Goa's appalling road sense - 1

Lack of good driving skills is one part of Goa's problem. The other is our
appalling road sense. How many licenced drivers will *halt and check* both
sides before entering a main road? How many will avoid *reversing into* a main
road? Or if wanting to turn, take to the left or the median, *well before* the
intersection? And indicate *in advance* the intention to turn, with side
blinkers or the universal hand signals any duffer behind will understand? Or
that it's not a bright idea to suddenly slow down or stop *without signaling*
the tailing traffic and, if it can be helped, slowing or stopping only on the
side shoulder and not on the carriageway?

Between poor driving skills and lack of road sense -- the conjoined twins that
primarily cause death and misery on Goa's roads -- the latter is far more
lethal. Inept driving does cause accidents, but our woeful bliss of road sense
and traffic rules is the bulk cause of road tragedy.

We shall spend some time beginning today, peering at our abysmal road
sense ... in a traffic world that makes increasing demands of a good and safe
driver. Let us begin with the troika that traffic experts the world over
regard as the biggest cause of road accidents ... over-speeding, overtaking
and tailgating (following the vehicle ahead too closely at unsafe speed.)

*Over speeding*, to my mind, goes far beyond exceeding the (often ludicrous)
speed limits prescribed by Government on Goa's roads. Did I say ludicrous?
Consider an instance: a 30 kms stretch of National Highway-17, no less,
between Panjim and Margao, bears about two dozen *speed limit 40* signboards.
Most are entirely unwarranted ... the straight and clear-sight stretch at
Cortalim, below the Verna plateau, is an example. Why a speed limit on a
causeway? Do the Australian Acacias (planted on roadsides when Dr. Willy was
PWD Minister) distract? Perhaps the KR trains hurtling in the nearby *khazan*
paddies inspire pumping the accelerator? Ha!

(More confounding is while all the boards notify the start of a speed limit,
none announce the extent or the *end* point. What is a driver uninitiated to
Goa's peculiarities to make? That the speed limit begins at the very first
board outside Panjim, or Margao, and runs all the 30-odd kilometres of the NH,
the boards in between being mere reminders?)

What I am suggesting is that one should not rely on Government-notified speed
limits alone but evolve a mindset on speed -- based on road sense,
circumstance, one's driving ability and the condition of the vehicle. One
could be well and truly be over-speeding at a mere 20 km/ph and one could
still not be speeding at 120 km/ph (if you have the nerve and sanity intact to
do that on Goa's roads, that is!)

*Over speeding,* I say at the risk of sounding duff, is ANY speed at which
circumstances demand driving/riding at a far lower speed. Driving at 20 km/ph
on Margao's Francisco Luis Gomes Road (Station Rd.) would be actually doing
a butcher's job (and at a hairpin bend on Anmod, an attempted or accomplished
suicide.) Flooring the accelerator on a straight, clear-sight, high ground
stretch (where no two- or four-legged creature can dart across in surprise),
like on Goa-Mumbai is certainly not over-speeding!

A relatively *slow* speed may actually be too *fast* if you cannot complete an
exigent maneuver, like turning or stopping, with ease. Being a subjective term
and dependent on wide circumstances, the best self test on speeding would be
to ask oneself, Would I be in effective and complete control of the vehicle
if a sudden contingency arose round the bend ... a cattle herd squatting, a
pedestrian running across, a recklessly driven vehicle coming straight at me?

If you have the slightest doubt that you may not (be in complete control of
the vehicle), then the vehicle is driving you. You ARE over-speeding! A safe
speed depends on many factors ... road conditions, weather conditions, light
conditions, condition of the vehicle, the level of driving skill and, above
all, your own road sense.

The speed bug bites everyone and everywhere, not just youngsters. Police in
California, USA, arrested Roy Rawlins for speeding at 150+ km/ph on a
controlled road. He was 104, not 24. Be it ours to be in control of our
senses, if we hope to be in control of the wheel/handlebars we wield, a
monster of great potential destructiveness as Buchanan, the revered traffic
guru, once said.

Tailpiece: I'm quizzed that this series on road deaths in Goa evokes reaction
from *outsiders* rather than Goans in Goa. Ricky Wayne, USA, presently
holidaying in Goa, gave a succinct insight on our road madness (Reader Speak,
HERALD, March 17, 2006.) A few responses on Goanet, an e-list of Goans
worldwide, to which I post the column after publication. An interesting
observation, however, came from A.P. Machado,

[Goanet] Re:Portuguese Passports

2006-03-25 Thread tonyca

Since it is said that fools rush in where angels fear to tread,
I have hitherto refrained fom entering the ongoing controversy on the
subject in this forum! However, considering my own personal experience,
I am prompted to share my views with fellow-members.
I have visited Portugal thrice - once before the end of Portuguese
rule in Goa (call it liberation, invasion or annexationas you deem fit!)
and and twice thereafter - and thoroughly enjoyed all visits made on an
Indian Passport, which I am proud to possess. Although I was born in Goa
(under Portuguese rule) and did my primary school studies in Portuguese, I
completed the rest of education in Independent India and opted for an
Indian Passport through domicile when I went to Oxford for higher studies in
1954.
It was during the summer vacation at Oxford in 1955 that I made my
first visit to Portugal on an European tour along with a group of
fellow-students
belonging to various nationalities (including american, european and
australian).
We had submitted our passports in one bunch to the Portuguese Embassy in London
for visas and, probably due to the holiday rush,I was issued a Portuguese
visa on my Indian Passport, despite the then broken diplomatic relations
between the two countries!
The Portuguese PIDE (Security and Immigration Police) were initially
very cordial at the frontier when I spoke to them in fluent Portuguese as
spokesman for our group, but their faces soon fell when they saw my Indian
Passport! It took them a good half-hour to clear up the matter with superiors
in Lisbon. It was ackward for them to refuse me entry when I had a valid
visa and all my friends refused to leave me behind and threatened to cancel
their own visit and complain to their respective governments if were all not
allowed in.
When I made my two subsequent visits to Portugal after 1988, quite
a few of my relations and friends assumed that I would be applying for a
Portuguese Passport, considering the fact that I was born in Goa under
Portuguese rule (in 1930!) and had completed my primary studies in Portuguese.
They could not understand my reluctance to do so and to retain my Indian
Passport, when practically every Tom, Dick and Harry was willing to give
his eye-teeth to acquire one!
I have no quarrel with my fellow-Goans or any others wishing to
acquire Portuguese citizenship and a Portuguese Passport and fully appreciate
and sympathise with the compulsions that drive them to do so. Let us admit
that these compulsions are largely economic and there is no need for them
to trumpet their loyalty to Portugal and to denigrate India and things Indian
in order to justify their actions.
I have no doubt that if citizenship of Timbutku and a Timbutku Passport
conferred the same benefits as a Portuguese one, the queue for obtaining
such a Passport would be equally large!
Satyameva Jayate!

Re: [Goanet] Heinous crimes not unknown to Goa

2006-03-25 Thread floriano
My cousin Wolfango Lobo (Wolfao to us) was murdered by a family trio over a
fishing dispute. He was 24. The year was 1959. This makes its during the
Portuguese regime. I was aprox 11-12 years old.
There would have been 3 deaths but the other two (all cousins but not
brothers, including Wolfao) survived.

The perpetrators were caught trying to escape to Belgaum within hours of the
crime, tried and sent to Aguada jail.

The short and sweet trial was a sensation in the village of Moira. The
entire act of the crime was enacted at the scene of the crime, just like in
the films with the criminals as actors and substitutes for the victims, one
having been burried and the other two in the hospital.

The scene was that Wolfao's house was stoned at the dead of the night. All
were sleeping in Wolfao's house as his mother was away.
Wolfao went to investigate, cautioning others not to follow. As he was
running, the culprits who were hiding behing the rubble fence (200 meters
from the house) alerted him of their presence by dislogding a fence boulder.
He came running back. They chopped him with Koitas and dumped him inside
the fence.

As there was no sign of Wolfao, Ciriaco went to investigate. He was done
and dumped over Wolfao. After another gap of time David went to investigate
and he too was done and dumped over the duo.

The alarm was raised by Wolfao's kid brother at home when none returned.
They found them all bloodied and heaped together full of red ants (Umule)

Wolfao died on the way to the hospital.

The ringleader got a lifer and the other two lesser jail terms.
Come liberation (December 19, 1961) all walked out to celebrations and
rejoicing. We were Free.

It was Frdom.
Most of the criminals of those days are today's pensioned
Frdom fighters getting looked after with our tax-money.

Makes me a little bit bitter.

Last week Jose Colaco enumerated some terrible crimes
in Goa. But a reminder to a ghastly crime in Goa took
place more than 3 decades ago.

Gurunath the paper boy chucks the Navhind Times on a
cool Sunday morning to our second floor balcony and in
36p Times Roman one reads 'Double Murder in
 Caranzalem'.

A lady and her daughter were brutally murdered and
packed in tin suitcases. It was Police Inspector
Dhaimode who kicked open the suitcases after
neighbours complained about the stench coming from a
house in a place called Kerrant, Caranzalem, Ilhas.
The victims husband was away in Bombay working, the
cook was a person from the new regime and Belgao. It
is believed that the perpetrator took articles from
the house. After a six month police investigation the
person Kumar was arrested in Belgao.

Kumar received the death penalty and was hanged in
Aguada jail in 1980 not by his feet but by his neck.

What have Goans learnt from this heinous act? Today
Pe. Ferrao was killed. How many more Goans are going
to suffer this similar fate at the hands of those from
 the new regime?

[Goanet] NRI delegation

2006-03-25 Thread gilbertlaw
To make any effort a success, one needs to set UNITED AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS (as
the Kerala NRI).
PRIOR to the delegation's visit, the groundwork needs to be laid.
AT THE VISIT, a clear plan should be developed with a TIME-TABLE FOR ACTION for
each issue.
AFTER the visit, at REGULAR PERIODS an assessment of the progress needs to be
undertaken by individuals who led the efforts.
No good result is achieved by sitting back and expecting success.
One gets back proportion to the efforts one puts in.
Kind Regards, GL

Eugene Correia
I was informed by someone here in Dubai about the delegation's visit. Godfrey
who pointed out the non-benefit of such a visit. Having attended one Goan NRI
meet in Goa two years ago, I am convinced nothing much will be achieved.

Kerala NRI meet, and found their main problems relate to cheap flights to
Kerala, the job and medical security in the Gulf, and NRI remittances. Some of
these have been addressed by the Indian government.

[Goanet] Re: Public execution -Deterrent effect of the Death Penalty

2006-03-25 Thread cornel
Carmo

Further to your post to Jose below, irrespective of whether Jose is a devout
Catholic or not, and irrespective of whether Jose accepts the Bible texts as
supplied by you, or not, India does have, and does use, the death penalty by
hanging. Justice will therefore normally be done in Goa/India irrespective
of those who find the death penalty acceptable or not, as a deterrent.

However, what is definitely not acceptable in the context of Indian law, is
your proposal that, the murderers of Fr Eusebio should be publicly crucified
upside down, stoned in Margao and that their organs should be harvested.
Therefore, the points you raise now, about the death penalty per se, are
simply a distraction and not particularly relevant to the specific case
relating to Fr Eusebio and what you have expressly wished to see done.
Instead, I want to suggest that, you ought to first retract your emotional
outburst and advice, because currently, this has absolutely no purchase in
modern India. Then we can discuss the death penalty, in different forms, as
such, for as long as you want. Alternatively, you can, of course, pursue
your view through the parliamentary process in Delhi and see if anyone might
be persuaded by your views about crucifixion, stoning in a public place etc.
After all, India is a democracy and all points of view can be considered
through due process, even if someone wants to regress to medieval practices
which have largely been abolished in a progressive modern world with few
regressive exceptions such as those you have named.

In sum, we first need to focus on your original outburst and not be
side-tracked into other matters before we can resolve the issue of
crucifixion, stoning etc specifically initiated by you on Goanet.

Dear Jose, If you are as devout a Catholic as I am, you should accept the
Bible teachings and there are atleast two references to the death penalty:

 1. Numbers 35:31
If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death... .Moreover
you shall accept no ransom for the life of the murderer, who is guilty of
death; but he shall be put to death.

 2. Deuteronomy 19:21

[Goanet] RE:(Goanet) The Internet: A Teaching Tool For Konkani by P Rodrgues in Goanet Digest, Vol 3, Issue 156

2006-03-25 Thread Domnic Agnelo Fernandes
I am responding to a wonderful proposal by Mr P Rodrigues In the Goanet
Digest Vol.3 Issue 156 - The Internet: A Teaching Tool For Konkani.

Mr Rodrigues makes a proposal I would gladly make myself available as a
pupil.

I would be interested in the Roman Script as Devnagri is more than beyond
me.

Furthermore, it would suit me to log on at a time convenient to me to pick
up at a point in a lesson where I might have left it previously. I would
find it difficult to log in at a particular time or daily for that matter.
I am sure there may be others like me who would prefer this flexibility I
request.

Secondly would there any written text I could avail myself of and to which
all contributors, to the teaching of Konkani on the Internet, would conform
to in order to be consistent with a logical and programmed presentation of
grammar and vocabulary for the benefit of the Internet pupil?

It would be sad for this wonderful idea to lose support because pupils may
find it difficult to keep up with the pace or the presentation.

Then there is the question of the different dialects and there must be many
though my limited knowledge brings to mind the dialects for Salcete and
Bardez in Goa.

I would be very interested in knowing how the presentation would best be
progressed in due course.

Thank you Mr Rodrigues for coming up with this proposal and as a would be
pupil I would like to see it come to fruition.

PS. I enjoy reading the contribution from Mr Domnic Fernandes (in Konkani
and with translation) under the title 'AICHEA DISSAK CHINTOP'. I wonder if
Mr Fernandes would consider producing a compilation of all these wonderful
gems.

[Goanet] Re: Information required (US Visa for Portuguese Nationals)

2006-03-25 Thread JoeGoaUk

Portugal being member of EC, come under Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

We visited US (from UK) just before sept.11 and we needed no visa (But Visa was
stamped on Arrival).
Check the new rules below (FAQs).

Even now, Potuguese passport holders don't require Visa (as my friend said he
visited US few months ago) but may require to produce confirmed hotel
accomodation
at the immigration desk upon landing. Also, check the new requirement
(below)digital photo etc

Passport requirements for travelers under the Visa Waiver Program
Visa free travelers, including children, entering the United States under the
Visa
Waiver Program (VWP) require individual machine-readable passports (MRP). This
requirement has been in place since October 26, 2004.

From October 26, 2005 passports issued on or after that date must contain a
digital
photograph of the holder.

How do I know if I have a machine-readable passport?
Machine-readable passports allow data in the passport to be scanned
automatically by
a machine. There are two lines of letters, numbers and ’’s printed at the
bottom of
the personal information page, that is, the page with photograph and personal
details. (circled in red in the image of a U.S. machine-readable passport shown
below) If you are in any doubt as to whether or not your passport is
machine-readable, you should check with the passport issuing authority of your
country.
Follow this link for an example of a machine readable passport.

How do I know if my passport contains a digital photograph
The majority of VWP countries already issue passports with a digital photo
integrated into the data page. Visitors can tell whether their passport meets
these
requirements if it contains a digital photograph that is printed on the page,
not
glued or laminated into the document. Follow this link for an example of a
passport
with a digital photograph.

I understand that further changes are to take place in 2006
Passports issued on or after October 26, 2006, must also include an integrated
circuit chip capable of storing the biographic information from the data page, a
digitized photograph and other biometric information. Follow this link for an
example of a such a passport.

What do I do if I do not have a machine-readable passport or a passport which
contains a digital photograph?
If you do not have a machine-readable passport you will either be required to
apply
for a B-1 (business) or B-2 (tourist) visa, or if you wish to continue traveling
visa free under the VWP, obtain a new passport which is machine readable.

If you are a national of a country that does not issue passports with digital
photographs and your passport is issued on or after October 26, 2005 you will be
required to apply for either a B-1 (business) or B-2 (tourist) visa. If your
passport is issued before this date, the digital photograph requirement will NOT
apply to you.

Do I require a biometric passport to travel to the United States?
Passports issued on or after October 26, 2005, must include a biometric
identifier
based on applicable standards established by the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO). The Department of Homeland Security has announced that from
October 26, 2005, a digital photograph of the passport holder's face printed on
the
data page of the passport will be the acceptable standard. Passports issued on
or
after October 26, 2006, must also include an integrated circuit chip capable of
storing the biographic information from the data page, a digitized photograph
and
other biometric information.

What is an E-passport or Smart passport?
It is a biometric passport which is capable of storing the biographic
information
from the data page, a digitized photograph and other biometric information.
Passports issued on or after October 26, 2006 must meet this standard.

[Goanet] Re: Public execution

2006-03-25 Thread CARMO DCRUZ
Dear Jose,

If you are as devout Catholic as I am, you should accept the Bible teachings
and there are atleast two references to the death penalty:

1. Numbers 35:31
”If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death... .Moreover
you shall accept no ransom for the life of the murderer, who is guilty of
death; but he shall be put to death.”

2. Deuteronomy 19:21
“Your eye shall not pity; it shall be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for
tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”

You cannot claim to be a Catholic, a Christian and ignore these biblical
references in support of the death penalty and implicitly encourage the
Indian authorities to let Amit Shukla, Manish Dubey and cousin Brutal Britto
go scot free after committing heinous murders - with all due respect to your
Aao Portugues, Ami EEU podhi and patrade. and supercillious attitude
towards those Goans who really care and are concerned about the greater good
of our beloved Goa.

In the case of Amit Shukla, Manish Dubey and cousin Brutal Britto, there is
no modicum of doubt - they have even confessed that they committed the
horrible murders.

see references below to the deterrent impacts of the death penalty in Saudi
Arabia and China.

[Goanet] FR. EUSEBIO MOURNED IN KUWAIT.

2006-03-25 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

FR. EUSEBIO FERRAO MOURNED IN KUWAIT.

In a condolence meeting called by Kuwait Konknni Kendr, in Kuwait City on
Thursday 23rd of this month at 7.30 p.m., KKK paid homage to the late Goan
priest Fr. Eusebio Ferrao who was murdered in Goa at Magazana, on 17th of
this month by 2 youths from Uttar Pradesh. The condolence meeting was
addressed by the president Elvino Rodrigues, members Rosary Ferns, and Mario
Rebello and praised the good work of Fr. Ferrao in the cause of community
and society as a whole.

Regarding this murder, one has to learn a lesson and make a decision in
future to be very vigilant towards outsiders and to those who are strangers
to us. It is very risky even to hire services of servants coming from
outside Goa. Outsiders are having their own agenda. The first person in Goa
who was hanged at Aguada after Dec. 1961 was a non Goan known as Kumar but
his real name is Peter. He was sentenced for gallows because he killed the
lady and her children where he was working as domestic servant. He thought
he would escape from this crime by escaping from Goa after the multiple
murders and will enjoy the booty he got from that house. But he was caught,
tried and sent to the gallows. Like this, in smaller scale lot of nasty
happenings are taking place in our midst. To avoid this type of happenings,
one must be very careful before engaging himself/herself with an unknown,
unfamiliar person. Even in Kuwait, many of the families keep in their flats
bachelors to recover the rent without knowing the antecedents of these
bachelors from different regions in India and from different nationalities.
Many times these bachelors have their own agenda and in fulfillment of their
agenda they destroy the peace in the families where they are staying.
Because of such bachelors many of the wives left their husbands, eloped with
the bachelors and brought disgrace on their married life. This happens
because unknown and outsiders are dangerous people even though many amongst
them are good. But who will vouch for their goodness?

Under my nose very many of our girls without knowing the background of the
boys coming from different regions in India and from different nationalities
fall in love and go and settle with them in far off places from Goa and
India. Gradually these girls realize their faults of choosing a wrong person
who is either already married in his own region or country or the background
of the boys they marry is very bad. But what one can do at this late stage?
These mishaps occur only when one comes close to a strange person whose
background, history, language, tradition, religion and other aspects are
totally foreign. By keeping Hippies closer to our bodies and souls in Goa
we have destroyed our generation. The hippies are outsiders and they have
their own agenda of drugs, sex, and vulgarity. Hippies are the revolt
against human dignity and since hippies are outsiders in Goa they are least
bothered to protect our culture, tradition and way of life. Instead of
cautioning from the pulpit our community and society of the perils involved
in befriending outsiders our Padri Eusebio Ferrao fell prey to the outsiders
and lost his precious body which was helpful to the needy but I hope his
precious soul will not be lost to the cheering Lucifer because according to
the stories trickling in, smell of some foul play appears but the Church
leadership and Investigating authority must be bold enough to bare all facts
that led to this murder.

As a lover of Konkani, I am sad that we Konkani lovers lost a very good
Konkani promoter, Konkani writer and a very good preacher. I heard his
sermons and I loved to listen to his preachings. I read him regularly in
Konkani Magazines and V. Ixtt weekly. His last article appeared in Ixtt was
a masterpiece. Where we will get such an excellent Konkani writer? In his
death Konkani especially Roman script Konkani became little poor.

May the soul of Fr. Ferrao Rest in eternal peace.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

[Goanet] Cops crack case of missing call centre employee

Cops crack case of missing call centre employee
BY A STAFF REPORTER | Saturday, March 25, 2006 11:16:58 IST

Suspect Roweena has tied the knot with a colleague; hope to arrest
him from Goa.

The police seems to have zeroed in on the whereabouts of 21-year-old
Roweena Rodriques, an employee of Mumbai based call-centre who has been
missing since Friday last. According to the police, Roweena seems to
have married one of her colleagues Avinash, a resident of Vikhroli. The
issue came to light when Avinash called his parents and informed that
they were in Goa. We are sure that the girl is with him and they have
got married.

After reading reports in the newspapers, he called his residence from
Goa and said that he was keeping fine there. Now, we are doubting that
the girl has willingly gone out with him due to family pressure. Soon,
we will try to trace their whereabouts in Goa, says PSI Rade of the MHB
colony police station in Borivali. Meanwhile, sources in Zenta said
that the girl is still in touch with some of her best friends in the
office. One of the team leaders of Zenta, who did not wished to be named
said, She is said to be in touch with her very close friends. But she
has not revealed her whereabouts.

In the statement given to the police by Rodriques' office colleagues,
they said that Roweena was spotted with a mangalsutra around her neck, a
few days before she quit the job.Last week, the girl had reportedly
called her parents from a local PCO booth and informed them that she
would return home in the afternoon. However, when she did not turn up,
the worried father Martin Rodriques enquired with the office, only to
find that she had resigned from her services on March 7. Later, a
missing complaint was lodged with the MHB police station. Roweena's
father had earlier suspected Vijay, the driver of her company vehicle,
as she had complained about his misconduct, for which Vijay was fired by
Zenta's Transport officials.

As per transport rules for call centre staff, employees are instructed
to provide their family members the registration number and phone number
of the driver of the vehicle which ferries them to and fro office. This
is for use in case of an unforeseen eventuality. However, the last day
that Roweena left home, her father could not jot down the number of the
vehicle that she had boarded. Police investigations revealed that the
car belonged to Avinash. The police said that Avinash had picked her up
on two occasions.

Meanwhile, Shivaji Bodakhe, DCP of North Region said that Roweena's
friends have told the police that she eloped with her friend Avinash.
The man used to earlier work as driver of the BPO she worked in. We
have information that Avinash hails from Vikhroli and are hopeful he
will be in custody in the next two days.

[Goanet] Danish Cartoons

Radio Host Fired for Using Racial Epithet
By CHERYL WITTENAUER

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis radio station quickly fired a talk show host for
uttering a racial epithet as he talked about Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice on his morning show Wednesday.
Dave Lenihan apologized on the air immediately after making what he said was a
slip of the tongue. KTRS president and general manager Tim Dorsey agreed the
remark was accidental but said it was nonetheless ``unacceptable, reprehensible
and unforgivable.''

Lenihan had been heaping praise on Rice, who has frequently said she aspires to
run the NFL one day but has more recently ruled out seeking to replace retiring
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

``She's been chancellor of Stanford,'' Lenihan said on the air. ``She's got the
patent resume of somebody that has serious skill. She loves football. She's
African-American, which would kind of be a big coon. A big coon. Oh my God. I
am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that.''
He said he had meant to say ``coup'' instead of the racial slur.
KTRS listeners soon began calling the station to complain. Twenty minutes after
the utterance, Dorsey went on the air to apologize to Rice and KTRS listeners.
``There can be no excuse for what was said,'' Dorsey said. ``Dave Lenihan has
been let go. ... There is enough hate. We certainly are not going to fan those
flames.''
NAACP chapter president Harold Crumpton commended Dorsey for his swift action.
Reached at home, Lenihan said he was still trying to figure out what happened
and was drafting a letter of apology to Rice. He said he never uses the slur he
uttered and thinks Rice is ``a fantastic woman.''
Lenihan, formerly a drive-time host at WGNU radio in St. Louis, had been at
KTRS for less than two weeks.
``It was my dream job,'' he said. ``Ratings were going well. It kind of
stinks.''

Goa coast to host eighth Indo-French naval exercises from March 27

New Delhi: The eighth bilateral exercise of the generic series code
named 'Varuna' will take place off the western Indian coast March 27 to
April 7.=20
Informed Defence Ministry sources said that five Indian Navy surface
combatants, one submarine, and a number of different types of
shore-based fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft would be participating
in the exercise.=20

The participating Indian units will be under the tactical command of the
Flag Officer Commanding, Western Fleet, Rear Admiral Anup Singh. His
counterpart from the French Navy, will be Rear Admiral Xavier Magne.=20
The Indian Navy will be fielding the aircraft carrier Viraat along with
her air-group, the guided-missile destroyer Mumbai, the guided-missile
frigates Gomati and Betwa, the fleet-replenishment tanker Aditya, and,
the submarine Shankul.=20

The Indian Air Force will also participate in 'Varuna-2006' and will
field Jaguar And Canberra aircraft.=20

The French task force comprises their nuclear-propelled aircraft carrier
Charles de Gaulle (with her own air group), the guided-missile
destroyers Cassard and Montcalm, the fleet-replenishment tanker Somme,
the nuclear-powered submarine (SSN) Saphir, and, French 'Atlantique-II'
Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPAs) that will operate ex-Goa. In conformance
with modern practice, the French task force has one Royal Navy frigate,
HMS Lancaster, embedded within it.=20

One of the major thrust-areas would be 'DACT' (Dissimilar Air Combat)
between the Indian Navy's Sea Harrier aircraft ex-Viraat, and, the
Rafale and Super Etendards of the Charles de Gaulle.=20

Other aspects that would be exercised by the two navies include fleet
air-defence, intermediate and advanced ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare), MIO
(Maritime Interdiction Operations), VBSS (Visit, Board, Search and
Seizure) procedures and tactical manoeuvres.=20

Some of the 'firsts' of this exercise include the co-ordinated operation
of the Indian and French aircraft carriers (Viraat and Charles de
Gaulle), firing on aerial targets, cross-deck operations by the Indian
Navy's Sea Harrier aircraft from the deck of the Charles de Gaulle, and,
participation by the Indian Air Force.=20

The 'Varuna' series of joint exercises between the Indian and the French
navies commenced in 2001 and has grown in scope and complexity over the
years. These exercises have been hugely successful in facilitating
mutual learning and interoperability between the two navies. The last
such exercise was held in November 2005 off Djibouti (in the Gulf Of
Aden).

Bottled ocean water, anyone?
BY INDIRA RODERICKS | Friday, March 24, 2006 10:51:12 IST

Don't miss Subodh Kerkar's paintings, sculptures and installations=20
exhibited at the Jehangir Art Gallery.

Until 18 years ago, Goa-based artist and sculptor Subodh Kerkar was a
qualified medical practitioner who occasionally dabbled in art. After a
few successful exhibitions he chucked his medical practice and opted to
become a full-time artist instead. That was in the beginning, it was
only later when he diversified into sculpture and installation art.

After five years he returns to Mumbai with an exhibition (at the
Jehangir Art Gallery) he calls 'The Oceanic' - each work on display is
associated with the marvels of what else, but the ocean. It has taken
me two years to put together this exhibition, while at the same time I
continue with my installation work at my studio at Calangute. Here most
of the installations are on the beach itself, just like poetry written
on the sands, he said. =20

People might remember Kerkar's work two years ago when he had displayed
his art at Priyadarshini Park during the Mumbai festival. But this
time, the exhibits have surpassed his previous work and range from
acrylic on canvas paintings to displays in wood, metal and terracotta,
plus the hard-to-miss boats, sails (in glass) and sea shells. Perhaps
the most amazing display is what he has titled 'bottled ocean water',
all labelled and sealed - one hundred per cent pure with a 7 per cent
salt content, he says. Can't get more realistic than that!=20

I started painting realistic art, which I learnt from my father. Later
I moved to images of the sea. Having lived in Goa all my life, painting
the sea comes naturally to me. It has been my constant companion over
the years and quite frankly I cannot imagine doing anything else, added
Kerkar.=20
Comparing the two mediums, Kerkar continued that he is partial to
installation art. That is because, he says, here you never know what
the end result will be. In a painting you would have already envisioned
the final product. The work that is on display is priced between Rs.
45,000 and Rs. 2 lakh.

Returning home, he begins work on an Art Park in Panjim that has been
commissioned by the Government of Goa and developing a two km walk
through a forest dotted with sculptures by Kerkar. But what he is
really looking forward to is an installation at the Wagah Border which
he is hoping to begin work on soon. Half of it will be on the Indian
side the other in Pakistan. Of course a lot of work needs to be done
from the required permissions to the basic groundwork. But this is
something I am really looking forward to... he said.

Coming to the re-organizational set-up of the NRI/Global Goans, I do not see
any such role for me to play. It is,afterall a self-looking after sort of
organization which can be organized and floated very easily. But as Miguel
Brazanza has said, the joint initiative is a must. What better than the
already established GOAN NRI ASSOCIATION which already has a web-site in
www.goa500.com? . I have personally taken interest in this website and I can
see it emerging slowly but steadily, though it could be better managed. And
I feel that the existing representative of the NRIs whom they have appointed
themselves should be given a chance to prove himself within his mandated
time period of one year. For a change his efforts must be appreciated with a
small pat on the back.

As for me, I am heading a much much bigger organization which has the task
of reforming the political scene of Goa. And believe you me that it is a
daunting task of changing the mind-set of the people of Goa who have
generally lost faith in politics which affects their everyday lives and
leave it to the hyenas to run away with everything they have. What is
required here is much much more commitment than just self-help commitment. I
am sure you understand this.

However, I shall always remain a watch-dog as far as NRI/NRG movement is
concerned to see the direction it is taking. We want it moving in the
direction of breeching the wide gap between Goan NRIs that is existing and
coming closer to a mythical UNITY. Afterall, Goan NRIs and NRGs is a very
important component in the scheme of things designed by GOASURAJ for GOA.

I fully appreciate your thinking but I must say Thank you, but NO.

With kind regards

As you have realized, Vivian is an experienced and

have your heads on your shoulders, and since the old

don't you two put your heads and shoulders together

[Goanet] Heinous crimes not unknown to Goa

2006-03-25 Thread Bernado Colaco

=

What have Goans learnt from this heinous act? Today
Pe. Ferrao was killed. How many more Goans are going
to suffer this similar fate at the hands of those from
the new regime?

[Goanet] What's happening to Goanet?

Enough of this nonsense. The past few months have seen Goanet discussions
degenerate into mindless nonsense, name calling and foul language. I'm
missing the old Goanet and I don't want to read posts like this that make no

As a result of this, for the last few months I've just been reading new

Hi Derek,

In some of the states in the US like Florida, we are fortunate to have the
death penalty which serves as a strong deterrent.

It appears that Mario Goveia and others are more for criminal's rights that

victim's rights - all in the name of justice.

In Goa we need to make an example of fast track justice and exemplary
punishment for Amit and Manish who have already confessed to murdering Fr.
Ferrao, to serve as a strong deterrent to Goans and esp the Bhailles.
Besides Cruxifiction on the cross on Good Friday will have special meaning
for a number of Goans and will send a strong message to the rest of India.

A Fast track trial and death sentence will also be more humane to Amit,
Manish and their families, rather than a long drawn out court battle when
the odds are against them.

If they implement fair and fast track justice system in the US, most of the
trial lawyers will go bankrupt. Thats the problem here - May be the US and
the rest of the world will learn a lesson if Goa blazes the trail and
sentences Amit Shukhla and Manish Dubey to death via a fasttrack legal
process by public stoning, crucifiction and harvesting of their organs for
transplants.

Carmo

[Goanet] Politics of Destruction (V M de Malar)

2006-03-25 Thread Goanet News Service
Politics of Destruction

By V. M. de Malar
vmingoa at gmail.com

In the wake of the carefully planned pogrom in Sanvordem, many concerned
citizens declared that the best way forward is to survey all religious
structures and promptly destroy every illegality. It's a well-meaning
prescription from unquestionably decent souls. But it is still wrong; this
proposed solution is rather worse than the problem, it's shortsighted and
takes no lessons from our long history. Implementing this proposal would be an
exercise in futility, a revisiting of Goa's terrible dark ages. We need to
take a few collective deep breaths and consider what can be accomplished by
unleashing a pointless frenzy of demolitions on our traditionally tolerant and
accepting society.

First, let's not get distracted by religion in talking about that vicious
little bout of ethnic cleansing. It plays into the hands of the architects of
that disgrace; in fact it was quite simply a calculated attempt to intimidate
civil society. It's still too early to tell whether the gambit has worked, but
there's no doubt that it hasn't entirely backfired because even implacable
anti-communalists got trapped into debating the legality of various religious
structures rather than unanimously condemning plain and simple mob violence.
The stone-throwers and arsonists in the mob did not act from religious
impulse, they targeted Muslims not because of faith but because they
determined (largely correctly) that Muslims were an easy target.

But since we are talking religion, let's be clear that we enter very dangerous
territory when we talk about taking bulldozers to churches and temples and
mosques. It goes against public sentiment; Goans of all communities are
traditionally tolerant towards the practices and institutions of all
religions. We are an exceptionally spiritual people. Goan practices are
uniquely syncretic and beautifully open-minded; look at the Sontreo Utsav
earlier this week where Hindus and Catholics alike paid tribute to Shri
Shantadurga Devi.

People tend to think of theocratic states like Saudi Arabia and Iran as the
most religious, but they're mistaken. It's India where religion really burns
in the soul of all people rather than being imposed from above, and our Goa
takes a back seat to no other place in the world for honest, deeply moving,
expression of true faith. It is a great strength that has faced down invasion
and Inquisition; we need to treat it with greater respect, not shabby and
misguided condescension.

Besides, haven't we had enough orgies of destruction? Our jewel-like Goa has
been besieged by succeeding waves of invaders throughout history; each
newcomer indiscriminately smashed the predecessor's houses of worship. The
last horrific wave, at the hands of Portuguese fanatics, has left real,
undeniable, scars; it would be really unwise to re-open those old wounds.

Is the lovely Piedade church that sits proudly atop my own Divar Island
incontestably legal, for example? It sits right on the ruins of one of the
most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Here's what Andre Corsalli
wrote to his Medici boss in 1516, The Portuguese, in order to build the city,
have destroyed an ancient temple which was built with marvellous art and with
ancient figures wrought to the greatest perfection…ruined and shattered,
because these Portuguese care nothing about them. It was just one of hundreds
of similar tragedies at the hands of those ignorant European barbarians.
Aren't we wiser than them, almost five hundred years later?

The sad truth is that we are being dangerously distracted, and ignore the
really criminal illegalities right under our noses. Just this week, our
inscrutable Tourism Minister announced that he has a list of 314 blatant
violations of CRZ laws that protect our precious coastline, that these have
been noted for appropriate action. Well, anyone who goes regularly to the
steadily spreading tourist strips knows that there are probably 50 times that
many outrageous violations, and the only official action taken is entirely
inappropriate; bribery, extortion and more illegal conversion and
construction. Why are sincere Goans losing their cool about each other's
houses of worship, and not militating against this massive-scale,
incontrovertibly illegal, destruction of our priceless environmental legacy?

Bring on the bulldozers, by all means. But take them straight to Baga, Morjim,
Cavelossim and then into the cities. Pry that list from Dr. Willie's clutches.
It will be a good beginning. (ENDS)

[Goanet] Domnic Fernandes' articles and upcoming book

2006-03-25 Thread Cecil Pinto
Domnic has been entertaining and informing us in Goan Cyberspace for years
now with his fantastic articles about the Goa of old. His encyclopaedic
memory and narrative style is awesome. Over the years hundreds of people
have been asking Domnic to compile all his articles into a book. Domnic and
myself have had discussions on the feasibility of publishing such a book
and have decided to go ahead. The exact content and format of the book,
price, distribution, marketing etc etc has to be fine tuned - but the book
is definitely on.

Why I write this is because in recent weeks there have been requests from
many quarters to host all of Domnic's superb writings on one
website/webpage. Now this, we feel, would not be conducive for the sale of
the book when it finally comes out. Very few people would actually purchase
a printed book when they can read all the articles at one place online for
free.

Another bothersome development is that many websites and printed
publications are hosting/printing Domnic's articles without even asking his
permission - leave alone proffering any payment. This is blatantly
unethical -besides being illegal.

I can understand someone appreciating an article of Domnic's and forwarding
it to his friends, saying You must read this! Great stuff, but to host or
print it, specially on a commercial website/publication is unfair.

Understand that Domnic has no commercial motivation in publishing a
compilation of his writings, but would like to have a book to his name, to
archive and spread all his writings. But with the way the publishing trade
operates, and the slender margins after distribution costs, it is often
very difficult to even break even. Specially when your potential audience
is only Goans.

Therefore my request to all you fans of Domnic's writings is to hold on to
your horses and your purse strings. The book will be published as soon as
we can work out the finer details and have a comprehensive enough
collection of articles. Till then please do not attempt to make any online
compilation. Any website wanting to upload (or publication wishing to
print) an article of Domnic's is legally bound to ask Domnic's permission
first.

Let's do things the correct way. The Goan way!

And just a teaser, stay tuned for Domnic's latest article A Reminiscent
Tour of Mapusa Town in the 1950's. This is a Three Part series, in
Domnic's inimitable meandering style, that is perhaps one of the best
articles Domnic has ever written. I was lucky to have a preview of Part 1
just yesterday and am panting for more.

Cheers!

[Goanet] CHAOS IN BANGALORE TOMORROW; IN GOA, DAY AFTER

2006-03-25 Thread Philip Thomas
http://www.businessworldindia.com/MAR2706/indepth03.asp

Three to Tango

No one transport system is enough to fix Bangalore's crumbling
infrastructure. The city needs three

Nelson Vinod Moses

There is an ambitious plan to fix Bangalore's crumbling transport
infrastructure. Ambitious, because it involves creating two new transport
systems - a conventional metro rail project and an unconventional monorail
project - and then meshing both into an existing network of 4,000 buses that
run on 4,600 km roads.

Bangalore is willing to risk such an audacious plan because it is
desperate. Its roads are already gasping - the city has the highest number
of vehicles per lakh of population. About 900 vehicles are added every day
to the city's 26.8 lakh vehicular population. As these fight for space on
the arterial roads, average driving speed has already dropped from an
estimated 20 kmph in 1990 to between 12-16 kmph at present. Bangalore's
reputation as a world-class tech cluster is getting jaded because of its
poor infrastructure (see 'Holding On').

There are indications that the monorail will be designed to support the
Metro. But there seems to be no coordination between the Metro and the
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses, which currently
services more than half of the city's transportation needs. But BMTC, rather
than complement the proposed Metro, is seeking to compete with it. BMTC is
talking about its own transport system; it is talking about a grid system.
We are not aligned like New York to have a grid system, claims Ramanathan.
Bangalore's streets are circuitous and winding when compared to the more
simpler grid formation of New York streets.

In the future, Bangalore will have to live with a network of three main
transport systems - metro, monorail and BMTC buses. If many transport
systems have to co-exist with the Metro and complement it, four main issues
have to be tackled: comprehensive connectivity, integration of various
transport systems, affordability, and marrying urban development with
transportation, says Ramanathan.

But all that is still many, many years away. First, given the state of
Bangalore's new flyovers, the government's ability to finish the project on
time is suspect. The city is going to get a whole lot worse once the digging
and construction begins. We are in for chaos as the Metro is going into the
heart of Bangalore. I have no faith in the (project's declared) timelines,
says Ramanathan.

Priest Murder Case: Day 9,
What today's papers reported (25/03/06)

Thanks for feedback/support received (not from many though)

OK, Let's see what today's Goan dailies reported (25.3.06).

NAVHIND TIMES:
Nothing, yes nothing reported at all.

Didn't I say whole thing is slowly dying..??

HERALD: Page 3
KNIFE USED IN PRIEST'S MURDER SENT FOR TESTS.
...sent for forensic tests to Hyderabad.

A Police team is also leaving for Nagpur to recover the clothes worn by the duo
at
the time of committing the heinous offence.

...Supdt. of police South Sheker Prabhudesai said the police interrogation of
the
two accused is in progress. He replied in the affirmative when asked whether the
accused had changed their clothes after reaching Nagpur. ...also admitted that
the
knife used in stabbing the priest was a 'butter' knife, adding that only the
handle
of the knife was broken and not the knife.
Asked whether the priest had brought the knife from the kitchen for self
defence, he
said 'the knife was on the table in the room of the priest and not the kitchen'
He (Prabudesai) reiterated that the scuffle between the priest and the two
accused
ensued over some argument vis-a-vis the promise of a job for Manish.

GOMANTAK TIMES: Front page
MURDER OF THE PRIEST NOT PRE-PLANNED: POLICE
Police deny that the murder of the priest was pre-panned

The weapon sent to the forensic lab...

Speaking to the journalist in the city (Margao), SP (South) Shekar Prabusedai
said
they were awaiting verification report of criminal antecedents of the duo.

The police also said that though the priest entertained many visitors they never
spent nights at the priest's residence.

The scuffle with the priest arose over a job promise by the priest. The knife
used
was a butter knife that was lying on a table near the priest's bed in his room.

Since Manish had to answer his exams, he may have sought leave the same day he
added (SP).

While DIG Ujwal Mishra disclosed that the duo walked a considerable distance
before
they hitched a lift to the city..the two got a lift from a truck to Margao
railways
station where they boarded MAngala Express train and got off at Bhusawal before
heading to Nagpur..

The DIG Mishra also denied any sexual assault on the priest.

That's it for today.
