g_b WORK WORK WORK.....

2005-07-02 Thread ketan

WORKWORKWORK
A long time ago, there was an Emperorwho told his
horsemanthat if he could ride on his horse and cover as much land
area as he likes, then
the Emperor would give him the area of land he has covered. Sure enough, the
horseman quickly jumped onto his horse and rode as fast as possible to cover as
much land area as he could.He kept on riding and riding, whipping
the horseto go as fast as possible. When he was hungry or tired, he
did not stop because he wanted to cover as much area as possible.

Came to a point when he had covered a substantial area and he was
exhaustedand wasdying. Then he asked himself, Why
did I push myself so hard to cover so much land area? Now I am dyingand I
only need a very small area to burymyself.

The above story is similar with the journey of our Life. We push very hard
everyday to make moremoney, to gain power andrecognition. We
neglect our health, time with our familyand to appreciate the
surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love.

One day when we look back , we will realize that we don't really need that
much, but then we cannot turn back timefor what we have missed.

Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Life is
definitely not about work!Work is only necessary to keep us living
so as to enjoy the beautyand pleasures of life. Life is a balance
of Work and Play, Family and Personal time. You have to decide how you want to
balance your Life. Define your priorities, realize what you are able to
compromise but always let some of your decisions be based on your
instincts.Happinessis the meaning and the purpose of
Life, the whole aim of human existence.

So, take it easy, do what you want to do and appreciate nature. Life is
fragile, Life is short. Do not take Life for granted. Live a balanced lifestyle
and enjoy Life!

Watch your thoughts; they becomewords.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

It's becoming
harder to come out of the closet'

Sidhi Chadha
New Delhi,June 29, 2005

While the homosexual movement in the
West is clamouring for attention, activists in India feel that too much hype
has queered the pitch for those who want to come out in the open.
People in different parts of India hold
different views on homosexuality as the movement is still developing here.
However gays are definitely not welcome when it comes to marriage and they
also face discrimination in other spheres of life - be it employment or
relationships. Personally I didn't have any such problem because my parents
were very supportive...I could confide in them. They are wonderful human
beings who are above issues like sexuality.
Indians have made such a hue and
cry about the subject that it has become more difficult for gays to come
out of the closet. In fact it has even become difficult for gays to admit
their sexuality to themselves! I also took a lot of time to come terms with
the fact that I am gay. I went to doctors to seek medical treatment because
it was hard for me to believe that I wasn't normal, that is to say,
heterosexual. But then it isn't possible to hide the truth, especially from
yourself. I accepted my sexuality when I was 20-21. Now, I am 58-years-old
and a lot of water has flown under the bridge, admits Ashok Row Kavi,
one of India's
foremost gay activist and chairperson of the Mumbai-based Humsafar Trust.
Anjali Gopalan, Chairperson of Naz
Foundation, squarely blames an ill-informed media for blowing things out of
proportion. According to her: Indians have a mixed reaction to gays.
While some want them imprisoned, others extend their support. But if you
see the larger picture, then it's evident that gays are discriminated
against and not considered part of so-called society. I feel much of the
negativity is due to media hype. The media is guilty of sensationalising a
very sensitive subject; so much so that many will now never admit that they
are gay! People don't understand that homosexuality is not a recent
phenomenon in India.
It's been part of our culture since ancient times and Indians became
prudish in their views only much later. People feel scared of gays without
knowing what they go through, what's happening to them and why they need
us. Media makes it harder by showing gays as a flamboyant community. Most
don't fit the bill and try to hide their sexuality fearing societal
backlash.
For gays, coming to terms with their
true identity is a torturous process, insists Gopalan. Most
homosexuals go through phases. The message around them is that
'heterosexuality is normal'. Therefore it becomes difficult for them to
accept that they are different. They are compelled to believe that they
should not be different. They also fear discrimination that is evident at
every step - at job interviews, among friends, and so on. There's a certain
desperation not to be marginalised by the peer group, she says.
Although being a gay in India may
be tough, it's far tougher being a lesbian, agree both Kavi and Gopalan.
Women always feel the sharper end
of the stick. There's much more negativity towards them as compared to
gays. As it is, female sexuality is never discussed in the open, and when a
woman shows a preference for her own sex, it's bound to create chaos,
says Gopalan.
Kavi echoes her views. We live in
a male-dominated society that finds it difficult to tolerate a woman who
asserts her sexuality. Gays are discriminated against but not as much as
lesbians, he says.
According to Gopalan, it's time Indians
showed a little more maturity in dealing with the gay community. Not
accepting someone's sexuality is a violation of the person's fundamental
rights. If the law allows people to drive at the age of 18, and girls to
get married, then why should Indians not have the same freedom when it
comes to choosing their partners?

Din
mein Raja raat mein Rani!
By: Nishant A Bhuse
June 20, 2005

Every day, some 300 Bollywood aspirants from
all over India,
come to Mumbai to try their luck. While many succeed, almost as many if not
more, fail.

This is the story of one such aspirant, who is now making some big money in
prostitution.

Lots
of money

I am a
struggling actor in Bollywood since the last three years. I used to make
just enough to make ends meet.

Then, I met some men who indulged in homosexuality and made a great deal of
money, which intrigued me enough to want to join them, says Raja
(surname concealed)

Din mein Raja ban ke filmon ke liye struggle karta hoon, lekin jab
koi signal deta hai to raat ko rani ban ke usko khush karta hoon,
says Raja who has bagged two roles in films, which are under production.

He says he uses the extra cash for pocket money and his clients actually
call him Rani.

Client
base

He added, I
have spent a great deal of time with several leading fashion designers,
directors (young and old), choreographers and model coordinators,
said Raja. He was shocked to find one of his favourite actors, who made a
comeback as a cop in a negative role, is a homosexual.

I was picked up in his huge Land Cruiser and taken to an isolated
car park, where we had oral sex, adds Raja who further stated that
sometimes even rickshaw drivers are his clients.

Charges
depend on customer

He says the charges
depend on the customer. In our profession, 40 per cent of the men
are gay, while the others are eunuchs, adds Raja.

He said that he would find it difficult to quit soliciting. Filhaal
mein mushkil hai, but if I become a known actor, I will think about it. I
will be paid in lakhs for my services then, he smiles confidently.

Cops
say

They do not
have a permanent base. As and when our night patrolling teams across the
city find them lingering around the city roads, we fine them under
Sections 110 and 117 of the Mumbai Police Act (indecency in public
places), says an IPS officer.

  Rajas
  undercover operations

  Cruising
  zone: No base
  can be spotted anywhere, either in the western suburbs or in south
  Mumbai.

  How:

  regular clients, pimps and event coordinators or even model coordinators

  Services:
  Oral sex, sex.

  Where:
  Oral sex (short
  services) are carried out in cars or in guesthouses situated nearby on a
  nominal charge of Rs 200 per hour.

  If the client wants full service (sex) then its at a three-star
  hotel.

  Charges:
  If a client
  approaches them in a swanky car, the rates shoot up to Rs 3,000 (sex for
  three hours). Clients who travel in an auto, taxi or two wheelers pay Rs
  300 to Rs 500 (oral sex)

  Client
  base: From an auto
  driver to film personalities, models, businessmen and college students.

  Mumbai, June 19: BABAK Jabbari (25), the Iranian
  student who was an interpreter to Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, died of
  cardio-respiratory failure early on Sunday morning.
  The St
  Xaviers College student, who had been admitted to Breach Candy
  Hospital on June 7 with 75 per cent
  burns after an alleged suicide attempt, was later shifted to Masina Hospital, Byculla.
  It
  was unexpected since his condition was improving in the last few
  days, said Dr S M Keswani, a plastic surgeon at Masina Hospital.
  Meanwhile,
  the mystery surrounding Jabbaris suicide attempt deepened
  with the translator appointed by the Iranian consulate in Mumbai claiming
  that Jabbari said he was attacked.
  They
  did this to me, they did this to me thats all that he kept
  repeating, said the translator, speaking on condition of
  anonymity. I have given my statement to the Gamdevi
  police.
  We
  have to verify the facts. Things will be clearer by Monday,
  said Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Jadhav, adding that they are awaiting the
  post-mortem report from J J Hospital.
  According
  to the Gamdevi police, Jabbari was involved in a relationship with his close
  friend Dr Samir Kadri, an intern at KEM Hospital.

  On the
  night of June 7, Jabbari was at the Kadri residence, the swank American View

g_b Gay patients' discrimination fear

  Gay
  patients' discrimination fear

Doctors must not
discriminate against gay men, the report says

  Gay
  and lesbian patients are often reluctant to reveal their sexuality to their
  doctors because they fear their treatment will suffer, a report claims.
  A British Medical Association report also says some homosexual
  doctors do not 'come out' to colleagues because they fear the consequences.
  One gay doctor even reported being told he should not work in
  child health because of his sexuality.
  The BMA has issued guidance on how the NHS should combat
  discrimination.

Everyone
has the right to be treated equally, regardless of their sexual orientation

Dr Vivienne
Nathanson, British Medical Association

  Its report is published at the start of Gay Pride
  fortnight.
  It follows the recent publication of legislation which outlawed
  discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.
  The BMA says simple changes, such as using gender neutral
  language when talking about a patient's partner, and not assuming sexual
  health is the primary health need of gay patients, would reduce feelings of
  discrimination.
  Its report calls for a series of measures including guidance on
  sexual orientation in NHS equal opportunities policies, and a crack-down on
  incidents of homophobia.
  It also includes guidelines for teaching medical students how to
  act in a non-judgemental way towards gay and lesbian colleagues and patients.

  'Respect and sensitivity'
  Dr Vivienne Nathanson, the BMA's Head of Science and Ethics
  said: Everyone has the right to be treated equally, regardless of their
  sexual orientation.
  Doctors and patients should feel safe and confident when
  they are in hospitals and surgeries.
  Dr Sam Everington, co-chair of the BMA's Equal Opportunities
  Committee and Deputy Chairman of the BMA said: Future doctors have a
  responsibility to their colleagues and patients.
  Sexual orientation should be included in the medical
  school curriculum and will help create a health service environment where all
  doctors can achieve their full potential and all patients be treated with the
  respect they deserve.
  Dr Rachel Hogg, co-chair of the Gay and Lesbian Association of
  Doctors and Dentists (GLADD) said: The NHS currently uses an estimate
  that at least 1 in 20 of the population are lesbian or gay - so an increased
  awareness that colleagues and patients may not be heterosexual is crucial to
  treating each other sensitively and respectfully.
  Justin Varney, a public health doctor based in London, said the discrimination within the
  health service tends to be subtle.
  When I was a student, there were doctors who said 'you
  can't do paediatrics as a gay man'.
  It's not blatant. People don't come and say 'you shouldn't
  do this speciality if you're gay.
  They would tend to say 'this might not be the wisest
  career path for someone with your skills'.
  A spokesman for the gay rights organisation Stonewall said the
  report backed up previous reports of discrimination in the NHS.
  He added: While lesbian and gay staff are now protected by
  employment law, patients often face discrimination too which is why Stonewall
  is calling for protection in terms of goods and services in the Equality Bill
  currently going through parliament.

Subject: Job:
Academic Director, Czech
 Republic

From:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Academic
Director, SIT Study Abroad, Czech
  Republic: Arts and Social Change, School for
International Training (SIT)

(http://www.worldlearning.org/hr/postings/ad_czechrep.html)

Program Base: Prague, Czech
  Republic

Reports to:
Director, European and Middle Eastern Studies, Brattleboro, VT

Start Date:
August 2005

The School for
International Training is recruiting for an Academic Director

(AD) for its
program located in Prague, Czech Republic. The program theme
is Arts and Social Change (www.sit.edu/studyabroad/europe/czech.html).
This program follows the SIT model with its focus on experiential learning to
complement classroom instruction. Students finish their academic semester
undertaking an independent research project, known as an ISP, which complements
their academic coursework, composed of the thematic seminar, research
methodology and Czech language class.

The role of
the Academic Director (AD) is essentially threefold: 1) teaching,

2) organizing,
and 3) advising. This threefold role derives from the uniqueness of SIT Study
Abroad that combines traditional coursework and experiential learning into a
rigorous academic program for students from colleges and universities
throughout the United States.

General
responsibilities:

--Advising in matters
regarding academic program delivery and scheduling;

--Directing
the students' initial cross-cultural orientation and methods and techniques of
field study seminar;

--Organizing
and occasionally teaching portions of the field study and thematic seminars,
working collegially with host country colleagues;

--Organizing
educational visits and field trips and integrating the learning from these, as
well as from the homestay, into the traditional coursework parts of the
program;

--Identifying
and cooperating with appropriate host country experts to advise students on
their independent study projects;

--Generally
guiding and advising students in both their academic and cross-cultural
learning processes - understanding that for many students this is the first
experience away from home and living in another culture - thus serving as an
educator/teacher in the broadest sense by assisting students to draw
substantive connections from among different aspects of the semester
experience;

--Conducting
the program review and academic evaluation at the end of the program and
preparing a rigorous written evaluation for each student's transcript,
clarifying both what the student achieved and how it was achieved;

--Managing all
program logistics and administration, and in some cases supervising local
staff; working effectively and diplomatically with relevant local officials;

--Negotiating
cost-effective program services and managing the program budget throughout the
semester;

--Maintaining
regular communication with the SIT Study Abroad office in Brattleboro and submitting detailed, timely
reports, as required;

--Upon return
to the US,
assisting in explaining the program to interested individuals at home campuses
and communities, as feasible.

Requirements:
The AD must have at least a Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in appropriate
academic area (ie art history, cultural anthropology, Eastern European
history); including substantial academic and practical knowledge of the Czech
Republic, and U.S. undergraduate teaching experience; Czech language ability
preferred. Further, he/she must be attuned to the educational philosophy and
expectations of SIT and possess both commitment to academic excellence and the
personal leadership qualities required by the program.

Among the
latter are cultural sensitivity and adaptability; intellectual curiosity and
enthusiasm for challenge; tact and diplomacy in working with host nationals, on
the one hand, and American students, on the other; organizational ability;
budget management skills; computer literacy; energy; sense of humor; and
training in social science methods.

Term: The
position will begin in August 2005, with an initial training period in Brattleboro, VT.
This is a full-time position. Contract appointments are generally for a minimum
two-semester period,

  (New York City) A 32 year
  old Brooklyn man is in a coma and listed in
  critical condition after being attacked by three men who beat, kicked and
  stomped on him while yelling homophobic epithets.
  The
  attack on Dwan Prince occurred outside his apartment building on E. 94th St. and Kings Highway.
  As
  Prince lay in a pool of his own blood witnesses rushed to his aid, but even
  then his attackers continued to kick him.
  Witnesses
  said the assailants were three black men who got out of a BMW and rushed
  Prince about midnight.
  Police
  have listed the attack as a hate crime. Investigators say witnesses
  gave good descriptions of the trio and add they are confident of making an
  arrest. It is believed Price may have made a flirtatious comment to one of
  the men earlier in the day.
  Prince,
  who is HIV-positive, worked as a porter in the building where he lived is
  regarded as a kind gentle man by people who know him.
  I'm
  praying for him, neighbor Malika Brown said.
  Another
  neighbor said that when the building's elevator recently broke down Prince
  posted signs on each floor that explained why the elevator was broken and
  what was being done to fix it.
  A
  witness said that when he arrived at the scene he yelled at the attackers and
  asked why they were beating Prince. One of the men only uttered an anti-gay
  insult and kicked Prince in the head before rushing off.
  Another
  man said that he found Price without a heart beat and began to massage his
  chest until emergency crews could arrive. A woman rushed back into the
  apartment building came back with a jug of water and towels to try to wipe
  blood from Price's face.

Farrell does SHINE through (I've never been anybody's fan, i have to be
objective, since i major in feature writing).

Colin Farrell proved to everyone that he is much more than just a NYC
guy from a phone booth, he is a leader, a fighter, a man! So
let the critics bite their elbows !

g_b Colin Farrell As Alexander The Great Gay

2004-11-15 Thread ketan

Exclusive:Colin
Farrell As Alexander The Great Gayby
Tim Nasson, Special to 365Gay.com
Five foot, ten inch, international superstar, Colin
Farrell, walks into a suite at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles on a recent
late Sunday morning for our scheduled interview, not with cup of coffee in one
hand, cell phone in the other, as ‘conventional’ Hollywood types normally do.
No. One of his hand’s long, thick fingers are gripping a goblet of Merlot, the
other is holding a half burnt cigarette. The polite Colin doesn’t ask if it is
OK to smoke, he will smoke and drink where and when he damn well pleases, but
kindly delivers the cigarette to his mouth and puts out an empty hand to shake
mine, clenching the cigarette between his teeth, in order to utter some
pleasantries. “Nice to meet you, brother,” he chimes in the Dublin accent that
he has no intention of ever losing. “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,
man.”
Farrell, who earlier this year starred as the sexually
ambiguous Bobby Morrow in the gay film “A Home At the End of the World,”(based
on “The Hours’” gay author Michael Cunningham’s novel), is back, bigger and
better than ever in the title role of Oliver Stone’s three hour epic,
“Alexander,” set for release by Warner Bros. this Thanksgiving. What makes this
“Alexander” different from previous incarnations, such as the Richard Burton,
1956 version, is Stone’s and Farrell’s willingness to portray Alexander as the
sexual free spirit that he reportedly was. And not covering up Alexander’s love
of not one, but two lifelong boy friends, Hephaestion, (played by Jared Leto),
and Bagoas (Francisco Bosch, in his motion picture debut).
Twenty-eight year old Farrell has earned not only his
paychecks but rave reviews for practically every movie he has starred in since
his debut only four years ago in Joel Schumacher’s “Tigerland.” For that, his
first role, he earned the Best Actor Award from The Boston Society of Film
Critics. And more importantly to those who are signing the paychecks, Farrell
has won a plethora of accolades from the MTV Movie Awards and Teen Choice
Awards. Is Oscar next?
Well, “Alexander” has yet to hit theaters and the
Oscar race doesn’t begin until November 24 but don’t be surprised to see Farrell
sitting in the chair Tom Cruise was in last year, (for Warner Bros.’ “The Last
Samurai”), at the Awards, waiting to hear his name called along with four other
nominees, for Best Actor.
Farrell, a confirmed heterosexual, had fun explaining
to me why he chose two ‘gay’ roles in a row this year.
“It had to do with the characters, the movies and the
scripts,” he answers. “But to be honest, I didn’t enjoy kissing the men any more
than I am sure a gay guy would enjoy licking a woman’s pussy,” he adds,
matter-of-factly. “I find it repulsive when a guy’s stubble is pressed against
my lip. But if it’s part of the job, then who am I to complain? I just know that
for me, being with a guy in any way sexual is not for me. However, Oliver Stone
was one-hundred percent correct in wanting to and actually portraying Alexander
as he was - a bi-sexual ruler of the world. He was married, to more than one
woman, and got them pregnant. But he also had such strong relationships,
including sexual, with his closest male friends. But back then, four hundred
years before Christ, that was life as they knew it. No man was married to just
one woman. And if a man loved another man, he had no problem showing his love
for that person in a sexual way. When Christ came to earth and Christianity
evolved the dynamics of sex and marriage changed. You married one woman and
being gay was a sin. If you loved another man, you were destined for
hell.”
Farrell, who spent nearly a year and a half on
“Alexander”, at the moment, is working on the reclusive director Terrance (“The
Thin Red Line”) Malick’s new film, “A New World,” as John Smith. Yes, the
original explorer John Smith and Pocahontas. And he is sans “Alexander’s” golden
locks the day I sit with him. Instead, he has long, dark, red-wine/brown colored
hair. Or is it his hair? “Here,” he says to me, taking my hand and putting it on
his scalp. “It’s not my real hair. Extensions, man.” The fake hair, the long
hair, is glued to his head and I can feel the plastic bubbles that knot on to
his real strands. “I can’t fucking wait till this is over. I am constantly
picking at it and they have to touch it up constantly.”
As we know, “Alexander,” by age twenty-five,
conquered 90% of the known world and by his death at age 33 he had marched his
soldiers, (always at the front lines, himself), more than 22,000 miles and owned
more than 2,000, square miles of land, including all of Greece, Albania,
Turkey, Bulgaria, Egypt, Libya, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Iraq,
Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India. Made king at age twenty,
immediately following the murder of his father, Philip, (Val Kilmer), he

The Circuit Party: Mass Orgy or Cultural Mecca?
JJ Dillon

Looking
at this photograph of Montreal’s Black and Blue ball, one might think it
confirms the most epicurean stereotypes of the gay male: near-naked dancers push
one against the other, club lights stream down from the ceiling, sweaty men
kiss, grope, laugh. Absolutely everyone seems high. It’s blatant hedonism. A
beauty contest. An empty confluence of excesses. Or is it?Such a
dismissal may be easy to make when glancing at a single photo, but it’s more
difficult—perhaps impossible—if one looks at the bigger picture. The party
itself is just one event in a seven-day festival that also
offers a health summit, a vernissage, a swim-a-thon, a girl’s military party and
something called Jock Ball—all organized by Bad
Boy Club Montréal (BBCM). Taken as a whole, the Black and Blue festival is
one of the most successful events in Montreal’s yearly cultural calendar; that’s
saying a great deal considering this city also hosts the Just for Laughs Festival, a major Grand Prix race and the acclaimed Festival International de Jazz de
Montréal. Since it began in 1991, Black and Blue has pumped $500 million
into the local economy. Over 80,000 people are expected to attend the fifty-plus
events planned for this year’s edition. Cirque du
Soleil is performing. Surely there is more going on than just rampant carnality.And
yet, the picture remains. When I pitched this article to Maisonneuve, an editor
mentioned that he’d heard from a gay friend (and former party attendee) that one
had to be staggeringly beautiful to even step on the party’s sweaty, teeming
dance floor. Black and Blue shares this reputation for vanity with similar
parties that are collectively known as “the circuit”: an international network
of gay celebrations featuring huge crowds, unbridled groping, various
intoxicants, house music and performance art. When characterizing these parties,
the aforementioned editor was likely thinking of a stereotypical attendee: the
muscled, hairless “circuit boy”
who devotes his expendable money and time to chasing fun from New York to San
Francisco to Sydney. That’s a considerable amount of cash. At $80 a pop, Black
and Blue tickets are prohibitively expensive—to say nothing of festival passes,
which range from $145 to $650. Add travel, fashion, fitness and chemical
expenses to this, and habitual attendance becomes a budgetary cataclysm—an
impossibility for someone with the salary of a magazine writer. It is easy to
see why the most potent criticism of the circuit, one made by homosexuals and
heterosexuals alike, is that its parties reinforce all the worst stereotypes of
gay men: they’re bourgeois, superficial, elitist. Writing
about the posters advertising Toronto’s circuit event (formerly
known as Unity, now called Pride Ball), Canadian writer Sky Gilbert had this to say: “You will
see no fat men, no old men, no feminine-looking men, no black or Asian men and,
of course, no women. What you will see instead are photos of gay male porn
stars, which means young, masculine, handsome, white and impossibly buff sluts.”

g_b What Awaits Us On The Other Side

2004-11-12 Thread ketan

What Awaits Us On The Other SideA sick man
turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and
said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side."
Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know.""You don't know? You do
not know what is on the other side?"The doctor was holding the handle of
the door; on the other side of which came a sound of scratching and whining,
and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with
an eager show of gladness.Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did
you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what
was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the
door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the
other side ofdeath, but I do know one thing...I know my Master is there and
that is enough."

g_b medicine to calm dogs during Divali

2004-11-09 Thread ketan

We help dogs in our care cope with the fear of Diwali crackers with a
homeopathic remedy called BORAX 1M. (1M refers to the potency of the
medicine). We use it in the liquid form, not as pills or powders. One "dose"
means 2-3 drops added to a small quantity of milk. Here's how we use
it:· One dose daily starting a few days before
Diwali. (Start a week in advance if your dog has a really extreme fear of
crackers). The dose can be given at night.· Two doses
daily, morning and night, the day before Diwali.·
Three doses on Diwali - morning, afternoon, night. ·
Discontinue after Diwali. You can give a dose if crackers are still being
burst and your dog is still frightened. Remember, homeopathic medicines
should not be touched directly by hand, so pour the drops from the cap of the
bottle or from a spoon. Milk is the only food that can be mixed with homeopathy,
so only administer the medicine an hour before or after any other food.If
for some reason you do not feed your dog milk, the medicine can be fed in a
little water (about one teaspoon). Also try not to put garlic in your pet's food
the days he takes homeopathy, it will work better. Preferably do not leave your
dog alone when the crackers are at their worst. Note: If your dog is already
taking homeopathic treatment for some other problem, it may be incompatible with
this remedy. You must consult us in such a case. Please call us on 3733433 or
2180147. We use Borax 1M on dogs at our kennel, as well as for many dogs
living on the street. We also use it on our own pet dogs and recommend it to
other pet owners. Our experience is that the fear of loud noises is considerably
reduced. Which means, even if a dog may not become totally brave and unconcerned
about the racket outside, he will at least eat and behave more normally. We
would welcome your feedback, do call or mail us.The

g_b The story of a teacup....

2004-11-07 Thread ketan

The Story of the Tea
CupThere was a couple who went to
England to shop in a
beautiful antique store. They both liked antiques and pottery, and especially
teacups.Spotting an exceptional cup, they asked "May we see that?
We've never seen a cup quite so beautiful.As the lady handed it to them,
suddenly the teacup spoke, "You don't understand." It said, "I have not always
been a teacup. There was a time when I was just a lump of red clay.
My master took me and rolled me, pounded and patted me over and over, and I
yelled out, 'Don't do that. I don't like it! "Let me alone," but he
only smiled, and gently said, "Not yet!!"Then. WHAM! I was
placed on a spinning wheel and suddenly I was spun around and around and
around. 'Stop it! I'm getting so dizzy! I'm going to be sick!"
I screamed. But the master only nodded and said, quietly, "Not yet."He
spun me and poked and prodded and bent me out of shape to suit himself and
then...Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat.I yelled and
knocked and pounded at the door. 'Help! Get me out of here!' I could
see him through the opening and I could read his lips as he shook his head from
side to side, "Not yet."When I thought I couldn't bear it another minute,
the door opened. He carefully took me out and put me on the shelf, and I
began to cool. Oh, that felt so good! 'Ah, this is much better,' I
thought. But, after I cooled, he picked me up and he brushed and painted
me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. 'Oh,
please; Stop it, Stop it!!' I cried. He only shook his head and
said. "Not yet!".Then suddenly he put me back in to the oven.
Only it was not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I !
just knew I would suffocate.I begged. I pleaded. I
screamed. I cried. I was convinced I would never make it. I
was ready to give up. Just then the door opened and he took me out and
again placed me on the shelf, where I cooled and waited ... and waited,
wondering what's he going to do to me next? An hour later he handed me a
mirror and said "Look at yourself." And I did. I said, 'That's not me; That
couldn't be me. It's beautiful. I'm beautiful!" Quietly he spoke: "I
want you to remember, then," he said,"I know it hurt to be rolled and
pounded and patted, but had I just left you alone, you'd have dried up."
"I know it made you dizzy to spin around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you
would have crumbled." "I know it hurt and it was hot and disagreeable in the
oven, but if I hadn't put you there, you would have cracked." "I know the fumes
were bad then brushed and painted you all over, but if I hadn't done that, you
never would have hardened. You would not have had any colour in your
life. If I hadn't put you back in that second oven, you wouldn't have
survived for long because the hardness could not have held. Now you are a
finished product. Now you are what I had in mind when I first began with
you."The moral of this story is this:God knows what He is doing in
each of us. He is the potter, and we are His clay. He will mould us
and make us, and expose us to just enough pressures of just the right kinds that
we may be made into a flawless piece of work to fulfill His good, leasing and
perfect will. So when life seems hard, and you are being pounded and
patted and pushed almost beyond endurance; when your world seems to be spinning
out of control;when you feel like you are in a fiery furnace of trials;
when life seems to "stink", try this...Brew a cup of your favourite
tea in your prettiest teacup, sit down and think on this story and then, have a
little talk with the Potter.

  Specialized Search Engines and Directories

There are approximately zillions of specialized search engines out
there, as can be seen at Search Engine Guide. The list below is a selective
subset of these, chosen because they might help you find materials
useful as resources in a WebQuest. All of these
links lead to sites that contain specific information that may not turn
up when you do a general search of the Web using Altavista, Yahoo, and
other search engines and directories. For a more comprehensive list, you

Subject: gay parties

Hi,

I would suggest that the next gay parties be arranged around the Juhu area,
Mumbai. Its more comfortable and convenient. Also I would suggest that the entry
fee of Rs.450/- per head may be increased to Rs.500/- as gays should not
misunderstand that their qualities r cheap.

Thanks,
David.

[gay_bombay] Fw: Should you say to a sexual partner if you are HIV+

2004-09-29 Thread ketan
I have not followed the discussion thread on this subject closely, however
here is my take-

1. Be honest- to yourself and your partner. Honesty is the best virtue you
can get to a relationship

2. Being HIV+ is no different from any other suffering. No big deal if you
have it.

3. Not disclosing your HIV status and having unprotected sex is like
committing murder, and

4. AIDS is not a homosexual diseases... please get over this.

Love to all and enjoy safe sex.

  Ketan,
  Once you have rejected my morphed photos depicting Shahrukh and
  Salman khans as Osama-bin Laden ,giving reason that they
  are offending to the sensitivities of Muslim,though as I have stated in my
  reply that there are absolutely no identifications of these actors with
  the religion ,yet you have rejected the photos and I have accepted
  that,

  but it is indeed great shock to me that the same moderator allowed
  the letter and derogatory remark on a Hindu God who are worshipped
  bycarores of Hindus considering Him as a supreme Godhead.Lord
  Kartikeya or Kumara Skanda or Murugan is first son of Lord Shiva and Maa
  Jagadamba Parvati and he is elder brother of Lord Ganesha-the presiding
  deity of our Maharastra !Here,in India we cant write about some actors or
  jocularly cant show them as Osama simply because they are Muslim while any
  stupid and senseless person can write the highly derogatory remark on some
  Hindu Gods and a Hindu moderator gives permission to this idiotic letter
  to be posted in a open message forum read by thousands !

  Does that imply that Hindus are devoid of any sensibilities and only
  Muslim have divine right to offend by any so called offending photos ?
  What sort of mentality you possessed ?Do you have any pride for your own
  mother religion- the religion which has nourished your entire
  ancestry and flow in your blood,yet you are worries about the
  sensitivities of an alien religion and totally senseless about your own
  Gods,Goddesses and fellow co-religionists ?

  Here with,as a Hindu I am taking strong objection to the writing of
  the letter.You has always claimed to be a just moderator and I too,have
  accepted it in the case of ' morphed Osama Bin laden pics',but surely and
  certainly you have goofed here by allowing these writings which is totally
  contrary to your declared policy (see your letter at the end of this
  letter) and you needed to be an apologetic,if you are not a hypocrite and
  follows double standard.Even wise and truly secular Muslim like Sahil Khan
  has expressed his disgust at the content of this letter and has demanded
  an explanation from you as the moderator.

  If you want,you can post this letter to the message forum.

[gay_bombay] Are you a call centre worker? Beware!

2004-09-15 Thread ketan

Are you a call centre worker? Beware!September 15,
2004
As part of my profession, I need
to visit all types of organisations and often need to work with clients till
late in the night.
Last April, on one such visit, I stepped out of the
offices of one of my clients who are handling voice and non-voice transactions
of a foreign bank and wanted to wind up our discussions over dinner. So, I
politely asked some of my client officers to join me for dinner. When more than
one of them gave the excuse of headache and body ache as the reason for not
joining in, I quipped mischievously that their clients are probably outsourcing
body pain also to them.
I realised much later that the matter is not a topic
for poking fun, but a very serious thing indeed. I felt sorry for being so
insensitive.
Work has been the very focus of human existence. Even
for philosophers like Kahlil Gibran work made the difference between a mere
existence and living. In Indian ethos, work always occupied an elevated place as
a path to salvation. In every civilised society, work is seen as a factor that
makes every individual contribute by adding value to the society.
But, for the first time, work is now being redefined
as an end in itself by the business process outsourcing firms. An army of young
men and women sweat out their valuable days and nights in activities that do not
add value to the society in which they live.
This has made work as a means of only earning money
and having no other larger meaning. It is for sociologists to dwell upon this
development and draw lessons for the Indian youth. I am more concerned about the
individual who works in a BPO unit and the deprivation which he or she is
undergoing, and do not intend to get into the sociological aspects as
yet.
Owing to the 10-hour time difference between the
Western hemisphere, particularly the United States, and India, almost all Indian
back-office operations have to work at shifts typically running from 5 p.m. to 3
a.m. to coincide with the daytime office hours in the United States.
It is this working at nights that requires adjusting
the biological clock and social practices to a different time, which is turning
out to be a major cause for health-related and social problems.
The data published by a reputed United Kingdom source
says that 40 percent of the employees working in BPOs have eye problems. This
problem is more acute with the team leaders who need to come in early and go
back late.
Typically, for call centres handling bank customers,
say from Europe, the team leader may have to stay till midnight though typically
his day starts at 10 am. The British government has now included call centre
employees in the high-risk category for eye diseases. Comparatively, software
programmers are a happy lot as they can break the VDU (visual display unit)
gazing at will.
Digestive disorders are common among employees in
BPOs. A total of 34 percent of employees had complaints on this count as
revealed by a survey.
One of the common refrains of human resource
executives of BPOs to attract young people is to publicise the fact that they
have a 24-hour cafeteria. For people used to the shabby industrial canteens of
India, the canteens of BPOs seem a world apart. They do not serve the usual fare
of usal or uttappam, but offer exotic dishes.
A new logistics industry has grown around the call
centre/BPO industry to cater to the taste buds of staffers. But like in every
thing else, the managers of BPOs have been careless.
A captive multinational company centre in India
suddenly found a high incidence of gastroenteritis cases on its hands last year
and initially brushed it off to unhygienic habits of employees. Till it found
that the food being brought to the centre came in large steel drums to keep it
hot for its over 1,000 employees for 4 to 5 hours. At that temperature bacteria
thrive and they did.
The latest finding is truly shocking. Studies point
out that people who work in the call centre industry are facing the possibility
of losing their voice. The problem known earlier as 'the teacher syndrome' is
now being found in the young workers of call centres. Some of them may face the
acute manifestation of this in the form of permanent loss of voice.
As usual, there are people who come up with counter
arguments. Almost all point at the happy environment and the enjoyable
surroundings they provide. But they do not want to accept that this happiness is
not 'happiness' at all, but only a brief prelude to many sicknesses about which
we are blissfully unaware.
We have read in fiction about a sizeable section of
the population being kept 'happy' so that they will readily give away their
freedom or their precious life. But, this is not fiction like the Orwellian
Animal Farm. It is a fact and a brutal one at that.
In times of war, young people go to battle knowing
fully well all the risks but they understand that it is a sacred duty

[gay_bombay] gay parties and commerce in mumbai

2004-09-09 Thread ketan

Pink may be pretty, but
  Mumbai won't admit itANIL SADARANGANITIMES NEWS NETWORK[ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2004 01:19:13
  AM ]

Bombay Times
finds that city nightspots
are cagey about admitting to having a gay clientele

Tracking the 'pink rupee' on a night-out can be quite elusive. For the
uninitiated, the pink rupee is the term coined for money spent by the gay
community, much like the pink pound in London. In a city of over 15
million people, Mumbai's nightclubs maintain that all their clients are straight
and people are strictly screened before entry. "Once you allow gays, you may
risk losing regular clients," says a partner at a South Mumbai nightclub.
Echoing this sentiment are most discos around town. The owner of a suburban
disco maintains, "We do get our regular gay clientele, but we don't encourage
more." But many gays who party regularly term it a joke. "We go to
regular nightclubs and no one stops us." How come? "Well, if you go in groups or
with a lady friend, no one's asking if you're gay or straight," says Shiv (32).
"In the first place, not all gays are open about their sexuality. Secondly, it's
not like they're disrobing each other or behaving badly! It's about having a
good time." And they are good spenders too! "Could be anywhere from Rs 1,500 per
head to Rs 3,000 a night. That's a decent night out," says Shiv's friend Vicky.
But it's a sticky topic for nightspots. While they grudgingly admit that
the gay spend has potential, they can't overtly encourage it. "Stags, whether
straight or otherwise, are strictly not allowed. But, gay or straight, you have
to follow club rules," maintains a South Mumbai nightclub. Rules? "We don't want
guys having scenes with other guys. No untoward, vulgar behaviour."
Another disco at Colaba insists that they are liberal in terms of entry
but don't organise special drag nights or 'king and queen' events. "We have a
policy against stags, but we DO NOT discriminate. In fact, many members
entertain their guests here, who may be gay." But there are nightspots
which have been cashing in on the pink rupee. Like this place in Juhu. "We
realised it's good business, so we started hosting gay nights," says the
manager. "We don't have drag acts or anything, but our earnings on such nights
is better than others -- from Rs 600 per head to Rs 3,000." Yet, the
question remains, will regular nightclubs ever encourage the gay spend? "Maybe
15 years on, when they're more readily accepted," says a nightclub owner.

Gay and

Aclub featuring
gay night has one peculiar quality — a desperate nightclub owner.
Desperate because the gay night is not evidence of
progressivism — it is a sign of dwindling finances.For the
owner, it is Sunset Boulevard: with himself as protagonist, disco
strobes as light design, and gay men as crooning extras.
With stiff competition, Cinderella deadlines, exorbitant
taxes, and a hostile police force — heterosexual club culture in
Mumbai is treading on thin ice. Which is where gay men come skating
in. Priced anywhere between Rs 400 to Rs 500 per head,
and with a guaranteed turnout of around 250 to 400 people, a gay
night offers financial relief for a passé dance club.
Three years ago, Swig (nee Earthquake pub) hosted gay nights
before resorting to becoming a dance bar. Last year Mikanos, the
white elephant of Mumbai club life started hosting gay nights.
Within months, Mikanos shut down.

Sources who wish to be
unnamed reveal that lakhs worth of taxes/license fees still remain
unpaid. In 2003, Red Light started ‘metrosexual’ Thursdays before
firing its management. Sunny Sara of Red Light says,
“Despite trying everything, Red Light just wasn’t doing well. The
decision to host metrosexual nights must have been a promotional
initiative by the earlier team before it was replaced this March.”
A current example of the pink jinx is Tres Botas. With an
overpriced menu, word was already out that Tres was heading for
bust. Soon enough, the gay nights started. The chic décor
notwithstanding, gay men felt exploited with its inflated prices and
abandoned it. A few days after, it was reported that

VENUE:
Conference Room,
National College,
Linking Road,
Bandra West
Mumbai 400 050

DIRECTIONS
It is about 10 minutes walk from Bandra Station or minimum rickshaw fare.
Almost at the beginning of Linking Road, Opp Pamposh Restaurant.

Contribution : Entry is free. The event is entirely sponsored by GayBombay.
However individual voluntary contributions are welcome.

FILMS to be SCREENED :

BOYS LIFE 4 - 40 min / US / 2003
This popular series of compiled short films about modern gay life gets its
fourth installment with BOYS LIFE 4: FOUR PLAY. From this collection we are
screening 2 short films of a combined duration of around 40 min -
(a) Brian Sloan's BUMPING HEADS - a bittersweet tale about an older man who
gets involved with a troubled twentysomething.
(b) Eric Mueller's THIS CAR UP - an imaginatively filmed exploration of the
budding attraction between two opposites in an office building elevator

MANY PEOPLE MANY DESIRES - documentary by V.Jaishri for Sangama / 40 min
The film is really comprehensive - we get a full picture of the queer
community from lesbians, gays, transgendered people, hijras, kotis. The
communities shown also cut across all classes and language groups.
A very pleasant surprise is how many of the people shown let themselves be
filmed openly . . . .
For the full review by Vikram go to

 ~~~ 1st Tea Break - 15 min ~~~
STRAWBERRY  CHOCOLATE - 105 min / Cuba- Spanish / 1993
This acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film set in Cuba follows the unlikely
friendship between David (Vladimir Cruz), an uptight conservative, and Diego
(Jorge Perrugoria), his flamboyantly gay neighbor. At first David balks at
Diego's anti-Castro leanings (which have grown especially strong in light of
the government's suppression of homosexuality). However, David soon finds
irresistible Diego's access to American contraband (magazines, alcohol,
etc.), and with the help of a vivacious neighbor, they negotiate their
disappointments and ultimately find the pleasures of life. Combining drama
with a bit of humor, this film provides a light, but realistic look at the
Cuban Revolution, government persecution of marginalized groups, and the
tendency of human kindness to overcome hardship.
 ~~~ 2nd Tea Break - 30 min ~~~

MAMBO ITALIANO - 90 min / Italy / 2003
Maria and Gino's world is shattered when their son decides to get a place of
his own. What is so wrong with living with your parents until you get
married? they ask . . . but Nino and Angelo are more than just roommates -
they're lovers! All hell breaks loose. The boys must be shown the right path
to acceptable behaviour. The battlefield is cleared is cleared, and tutta
la famiglia goes to war!
Mambo Italiano is hysterically funny and deeply moving. Adapted from the
successful play by the same name, the movie explores further the subtleties
and complexities of this quintessentila Italian family-a family straddling
the cultures, traditions, and mores of the old and new worlds.

NOTE:
Walking in and out during screenings has become a big nuisance.
Though guys coming slightly late can be condoned, the bane of the festivals
are those walking in and out to answer their cell phones. Some of them are
seen to repeatedly go out and return, quite unconcerned with the disturbance
they are causing.

We request people to PLEASE SWITCH OFF their CELL phones during the
screenings. Anyone who walks out during the screening will not be allowed
inside, until the next break. Doors will be locked once the screening
begins.

~~~
1. The films will are excellent original copies on DVD  VHS.
2. The films are NOT pornographic. Only good, clean gay films.
3. GB as a support group, has created this comfort space/event for gays,
many of whom may be newbies (those still coming to terms with their
sexuality and who have mustered courage to come for such a meeting for the
first time). So we request you to be sensitive to the comfort levels of
others attending this event and behave and dress accordingly.
[gay_bombay] From Relationship To Partnership
2004-08-23 Thread ketan
From RelationshiptoPartnership
by Paul Brenner, M.D., Ph.D.and
Donna Martin, M.A.
Successful close relationship either starts as, or evolves into, a
partnership. Unfortunately, many relationships end up focused on differences and
so are based on a certain amount of friction, competition, and tension. Our
intimate live-in relationships offer us a constant reminder of the work we still
have to do. If we are successful, we can transform an ordinary relationship into
the precious gift of partnership.
How does a relationship move from the early courtship phase, through the
difficult relationship phase, into a creative partnership?
Courtship brings out our playfulness. During this phase there is often an
intimate sharing, where even parts of our shadow are sometimes exposed as we
test each other's degree of acceptance. Mixed in with these hidden parts are our
childhood gifts. Attracted to similar qualities in each other, we feel a sense
of belonging -- a recognition of a familiar face of love. In courtship, we tend
to radiate a youthful joy that friends and family notice. We glow.
When courtship moves into marriage, or other forms of live-in
relationship, things change. Living together recalls the family of origin. The
honeymoon is soon over, as the unfinished business of the past turns fun into
work. Each partner may now begin to wonder, Where did it go? Where the hell did
the love go?
The relationship can then deteriorate into a chronic relationship, held
together by tension and only momentary reminders of courtship feelings. Blame
may arise, overt or insinuated. As the unmet needs from childhood again create
dissatisfaction, the relationship may sink to the level of a "he said-she said"
battle. Usually, the partners don't see how they are projecting their childhood
unmet needs and their disowned (shadow) parts onto their mates. Then, as if by
magic, the mates may even start acting out their partner's projection. In
chronic relationships, we end up living with what we least like about ourselves,
because that is what we see in the other person.
The work at this point is to surrender expectations and attachments, and
to stop blaming. We can begin to move toward partnership and truly meet each
other for the first time, as two unique individuals. As in any relationship or
partnership, disagreements will continue to occur. There are times when major
disagreements are best worked out separately, alone or with the help of a wise
friend or knowledgeable therapist.
The heat of an argument can obscure the personal insights necessary for
resolving a conflict. Time apart often helps us not only to recognize but to
admit how we participate in causing friction. With awareness, empathy, and
honesty, we can then reunite with our mates more creatively.
As we progress with our individual inner work, we move with greater and
greater ease from feeling disconnected to reunion. We start to get more out of
time alone and time together. The relationship becomes a place to play, to
relish whatever is happening in the moment, and to create works of love that
serve others. It becomes a partnership. In a partnership there is a commitment
to embracing pain as well as joy. The real gift of partnership is the discovery
of play.
As we have seen, the childhood experience of love and pain is difficult to
understand. In the attempt to create meaning out of this paradox, the child can
make wrong assumptions that have long-term consequences. One assumption is that
certain gifts always come at the cost of certain hurts or unmet needs; another
is that love hurts or that love cannot be trusted. As a child, you might have
thought you were unworthy or unlovable. These assumptions become the basis of
your adult reality.
Let's look again at the whole picture of your childhood gifts and hurts.
Look for paradoxes: between the gifts, for example (creating a kind of
paralysis), or between the hurts (creating a sense of victimization, no matter
what happens). Can you see the source of some of your own assumptions?
If you experienced a repetition of painful events in your childhood,
powerful memory patterns were probably stored for retrieval at a later date. Any
similar event that matches even a trace of a given memory can recall the entire
emotional charge associated with that memory! This phenomenon is one source of
post-traumatic stress syndrome. Remembering emotional and physical pain has been
a key to our survival as a species; unfortunately, this kind of instant recall
can be a real obstacle to intimacy. We all make inaccurate assumptions at times,
and these distort our reality.
As children, if we had two separate but simultaneous experiences, we
tended to assume that they were linked. We then came to expect this combination
to be repeated elsewhere in life. If one part of the equation is missing, we
assume the other is missing, too. If one is present, we assume the other is
present. Our
[gay_bombay] Gifts of Solitude
2004-08-21 Thread ketan
Gifts of
Solitude
by Zenith Henkin Gross
Americans are deeply ambivalent
about the solitary person in our midst. On the one hand, the lone hero is much
admired in national folklore -- the cowboy alone on the ridge at sunset, the
daring adventurer on the road (most often a man, but in contemporary life, women
also, as seen in the wonderful 1991 film Thelma and Louise) -- all free of bonds. There's been a kind of romantic
admiration for the loner, sometimes with a pal, who strikes out, independent and
self-reliant, roaming the backroads and having adventures that can only come to
those who are unfettered and isolate.
On the other side of our
ambivalence is the belief that to be alone, even temporarily, is to have been
abandoned and to be sunk in a black misery of loneliness. This is understood to
be particularly dreadful for women, many of whom have been, for most of their
lives, so busy dealing with life on behalf of what feels sometimes like
multitudes of people that to be alone must, it is argued, feel like a
soul-shattering desertion by fate.
As many older women can wryly
testify, a little alone time after lifetimes of juggling work and family is not
quite the sentence to desperation that men, especially, have outlined for them.
It is believed that it was a male physician who coined the term "empty nest" to
refer to the time when a women's child care responsibilities had shifted (they
never end) to adult children, and then, often, to
grandchildren.
For many women, the period when
there are no more children at home has poignant moments of nostalgia, to be
sure, but most survive nicely, feeling more the emotion sung in the civil rights
anthem, "free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, free at
last."
Five Steps to
Harvesting the Fruits of Solitude
Becoming friendly with ourselves
alone is a gradual learning program that includes these steps:
1. Move toward wholeness by grounding yourself in a basic
idea: all human beings need some kind of human connection that includes a degree
of intimacy. No one can exist in health as a hermit or recluse, except perhaps
the most productive of geniuses and even they always seemed to know how to get a good dinner at a
friend's house.
But given the probability that most older women will
have someone -- children, grandchildren, friends, colleagues -- with whom some
portion of their life can be shared, a certain comfort immediately appears
because, in truth, one is not completely alone in the world. There are even many
settings in which colleagues provide a great deal of needed human connection --
the armed forces, company workplaces, offices, institutions, and organizations
of all kinds.
2. Take a fresh look at the phenomenon of solitude
itself. Of course, voluntary solitude is much to be desired, but given the
circumstances of older women, involuntary solitude is more likely, and so the
task of finding one's "self" is part of the process of exploring the benefits
that developing a capacity for solitude might yield.
3. Embrace the alone time, and consider it beneficial.
It might help you tap into the creativity that exists to some degree in
everyone; it need not be as formally structured as picking up a brush to paint
or sitting at the piano to compose. However, solitude can allow a return to
creative, imaginative pursuits that have been abandoned since childhood. Women
who always meant to learn a musical instrument, or make pottery, or keep a
journal or a diary, or study languages are, sometimes quite suddenly, able to
imagine a self that does those things in a pleasurable solitary
pursuit.
4. Maximize the possible gifts flowing from your
burgeoning capacity for solitude, gifts that include the chance to sort things
out, especially after a loss. There is a certain amount of grief work, for
widows and for all who have lost close intimates, that has to be done alone. It
is wonderful to have the comfort of friends and family, but, in the end, the
widow must lie alone in the dark and begin to come to terms with loss, as must
the newly-divorced or those separated in any way from a world they once knew.
These slow approaches to healing cannot all be experienced in the company of
others, no matter how much reassurance and help they provide. And the solitude
necessary for sorting things out also applies to other important life decisions,
notably moving away from home, changing jobs and careers, and dealing with
disappointment and betrayal -- all benefit from alone time, no matter how useful
it is to talk to partner, friend, or therapist.
5. Develop a true understanding of yourself and work
on your ideas and deepest beliefs. Getting to know one's deepest feelings,
opinions, and attitudes is one of the hardest tasks of living -- at any age --
but it becomes more and more necessary as we age so that we can shape our "third
age" in a way that gives us the most serenity and pleasure.
Pushkin case: Activists
  slam sensationalisationTIMES NEWS NETWORK[ FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2004 02:51:53 AM
  ]
NEW DELHI: In a sharp reaction to media reports on
homosexuality, following Pushkin Chandra and his friend Kuldip's
murder in Anand Lok, a gay rights group on Thursday said the whole
incident had been sensationalised.
There
were rich pickings for those who hissed about the underbelly of gay life what
with the murdered couple found in the midst of a scatter of risque polaroid
photographs. Perfect grist for those who subscribe to the stereotype
that gay men are promiscuous and have little else on their minds. But if
there is some cold solace to be drawn from this gruesome crime and the resulting
sleaze offensive, it is that the murder was most probably not a gay-hate crime
but the result of a personal fallout. This wasn't like the Matthew
Shephard case, where he was tied to a fence post in freezing Wyoming
temperatures, pistol whipped and left to die primarily because he was gay.
As activists like Mumbai's Ashok Row Kavi have never tired of repeating,
Indians are not homophobic, and that it was the repressive British Victorian
ethic that introduced Section 377 making homosexuality a crime. Sure,
the average Indian may have no desire to look homosexuality in the eye—sexuality
of any kind is treated as shiftily—but there is also no desire to kill or maim
those whose sexuality may flow to a different current. "Homosexuality
has been essayed in several optimistic forms down the ages," says Kavi. "From
the Kama Sutra to frescoes in ancient temples portraying same-sex love."
Although there may not be hate killings it is hardly a happy,
all-embracing scene for the gay community in India, not least because of the
police, who are notorious for extorting money from gay couples in public parks
and at seafronts. Gay men and women point to two ostensibly
contradictory trends—on the one hand, society has begun to make fleeting if
furtive eye contact; on the other attacks and extortion attempts have increased.
But perhaps there is no contradiction. The rise in homophobia parallels
efforts by the community to be more aggressive about its rights and shake a
reluctant society into acknowledging that it exists. We are no longer
content with being left alone, is the message, if the price we have to pay is
invisibility. What better indication than the Lesbian-Gay pride march
that took place in Kolkata on June 27 to mark the Stonewall Riots of 1969 when
homosexuals in New York decided to fight police injustice? Even five
years ago, a march like this with cross-dressers out in full tilt would have
been unthinkable in India, but the unthinkable has now happened and what's more,
in the still conservative environs of Kolkata. "Repeal Section 377,"
said banner on banner. Perhaps the sharpest hook that has yanked this sexual
minority into the floodlights is HIV. In Bhubaneshwar, where the issue
of homosexuality is rarely discussed in public, a former IG of prisons
Bidyabhusan Mohanty said at a seminar that condoms were being distributed in
jail to check the spread of AIDS given the gay activity within the walls.
In Hyderabad, there may be no organisation specifically devoted to gay
welfare, but health practitioners have found it necessary to reach out and
communicate on HIV-AIDS. In the process,many stereotypes have been pleasantly
broken. "Five years ago life for anMSM was demeaning," recalls Sunil
Menon who runs support group Sahodaran in Chennai. "There was abuse, blackmail,
sexual abuse and harassment. But I have slowly found a change. Chennai is still
conservative but there is a growing acceptance." He said there was even
an e-group, lgbtmadras@ yahoogroups.com. Inside the closet, it's action
stations. As gay support groups have grown, there has been a hectic rise in
inhouse activity—serious seminars on gay rights are part of it, but so are fun
things like parties, film-festivals and hanging out at local pubs. The
liberal amounts of money (called the pink pound) splashed at these dos have made
otherwise chary pub owners open their doors wide. But within the
community itself there is plenty of ambivalence about this pink or flamboyant
image. Not everyone, to use a phrase from Mahesh Dattani's Muggy Nights in
Mumbai, wants to be "as gay as a goose" and quieter members often feel the need
to distance themselves from the "dahlings" and rainbow exuberance of their
friends. Menon may be comfortable with his rings and chains but a
manager with a well-known Mumbai placement agency says that although companies
are opening up to employing gay men and women they are sometimes told to "tone
down their appearance" in deference to the corporate code. Some may see
this as an infringement of rights, others think that such demands are
Section 377 IPC, framed
in 1860, defines homosexuality as a crime. Delhi Times
examines the relevance of
this archaic law
A number of countries worldwide might have
legalised gay and lesbian rights, but India is still governed by
Section 377 of the IPC. Framed in 1860 by the British (ironically,
this law was repealed in the UK in 1967), this anachronistic law
brands consensual adult love between people of the same sex as
sodomy, and imposes punishment as extreme as life imprisonment. The
reality is that male-male sex is not uncommon in India. In fact, a
recent study reveals that close to 10 per cent unmarried men and 3
per cent married men report sex with other men. "The problem
doesn't lie only with the law but also with its interpretation. It
states that the act of being caught with someone having unnatural
sex is a criminal offence," says gay activist Shaleen Rakesh of the
Naaz Foundation, "While this could apply to heterosexual
relationships as well, the law has been misused to harass gays."
Adds Supreme Court lawyer Amit Khemka: "Yes, this law could apply
just as well to heterosexuals. It's high time Section 377 was
changed or removed, specially when sex is no longer seen as
something procreative -- it's a statement." According to
psychiatrist Samir Parikh, "Homosexuals are normal humans attracted
to their own gender. Relationships are defined by comfort levels and
not societal sanctions. Moreover, according to medical opinion,
sexual orientation is not a disorder. Like heterosexuality,
homosexuality is an orientation which is not unnatural. India's
legal mindset needs to change."
Sociologist Arindam Sen maintains that the law
must be in consonance with the increasing permissiveness of society
towards homosexuals. "If laws are supposed to represent
socially-acceptable dos and don'ts, then a new mindset is needed.
Otherwise, normal human beings will continue to suffer inhuman
exploitation just because nature has nourished them with the need to
be different." To make matters, gays/lesbians have
practically no access to legal protection. "Reporting a case to the
police would amount to admitting to having had sex or what the law
calls a criminal offence," says Rakesh. Gautam Bhan, team member of
the Nigah Media Collective, reiterates that life is difficult for
gays because they are discriminated against. "The law is often used
a tool of extortion and blackmail. This makes it all the more
difficult for gays to come out in the open and accept their
alternative sexuality." Surely this is not what India
wants
[gay_bombay] Delhi gays seek to gain acceptance
Delhi gays seek to gain
acceptance
NDTV CorrespondentFriday, August 20,
2004 (New Delhi):
Last week's double murder in the capital, of two men believed
to be homosexuals, has brought into focus a community of people striving to gain
acceptance by society. While in many other countries, there are avenues
for gay people to meet each another, in India, it's not so open.The
'different' lifeNDTV discovered the risks and pressures that gay men
face in the city. One such person, Ranvir, always knew that he was different.
Even as a little boy he was attracted to men which often earned him
scorn from friends and neighbours."When I was small I used to dress up
in frocks and those men who knew, used to tempt me with two or three rupees and
do bad things with me," said one man. Prejudiced lotFrom
a humble background, he lives in central Delhi and still encounters prejudice
for being gay. His family knows about his sexual preference and though
they haven't rejected him, ten years ago he was asked to move into a room
outside the family home."I would like to live with my family but that is
not possible," said Ranvir.While Ranvir shares an uneasy relationship
with his family, his friend Satya is frightened to tell his family that he is
gay. Instead, he chooses the risky way of meeting like minded people for
which he has to transform twice a week. "The law is blind. They should
see what is happening. Every one sees us in the wrong light," said
Satya.Looking for companySeveral times a week Satya makes
the trip to Delhi's Connaught Place where he tries to flag down a companion for
the night. While he claims that he is not a commercial sex worker, he
does not mind if people are willing to pay him.But Satya says some even
get forceful and one gentlemen even tells him that he is an undercover
policeman.According to a study, as many as 7,000 men in Delhi work as
commercial sex workers and while Satya may be treading a thin line, it is clear
that there are a large number of men who solicit the company of other
men.Whether it's the men in khakee or abusive clients, few gay men or
male sex workers have any protection and are open to exploitation.
New Delhi: It’s not easy,
but the times they are a-changin’. Same-sex relationships in the Capital might
still raise a few eyebrows, but gradually, they seem to be gaining wider
acceptance. Besides
evolving social attitudes, factors like the advent of the Internet have helped
facilitate more people ‘come out of the closet’. ‘‘It is much easier to connect
with likeminded people,’’ says Manish Rao, who is in a homosexual relationship.
Though,
most people involved in same-sex relationships say that they hang out at city
hot spots across the board, areas like the Nehru Park, Palika Bazaar, Jahanpanah
Forest, Dhaula Kuan bus stand, India Gate lawns are some of the spots most
frequented by them for ‘cruising’. ‘‘Cruising is not about seeking a partner
necessarily for sex, it could even be as simple as ‘can I buy you a drink?’,’’
says Rajiv Singh. Others
like Rajneesh Kumar recall: ‘‘Earlier, it was just not possible to rent a place
of your own. Now, there are people who are willing to accept that.’’
The
situation is, however, relatively difficult for lesbians, what with the gender
gap making its presence felt here as well. Sheetal Sharma, a south Delhi-based
entrepreneur says: ‘‘Everybody knows I am a lesbian, but nobody is bothered
about it. My partner and I frequent all the hot joints on weekends.’’
Singh
says that Delhi is the ‘gay capital of India’ and that Mumbai is much more
‘anti-gay’. ‘‘This has been the case ever since the Mughal times. Noorjehan
wanted to marry off her daughter Ladli to Khurram’s younger brother who was
known to have had affairs with men. The matter was discussed in court and it was
Noorjehan who got the flak for being ambitious for her daughter,’’ he says.
names have been changed)
[gay_bombay] some more stories on the gay murders that have rocked the lgtb community in delhi
2004-08-15 Thread ketan
Pushkin Chandra, one of the victims of the Anandlok double homicides, seems
to have led a dangerous other life, say investigators. By day, he was a
development officer with USAID; after work, though his world was very
different.
Then, Pushkin hooked onto a network of strangers who emerged from the shadows
of lanes and parks. People who seemed to have nothing in common with the
well-to-do, MBA-holding professional but their sexual orientation.
At the centre of the murder mystery are three of Pushkin's "new friends". All
of them accompanied him to an upscale party the night before the murder. Two
seem to have disappeared. The third, Vishal, was killed along with Pushkin. But
bar his name, there's very little the police have on the dead man.
Except that he fit a profile. The police found none of Vishal's clothes in
the room — he was wearing a pair of Pushkin's Bermudas. But they found a pair of
tattered unbranded shoes in the room that belonged to him. Vishal, it appeared,
was one of those men Pushkin was in the habit of picking up from gay hangouts
like Nehru Park or Sanjay Park or Sangam cinema. Several polaroid photographs of
such men — either in the nude, or engaged in sexual acts — were found at the
crime scene.
Pushkin's friends in the NGO circuit knew about — and disapproved of — his
habit of picking up prostitutes and smuggling them into his house or taking them
to parties.
In the present instance, Pushkin and his friends had gatecrashed into a party
thrown by Danish national Uffe Garten. They left at four in the morning. A few
hours after that Pushkin and Vishal were dead.
=
Police are piecing together clues and evidence, including photographs
seized from slain Pushkin Chandra’s outhouse, to zero in on two unidentified men
who had accompanied Chandra and his partner to a party late on Friday night.
Sleuths probing the murders of 38-year-old Chandra, who worked for
USAID, and Vishal, said the two men held the key to the killings that rocked the
Capital on Saturday. Most of the photographs found from Pushkin’s pad belonged
to homosexuals like him.
The theory gaining ground is that the murders were a “crime of passion”,
which have brought to the fore the murky affairs of same sex relationships in
the Capital.
Pushkin’s friends who attended the party told police that they saw the duo
for the first time that night. South district police have rounded up several
male prostitutes to find more about Vishal, who was killed along with Chandra.
Police are also trying to locate Chandra’s car.
It is still not clear how Pushkin and Vishal returned home, for there is no
entry of the Opel Corsa coming back in register kept at the colony's gate.
Pushkin’s Stanchart credit card is missing. Cops feel it is with the
Cops have asked Uffe, a Dane and host of Friday’s party, to provide
Gay community grows in city
Chetan
  ChauhanNew Delhi,August
16Homosexuality is on the rise in Delhi
and so is the incidence of sexually-transmitted diseases, including AIDS.
According to the estimates of the Delhi State AIDS Control Society (DSACS),
from about 4,000 a few years ago, the number of homosexuals was estimated to be
over 7,000 in 2003. DSACS director Arun Bhoraka said many of them are from the
higher income group and come regularly to the society's 17 voluntary counselling
centres for testing. “Often they came after unsafe sex and we counsel them about
HIV/AIDS,” he said. In 2003 survey, the society identified 117 places in the
Capital, from where male homosexuals operate.
High concentrations of homosexuals were found around Delhi University,
Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, Anand Parbat, Punjabi Bagh, Amar Colony and several
other places.
Officials said farmhouses in south Delhi and the NCR satellite townships were
thriving spots for gay parties.
A possible reason for their number going up in Delhi is the easy availability
of a male partner.
The survey found that the city’s 35,000 street children made easy
prey.
New Jersey Gov. James. E. McGreevey, center, and family
(KRT Photo)Aug 12, 2004
Mystery of Jersey's first lady
BY ANN GIVENSStaff WriterStanding before the cameras Thursday
afternoon, New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey and his wife, Dina, made a baffling
pair: He announcing that he is gay, had an affair with a man, and will resign.
She, holding his hand with an indecipherable smile on her face.The
well-known governor suddenly seemed unknowable. But perhaps the bigger mystery
was the woman by his side: Was 38-year-old Dina Matos McGreevey as blind sided
as the public by her husband's announcement? And if so, how could she stand
smiling by him through this unbearably painful moment?"It depends how
long ago she found out," said Dan Forero, who heads the Straight Spouse Network
of Long Island, a support group for straight people who are married to gays. "If
she only found out two weeks ago, she was just smiling for the camera and was
probably very numb. If she's known for some years, then maybe she's made some
peace with it."A different set of rulesIt is nearly impossible
to know what is going on in Matos McGreevey's mind, or behind closed doors in
her home. Some have guessed that the McGreeveys' marriage -- his second -- was
based on convenience from the start; others believe the news was a shock to her.
Either way, a marriage in the political spotlight follows different rules than a
private relationship, experts agree.Mike Paul, president of MGP
Associates, a Manhattan-based public relations firm that has managed personal
crises for public figures, said political couples should know up front that "for
better or for worse" may mean taking very public questions about the most
intimate subjects."As a first lady, you're going to be a public figure
whether you want to be or not," Paul said. "When there's a crisis, you can't say
'No comment.'"Not unheard ofIf the McGreeveys, who met in 1997,
did have a "marriage of convenience," they would not be alone among political
couples, said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at University of
Virginia."It's more common among politicians than it is in the group of
people that I proudly call normal," Sabato said. "Ambitious people are often
attracted to one another, and in order to get power and position they are
willing to make compromises in their personal relationships."It is also
not uncommon for heterosexual people married to gay people to try and make their
relationships work, experts said.Forero, whose own marriage ended in
divorce after his wife told him she is a lesbian, said about 15 percent of
gay-straight marriages stay together. Even he thought for a time they could work
things out, he said."A lot of times they love that person, they want a
family and they think this is a way to do it," said Amity Pierce Buxton, author
of "The Other Side of the Closet: The Coming-Out Crisis for Straight Spouses and
Families" and head of the national Straight Spouse Network. "They think that
love will conquer all."But for many people, especially those who do not
know from the start that their spouse is gay, the shock is too much to get
beyond."You feel deceived," said Buxton, whose husband told her he was
gay after 25 years of marriage. "It takes a little while to face reality that
this is who they are and you can't go back to the way things were. Then you can
start healing."Some experts say it may actually have been easier for
Matos McGreevey to stand up with her husband than it would have been to speak
out against him."You don't want to make it so messy that people are
constantly wanting more comments from you," said Steven Rhoads, a professor in
the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia and the author of
"Taking Sex Differences Seriously." "Craig Schermer, a historian for the
National First Ladies' Library in Canton, Ohio, said he cannot think of a
presidential first lady who did not ultimately "stand by her
man.""Ultimately, I think most of them realized that it was a
partnership, and to expose their anger was to expose themselves," said Schermer,
citing the Clintons and the Hardings as just two couples who suffered through
extramarital affairs.But Schermer said that, as women become more
liberated and first ladies become more independent, the days of loyalty to
unfaithful spouses may come to an end."I think we're going to get to the
age when husband cheats on his wife she's going to pack up and walk out," he
said.
Just buddies: Why gals like guy friends
Asmita
  AggarwalAugust 6
  Bigger
Picture
  “Look at what she’s wearing! I can see her breasts popping out.” This
  sort of conversation between two women — passing nasty remarks about a
  third — is not uncommon. Many people genuinely believe women take great
  pleasure in finding faults with other women.
  Is this the reason why so many women prefer men as buddies — like Sarah
  Jessica Parker in Sex And The City, who always confides in her
  gay best friend played by Willie Garson? Garson told imdb.com that he
  shared a similar rapport with Parker in real life: “We’ve been dear
  friends for 20 years and she does like to talk. Obviously I don’t ask her
  about guys — I’m not gay! But she advises me on girls.”
  In the controversial book Women’s Inhumanity To Women, Phyllis
  Chesler explains why men are easier to deal with: “In school, girls are
  taught that girls are capable of being mean, they gossip and slander. They
  isolate other women.” Remember, it was a woman, Linda Tripp, who spilled
  the beans on Monica Lewinsky’s affair with Bill Clinton. Monica had
  trusted Linda and confided in her!In Trilogy Of Women, Gloria
  D. Tillis Jones says: “Women have it hard enough without being down on
  each other, suspicious, jealous and backstabbing… if women are plagued
  with problems, whom can they trust?”
  That’s the reason, V.J. Anusha says, she has more male friends: “You
  can trust them. Women are more likely to betray your trust.” B4U V.J.
  Gauhar Khan feels men are more patient and understanding. “Plus they
  aren’t competing with you over looks, career or clothes. Women are more
  prone to jealousy. Female friends have often backstabbed me,” she
says.
  Smriti Z. Irrani married her best friend’s husband Zubin who, she
  claims, was her friend. It was his easy-going attitude that she found
  attractive. “It’s easier to strike friendship with a man, the comfort
  level is higher,” she affirms.
  It’s often said that women are always checking out other women and
  constantly tend to find faults in them. Schopenheur said: “Men by nature
  are indifferent to one another, but women are by nature enemies.”
  Many women will agree. They will tell you that men do make better
  soulmates than women. There could, of course, be another view
  Olympic champion Thorpe chases his own
destiny
  Julian
Linden (Reuters)Sydney,August 6
A brush with death convinced Ian Thorpe his chosen path to
Olympic immortality was futile.Like every other swimming
prodigy of the past three decades, Thorpe's achievements are
measured against those of Mark Spitz, the American who won a record
seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games.
When Thorpe won three gold and two silver medals as a 17-year-old
at the Sydney Olympics, his destiny seemed assured.
The Australian took the bait and started to prepare himself for a
crack at the magnificent seven. The early signs were promising.
He won six gold medals at the 2001 world championships in Japan
but the events of September 11 suddenly reshaped his thinking.
Thorpe was holidaying in New York that day and was on his way to
the World Trade Center when the first hijacked plane struck the twin
towers.
The harrowing experience made him reassess his priorities and he
vowed not to waste another day of his life. After finishing with six
golds at the Commonwealth Games a year later, Thorpe abandoned his
quest of pursuing Spitz.
"It's not me," Thorpe said. "I'm not doing something to have
accolades or the recognition."Thorpe's success in Sydney had
already made him rich beyond his dreams but it came at a high price.
He is a national hero in Australia but cannot lead a normal
life.
He is mobbed by fans every time he walks down the street and his
every move is scrutinised by the media and public. Earlier this
year, he was moved to address rumours about his sexuality after
Sydney's gay community adopted him as an icon.
For the record, he said he was not homosexual but was flattered
by the description.
Thorpe's decision not to chase Spitz's record not only lifted the
pressure from him, but also helped him to clear his mind. He had
begun to tire of the grind
[gay_bombay] Confront Your Toxic Relationships
2004-08-04 Thread ketan
TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE  Taking
  Control
Confront Your Toxic Relationships
Are you afraid of confronting someone in your life who is
critical, judgmental or just can't be happy for your success? Your life
may be full of people who are draining your energy and therefore not letting you
live the life of your dreams. Life coach Cheryl Richardson helps you find out
how to identify these people and take steps to heal or end these relationships.
Toxic Qualities in PeopleSeveral types of
people deter you from your path to living a fulfilled life. Cheryl
describes six toxic qualities.
Toxic Relationships: The People
Some relationships constantly drain your
energy, in both obvious and subtle ways. Several types of people will exhaust
you or deter you from your path to living a fulfilled life. Life coach Cheryl
Richardson describes six types of toxic qualities in people. The Blamer This person likes to hear his own voice. He
constantly complains about what isn't working in his life and yet gets energy
from complaining and dumping his frustrations on you. The DrainerThis is the needy person who calls to ask for
your guidance, support, information, advice or whatever she needs to feel better
in the moment. Because of her neediness, the conversation often revolves around
her, and you can almost feel the life being sucked out of you during the
conversation. The ShamerThis person can be
hazardous to your health. The shamer may cut you off, put you down, reprimand
you, or make fun of your or your ideas in front of others. He often ignores your
boundaries and may try to convince you that his criticism is for you own good.
The shamer is the kind of person who makes you question your own sanity before
his. The DiscounterThis is the person who
discounts or challenges everything you say. Often, she has a strong need to be
right and can find fault with any position. It can be exhausting to have a
conversation with the discounter, so eventually you end up giving in and
deciding to just listen. The GossipThis
person avoids intimacy by talking about other behind their backs. The gossip
gets energy from relaying stories, opinions, and the latest "scoop." By
gossiping about others, he creates a lack of safety in his relationships,
whether he realizes it or not. After all, if he'll talk about someone else,
he'll talk about you. Test the Quality of Your
RelationshipsDetermine whether a relationship drains you or fuels
you. Ask
yourself the following questions.
Test the Quality of Your Relationships
Since soulful connections require an investment of time and energy, you'll
want to choose the people you spend time with wisely. To determine whether a
relationship drains you or fuels you, ask yourself the following questions.
  1.
  Write down the name of a person in your life.
  2.
  Am I able to be myself with this person? Do I feel
  accepted by him/her?
  3.
  Is this person critical or judgmental of me?
  4.
  Does the relationship provide an even give-and-take
  exchange of energy?
  5.
  Do I feel upbeat and energized when I'm around this
  person, or depleted and drained?
  6.
  Does this person share my values? My level of integrity?
  7.
  Is this person committed to our relationship?
  8.
  Can this person celebrate my success?
  9.
  Do I feel good about myself when I'm with this person?
Confronting Conflict with GraceIf you
feel a relationship can be healed, follow
these three steps. Plus, get the words to say to stand up to your toxic
friends and family.  Are
you confronting the negative relationships in your life? What have you done to
make them better?
[gay_bombay] saw this on the net (blog) for call centre guys--Is it worth it?
2004-08-04 Thread ketan
Is it
worth it?
In the era of software and call center boom in India.there has been a
marked difference in the day to day routines. Sometimes you wake up at 5
am for the first shift, sometimes at 11am...for the shift at 2pm
sometimeshave to leave for work at 10pm. All this to take care of
someone's problem sitting thousands of miles away. Putting up an
artificial accent and getting bombarded with rude questions from the caller.
Is it all worth it?
 Start making and not breaking your inner
resolutions. Uncover the qualities you need to develop, such as courage, taking
risks and setting boundaries. Complete the following workbook questions from Cheryl
Richardson, and reflect on your answers periodically—exploring your beliefs
about yourself and your attitude will change your life!
What do I really want for my life? When you consider this question,
  what comes to mind first? List everything that occurs to you.
What should I want? As you look over your answer to question
  #1, notice how many of the answers are based on what you're supposed to
  want. Notice and write down all that occurs to you.
Are my desires really my desires, or are they meant to please
  someone else? Review what you've written so far and notice how much of
  what you want is really for others.
What really matters to me at this time in my life?
[gay_bombay] Making Peace with Your Past
2004-08-01 Thread ketan
KNOW YOURSELF  What Do You
  Believe?
Making Peace with Your Past
 Dr. Phil says that forgiveness is what you do for
  yourself, not for other people. When you forgive, it doesn't mean that you
  approve of what's happened; instead, it means that you're giving yourself
  permission to move on with your life. Dr.
  Phil's Advice to Cope with the Past
The pain of what happened is inevitable, but continuing to suffer is
  optional.
For some people, making peace happens suddenly and spontaneously. For
  others, it takes much effort and time. There is no "right" timeline for
  recovery.
Find meaning in what happened. Discover some wisdom from your
  experience, and share it with others.
Don't expect a success-only journey. People can thrive and suffer at
  the same time.
While the pain may never completely disappear, you can find a new
  sense of strength and a renewed appreciation for life, as long as you're
  willing to make the effort.
[gay_bombay] What to Do When Life Seems Unfair
2004-07-31 Thread ketan
What to Do When Life Seems Unfair
  What do you do when nothing is going your way? Do you
  ask, "Why me?" or do you look for what your life is trying to tell you?
  How you choose to respond to the difficult things that happen to you can
  mean the difference between a life of anger…or joy. Spiritual
  counselor Gary
  Zukav says that everything happens for a reason, and that reason is
  your spiritual growth. Find out what you can do when life takes a turn
  that just doesn't seem fair.
  Get to the Heart of the Problem
  When Life Seems Unfair: Get to the Heart of the
Problem
  Take
ResponsibilityAccording to Gary Zukav, how you choose to
respond to difficult life circumstances is at the core of what life
on Earth is about. You must take genuine responsibility for:
  Who you are
  What you do
  What you contribute while you are
  hereAre You a
  Victim?If you believe that life is unjust, you are declaring
  yourself to be a victim. A victim resists her life, rather than looking at
  it realistically and moving on from that point. Consider the possibility
  that everything that happens to you is an opportunity to expand
  into a fuller potential, and a more powerful and meaningful life.
  Change Your PerceptionThinking of
  life as unfair is only one perception, and it is not necessarily the way
  your life is. Realize that while you cannot control the things that happen
  to you, you can control how you react to them.
  Take
  responsibility for yourself and your life. What Did You Do to Deserve This?Feeling
  that you're a victim may be imprisoning you in your pain.
  TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
Well-Being
  When Life Seems Unfair: Don't Be the
Victim
  Many of us tend to ask, "Why me?" when we are
experiencing some pain in life and allow ourselves to become a
prisoner of that pain.
  Trust that there may be something meaningful, powerful and
purposeful happening.
  Declaring yourself as a victim may only perpetuate the
experience and your pain.Why do bad things
  happen to good people?Gary says, "The world around you does not
  deceive you. It does not lie to you. What you experience reflects a
  creative or created impulse within you. "The question is not 'Why
  do bad things happen to good people?' There are not bad things and good
  things. There are consequences of choices made. There are effects of
  causes in which you participated. "So if you look at your life and
  say, 'But I'm a positive person, why is it that these things are now
  happening to me?' Well, there's several ways to look at this. Number one
  is, if you were to wake up in your life today, you would still experience
  what you have created in the past. This is karma. Energy is energy, and
  you cannot escape it — and there's a good reason for that."
  If you feel that the Universe is unfair, it will be unfair. No
matter what happens to you, nothing is unfair. The Universe doesn't
judge you, so why should you judge it?
  When you blame others and view yourself as a victim, you create
negative karma.
  What you see in others is what you need to see in yourself. If
you are surrounded by angry people, you are probably an angry
person, too.Shift the
  Way You See the WorldHaving
  a different outlook could take away the pain and change the course of
  your life.
  TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
Well-Being
  When Life Seems Unfair: Shift the Way You See the
World
  If you consider that there may be meaning in the
disappointments of life and that the universe is compassionate and
wise, you will be able to open yourself to authentic power—the real
power within yourself.
[gay_bombay] NYT-Indians Go Home, but Don't Leave U.S. Behind
2004-07-26 Thread ketan
Indians Go Home, but Don't Leave U.S. BehindBy AMY
WALDMANPublished: July 24, 2004
ANGALORE, India - Snigdha Dhar sat in the echoing
emptiness of her new home, her husband off at work, her 7-year-old son prattling
on about Pizza Hut. The weather outside was California balmy. Children rode
bicycles on wide smooth streets. Construction workers toiled on more villas like
hers - white paint, red roofs, green lawns - and the community center's three
pools
Six years ago, Mrs. Dhar and her husband, Subhash, a vice president at
Infosys Technologies, the Indian software giant, migrated like thousands of
Indians before them, to America's Silicon Valley and its suburban good life.
But Silicon Valley is not where their gated housing colony, Palm Meadows,
sits. Like growing numbers of professional Indians who once saw their only hope
for good jobs and good lives in the West, the Dhars have returned home to
India.
Drawn by a booming economy, in which outsourcing is playing a crucial role,
and the money to buy the lifestyle they had in America, Indians are returning in
large numbers, many to this high-technology hub.
What began as a trickle in the late 1990's is now substantial enough to be
talked about as a "reverse brain drain.'' By one estimate, there are 35,000
"returned nonresident Indians'' in Bangalore, with many more scattered across
India.
For this still developing country, the implications of the reverse migration
are potentially vast.
For decades, it has watched many of its best-educated move abroad, never to
come back. Now a small portion of that talent is returning, their influence
amplified beyond their numbers by their high-level skills and education, new
cultural perspective and, in many cases, ample wealth. They are both staffing
and starting companies, 110 of which set up shop in Bangalore in just the year
that ended in March.
In some cases, they are seeking to refashion India implicitly in America's
image. It takes leaving and returning, said Arjun Kalyanpur, a radiologist who
returned in 1999, to ask, "Why should my country be any less than the country I
was in?''
This impulse is not universally welcomed by some Indians who never left and
who see a globalized elite - many of whom now carry American passports, not
Indian - importing a Western culture as distorting in its way as British
colonialism.
Still, returned reformers are already sparking change. Srikanth Nadhamuni,
who helped design the Intel Pentium chip, is now applying his formidable skills
to designing a software platform that could revolutionize the administration of
India's local governments.
Lathika Pai, one of the few women in India's high-technology sector, is
trying to bring America's best practices for working mothers to the B2K
Corporation, her business-process outsourcing company. Others are trying to
encourage schools to teach critical thinking, or force government to be more
responsive to citizens.
S. Nagarajan, an entrepreneur, calls it "brain gain." "They have not come
back just as they went there," he said.
He came back because he saw in India the business opportunity he once saw in
America, where he struck it rich in the 1990's. The call center he and his
partners started in Bangalore in 2000 with 20 employees now has 3,600, and $30
million in annual revenues.
Others have been drawn back by the tug of family and the almost atavistic
pull of roots, or pushed by diminishing job opportunities in Silicon Valley and
tightening Americans visa regulations.
Many of them are returning to communities like Palm Meadows, whose developer,
the Adarsh Group, advertises "beautiful homes for beautiful people.'' The
liberalization of India's state-run economy over the last 13 years has spawned a
suburban culture of luxury housing developments, malls and sport utility
vehicles that is also enabling India to compete for its Americanized best and
brightest.
"It is amazing what you can get in terms of quality of life,'' Subhash Dhar
said of the India to which he and his family returned about two months ago.
Trying to Reconnect
The little girls wore dresses of rich blues and hot pinks and deep reds.
Their ankle bells tinkled as their feet smacked the floor. They cocked their
heads and bent their hands up, trying to perfect the poses of a 1,600-year-old
Indian dance form, Bharathanatyam, in the community center of a housing complex
that bore almost no trace of India.
All the girls were daughters of returnees, like Prasad Kamisetty, an Intel
employee back after 15 years, whose sonorous singing accompanied the dancers,
and Sunita Maheshwari, a pediatric cardiologist, who kept one eye on the dance
lessons and one on her 4-year-old son in the pool outside. They live in a
pastel, pastoral gated compound, Regent Place, where two-story houses with
barbecues in the backyard line a tree-shaded main lane.
Where Indian parents have long worried about how to give their children
sufficient
