famous ships? Mostly crew sizes and clas type. I'll have to look for my old bookmarks file for Firefox, but I had a couple of websites that had copies of the Star Trek technical manuals as well as other related materials that you could read online. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate
Hi Shawn, I talked to Nina, and she said that she was only familiar with the NES version of the game. So it is entirely possible that the atari could have had diffrent content, either for keeping the game fresh, or just memory problems. Back then game consoles were no where near the memory capacity of an atari computer, so it could be that some things got cut from the NES, which would make sense. I never played the game before this adaptation, which I regret cause it seemed like it would be alot of fun. Shawn, if you could give me a link to the walkthru, or the walkthru itself, Nina said she wanted to take a look at it, and I am thinking she might want to put the content in the game you mentioned, but that is just my guess, she didn't say one way or the other. She did mention she is going to work on a zork port at some point which I think is going to be really interesting. SPOILER ALERT: Don't read further if you don't want to ruin the game. Shawn, You don't have to drop anything to use the bridge. I playtested the entire map and the bridge can't be used until you are ready to use it. Consider the inventory and objects you find, and notice anything that might seem to have a strange quality when inspected, especially when it might pertain to crossing a chasm with a rickety and dangerous bridge. Honestly, the walkthru is not doing you any favors. Play the game without it, and just work within the boundaries of the game itself, you will have alot more fun. Good luck, al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: shaun everiss To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Monday, March 11, 2013 12:30 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate
Hi Shawn, You might have wanted to put up a spoil alert or something for those who play the game, and didn't want to be given hints. That is the spoil alert for everyone reading this now in fact. If you are playing the shadow gate game and don't want hints, do not read further... Shawn, those things you mentioned were not bugs in the usual sense. There is several degrees of seperation between an atari port of a visually played nes game, and the audio version of the same game on a diffrent platform in an accessible format. There will be diffrences, and this isn't all that unusual. In the sighted world, especially with side scroller games or action games diffrent content will be snuck in for diffrent systems to keep the game fresh and to give incentive to buy the game for those diffrent consoles. For this game, I don't know. Nina might have omitted things out of forgetfulness, or it might have existed in the same way as on the atari port. Either way, those things you mentioned are not bugs. Secondly, the rope does do as you say, but you have to be a little more clever then the atari walkthru to figure it out. Use that sharp mind of yours and check out everything around you, and in your inventory, and you should be able to solve the puzzle. As for the use and select menu choices...ironically I mentioned the same exact thing to Ian a while back. I guess, for the time being, the best way to remember which does what is to think of "use" as useing it on yourself, or useing something like an unlocked door, or a bridge or even a staircase. "Select" is usually done when you want to use an item on some element in a room, like a pool, or a monster, or you want to use an item on another item, like a burning torch on an unlit torch. Lastly, yeah, the music is retro. I think it is quaint and takes me back to the nineties, lol. There is actually some shadow gate music called overclocked where people take old video game music and rock out with it, or turn it into disco, lol. http://ocremix.org/ al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: shaun everiss To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Monday, March 11, 2013 1:40 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Adventure Game Engine release withShadowgateadventure
Hi Charles, I think maybe I used IF when really I am talking about text adventures. Since I am not a big fan of either, I used the term to kind of cover it all, so sorry to all for the confusion. So, if that is the case with the cavern game, then I think a text adventure can be recreated on the game engine. Actually, I think I would love to see alot of the more popular text adventure games recreated. Especially Zork. That is one of two text adventure I remember playing. The other was on a friends computer, I think it was quest or dragon quest or maybe kings quest. [Audyssey] Brief Description of Shadow Gate
Hi Guys, For all those who might be interested, I want to give a brief description of the game, how it works, and a little about the awesome new adventure called Shadow Gate. AGE, or Adventure Game Engine, allows those with a desire, to make their own menu driven adventure games. It is free, with a simple registration process. The new update has made the game engine more user friendly for game creation. The game menu itself consists of the normal menu items like: Go, take, use, select, inspect, inventory, talk and things of that nature. Shadow Gate is about taking the role of an adventurer who is tasked to go forth and defeat an evil warlock who is attempting to summon forth a dread beast to conquer the world. It is filled with puzzles, wierd magical rooms, learning magic spells and plenty of exploration, not to mention a little humor. One of the interesting things about the adventure is that you need to keep an eye out for unlit torches. If your current burning torch starts to run out, you need to light up a fresh one, so there is an added element of danger. There is also save and load saved games so you can keep your progress thru the adventure and overall it is a real blast. All the music is from the original NES version, which is surprisingly catchy and fitting. If these type of games are something you enjoy, then give it a try. al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Help Naming a Wrestling Game
Wow, Tom, that sounds awesome! This isn't so much a suggestion as a question. Are you going to bother with tag teams? They still have tage teams, right? This is perhaps a suggestion, see what you think... What makes wrestling what it is is not just the matches themselves but the drama in between matches. So maybe, as an optional setting, one could select "drama" where between matches interesting events could happen that might or might not affect stats for a wrestler. I see it as a things like: "player's wrestler" gets attacked from behind in the back rooms! He thinks it was "next wrestler to fight". As a result he is a little less coordinated. or "During an interview, "player wrestler" got squirted in the eyes with burning hot coffee by "next challenger", He is ok, but his rage has increased to new levels of extreme danger and of course... "Players wrestler" girlfriend/lucky trunks/manager/favorite truck got stolen, and now he is distracted throwing off his focus for the upcoming belt! It wouldn't be anything too major, just adding or subtracting or even just doing nothing but entertaining so that the feel of the wrestling shows I used to watch would be there . al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Tom, That is perfectly fine with me. I just wasn't sure how it would be played since I have never played pile driver, nor heard about it till now. Sounds fun! al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Monday, March 04, 2013 2:42 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Help Naming a Wrestling Game Hi Al, The game is essentially a turn based menu driven game much like Piledriver for Dos is. In case you don't know what I mean by that here is a basic idea of how it works. You have a menu of various types of moves such as Aerial, Brawling, Dirty, Grappling, Submission, Throws, and Finishers. Let's say for example you select Brawling. A new menu of options will appear such as Big Boot, Missile Dropkick, European Uppercut, Knee Lift, and so on. You select European Uppercut and your wrestler attempts to hit the computer opponent with an uppercut. If the move is successful the opponent will be stunned or knocked down to the mat. If it fails the computer opponent will be allowed to attempt to attack you with a move of its own. This will continue back and forth until a wrestler is pinned or submits. Now, there are two reasons why I didn't create a real time fighting game like Mortal Kombat as you suggest. First, is I don't have the money to purchase a library of sound effects for every potential wrestler, for every single move, and so on. Second, is there are so many different wrestling moves that it would be impossible to program keyboard commands for every single possibility. Even if I did so it would be difficult to remember each and every possible command. So I chose to keep the same game play as Piledriver, but added some sounds and music to it as well as Sapi support. As mentioned before this game is a wrestling game written by a wrestling fan for wrestling fans and restricting certain performers would be counter productive in its intent. For example, I grew up in the 1980's and have many fond memories of Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Brett Hart, etc from the early days of their wrestling careers. Now, assuming this is a game for wrestling fans it stands to reason I should be able to pull up a list of performers I want to wrestle and have the opportunity to be able to select two classic performers like Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage and reconstruct a match from the 1980's without restrictions. It would make little to no sense at all to me to pick a performer off of the current roster like John Cena, have him wrestle x number of matches, just to unlock certain performers that I might happen to want to play. This is in my opinion exactly the kind of differences that come up between a true fan of the sport and just a gamer. Gamers are looking for something extra, some un lockable content, something extra that makes the game just another fighting game. A fan, such as myself, needs no unlockable content to make the game enjoyable and in fact might find certain restrictions get in the way of his or her enjoyment. Cheers! Basically, originally it was just going to be an updated version of Piledriver. However, as time went on the game evolved, became much better, and is moving in a direction entirely different from the original intent which is apt to happen with us crazy programmers. That's not such a bad thing. the current version is more like one of Jim Kitchen's sports games with Sapi for play by play action, pull down context menus, contains entrance music, crowd ambiance, start and ending bells, and so forth. In short, the game is no longer Piledriver per say, and is completely something new which I think needs its own title. Here is the problem. There are a number of WWE games on the market for the XBox, Play Station, PSP etc and I definitely don't want to get into entanglements over copyrights if I use a game title like WWE Raw Verses Smackdown, WWE All Stars, WWE Legends, and so forth. Generic names like Wrestling League Manager and so on just don't appeal to me. Piledriver, as mentioned above, is for all intents and purpose a different game which I don't want confused with my creation. Re: [Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update
Hi Paul, Correct, I got one in there. It is called One shot wonders/zombie house. One shot wonders is is a joke since it only uses the one zombie house map. Most campaigns feature more then one. I based the map very loosely on the old black and white romero classic, the night of the living dead. The plot is simple. Some satellite falls to earth and starts emitting wacky zombie creating radiation. Hence forth, the world is plagued by brain eating undead. You play the survivors, four pros with guns, and about eight or nine generic survivors who have to search around for items to help them fight off the zombie horde. Also there is a house in the middile of the map which can be used to hold off the horde...for a little while anyway. I hope you enjoy it. Also be sure to check out the others maps as well, on the web site are map packs that are works in progress, but feature everything from fantasy, spaceships to christmas themes. Also if you have any suggestions or thoughts or complaints about any maps I make let me know. I am always willing to make the maps I make better. al "The truth will set you free" Jesus Christ of Nazareth 33A.D. - Original Message - From: Paul Lemm To: 'Gamers Discussion list' Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 2:24 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Tactical Battles 1.12 release update
Here is a post Ian Reed put on the audissey forum for his tactical battles game: Greetings all! I'm releasing Tactical Battle 1.12. It comes with KeyWasFull's new Tomb Robber series, an updated version of his Conquering RedWall Abbey series, and an updated version of Allan Thompson's One shot wonders / Zombie House. And of course my old getting started maps and an example map demonstrating the new items and equipment feature. Some of the highlights of 1.12 have been: random damage and chance to hit, scripting, random sounds, more customizable teams, the new rounds and turns system, effects that cause initial damage or healing just as skills do, effect modifiers that apply to a specific skill rather than all skills, items and equipment, and quite a few smaller but worthwhile features. Hope you all enjoy! Remember the game is free and the mailing list is the place to be if you want to create your own maps or interact with the map creators. [Audyssey] potential customizable RPG game?
Hi all, I just wanted to say that I think this Tactical battles game is not just focused on , well, tactical battles. Don't let the name fool you. The ultimate goal is to make this game a full fledged RPG game engine. One where people, yes, even dumb as rocks people like myself, can finally express their creativeness onto an audible gaming format. I would recommend anyone who wanted to be creative in a new way, or who just wants to see what it is like to edit and customize a game for educational purposes, this may be a good time to check it out. I have been testing it thru it's update and I can help anyone if they desire to experiment. Heck, I would even build a map for you if you wanted, just to help. Well, that's it. Check it out if you got the time and the inclination. [Audyssey] Tactical Battles update announcement
Below is Ian Reed's announcement he posted int he audiogames forum... Hi all! It's been a while since my last release. I've been quite distracted with my day job and with Aprone's swamp and Dentin's Alter Aeon but now I'm refocused on Tactical Battle. I've been working hard on new features for map creators and even spent an entire week of vacation plus the surrounding weekends just working on updates to the game. There's been an email chain going on between a few map creators and myself. There are some exciting maps in the works using themes from Star wars, Star Trek, Modern military, zombie horror and RedWall Abbey. There's been a complete rewrite of the point system and I've added new damage types, structures, regions, stackable units and a new movement system to name a few. I've also created a mailing list for those who really want to be in the know. Some of the benefits of joining the mailling list are: 1 Access to developer versions of the game so you can try out map creation features without waiting for the next full version. 2 Find out about the latest features so your maps can take advantage of them. 3 Let me know which features you'd like to see implemented and help me decide how to prioritize them. 4 Access to the latest maps and the ability to give feedback to the map creators to help shape the final outcome. To subscribe to the mailing list you can use the form in the "Joining the community" section of the BlindAudioGames.com website or simply send an email to: ian-reeds-games-requ...@freelists.org with the word subscribe in the subject line. All in all this is a huge release for map creators. If you have some existing maps and need help converting them please join the mailing list or email me at supp...@blindaudiogames.com. I don't want all the new changes to stop anyone's maps from getting converted to the new system. As always you can download the latest version of the game at http://BlindAudioGames.com It includes: 1 Updated versions of my Getting Started maps. 2 A brand new Conquering Redwall Abbey map series by KeyWasFull. 3 Austen's Kingdom at war maps converted to the new system. If you find issues in Austen's maps let us know, but be forgiving. He had to do some major conversions to get them into the new system. KeyWasFull plans on adding more sounds for his maps but is suffering from a recent hard drive crash and a loss of most of his sounds. Here's the complete list of changes for Tactical Battle version 1.10: 1 names of units to be defeated in the victory conditions can now include underscores. 2 Removing the defend_enabled flag from default map flags now removes the defend skill and also no longer crashes when the AI runs. (obsolete now) 3 Added a no_self_cast flag for skills. This can be used on skills that have the friendly flag but are not meant for the caster to use on themselves. 4 Added a "fly" flag for effects so you can add an effect to a unit to allow them to fly while the effect lasts. 5 Added a remove_effects= flag on skills that works just like the effects= flag except that it removes effects rather than adding them. 6 Effects that deal end of turn damage and are applied to units rather than tiles will now cause the damage as expected. (obsolete in the old system though the new system works correctly as well) 7 Added new flags to skills that allow you to hint to the AI at how the skill should be used. The flags are ai_heal, ai_buff, ai_curse, ai_tile_curse, ai_attack, ai_defend and ai_move. 8 Fixed a bug that would crash the game if the AI used a skill that resulted in it's own death. 9 Fixed a bug where the game ignored the no_movement flag when it is on an effect applied to a passive skill. 10 Made a huge re-write to the point system. Level creators can now create their own custom points rather than being restricted to the old hard coded HP, MP, and AP. 11 In the new point system there are no hard coded skills such as move, attack and defend. These are now more customizable by the player so that you can have units who can not attack or move for instance. 12 Implemented a death flag on effects which is used in the new point system. 13 Implemented a hide_old_points flag in the map defaults file to remove all the hard coded points and abilities from a new map. (now obsolete) 14 Added the ability to set flags for a skill while in the unit file, this is primarily used to alter how much damage attack does or it's range on a per unit basis as the attack skill is now treated as a normal skill in the new point system. 15 Added a map flag called music that let's you set the music for that map. Music files can be placed in the "Music" folder of your map pack. 16 Added a skill flag called move_self which is used to support the non-hard coded move skill but can also be used to support teleportation skills. 17 Added a Default unit flags.txt file. 18 Added a new key= flag for skills that allows you to set a hot key for using that s

Re: [Audyssey] accessible virtual pets?
Wow! I just love my virtual pet rock! I am going to train mine to be a seeing eye pet rock! Then, when it gets a little older, I am going to enter it into those secret gladitorial pit fighting contests with other pet rocks and watch my pet rock crush his enemies into pebbles! If you are wondering how to train your pet rock for the horrors of life and death blood and guts combat with other pet rocks, then it is very simple. Well, got the program bought it. My first thought was"What does all these weird words mean?", lol. I am trying to read thru the manual but I am not doing to well with it. I also tried to download or just view some goldwave pod casts from that blind cool tech website but the links weren't working. Does anyone have any were else one could find stuff like that?
