Re: [Audyssey] ok a bit of explination of starship traders

2015-06-27 Thread Travis Siegel
Actually, just for reference, this is a newer version of star trader, which is
open source, and released under the gpl. If anyone wants it, and can't find
it, let me know, and I'll put my copy up somewhere for download.
Star traders itself is a rewrite of the old bbs door game called czarwars,
which was one of the many many tradewars clones, though to be fair, I'm fairly
certain czarwars was out either slightly before, or around the same time as
tradewars, so it's not one that jumped on the tradewars success band wagon. I
have registered versions of both czarwars, and seatraders (both by the same
person, and interestingly enough, he'd also written a bbs program called
autobbs which I also registered, and even wrote a file import utility for which
had been posted on his main support board until his laptop crashed back in the
early 90s, and the whole project went away.
However, this new version is much improved over the startraders code, and a
whole lot closer to the original czarwars, though it does seem to have a few
more features, and some options czarwars did not. Also, you'll find me on
there as Panther, so if you run across some of my starbases, don't feel too bad
about being denyed access to my sectors, I'm just trying to build up a nice
safe trading route. :)
Anyway, just thought I'd help with a bit of history there.

TLR's strength is a gameplay balance that provides a platform for strategy

TLR, Starship Traders, was described by a long-time player like this: First
it seems too complicated, then too simple. Then too complicated again.

TLR suffers from a lack of human factors engineering and is even more

 that wasn't a satisfactory answer.

But we will address that in due time. Suffice it to say, TLR is confusing,
text-based, and huge. 'How huge is it?', you might be wondering? The new
version of the game supports a universe of up to four million sectors and

It will also support thousands of other players.

The typical universe is divided into 1500+ distinct galaxies and hotels,

homing device that will attach itself to you as you enter, and start
broadcasting your location to the other player that placed it there.

But back to the central question: why should you waste your time on this
game? First, a simple answer to a simple question. You probably shouldn't
play this game. But, who am I to decide? You'll have to make that decision
for yourself. Most players quit within a few minutes of logging in. They see
no appealing graphics, no music plays, and nothing makes sense to them
immediately. They move on to the next shiny thing. The first impression may
not be everything, but here it eliminates almost 90% of players.

The other 10% starts to play, tentatively. Moving to another sector by
typing a sector number, Moving and Trading and with a machine by typing C

player, just as several of the machines had. And one MiniBar reported the
name of the last player to trade there, 42 hours ago. So? Another 5% of the
would-be players wander off to some other site or go mow the lawn.

The last 5% continue to play. Some of them listen to the radio as other
players chat, occasionally using words and abbreviations that hold no
meaning. Maybe they figure out how to use the radio themselves and ask a few
questions. A few interesting things were discovered today. Perhaps half of
the remaining 5% will return tomorrow to poke around more.

Our last 2% log in again. The game is still there, their character still
where it was left. There are a different set of other players on this time.
Some have various kinds of backpacks like 'Policepack' and 'Travelpack'.
Others, however, having launched into space, are flying starships. Their
ships have names 'Battleship', 'Stealth Destroyer' and 'Hyper Cruiser'. Our
newbie hero notices that he has the words 'Camo Fannypack' in front of his
title of 'Tourist+2'. The others have titles of 'Admiral+5', 'Predator+0',
and 'Minor Tyrant+7'.

The new Tourist has quite an imagination and starts to see patterns in the
seemingly meaningless actions in the game... When he moves, his energy level
goes down. Energy is fuel that appears to be necessary to move around,
trade, among other uses. One of the numbers in 'Inventory' is the ratio of
microbots earned to fuel consumed. Further, new fuel is issued every hour.
This is a turn-based game and energy is the fuel that turns are measured in.

Kai, your point is valid, except that to my knowledge, nowhere in the
documentation as it exists did it tell me I could simply hit escape again to
return to the game. If it's operator error, it's operator error based on
lacking a piece of information. And as you and others including me have
pointed out, this becomes a great way of cheating death.

I personally think this is a case of operator error, not game error. If you
hit escape and hit enter on multiplayer, it respawns you... this has been in

since day one of multiplayer support. The fact that it respawns you without
your last saved equipment has also been there since the safe zone's
inception.

I do agree with che about a 30-second delay to keep players from cheating
out of zombie swarms, but aside from that, if you hit escape and then hit
enter to return to the game, how is that Swamp's fault? Just hit escape
again. Perhaps the Y/N prompt would be prudent, but that doesn't totally
eliminate the possibility; someone else is going to manage it and complain
about the same thing, then we'll have to make changes to accomodate that
eventuality, too.

This is tantamount to saying that you closed Word without saving a document,

and are now frustrated that you have to start over from the last time you
saved.

trying to cancel a chat, hit escape and was bounced from the game. Came
back of course, at full health, but having lost *everything I'd gained in
two hours of play.

Could you modify escape behavior so that it's null except in the safe zone?
I don't normally whine about difficulties in the game, but this one felt
unfair to me.

P.S. One of the next feature sets I would like to see is improved
coordination between players, some sort of party system. I was escorting a
beginner around, and I spent most of my time just making sure he was
somewhere near me. That was when I had the escape problem.

In the multiplayer game, it does that, but it also reverts your equipment to
the last saved (exited in safe zone) state, which bit me somewhat hard this
afternoon. Yes, my carelessness, but this is one place where my

fail to react speedily enough to get the appropriate weapon for crowd
control in place, then kill me with my blessing. This is just too easy to

P.S. I would be cautious about allowing exit and return with full health

situation.

Actually I'm also not sure how pressing escape got you out of the game. You
should have had to arrow to exit game and press enter. Pressing escape
should just bounce you back and forth between the game and the main menu

 Hi there.
I've been out of the loop for a while but it was my

that escape just pauses the game and brings you back to the

maybe it should ask are you sure you want to quick and then

2011-12-10 Thread Dakotah Rickard
No. You just lose it if you hit multiplayer again. I think there is a
simple solution.

You hit escape. It takes you to the main menu. you hit multiplayer,
and it says something like: Connection already in progress. Reconnec
t? And it's a yes/no prompt. If you do get into the main menu again,
just hit escape again. That's not so clearly explained, and it may be
that some people thought you couldn't just return to the game like
that...

2011-12-10 Thread Kai

This is tantamount to saying that you closed Word without saving a document,
and are now frustrated that you have to start over from the last time you
saved.

Re: [Audyssey] Ok, escape has *got* to be changed.

2011-12-10 Thread Dakotah Rickard
I think it's a little different, for me at least. Now, I need to do
something for my mouse sensativity, I hit main menu key, scroll to
that, and whammo. I'm good. I hit escape and keep playing.

The only trouble is this. One menu in the game seems to effect every
other menu's position memory. I got stuff from the safe zone, went
out, and wanted to change my mouse sensativity again. I hit escape and
enter, because that's where I was positioned in the menu. I heard,
Connecting... and I was confused. I lost not much rep, but what had
happened is that my menu position had reset itself. Yes, people might
complain about having a prompt, but having a prompt is reasonable,
and there's no good reason not to have it. If people are going to
complain either way, why not take the most reasonable route, and
certainly worrying about what people will and won't complain about
preimptively won't help figure much out, if we already know that it's
impossible to please everyone.

Look at mouse support. How many people were either nervous, irritated,
or downright crappy about swamp being a mouse-run game. now how many
of those have changed their tune. my point is that it could save
people a little grief, and it can't hurt anyone at all to implement an
are you sure prompt. Microsoft word has this, because people make
mistakes. Makes sense to me.

Hi Jeremy, this looks like something similar to my connection interrupted
problem. somehow looks like pressing escape will reconnect me. When i
escape once in the save zone, besides bringing me to the main menu, i also
hear the server sponsor message again. escape the second time will bring me
back to the game but losing all the ammo that i collected, but at least is
quite nice to keep my weapons and armer. haha! pressing escape twice quickly
will get the connection interrupted message with the same result of the game
only partially saved.

With most everything, the manual with one read through won't give ou
everything you need. It's called experimenting and learning. When you learn
a guitar, you are not playing stairway to heaven on your first day of

impatient, and so it doesn't work for them.

Lol, it seems as everyone wants the spoilers for the cards in this game. I
haven't yet figured out why, as I have done quite well without ever needing
them.

Will someone who has unlocked all the hidden items in Entombed write me off
list and send them to me. I recognize that many people want to find these
in game without spoilerage. I would rather just play the full game that
I've paid for, which I know may not be sporting and all, but then I'm doing
this for my own pleasure, not competing with others, so I'd like access to
everything.

Thank you. Let me repeat, this should be off list so that those who want
the experience the other way can have it.

hi all.
if you have the archive don't bother getting it again.
if you have not get it again.
the v2.exe is a test file.
the next link the second link is a test build for ryan c.
but seriously I do hope this is not going ot be a waste.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1407689/nop31.zip
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1407689/nop31setup%20with%20no%209x%20code.exe

ryan c
the bellow link is a test file it loads in program files by default but you can
select this.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1407689/setup.exe
run this program if nothing else works.
if this does not work for you then you may have something else wrong for the
rest.
Don't get this last link, its the test program script for innosetup.
Ryan if this does work, then I will recompile the setup without any isstool
hacks just using the base wizzard.
if this does not work, I may have to try with iexpress or just zip the file but
this is real odd.

Hi.
Ok, the installer works, everything works.
Note, in some languages where the program can not register a file you will get
the english error because of the language not being defind.
these are traditional chinese, japanese and swedish.
other than that though the installer is ready to go.
I will move it to dropbox, however as I said I don't have a server to put it
on, so if I can have it on usagamesinteractive or audiogames then cool.

[Audyssey] ok here it is

2008-12-03 Thread shaun everiss
Hi all.
Well its finally uploaded for those to do with as they feel like.
This will stay up until no one wants it, I have files I have left up for years
and they still stay up.
This installer is about 29mb.
It was 28 before but I did some modifying.

Features.
fast and accessible.
no graphical images included or background colours.
user name prompts, start and end prompts.
Includes audio games guide and url to the audiogames page of the game.

multilanguage enabled.
Should also support undisplayable languages to.
Is at high compression with lzma ultra 64 both externally and internally.
the link is
http://www.divshare.com/download/5995330-348

Instructions to download.
click the link.

2 windows come up.
one of these is an add.
close this window.
Click download this file.
click skip add button.
the file will download.
Note if you don't have a pro account don't use a download manager as it will
crash.
At least you should get good speed.
This site has not overloaded but sometimes is slow, worst I have seen is 10kbps
but generally its faster than that.
I admit that everything is not all its supposed to be,, people like the
manuals, and guides as they are so I left those alone.
but at least the install is in reasonable english and other things.
Oh don't worry about choosing language unless you wish to install the program
using a different language as your language should be autodetected.
So if your user language is english then it is.

[Audyssey] ok its ready

2008-12-02 Thread shaun everiss
Hi.
just to tell everyone the installer is ready.
As well as the features I have stated it has the following features.
64 bit lzma ultra compression giving it a size of 28mb.
ANd its quite fast.
Downsides.
There are no documentation links in the program group.
Maybe there will be later I have no idea how to put the audio guide from
audiogames, plus the readme and guidance into the program.
You can make your own.
The program can access its instructions and guidence and you should be able to
read the stuff at install when its done.
Not sure if it will make any difference but you can put in your username and
org in the installer.
I have no idea why you would care but I just put it there.
happy downloading.
Oh I forgot you can't, I best get this file off.

Nah, you never see the monsters stats in any kind of RPG, not really anyway.
And I think the medkits and ammo are pretty well set up for the level 1
difficulty anyway. Could use a couple more on higher levels, but only
because in those cases, take level 3 for example. Difficulty, not the actual
level 3. On difficulty level 3, the matter boss, the first boss you ever
fight, can do almost 60 hp per shot. In situations like that I mean, you
have no other option but to dish out some dammage, then try to run behind
some structure and heal. But I personally think its set up just right for
level 1, just the right amount of challenge. Granted you can't really gain
too many levels unless you want to waste all your ammo or use melee weapons,
bust still.

Shaun,

It definitely helps to backtrack. There is a blue door, and it will help
solve your problem.

The extra enemies are a huge help if you play your cards right. If you can
take out enough of them with the sword/dagger, you can get euber
experience.

Finally, just keep trying with it. The game has only been talked about
for

about six days, now, and I personally think it would suck pretty major to
beat it too quickly. Give it some time, explore, mental map, be patient.

It's really not that hard once you get the hang of it.

Hi all.
One thing that I wish would be announced is when you reach a box that is
locked the name of the box is reannounced.
I got the silver key and all items in the silver box.
I also killed the evil woman and got the blue key.
I got the med eye from the second floor of chapter 2 and went around the
acid only to find that I needed a code.
Ie the guidence indicated there was more in here.
So am I missing something, I have gone through most of the rooms, so now
where is the blue door.
Man I really need a walkthrough for some of the tricky parts.
I also have no more amo for my pistol or revolver at the mo as used it all
on monsters.
I also will have to get more meds and such.
Someone really needs to do a walkthrough of the game and a play along of
the

game with stratogies on how to get past sertain bits.
The first chapter was a breeze, nothing really to it once you got the
layout of the electric boxes.
However this chapter 2 has got me stumped although I managed to figure out
where more stuff was enabling me to go foreward.
Hmm I wander for lower experience levels, ie level 1 that we can have it
where no monsters appear in rooms after they have got killed.
Its all well and good knowing where they are but after you have killed
them

a hundred times or so its boring.

I don't care too much about knowing the stats of the monsters, but part of
fun in gaming, for sighted people, is that they get to enjoy the design of
the monsters and graphics. We don't have that, so I think it's not too much
to ask for if we get some descriptions on the monsters so we can get even
more out of the games.
Also, it would be nice if we can go back to the previous chapter/building

Shaun,

It definitely helps to backtrack. There is a blue door, and it will help
solve your problem.

The extra enemies are a huge help if you play your cards right. If you can
take out enough of them with the sword/dagger, you can get euber experience.

Finally, just keep trying with it. The game has only been talked about for
about six days, now, and I personally think it would suck pretty major to
beat it too quickly.

Someone really needs to do a walkthrough of the game and a play along of the
game with stratogies on how to get past sertain bits.
Its all well and good knowing where they are but after you have killed them
a hundred times or so its boring.

Hmm
I am at level 10, I'd like to know where the room with the better weapon is, on
chapter 2 though, the last boss.
He don't keep still, I shoot and shoot then the guy moves.
I can't even look round.
there are traps in front and to the left, but the final guy moved, I used all
my med eyes.
The last 2 I had.
by the time I am situated on him he has 3 shots in me and I'm finnished.

Just give the player a command option to view the monster before combat.
While you're reading the stats/desc, the game's not moving.
Those who don't care about those things can just avoid using that command.

Someone really needs to do a walkthrough of the game and a play along of the
game with stratogies on how to get past sertain bits.
Its all well and good knowing where they are but after you have killed them
a hundred times or so its boring.

hi Darren, you can get the paladin which is the smallest jump ship, the
amounts of treasure get bigger in other systems, i used this one for a
short
time before buying the pattern.
the bank lones get bigger the further you get in the game.
also note you can't buy passenger cabins unless you are part of the
coalition.

Re: [Audyssey] Ok what ship to go for in smugglers

2008-01-14 Thread Darren Harris
Luckily I can see the system map. For those of you that can't, whilst I
haven't revealed them yet, there are a few secret systems. Because what
you have, are route lines going from sector to sector. So if you can
see, look for the lines going from system to system you can navigate
that way. You can see that the map is all interconnected. It's quite
easy to see. Unfortunately screen readers can't see the
interconnections. Am lucky enough to be able to see those connections.
The only thing I can suggest you do if I'm totally honest is to make a
note constently of what systems lead to where and refer back to that.

Actually that's not entirely true, you just have to go to a cooilition
planet to get it. Not all planets have everything, BTW, even if it is
that
factions tech. you have to look at the type of planet it is,
agriculture,
mining, low tech, high tech, etc. That will tell you what kind of tech
that
planet has and how high it will go (XL, XXL, etc.) You can buy anything
from
any faction as long as you're not at war with that faction at the
moment,
AKA you have a ceasefire with them. As for the age limit, I doubt he'll
take
it out, I wish he would though, unless you can seriously optomise (which
you
can't with a screen reader,) you'll likely never get to the huge ships
without cheating, and cheating is extremely hard to do.

Actually, what I meant by optomization is the trade routes. Its not so bad
from planet to planet, but when you're trading between systems, especially
the longer illegal drug run routes, you have to use the galaxy map and play
around with trade routes that way, and as far as I know there's no real way
to do that with a screen reader. and that's one of the biggest cash flows in
the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Ok what ship to go for in smugglers

2008-01-14 Thread Darren Harris
Well yes this is true you can't see the interconnections when it comes
to navigation routes. Luckily I can. I can't see the writing, so I move
the mouse over the writing on the galaxy map. So I use my eyes to
connect the dots as it were, and use windoweyes for the rest. Which I
can cope with. But I can definitely see how that's going to present a
problem for others. And here's the thing. It wasn't until I tried doing
a multi system mission and then I realised that particular problem. It
took me a while and a few test runs to work out the problem. But after
that, I can now get around no problem. Like I say the only real ay I can
suggest for you to get around the systems is for you to draw your own
map. Which is going to be a serious pain but I can't see any other
alternative. Not at the moment at any rate.

[Audyssey] ok

2006-06-22 Thread shaun everiss
Right.
I have figgured out the descent into darkness puzzels from last night.
However I think I am going to have to write down the sequence for the passcard.
What I was doing wrong was having to many items at once although the
game doesn't seem to have an item limit.
If you do sertain things wrong like on the computer puzzel then its
really crashy.
Still when I died I was able to quit and this does work.
Unfortuneately I do not seem to be able to restore from a saved game.
So what I may need to do is use jfw and notepad to record the sequences.
Either that or each tone sequence I here from the doors that need it
I will have to record.
If anything, this game requires you to use external resources if you
really want to finnish it.
I would recomend some way of noting down things.
And also a recorder or something to record audio sequences.
For those interested I actually may make a hints file to some of the puzzels.
It was only through fiddling around in the files I realised I needed
to do sertain things to accomplish some stuff.
Thankfully except for the small hard parts most of the game seems
straight forward.
You will die if you get codes wrong or not act fast enough.
From my delving into the sound files I have sermized that there is a
timed part of the end game sequence.
If someone wants a solution file or files or has a site I can post it
to email me.
It will take a bit to run through the game however I can probably do it.
Another thing I noticed is if you do stuff incorectly sequences will
be revealed that are out of place of actual sequences.
I therefore suggest You try to do everything in order.
Sometimes the game will bite you back buy giving you a char or place
you have not vissited.
