I remember one of those hard tracks. I was hauling oil on a 15 mile stretch to
a small station.
Passed 2 other stations, and had to adjust my speed quite a bit.
Adjusted to 15 coming uphil into a station, to 40 as I left, and then to 30 in
a steep downhil portion.

Re: [Audyssey] Partially Accessible Train Sim found

2009-08-13 Thread Harun
I was told to get in contact with someone.
I'd like to ask to be added to the list and dropbox for the project.
As to another comment, NO you cannot race trains.
I think there will be a system to work out regarding speed limits in upcomning
blocks of track.
For example, say you're going 80mph, coming towards a 40mph limit (entering
station limits) with 2 miles to go.
Or, you're at 15, and get clearance up to 40 as you leave the station. I'll see
if I can find some math to crunch.
On a sidenote, might the system include an ATO feature for new drivers?

Re: [Audyssey] Partially Accessible Train Sim found

2009-08-12 Thread Harun
I thought the same until I found myself engulfed for an hour on night, just
reading about train signals and RTC (Rail Traffic Controllers, like ATC for
aviation).
It involves skill. You've got a timetable to keep to, along with signs and
speed limits to obey.
We just need to find a way to get these variables accessible. Obviously when
you've got a timetable or a speed limit, the program is reading this data from
somewhere.
Hopefully we might find someone who could program a way for the SAPI interface
in windows to read these variables when they change. That's my main guess as to
accessibility.
The main menu is partially accessible already, and I can translate the train
and location descriptions into English if they're in Japanese.

Re: [Audyssey] Partially Accessible Train Sim found

2009-08-07 Thread Harun
Good news. I've done some poking around an I've found an open-source Train Sim.
It's called Open BVE. The main menu is the most accessible of the Train Sims
I've tried.
Here's my rundown. Keep in mind this is days old in my head, so it hasn't been
fleshed out much.

OpenBVE: Main Menu partially accessible. There's a radio button with Start new
game, Review last game, Controls, and Options that I can't get to with
NVDA.
MSTS (Microsoft Train Simulator): Main menu not accessible.
Railworks: Main menu not accessible.
Trainz 2009: Main menu not accessible.

Download site:
http://openbve.trainsimcentral.co.uk/common/openbve_stable.zip

Dependencies:
http://openbve.trainsimcentral.co.uk/use/download_windows.html
-Follow this! Took me a few hours of tinkering to finally get it to work. Maybe
I can ZIP a working copy for others.

Youtube vid with audio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLhUXfKGt-Y
-Sounds quite good for freeware!

Since OpenBVE is open-source, we might be able to ask the developers to add
sounds to actions (brakes release, brakes applied, etc)
and indicators for variables (speed, block speed limit, next block speed,
signal status, etc etc)
I've used an old program, FS2002FA, to issue voice commands to the sim, and
it seems to work great. Increase throttle, Emergency brake, and so on.

I'll try to make an audio demo next week after my hellish gov't final is done.

Let's hope this can be made a reality!

[Audyssey] Radar Contact: TTS Voices as ATC

Ahoy!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/319l6j

I've just made a test for adding TTS Voices as ATC controllers, and the first
test (Scansoft Tom) worked great.
I'm looking for other people who could handle the CPU workload of converting
the script files (around 1400 txt files) into mp3, and then process them with
other TTS Voices.
I've used: Textaloud for converting TXT to mp3. And Goldwave for snipping the
silence, converting to unsigned PCM WAV, and normalizing.
Each voice is about 10MB to download when finished.

I'm hoping that we can get different voices with different accents.

Anyone interested?

[Audyssey] BPP Tutorial: How to connect to (or observe) Fly-ins with Teamspeak

2009-07-10 Thread Harun
How to connect to (or observe) BPP Fly-ins with Teamspeak

by Harun

Part 1. Obtaining Teamspeak
Part 2. Setting up Teamspeak
Part 3. Connecting to Teamspeak server

Links:
Teamspeak: http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads

So, you've heard about an upcoming Fly-in for the BPP and you'd like to listen
in? Or perhaps you'd like to get in a plane and practice your ATC lingo and ask
questions before heading on VATSIM? Either way, the ATC comms with Teamspeak
give everyone a better sense of flying realism.

Note: DO NOT SHARE IP ADRESS ON THE LIST. This is a personal rule, for security
reasons. If you need it you can email me, or Skype me.

===
Part 1: Downloading Teamspeak

We use Teamspeak to connect for voice communication in ATC sessions.

1. Goto http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads
2. Download Teamspeak
3. Install Teamspeak.

===
Part 2: Configuring Teamspeak.

1. Select Settings, then Sound Input Settings.
2. Tab down to Voice Send Method.
3. Choose Push to talk.
4. Select the Set button.
5. Press a key on the keyboard that you want to use for communication. (I use
Left Control.)
6. Select Close.

===
Part 3: Connecting to Teamspeak Server.

1. When an event is scheduled, contact the coordinator to obtain the IP address
for the voice comms.
2. Go into Teamspeak.
3. Select Connection, Quick Connect.
4. In the Server Address box, enter the IP you were given.
5. Enter your nickname.
5A. If you are flying, enter your call sign Example, LM4 (Landmark 4) or SWA91
(Southwest 91).
5B. If you are just observing, please write OBS_ (OBS underscore) before your
name. Example, OBS_Harun.
6. Press Connect. Don't worry about login name or password.

===

A few friendly notes.
1. If you are observing, do not chatter. Use Skype or MSN. Leave the comms open
for the pilots and ATC. It's fine to ask questions, though.
2. Be aware that session audio may be recorded. I like to keep an archive of my
performance. If you'd like a copy of the session, contact me.
3. DO NOT SHARE IP ADRESS ON THE LIST. This is a personal rule, for security
reasons. If you need it, you can email me, or Skype me.

[Audyssey] BPP Tutorial: Setting up Real-World Routes for use on VATSIM

2009-07-08 Thread Harun
Blind Pilot's Project Tutorial

Setting up Real-World Routes for use on VATSIM
By Harun

I am using NVDA, so JFW output may be different.

We want our flights to be a realistic as possible, so we will be using real
world pilot routes.

There are TWO methods to use. The first will be checking SIMROUTES to see if
any routes already exist. If they do exist, then you can download the flight
plan in FS9 format and Squawkbox format, ready to go.
The second method involves looking into real world flight data, and using a
flight plan to put it into SIMROUTES.

We will be using two websites to setup these routes.

SimRoutes:
http://www.simroutes.com/

Flightaware IFR Route Analyzer:
http://flightaware.com/statistics/ifr-route/

===
Method 1: Finding a route from SIMROUTES.

Tab around until you find the 'help' link. Then tab once. You will enter an
edit box. This is the departure ICAO entry box. Enter KSJC. Tab again to find
the destination ICAO entry box. Enter KLAX. Activate the 'Find Plans' button.

If plans are available, there will be a table under the 'Find Plans' button. It
will have the Origin, Route, Destination, Distance in Miles (NM), Type (Low
altitude or High altitude airways), and Comments.

Let's choose the second route. Notice that the 'Route' (SJC9 AVE SADDE6) is
clickable. That is what we want.

KSJC SJC9 AVE SADDE6 KLAX 287 HI For turbojet aircraft.

Analysis:
KSJC-KLAX via SJC9 Sid, then AVE transition from SADDE6 STAR into KLAX. It is a
HI altitude airway route, and a distance of 287 miles.

On the next screen, you will be provided a TON of information. Tab down until
you hear something like Boeing 747-400 Domestic no winglets. This is the
aircraft list. Select your aircraft. This is important, because it tells the
ATC your max TAS and VS limits.
Tab again to hear your aircraft's TAS (B74D is 505). Tab across the file
online button, do not press it.
Tab once again and you will hear a list like 747PIC. This is the export
selection list. We want to export to FS9 and Squawkbox (if flying online)
formats. For FS9, select FS2004 FS9 (3 of 11). For Squawkbox, select
Squawkbox 3 (9 of 11).
Tab one last time and you will hear the Download flight plan button. Press
it, and you will be given a download screen. This contains the file you want to
use.
If you are in VISTA, you want to place this file in your My Flights folder.
Mine would be C:\Users\Harun\Documents\Flight Simulator Files

If you are in XP, then it is in your My documents folder.
===
Method 2: Finding a route from Flightaware and inputting it into SIMROUTES.

1. Find the text Need to find a flight? Then tab once. You will enter an edit
box. This is the departure ICAO entry box. Enter KSJC. Tab again to find the
destination ICAO entry box. Enter KLAX. Tab again and activate the Find
Flights! button.
2. Find the Route Analysis Summary table. Tab down or use the arrow keys. You
will find five columns.

Frequency - The number of pilots who chose this route to fly. (Guess)
Origin - The Origination airport in ICAO format.
Destination - The Destination airport in ICAO format.
Altitude - The altitude that was flown, in thousands of feet.
Full Route - The route, including SID and STAR that was used.

Let's analyze this route. I have selected the first line of the table.

12 KSJC KLAX 41000 SJC9 MOONY AVE SADDE6

Frequency - 12
Origin - KSJC
Destination - KLAX
Altitude - 41000
Full Route - SJC9 MOONY AVE SADDE6

Copy the Full Route information to the clipboard.

This route tells us that we will be taking off from KSJC. We will be using the
SJC9 SID with the MOONY transition. We will climb to 41000 feet. Finally, we
will take the AVE transition into the SADDE6 STAR.

We can see the flight strip like this:
KSJC SJC9.MOONY AVE.SADDE6 KLAX
Notice the period in the SID and STAR. It connects the SID/STAR and the
transition. If it is a SID, we see SID.TRANSITION . If it is a STAR, we see
TRANSITION.STAR .

Here is a verbose-ish depiction of the flight strip.
KSJC (space) SJC9 SID (period) MOONY transition (space) AVE transition (period)
SADDE6 STAR (space) KLAX

Now, let's go to SIMROUTES to enter the data and get our flight plan.

When you are at SIMROUTES, shift-tab backwards to find Generate Routes. Here
we find six fields. Departure Edit box. SID (don't bother). Route (where we
place our flight strip). Arrival (destination airport). STAR (don't bother).

So, through the six fields, we would enter:
KSJC for destination ICAO.
TAB over the SID.
Enter our flight strip into the ROUTE edit box (SJC9 MOONY AVE SADDE6)
KLAX for arrival ICAO.
TAB over the STAR.
Press Generate Route.

On the next screen, you'll be provided a TON of information. Tab down until you
hear something like Boeing 747-400 Domestic no winglets. This is the aircraft
list. Select your aircraft. This is important, because it tells the ATC your
max TAS and VS limits.
Tab again

Re: [Audyssey] BPP Tutorial: Setting up Real-World Routes for use on VATSIM

2009-07-08 Thread Harun
Oops, I've made a mistake in method 2.

Our flight strip route looks like:
KSJC SJC9.MOONY AVE.SADDE6 KLAX

You DO need to enter the SID and STAR into the edit boxes on the Generate
Routes page.

After you enter KSJC into the departure ICAO, tab and search for the
SID.TRANSITION you're looking for. In this case, it's SJC9.MOONY .
You can leave the ROUTE field blank if you'd like.
For the STAR, enter the TRANSITION.STAR you're looking for. In this case, it's
AVE.SADDE6 .

Then, hit 'generate route'.

Sorry for the mixup.

Cheers,

[Audyssey] BPP: Looking for ATC Fodder

2009-07-05 Thread Harun
Ahoy.

I've decided to start learning ATC, so I can become a controller on VATSIM.
(I'm low partial.)
However, since I'm not certified yet, I'll need practice outside the training
simulator I use.

You can connect via FS2004, and I can practice giving departure and approach
clearances.

Does anyone know of an accessible online service that we could use to write and

Hey, Zack.

FSNav does support ILS Approach mode, but I've watched a plane land itself on a
full visual approach.
When you set an autoroute to a visual airport, the program does some math to
figure out the correct altitudes and descent rates.

[Audyssey] Blind Pilots Project: Radar Contact

2009-06-27 Thread Harun
Overview of RC: http://www.sendspace.com/file/4933z1

Just a few words of note for anyone who's going to try using IYP and Radar
Contact.

-Descents in 747-400 seem to max out the Vertical Speed at -2400 feet per
minute, no matter how small the incriments. You can set the vertical speed. You
can say Set vertical speed to 1800, to set the VS to -1800 feet per minute.
The 737-400 doesn't have this problem, to my knowledge.
-If you've got the 'weather' option set in RC settings for HOLDING, then you
may be asked to do a few laps, until traffic clears up or weather inproves.
When ATC gives clearance to proceed, switch GPS switch on, and turn NAV mode
on. If the controller tells you to descent in 1,000 feet incriments, this may
be an indication that you're coming in for a visual approach... I'm trying to
figure out a way around this.
