2009-09-21 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Josh,
Keep in mind you are talking about someone who lives in South Africa not
the U.S.A. I am sure they have some sort of training centers for the
blind, but pointing him to the centers in the U.S.A. isn't likely to help.

Smile.

Josh wrote:

Hi Nicol,

I recommend you go to www.cocenter.org and www.blindinc.org and get in touch with the people there. Nicol, you are an adult and if you want the screen turned off you can turn it off and if people put up or give you krap tell them to go to you-know-where. You're 31 years old or so. You control your life, not them. I recommend you get yourself to a training center either one of the state ones or one of those two that I mentioned.

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-21 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Agreed. I often run my desktop with the monitor off for exactly the same
reasons you pointed out. If I am the only one using the computer with
speech there is no need to have the screen on waisting power, risk
ruining the monitor from over use, etc. If anyone like Nicol is asked
why his/her monitor is off maybe they should approach it from this angle.
As far as someone getting suspicious over a monitor being turned off
that's just ridiculous, over bearing, and also disturbing. Anyone who
does that is neither your friend or family. What they are is your
jailer. No offense.

dark wrote:
Even though i actually can see and do use a screen on occasion for
things like watching films, when i'm merely doing something with
speech or audio i always turn my screen off anyway. It saves power and
stops my monitor from burning out, -- especially true if i've had
my desktop on for an extremely long time listening to audio.

Imho there's no point having a monitor on if nobody is using it,
especially for a long time.

It severely disturbs me that what you privately do in your own home by
your own choice is so strictly sensored in this way, especially
if you yourself aren't a jahova's witness.

if people tell me to shove it just tell them to buy you a computer and put it

Whilst I agree with what you're saying you're asking the guy to
effectively go against his family. Whilst I agree with you for various
reasons he may not be able to do it. Yes he is an adult and he should be
taking charge of his life. I agree with that totally. It's a question of
that against the costs if he does. I'm a strong willed person. If I have
to upset someone then yes I'll do it no questions asked and I don't make
any exceptions to that rule. Whether it be friend family blood relation
or no. if it has to be done then so be it. My life is mine. I am my own
master nobody else. I have no qualms with taking action like that if it
is so required. But not everybody has the strength of will and character
to do that. Which is frustrating but true never the less.

Hi,

I know he's in South Africa. During my time at the colorado center I met
blind people from all over the world who got sponsored to come here to
the center and learn independence skills. So if Nocol wants to he could
go to one of those centers. Also if Nicol wants to go but people in his
life are preventing him from doing so. I could get Nicol's contact info
off list, give it to the centers, and they could take it from there. If
necessary get the government of his country involved. Nicol is an adult
he can make his own decisions and if his mom can't handle it too bad for
her that's her problem, not Nicol's.

It is perfectly normal to turn your monitor off if one is blind. I mean what
good would it do? I have mine only turned on if a sighted person is wanting

You have your set up the way you are comfortable with, I would not turn it

I recommend you go to www.cocenter.org and www.blindinc.org and get in
touch with the people there. Nicol, you are an adult and if you want the
screen turned off you can turn it off and if people put up or give you
krap tell them to go to you-know-where. You're 31 years old or so. You
control your life, not them. I recommend you get yourself to a training
center either one of the state ones or one of those two that I mentioned.

Even though i actually can see and do use a screen on occasion for things
like watching films, when i'm merely doing something with speech or audio i
always turn my screen off anyway. It saves power and stops my monitor from
burning out, -- especially true if i've had my desktop on for an
extremely long time listening to audio.

Imho there's no point having a monitor on if nobody is using it, especially
for a long time.

It severely disturbs me that what you privately do in your own home by your
own choice is so strictly sensored in this way, especially if you
yourself aren't a jahova's witness.

If I recall correctly...all laptops have a setting..button..whatever to
control the brighteness of the screen. So there is a way to turn the
brightness way down as if the screen were offgrin.
and this should also extend the battery life on your laptop...give you more
time between chargings.

Hi Nicol,
I think you did well confronting the problem instead of sneaking around to
do it. Privacy is important, but having to sneak around is not privacy, it
is their control on you. You confronted them with the facts, you made them
understand that you are going to do this, and they backed down. Now you are
no longer doing something sneaky, and having to find ways to get around
these people. You got my respect and I'm proud of you for handling the
situation straight up.

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-20 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Jason,
I am changing the name on the screen of the Sarah game.
But during the time when you hear the company logo and the title music the
title has to stay what it was,

Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry.
This is due to how the GMA game engine creates a registration key.
If I was to change it to Sarah during that first few seconds, then I would
have to send out all new registration keys to everyone who has purchased the
game.
But you can minimize the time that full game title is on the screen by
hitting the control key.
This change will happen in the update of the game I am working on and have
almost completed.

Sincerely,
Phil

Way to go for Phil changing the title of Sarah.

In my opinion, a game, a book, a movie - whatever. They're all works of

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-20 Thread dark
Even though i actually can see and do use a screen on occasion for things
like watching films, when i'm merely doing something with speech or audio i
always turn my screen off anyway. It saves power and stops my monitor from
burning out, -- especially true if i've had my desktop on for an
extremely long time listening to audio.

Imho there's no point having a monitor on if nobody is using it, especially
for a long time.

It severely disturbs me that what you privately do in your own home by your
own choice is so strictly sensored in this way, especially if you
yourself aren't a jahova's witness.

Beware the Grue!

The reason why I cannot turn off my monitor if I play a game like sarah.
The people that share the flat with me will get suspicious if my screen is

She will ask me why my screen is off.

Completely agree with this statement. It doesn't matter what you believe

Way to go for Phil changing the title of Sarah.

Hi Allison,
He is an adult, but age really isn't the issue here. Apparently from
what I gather regardless of his age his mother tries to control him,
boss him around, and tell him what to do. Especially, when a game, book,

or something offends her religious views.

For most of us we move away from home, get a job, and when a parent or
in-laws try to tell us what to do we can tell them "bite me" and that
will be the end of it. I guess he still lives with or near enough to his

mother that she still has a controlling influence on his life so telling

her to "go jump in a river" isn't feasible.

Hi all
I am pleased to announce that my mom has at last agreed that shades of
doom

is ok for me to play.
She has tried to forbid me for years to play sod as she felt its sheer
violence.
I will tell how it came to be that my mom has softened her view about sod.
me and a friend of mine were having a pizza at a restaurant yesterday
evening and we talked about games.
I told this friend about the audio games I am playing, I described pipe2
to

him in detail. and he told me about his games.
He told me that he is currently playing mainstream games made for the pc.
He once had the x box but it was too expensive.
Each game on the x box costs 500 south african rand.
But this friend told me about ashooting game that he bought himself for
his

pc, called unreal tournament where there is a lot of shooting involved.
The game consist of different missions/tasks but the main objective is
fighting.
So I asked him whether his dad is ok with the game he is playing as he
stays

with his family and they are also Jehovah witnesses, he told me yes.
So today I spoke to my mom about this friend's game, telling her his dad
does not have a problem with him playhing it. and she told me that each
person must decide according to his conscience.
So I described shades of doom to my mom in the language of the man on the
street.
I told my mom that in shades of doom I do not kill people, I kill monsters
similar to prehistoric monsters such as dinosaurs.
I told her about the experiment that went wrong and that my mission is to
collect wafers to shut down the experiment and to collect the wafers I
have

to kill creatures.
She asked if there is blood in the sod game and I answered no.
So eventually she agreed that its not harmfull to me.
I will try to translate her words into English.
"now I agree a game of erasing monsters is not that bad."
So now I can freelly play shades of doom without anybody asking me what I
am

playing if they see the title on my screen.
Because I share my flat with a couple, my mom's friends, and they care for
me such as doing the cooking.
So if they have any questions, I will just explain to them how I have
explained to my mom and that its ok with her for me to play sod.
Spoiler
space
And I can also now play sarah soon even though my mom and her friends
hates
magic games . so soon I can also now freely play sarah without them
watching

the screen due to the fact that phil will change the screen name to only
sarah instead of sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry in his
coming update.

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-18 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello there,
I came into this thread a bit late...so I had to go back and read alot of
old messages to get the feel for what is going on here.

My experience to some of what is being discussed goes like this:
I used to live with a girlfriend in my house.
I also played shades of doom.
she is a born again christian as am I.
she was a bit miffed I was playing this shooting game.
here is how I settled the matter.
As I am totally blind..I turned my monitor off.
even if she walks by my open door, she will not know what I am doing.
as many of these games are very specific about what direction a sound comes
at you from, I got a very nice pair of headphones to wear when I play any
game.
so once again, even when she is standing in my room talking to me..she has
no idea what I am doing unless I have the volume on the head phones turned
way up high.

I consider this leveling the playfield.
when she is on her computer I have no idea what she is doing as she turns
her speakers off.
I can't see or hear what she is doing and she can't see or hear what I am
doing.

No problem here...grin.
religion and computer games can co-exist.
Robert

If you are not a Jehovah's Witness, and you are an adult, your wish should
be your command, so to speak, as long as there is no harm in your choices,
particularly when it comes to playing computer games. The fact that you can
now play SOD is very good news.

That is good news. I actually had a girlfriend who, thought not of the same
religious persuasion, used to have those beliefs or very similar ones. Of
course she does seem to have calmed down in that area lately. But she would
have done the same things when we were together had I given her the
opportunity.

Hi all
I am pleased to announce that my mom has at last agreed that shades of
doom

is ok for me to play.

I completely understand. Please know that my question wasn't meant to offend
or cause any kind of controversy. This kind of situation is unfortunately
something which I encounter every day as part of my job. There are tactful
ways of telling her to go jump in a river without saying it outright.
However, that's beyond the scope of this list, so I won't elaborate further.

Hi Allison,
He is an adult, but age really isn't the issue here. Apparently from what
I gather regardless of his age his mother tries to control him, boss him
around, and tell him what to do. Especially, when a game, book, or
something offends her religious views.

For most of us we move away from home, get a job, and when a parent or
in-laws try to tell us what to do we can tell them "bite me" and that will
be the end of it. I guess he still lives with or near enough to his mother
that she still has a controlling influence on his life so telling her to
"go jump in a river" isn't feasible.

Subject: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

Hi all
I am pleased to announce that my mom has at last agreed that shades of
doom

is ok for me to play.
