Hi,
Well, Spanker is fun. It is based off a Bop It style of play where you
use the arrow keys to swing left, right, and center. Girls will say Hi
and you try to spank their butts asfast as you can by swinging towards
the sound of their voice.

Hi,
I except that as a challenge. I'll have to get into the adult word list
and see how high I score. How many words do I have to do. Is that 10 out
of 10?

Jim Kitchen wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

Hmmm, I will have to see if I can get seventy percent on hangman. I normally
get 100 percent, but that is only because I most often play with the adult

 list. grin

in to playing hangman allot. I am not a great speller, but I have always
had a bit of a knack of solving those kind of word puzzles.
Yesterday I got 7 out of 10 words correct in hangman. Pretty good odds.
That is a 70% accuracy. Sometimes if I am altogether with the program I

Hi Blind Guy,

Uhm Mach 1, Pong, Bop It and the recorded speech Golf game were before I
started with sapi5 and came up with the idea for the game menu and single
Kitchensinc folder idea. And I think that it was Thomas that mentioned that
with sapi5 the game menu program has the ability to speak the names of the new
games. With recorded speech I would have had to come up with some way for the
game menu program to recognize and speak a new recorded game name sound file.

Hi Damien,

If you mean the Trucker code it is pretty cryptic, but I had looked at it way
back when I first added sounds to it. To turn it into VB6 code pretty much all
I did was to look for and change the print statements to the call to my speech
sub routines. For the most part GWBasic code will run in BB6. Well maybe I
should say that Quick Basic code will run in VB6 as I had converted the Trucker
game from GWBasic to Quick Basic when I added the sounds. But I don't remember
having to do much to it to make that conversion either.

Hi,
There aren't any roads in Ohio that have no speed limits, but I have
heard there are a few places in the USA where there are no posted speed
limits. I'd have to look it up, but I think it was Montana which had
some areas where you could put the pettle to the metal and not have to
worry about a speed limit.
Also as I did mention in an earlier post though the US Interstate
project came from the idea of the Autobahn, but unlike the Autobahn they
were given speed limits.

 Hi Tristan,

Wow I have produced 69 files between dos and windows eh? And then count
in all of the different versions and it sounds like I have been a bit busy
 these last 17 years. grin

 Thanks for the count.

 Hi Damien,

If you mean the Trucker code it is pretty cryptic, but I had looked at it
way back when I first added sounds to it. To turn it into VB6 code pretty
much all I did was to look for and change the print statements to the call
to my speech sub routines. For the most part GWBasic code will run in
BB6. Well maybe I should say that Quick Basic code will run in VB6 as I
had converted the Trucker game from GWBasic to Quick Basic when I added
the sounds. But I don't remember having to do much to it to make that
 conversion either.

 Hi Davy,

Thank you much for the suggestions, but I have purchased the program that
creates the self extracting WinZip files, so that is what I am going to
use. Plus it is so easy for the end user I E just press enter and the new
game (it's files) are extracted to the Kitchensinc folder by default.

BTW zip files have been the standard for a very long time. You know first
PKZip and now WinZip. Don't know of anyone who has had any trouble with
them ever. Heck Windows even ships with a WinZip program.

Still, compressing an executable will not always result in anything good.
I.E. try to pack an executable with WinRAR. You'd just save a few kB or
 so.
So if you really want to save space, use a packer for portable executables
like PECompact (DanZ Games did so), UPX or Shrinker.

Do files get embarassed being unZIPped ?

 Hi Tyler,
The speed limits change depending on location. For example, here in down
town it is 25 MPH. Out on the freeway it is 55. On the interstate it is
 65.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-08 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Tyler,

Thank you very much for saying that you like my game menu system, the trucker
game etc. I appreciate it very much.

To tell you the truth I did not write the original Trucker game or the original
Golf game. All of my other games I did write totally from scratch, but the
Trucker and Golf games I found the source code and added sounds to them etc.
When the Trucker game was written all highway speed limits in the U. S. were 55
mph. Allot of them have now been raised back up to 65 or even 70. But since I
did not write the original Trucker game I am not sure I want to go into it and
make changes like that to it. It is set that 55 will give you the best gas
mileage etc. I just have a feeling that I would mess it all up if I tried to
find and make changes to some of that code.

Anyway, thanks again and BFN

Hi Tyler,
Freeways tend to be state roads like State Rout 30, State Route 83, etc.
Interstates is the United States version of the Autobond. They are four
line highways that run across the entire United States from end to end.
In fact, General Eisenhower personally comitioned the Interstate project
after seeing the Autobond when he led US forces into Natzi Germany in
1944. When he became president in the 1950's he imagined the idea of
taking the Autobond, and making several of them all over the United
States. A few years later it happened.
Now, that is your history lesson for today. (Grin)

Hi,
That's easy to figure out. Every time Jim added a new game he'd have to
record it's name and update the winkit file. This way the game will
automatically detect the new game, and since Sapi is a real synth it is
flexable enough to say something without having to be recorded in advance.

Hi Davy,

Thank you much for the suggestions, but I have purchased the program that
creates the self extracting WinZip files, so that is what I am going to use.
Plus it is so easy for the end user I E just press enter and the new game (it's
files) are extracted to the Kitchensinc folder by default.

BTW zip files have been the standard for a very long time. You know first
PKZip and now WinZip. Don't know of anyone who has had any trouble with them
ever. Heck Windows even ships with a WinZip program.

Still, compressing an executable will not always result in anything good.
I.E. try to pack an executable with WinRAR. You'd just save a few kB or so.
So if you really want to save space, use a packer for portable executables

I'm just sorry I didn't try it earlier.

Hi Jim,
Yeah, the installation is very quick and simple. Especially, when you
are in the process of a full reinstall of everything.
A couple of days ago after reinstalling Vista I disabled the Vista User
Account Control, which is the reason the self extracting files fail to
install under Vista, installed winkit, and then I just pressed enter on
each file pressed enter unzip and in under a minute every thing was
installed. Then, turned User Account Control back on.

 Hi,

I love the menu system, too. - its great you can just quit a game and go
back to another one without engaging your screen reader. I also love the
fact I've got more sapi 5 voices, including scansoft daniel, tom, karrin,
lee, and Jill. I'd also like to say that I love your trucker game- its too
bad someone couldn't actually make an game where you had to drive the
 truck
itself- making all the turns, shifting the gears (imho this would be so
 much
fun), making different engine sounds for each truc k (a peeterbilt would
sound different than a mack) etc etc. Nevertheless, this game is totally
cool in its realism- I bet things like that happen daily, although I think
 I
would've upped the speed limmit to 60 (isn't that the legal one in the
 us)?
I live in canada, and its 100 km/h here (60 mph), but you can get away
 with
 110 km/h.

Sorry if I'm ranting on, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Hi Nicol,
I do understand your position, but there is a couple of flaws in your
position. First, most of the blind gamers out there do have some sort of
screen access solution like a screen reader or screen magnifyer. Second,
by default Winkit doesn't make a icon that I am aware of. So you have to
browse to the Kitchensinc folder anyway to launch it, or make your own icon.

Hi Jim,
Well, about saving space using a self extractor program verses a full
blown installation it really depends on the installation wizard you use.
For example, Microsoft's Setup Installation wizard, msi, is bloated and
you don't really seam to save much space when packing your game files
using it.. However, Inno Setup 5 has a feature that will allow you to
compress as you pack the files which acts not only as an installation
wizard, but as it packs them it uses similar compression methods as self
extractor, and does save loads of space.
I don't have a comparison between self extractor and Inno's compression
methods, but I can say Inno's compression is typically quite exceptable
for most developers and is widely regarded as pretty good.
Anyway, I've got allot of nice updates to my Vista compatibility chart
including some work arounds for playing the BSC games under Vista which
allot of user's will want to read.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

By the way, just a question here. Why did you decide to make your own

I'm truly interested as to why you felt going the way you did was better

Hi Thomas,

As I told you on Monday

Thomas I would also like to say that my winkit.zip file contains the files
Setup.exe, Setup.lst and Gamemenu.cab. It is an actual Microsoft Visual Basic
6 install program and thus puts the files where they belong. I E the library
files in c:\windows\system32.

I guess that it is actually called the Microsoft Visual Studio 6 package
Deployment Wizard. But yes I guess that I did miss the create an Icon part of
it. But I have helped a heck of allot of people make a desk top icon to the
gamemenu.exe file and a heck of allot of others knew to do that on their own
which means that from one icon you have access to all of my games through the
game menu program.

As far as my games not being 100 percent independent games, no they are not 100
percent. You must start with the WinKit.zip and life and then install all or
any of the other games that you want.

Like it says on my web site

winkit.zip 2.4m bytes May 2003
contains a game menu system and the board game of life
Please install the winkit.zip file before installing any of the below games.

Yeah Thomas, you know what they say about assuming. And I think that is very
true if you assume that I do my games in anything near a standard way. Heck
they are not even a product, they are my sharable accessible game creations.
You know like my life love hobby. Well they have only been in accessible form
for 17 years or so, but you know what I mean.

Hi Jim,
Yes, I was getting that error. I didn't really know what winkit did
until you explained it here on list. All I knew was that it had to be
installed, but I wasn't necessarily aware all the files had to be in the
exact same folder, or that Winkit linked all of the games together.
You see, for me I thought all of your games were individual programs
totally independant from each other. I assumed you could extract them
altogether or extract them wherever you wanted, click the *.exe file,
and begin playing. It never occurred to me you had written a custom
launcher program, and you had never intended for the games to be totally
100% independant programs.
As a developer myself I sort of assumed you were like most developers
creating each game as an individual stand alone product, and the only
reason you hadn't gotten around to an installer is that you either
didn't have one or know how to use one. So smart or dumb as I was I
assumed allot of things based on what a standard programmer would do,
and never really looked into how the games are suppose to be setup.
In any case I have copied all of the files into one folder, and they all
work fine now.
Thanks.

HI thom
Jim might have answered you already but I'm going to answer you from how I
feel.,
Uhm, the answer is actually very simple. Jim made the winkit program
especially for those blind people who doesn't have any speech software. What
if a blind person is not computer literate at all and choose not to buy a
computer but can play kitchensinc games on a friend's computer, if jim
would go for the standard install, then the blind person would have to rely
on sighted assistance to guide him to the game he wants, now he can choose
the game he wants, he doesn't tneed either sighted assistance or a screen
reader.
Or say for instance a friend gives a blind person a computer for free such
as a birthday present, to play games on. The blind person will then use
jim's winkit very handy as its self voicing, it's a self voicing list of
games he can choose from.
Basically he just need sappi installed.
I hope my approach makes sense

fall/winter release of the Audyssey mag.
By the way, just a question here. Why did you decide to make your own
custom launcher program like Winkit when it would have been probably
allot easier just to script an install with InnoSetup, and had a full
installer with custom icons, program groups, etc?
I'm truly interested as to why you felt going the way you did was better
than a standardized install.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Well, about saving space using a self extractor program verses a full
blown installation it really depends on the installation wizard you use.

 Hi Thomas,

that sounds good about the new and improved compatibility chart.

As far as my game menu goes, well it may be cheaper now, but years ago I was
paying some money for limited web site storage and band width. I thought the
extra meg or so that the install program added was an awful waste, so I
thought that putting them all in one folder with a game menu like I wrote for
my dos computer would be a good idea. Then a friend told me about the WinZip
self extractor and it all came together. It still does save a heck of allot
 of space and band width.

Hi Nicol,
I do understand your position, but there is a couple of flaws in your
position. First, most of the blind gamers out there do have some sort of
screen access solution like a screen reader or screen magnifyer. Second,
by default Winkit doesn't make a icon that I am aware of. So you have to
browse to the Kitchensinc folder anyway to launch it, or make your own icon.

Hi Thomas,

You know that my games are meant to be all installed in one (Kitchensinc)
folder. The winkit.zip file installs a GameMenu program that lists and
launches all of my games. When each game exits it wants to go back to the
GameMenu program. I imagine that you are getting an error when exiting my
games if they are all in separate folders because they can not find the
GameMenu program.

Hi Jim,
No problem. I'm aware of what needs to be installed to the System32
directory so I'll simply install the libs I need there, and run the
games according to the way I like installing them.
However, officially for the Vista compatibility chart I'll update it to
reflect the installation of Winkit.

Hi Jim,
Yeah, I used winkit, and that wasn't the problem I encountered here.
I've been a user of your games for a number of years, and so I know how
to install your games. Smile

Thomas I would also like to say that my winkit.zip file contains the files
Setup.exe, Setup.lst and Gamemenu.cab. It is an actual Microsoft Visual Basic
6 install program and thus puts the files where they belong. I E the library
files in c:\windows\system32.

- Original Message -
Hi Jim and all,
First, my apologies for any confusion I have made here regarding any
compatibility with Jim's games and Vista. Now, I shall explain how this
confusion came about just so everyone knows where I am coming from.
Generally speaking the DirectX 8 VB libs as well as the Visual Basic 6
runtime libs should be located in the end users
c:\Windows\System32
directory which is per a standard install.
So I got in to the habit of installing all of my games in a separate
folder like
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Golf
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Monopoly
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc\Life
and so on. This made the Kitchens Inc folder allot neater, and I
couldn't stand seeing all of his game files just dumped into one
directory. I have a need on my computer to organise everything, and go
nuts when files are not organised and put in some kind of order, and I
always impose order on my files. Thus the separation between Jim's games
and files.
Anyway, to make a long story short since I did not install Winkit I did
not have all the necesary files for those games to run properly under
Vista, and and so copied the necessary files to my
c:\Windows\System32
directory which is really how this should be done which worked.
Jim is correct in that if you install Winkit first, and install
everything to one folder the games will work under Vista as Winkit
contains those missing files, but at the time I wrote my compatibility
chart I did not know this since I was in the habbit of not installing
it. Winkit under XP was a unnecessary package as far as I could see.
Though, now that I am made aware of my error I will of course update my
compatibility chart to reflect both styles of installation. Jim's
official install, and my customised one.
Cheers.

Hi Willem,
Honestly, I am a bit of a neet freek when it comes to my computer and
files. For example, take the Windows start menu. If you install
everything to the default location your start menu will eventually
become an unsorted mess with 40 or 50 pull down menus.
Ok, in my start menu I have all of my pull down menus organised to
catagory like
under the start menu home and office catagory
I have quicken, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc...
Then, under the start menu Programming and Development catagory I have
Visual Studio, Python, DirectX SDK, .Net SDK, etc...
Anyway, when installing I like to have all of my programs installed in
the Program Files directory under company and then organised by product.
Do I need to do these things. No, but it certainly makes files and menus
easier to fine, and everything is sorted so someone can find what they
want very easily.

I just wish that I could get to grips with .net, and I wish that Vista
wasn't such a huge pain in the backside. If it wasn't for the fact that IE7
is buggy with FTP sites, .net isn't all that accessible, too many
restrictions with Vista, including no WaveOutMix, the menus were different,
and that some of the games I play everyday can't be played on Vista, I'd
probably upgrade now, since I've heard it's got better SAPI voices, better
cd writing capabilities, better DVD playing accessibility features, etc,
etc. I mean, the fact that you have to be administrator to install things,
and not just an administrative user. I think that's going way too far, and
the parental control filtering stuff.

 Hi Jim,
Ah, I see. Yes, for XP users that is definately the case. Though, if I
upgrade to .Net 3.0 the .Net extra installation isn't necessary since
.Net 3.0 is a core part of Vista.
Which is really one of the main reasons I picked .Net as my platform.
The .Net Framework is being included as a core part of Microsoft's new
technologies, Windows Vista, Windows CE 6, and so on, and it's becoming
the new standard for application development for Windows.
Right now XP is the main Windows OS out there, and because it is older
these dependancies I am using need to be added. However, in a couple of
years or so when Vista is more widely used requiring to download and
install the dependancies won't be as big a deal since theywill be
 already included in the OS.

The needing to be a root user is just bring windows into line with linux.
THe speech recognition is also aparently good.
But yeah, I wouldn't touch vista.
At least not yet.
Give it a year or so and someone will have figured out how to make
vista at least semi ok.
At 11:26 a.m. 3/09/2007, you wrote:

restrictions with Vista, including no WaveOutMix, the menus were different,
and that some of the games I play everyday can't be played on Vista, I'd
probably upgrade now, since I've heard it's got better SAPI voices, better
cd writing capabilities, better DVD playing accessibility features, etc,
etc. I mean, the fact that you have to be administrator to install things,
and not just an administrative user. I think that's going way too far, and
the parental control filtering stuff.

I myself wonder how the ESP Softworks/Draconis's games work. I'm not even
sure if they'd run on vista. By the way, I was gonna say this in another

downloading it. Its only 44 percent complete. I'm backing up the file for
sure! If Ubuntu has a way to work with Direct-X, I'll let ya know. There is
that one Linux port called Lindows, now called LinSpired, that looks and
feels like Windows, I'm thinking games could be run on that one.
http://www.lindows.com
is the old address, which points to the LinSpired one. I don't know what
the newer one is. Oh and one last thing. Just like Windows, Lindows isn't
free ither.
Hmm. 698 MB download for an operating system, and I'm only at 315 mb. 45
percent as I write.
I wonder if the Kiseeno game, for example, could be imported to Ubuntu
one day.

Hi Michael,
All the libraries you need go in
c:\Windows\System32
which has been the default system directory for years now. Microsoft
hasn't changed that in the 32 byt version of Vista. In the newer 64 byt
version there is a
c:\Windows\System64
directory, but most users probably don't have this version of Vista.
As for where to get them I plan to make a nice little package for VB 6
programs so it should be easy enough to get from my web site, and install.

Hi Jim,
I'm wondering if you could include those libs with each game you
package. As you may or may not know I don't usually install win kit file
choosing to install every one of your games in there own directory.
For example,
c:\Program Files\Kitchens Inc\Golf
c:\Program Files\Kitchens Inc\Monopoly
c:\Program Files\Kitchens Inc\NFL
and so on and so on.
That could be part of my problem as everything you required for your
games are in WinKit and I have to copy those files to a system directory
or put them in every game folder.

[Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-08-31 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

Please correct me if I am wrong, but you did not have a problem with the
winkit.zip install but rather the self extracting zip files right? And as you
yourself have mentioned the end user needs not nor actually ever knows what
language a game or program is written in? Truthfully even if I switched to
VB.net I would still use the self extracting zip file method to put all of my
games in the single Kitchensinc folder to run off of my game menu program as I
do now and thus Vista users would encounter the same problem.

With your permission Thomas I would like to put up on my web site the text of
your message about how to use full administrative rights to get the self
extracting zip files to run in Vista for those who may be having problems with
it.

Thank you.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-08-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
In actuality I had two problems with your games under Vista, but there
is a pretty easy solution for both of them.
First, as you pointed out I had issues with the self extractor
installation of the game. To install your games you need to run them
using full admin rights. I have no problems with you posting my text
file where I explain how to do this. That was the main reason I wrote it
in the first place. (Smile)
Second, Vista does not come with DirectX support for Visual Basic 6
since Microsoft has already stopped supporting the technology. As a
result the DirectX com libraries for Visual Basic need to be copied from
a Windows XP system to the new Vista computer. If you run Vista as a XP
to Vista upgrade then you will have the files, but users buying a new
computer will have to copy them from the old XP computer to the Vista
computer.
Hope this helps.

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

Hi Jim,
One more note. You are right most of the time a end user doesn't need to
know the language the game is written in, but they will need to know the
dependancies required to run it.
In this case Visual Basic 6 requires allot of libraries which are going
to be canned very shortly. The DirectX 8 com libraries for Visual Basic
6 no longer ship with Vista and manually have to be copied from XP to Vista.
It is my understanding that Microsoft's future releases of Vista, like
Vista SP1, disks will no longer come prepackaged with the VB 6 runtime
environment libraries. Which is really the hole problem with using VB 6.
It is clear Microsoft is stearing VB programmers away from VB, and are
pointing them to .Net which is the new development platform for Windows
Vista, Windos CE, Windows Mobile, etc... The technology has just run
it's course, and Microsoft is attempting to draw developers away from
their older technologies, and to begin using the new MS standards.
Is it possible to get Visual Basic 6running on Vista SP1 and later?
Probably, but the end user will have to manually find and install the
libraries that are missing, and there is no garentee that Microsoft
won't change something down the road that will cause an incompatibility
or break in one of your VB 6 games.

 Hi Thomas,

Please correct me if I am wrong, but you did not have a problem with the
winkit.zip install but rather the self extracting zip files right? And as
you yourself have mentioned the end user needs not nor actually ever knows
what language a game or program is written in? Truthfully even if I switched
to VB.net I would still use the self extracting zip file method to put all of
my games in the single Kitchensinc folder to run off of my game menu program
as I do now and thus Vista users would encounter the same problem.

With your permission Thomas I would like to put up on my web site the text of
your message about how to use full administrative rights to get the self
extracting zip files to run in Vista for those who may be having problems
 with it.

 Thank you.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for permission to use your instructions to tell Vista how to run a
self extracting zip file.

My winkit.zip file includes ASYCFILT.DLL COMCAT.DLL
dx8vb.dll gamemenu.BAT gamemenu.exe kitchensinc.DDF
life.exe life.txt liferecs.txt lifesave.brf
LIFESPIN.WAV LIFESTEP.WAV LIFETTL.WAV MSVBVM60.DLL
OLEAUT32.DLL OLEPRO32.DLL readme.htmSAPI.DLL
SETUP.EXE Setup.Lst SETUP1.EXEST6UNST.EXE
STDOLE2.TLB VB6STKIT.DLL so if it becomes apparent that people need other
files, I will put them up on my site for them.

Hi Jim,
In actuality I had two problems with your games under Vista, but there
is a pretty easy solution for both of them.

Hi Jim,
Well, the dll files look good, but unfortunately I don't know which
build version those are. Tell you what I'm planning on a complete
product recovery of my laptop this week. Once I do that I will find you
the most current version of all the VB 6 libs, and you can post them on
your sight so we can insure maximum compatibility with 2000, XP, and
Vista for the time being.

Hi Jim,
Well, that at least is something i can help you with. Go to
http://www.usagames.us/requirements
and download the .Net Framework 2.0 package and latest DirectX 9.0C upgrade.
First, install .Net 2.0 and then DirectX, and you should be set to go.
Though, as I have discussed on list I am highly thinking about going
.Net 3 since that is now what XP and Vista are using primarily. However,
I am still thinking on that score.

Hi Jason,
I have found a work around to make Jim's games to work on Vista with no
compatibility issues. I have sent Jim a copy of what to do, and probably
at some point he will put it up on his site or somewhere.
I have for the most part located work arounds to get 99% of accessible
games to play under Vista. The exception to that rule is Troopenum and I
think it was Pipe I can't even start without crashing.
Just in case if anyone asks if the downloads were damaged i tested them
on my laptop which still has XP and the ran fine so there is certainly
up with Vista and Troopenum II.
