Re: [Audyssey] Kinect controls games by voice and jesture

2010-10-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Actually that has been one of the major factors in our switch from
Windos to Linux here. I am one of those people who purchases a
computer every three to five years and as a result my wife and I have
a number of older computers sitting around. Some I referb and sell,
and others I keep around as backup computers in case something happens
to one of the main systems. Thing is most of them can't handle Windows
7 without a massive hardware upgrade, and the cost of licensing a copy
of Windows for every system is pprohibatively expensive anyway. Add to
it the fact that a lot of software developers, accessible game
developers included, have gone to this stupid hardware based licensing
system which means i have to grab a new license key for every single
computer I own. When you add up the cost of hardware and software
upgrades to run the latest Windows software it is clearly not
practical for my family's needs.
Linux, however, is relatively inexpensive, comes with a decent screen
reader built in, and it runs fairly well on all of our computers. Our
family desktop is roughly five years old and Ubuntu 10 has no problems
running on it where I'd have to buy more memory, upgrade the processor
speed, etc to get Windows 7 to run remotely well on the same system.
Weather Microsoft realises it or not here in the U.S.A. people are in
a financial crunch and I see no need to go out and buy all new
hardware to upgrade to Windows 7 when I can install and run the latest
Linux OS on my existing hardware. Plus the gaming libraries like SFML
are mature enough to create fairly decent games for the platform. Even
10 years ago Loki Games created a number of high profile games for
Linux like Civilization, Quake, Doom, etc using the SDL API proving
Linux can certainly compete with Windows as a gaming platform if we
can just draw more developers to the platform.
However, as far as Microsoft in general goes they lost me a long time
ago. Windows Vista was the straw that broke the elifants back. I
purchased a copy of it right after it was released and it did
absolutely nothing but constantly crash and ran slower than a turtle
with three broken legs until they released some updates/service packs
to try and fix the majority of the problems. Then, they screwed me
when my motherboard died and they wanted me to pay for a brand new
copy. Screw them and the horse they rode in on!

Cheers!

Hi,
Unfortunately, I don't have a PS3 so havent' had a chanse to try the
Move yet. I'm still with the PS2 for the moment since it has the most
playable titles, and I'm short on cash for a PS3 at the moment.
However, I've heard a lot of good things about the Move, and it is
beginning to make Wii fans think twice about the Wii console.

My point exactly. It's not that I don't approve of the technology, some
games would be downright fn to play. But games like competetive fighting
games that are so heavily basd on timing couldn't bedone wel. At least not
atthis time. That, and for some reason, fighting games just feel so much
more like the good old funfests they are when playing with a controller or
arcade stick. Don't know if it's the same with anyone else though. lol.

Re: [Audyssey] Kinect controls games by voice and jesture

2010-10-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Clement,
Yeah, I've heard that too. You got a point. I know just with the
experience I have had with the Wii-Motes it is darn hard to do
anything precise because the motion sensor in the Wii-Mote usually
gives you too much motion or too little motion. While a cool idea in
concept it fails to give you the precision and reliability of a
standard joystick or game pad.
I'm pretty sure this Kinect device by Microsoft will have similar
drawbacks. The article did mention bugs in the system, and I'm pretty
sure one of them is that the Kinect device won't work with all of the
XBox's flagship titles that need a standard controller. Plus some
games just don't feel right without a game controller for that matter.
For example, you can take any kind of racing game out there you like
and it feels quite natural to use it with a racing wheel. All of the
controles like the wheel, gear shift, breaks, etc feel in a lot of
respects like driving a car. Trying to use motions and gestures to
drive a car would frankly be down right weird and not very intuitive
in my opinion.

I don't know about more accessible. A visual game is still a visual game.
Prince of Persia, for example. Doesn't matter whether you can control it all
the time... you still have to jump at the right places, climb at the right
places. So more interactive, defnitely. More acessible? This is just my
opinion, but not very likely. Not in that many cases, a any rate.

yep i know a few of my brothers mate's who have already put orders in for
this. It could also to a degree make games a bit more accessable for us.
it will deffinatly make it more interactive.

Hi,
That's my thought exactly. the Kinect technology does sound better
than the Wii. However, I am concerned about accessibility as it might
be more difficult to access menus and things through gestures
alone.Although, perhaps the voice commands will allow you to say "new
game" and it will start a new game.
However, imagine playing a game like Super Street Fighter with a
Kinect device. Just swing a punch and the game characterthrows a
punch. No controllers etc in volved. Just motion at it with a punch,
chop, whatever and the game does it. Now, that is frickin' sweet.

Re: [Audyssey] Kinect controls games by voice and jesture

2010-10-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,
Wow! This Kinect technology sounds awesome. I'd never expect Microsoft
actually would come up with something that sounds this cool. Once
released this will make the XBox 360 the leading game console out
there if it works. Especially, since Microsoft has been having alot of
commercial failures the past three or four years. Especially, in there
Windows line of products.
As the article made reference to many PC users loved Windows XP, but
when Microsoft released Vista it turned out to be a huge failure for
the company. Many private computer users and big companies refused to
upgrade, and many others invested in Apple. As a result Apple's sales
quickly shot up with a host of innovative devices like the IPod,
IPhone, etc not to mention several long time Windows users switched
to Mac OS. The very fact that in 2007 there were very few VI users
using Mac and now there is over a hundred running Macs is a testament
to how quickly Apple is eating up the Windows market. I think without
new products like this Kinect device Microsoft is doomed in the long
run. They can't afford more failures like Vista or they will lose
their Windows market to Apple, and they need to keep their XBox
console strong and innovative to keep Sony and Nintendo from taking
the lead in the console market.
Long term if they can make this Kinect technology work it might bring
in a new era of Windows gaming technologies. For sure the PC gaming
market has been falling out of favor thanks to alternative consoles
like the Play Station III, the Nintendo Wii, and the XBox. Plus
Transgaming has created a top of the line game emulator for Mac OS,
Cider, which allows a Mac OS user to play the majority of big name PC
titles on their Mac. I don't have solid figures here, but i know since
Cider was released Mac has become a fairly serious gaming platform for
gamers. Transgaming has created a sister project, Cedega, for Linux
that offers the same features as Cider for Linux users. This adds
further punishment and insult to the Windows PC gaming market. With
all the alternatives and competition out there I' say Microsoft needs
something like the Kinect technology to hold onto their markets.

Cheers!
