Hi Chris,

Right, absolute position is completely irrelevant, and (generally) isn't
provided to the sighted player either. In fact, the graphical client is
only a data management tool, and it works solely with the data provided
in the text report--no data other than that is available to any players.

Other people on this board have expressed an interested in a Classic or
Advanced game.If I started one of these, how many people would want
to join? Of course, I don't want people to feel overwhelmed by too many

OK!

Attached is a sample text report for another game I'm involved in. This
is turn 11 in a Classic game; there are quite a few details to process
there, but it contains all of the same information that is available in
the graphical client.

I already set up a private game for one curious player who contacted me
directly. Why don't we do that again, we can have a private game for
all the possibly-interested people on this list, just to try out the
rules and see how the game works. I can set up a Core game, which is
usually a better choice for a beginner because the rules are a bit simpler.

Re: [Audyssey] RSW strategy game

2011-01-29 Thread David Rose

Hi Dark,

Yes, the graphical map available to sighted players is the biggest
potential barrier.

Now, in the heyday of the play-by-mail games that RSW is inspired from,
there was no such thing as a graphical map for anyone, and all players
had to make their own maps out by hand, or go without.

Nowadays, users expect computers to manage tasks like this for them; and
it's true that the graphical RSW client does make map-making quite
straightforward for the sighted user. A visually-impaired player,
without the advantage of this graphical tool, will have to make a map by
hand (I think a spreadsheet tool would be adequate for this task). But
it is a fair amount of work to do this.

So, there is an imbalance in the amount of effort that the
visually-impaired player will have to put in, versus a sighted player.

I've been thinking about this problem over the past couple of days. The
current RSW client is not really well-suited for a screen reader. But I
think I can, without too much effort, make a new version of the RSW
client that is designed from the ground up with a screen reader in mind;
and this tool can restore the advantage of effort.

As our practice game progresses, perhaps you (and any other interested
players) can provide suggestions for the most effective ways to navigate
the map by voice prompts. I will also investigate these other games you
suggest.

Thanks!
David

Hi Shiny Protector,

This game is a space battle. Players compete with each other for
ownership of worlds and their resources which they use to build ships
and fleets. It's a fairly straightforward (if complex) strategy game,
along the same lines as Risk or similar board games, but it is played
over several days or weeks on the internet.

The game requires skill with diplomacy and negotiation, and/or with
battle tactics and maneuvering, but has very little to do with
philosophy. And I'm not sure what RS refers to.

I think my earlier response to your message must have gotten lost--my
responses to other people on this list have finally shown up, but not
this one. Odd. Maybe I replied using the wrong email address. Well,
here it is again.

Great, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience! The
complete game rules are available online via HTML, or as a downloadable
PDF file--is one of these forms easier to read than the other? It
occurs to me now that neither form is available via the email interface,
but I could correct this. I could also provide it as a single one-page
HTML file, and I could probably convert it to plain text as well.

As to how I came to this list, well, I did seek it out. I was listing
the features of RSW that make it uniquely different from all of the
other free games on the web, and one of them that came to mind was its
(at least theoretical) accessibility due to its nature.

[Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

2011-01-28 Thread David Rose

Hi folks,

My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed to
death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the
archives.

At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I
couldn't test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then I
realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice!
I've been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a
number of minor issues that I'll be correcting.

But I'd hate to fine-tune my pages to VoiceOver's quirks only, without
knowing about similar quirks in other software. In particular, what do
Windows users typically use to browse the web? I see that Narrator is
built-in to Windows, but it's almost unusable. Even Narrator itself
recommends users buy a third-party program instead.

So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose
of testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program
should it be?

Thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?

Thanks for the advice, everyone! NVDA and System Access are workable,
but clumsy. JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in usability,
but it's incredibly expensive (you could buy a new computer for less).
Of course, I can use it in the free demo mode for my purposes, but do
people really spend so much on JAWS?

I guess the most important question is, what software do people actually
use? I see after a quick inspection that all of these options read my
webpages slightly differently. I don't want to waste time making it
work well with a program that no one uses.

Thanks,

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I apologize for setting off a

I will continue to test with NVDA and back it up with an occasional
check with JAWS and Window-Eyes on the PC, and VoiceOver on Mac.

(The accessibility guidelines are useful, and of course I have been
following them; but it's still important to know how actual
implementations respond to webpages in practice. It's the same reason a
web developer should always test his page on several different browsers.)

[Audyssey] RSW strategy game

2011-01-26 Thread David Rose

Greetings gamers,

I'm the developer of RSW, an independent multiplayer strategy game.
It's an homage to the classic play-by-mail games of the 1970's and
1980's, and it can still be played exactly as those games were played
(though by email instead of postal mail). I develop this game in my
free time, just because it makes me happy to do so.

Although it wasn't specifically designed for the visually impaired, the
fact that it retains the classic text-based interface makes it perfectly
suited to allow visually-impaired players to compete equally with the
sighted. (There is also a modern graphical client for those who prefer
accessing the game in that way, but the game is fully functional via
old-school turn reports and order sheets.)

As a game, RSW isn't for everyone, but for detail-oriented people it can
be very thrilling. It's turn-based, with turn times highly configurable
and typically ranging from three to seven days per turn. Successful
gameplay involves a lot of communication with other players; diplomacy
and interaction are very important elements of the game (though there
are also game variants that eliminate this communication).

The game population is fairly small right now--about 10-20 active
players--but I'm trying to spread the word and grow the player base,
which will hopefully lead to more exciting games for everyone. If you
think you might be interested, I'd love for you to check it out! Also,
I'd love to know if there are problems accessing the website or the
email interface.

You can visit the website at http://rswgame.com , or if you prefer using
email, send an email message with just the word hello in the body of
the message (not the subject) to r...@rswgame.com .

Thanks!
